I Bought a Squareback (1971 VW Type-3 1600 Variant)

- After many opportunities on other cars falling flat, I managed to find one car that we managed to close a deal on. I've been looking for an appropriate car for customization, and this 1971 Volkswagen Type-3 Squareback Variant I felt is exactly the candidate. It needs about everything and has a ton of rust.... but it's nothing that The Duckman can't fix!

Anything special you want to see on this car before I get to work? Lots of BIG things coming! I can't wait to dig into this car!
I'm just in it for the ride, Glenn. I have no ideas what to do to the car except LS swap the engine. 😂🤣😅🤣😂
I’m always trying to figure what to do first and how to prioritize and order the long list of tasks. I tend to put off things like rust repair and floor pans etc but I’m eager to see what you film and release!
@@BecksTKD That's more rust than I want to tackle. Sand blasting the frame....there might be nothing left! 😂🤣😅🤣😂
I have a soft spot for Type 3's we had one as a family car when I was a kid. Same colour, same year. Can't wait for this one!
Thanks man! Update today, and another big update hopefully tomorrow!
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I knew it was going to be chopped can’t wait to see the progress
Choppy choppy choppy! 😁😁😁👍🦆💩
It's a nice car and looking forward to seeing the 1971 VW Squareback racing down the road again.
Thank you! Hopefully we'll get the brakes sorted out this week!
Yee-haw...A new acquisition! Can't wait for the new episodes!
Lots to come, big update should come out tomorrow!
I'd buy that just for the seat covers!
She needs a little Duckman magic, good luck! 👍
Those Kitty seat covers LOL
Man, this is going to be a great build.. I am stoked!
Thanks man! Good things are coming..... like a hottub? Hehehe! WEEEE!
That is doable and cool. That could make a little El Camino too. It will be an adventure.
Thanks man, I think we're on the same page here. 😁👍🦆💩
I can’t wait to see the square back videos . I have the same 71 efi now carb
Thanks man! Update today, possibly another tomorrow!
The skeleton sticker on the window makes the car worth it 😄
The grateful dead! 😁👍🏻🦆💩
Looki forward to see it all the way till the end.. im sure is gonna b great!!
Thanks man! New video today, and hopefully another one tomorrow!
That's so cool can't wait see what you come up with! Im actually surprised to see you came across something in a little better shape then your usual!
LoL is it, though? Not really..... Haha!
It has been so long since I have seen a square back, I had forgotten they existed. I now remember them as a kid in the 70's. I think that would be cool as hell on the bus frame project. Well done.
Yeah, we don't see them very often! Special find indeed! GOIN' UP! ⬆
Nice find Glen! It's not that bad, nothing you can't handle. And think of all the future videos! Can't wait to see it run! Onwards and upwards...
Update today, and hopefully a BIGGER update tomorrow! 😁👍🦆💩
Super pumped. I just got a 72 square, so I’ll be watching. I love this
Thanks man, hope you subscribe. It’ll be more of this, this week I’ll probably get the valves adjusted and try to take it for a test ride.
Looking good Duckman , I think you’ll make something good out of this, looking foreward to it!!
Thanks, Paul! More fun is coming!
First I watched because of woman but now I watch for Duckman!!!!!! Love his spirt and attitude. So much information!!! Keep it up Duckman
Haha, everyone needs a gimmick! I try to explain that to new UA-camrs. My gimmick has her own personality and intelligence, though. Glad to have her when she comes around. You might have never found me without the lure! Am I right? Thanks for sticking around!
Nice!!!! This project is going to rock! Looking forward to it😁
Thanks so much!
Perfect candidate
Yes sir, I think so! 😁👍🦆💩😮
Congrats Duckman!
Thank you thank you!
I love it!!! Nice score Glenn, I can't wait to see what comes. Veedubs forever!
Much appreciated, more fun to come!
Awesome, just started watching the vid…..glad you found the squareback. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one that suggested the SB, but I also suggested converting the rear hatch to a Barn Door style….Good Luck m’Lord Duckman!!!
U another and I make three so far for the SB lol
Thanks man, let's see what happens! 😁👍🦆💩
Love those cars I wish there where more notch backs in the states, I really like those.
Yeah, notches are a pretty rare find stateside. Maybe there will be one in my future. I guess we'll see! Thanks man!
If you chop the back off and turn it into a open bed pickup, it will save you a ton of rust repairs, especially around those windows. Chop it, chop it, chop it!!!
Can’t give any spoilers.... muahahaha
Lifted squareback ?!?!! You have my attention 😆
It's coming! hehehe!
Will be interesting to see what your vision will manifest
Thanks man, lots more to come on this one!
Sweet! Always happy to see more Type-3 content!
More to come! Update today, and another tomorrow! Thanks man!
Definitely going o be different, but cool. Looking forward to seeing the progress
That's the plan... DIFFERENT! Thanks man!
I am sure I was one of thousands, but I'm glad to see you went with my (our) square back suggestion. As a larger-statured guy (6'3 ish, around 270), these are a much better fit for me. Plus if you keep the fuel-injected suitcase, more power is easily available. I'm excited to see how you bring this to a runner/driver! Thank you.
Good call my friend, our dimensions are very similar....and I fit in my Fastback quite well! This is going to be an interesting build!
Good choice, Glenn! VW Squareback? Don't break your back fast building the raised vehical.
Good job on the name correction there LOL! Yep it's a Squareback, I probably won't break my back building it.... I'll use some clever lifting mech instead! 😁😁😁😁😁👍🦆💩
Nice it will look great lifted.
Thanks man! GOIN' UP! ⬆
Oh a square back , never would’ve guessed that lol 😂
Hehehehee
Duckman I'm glad to see a squareback project. I have a 73 squareback in Clementine Orange that I named Clementine of course. But I'm making a death rocket. I'm putting my body on a ford crown vic chassis. Then once that's situated I'm throwing a turbo charged 460 big block ford up front with all the power and just pray I don't tear the dang thing apart. Excited to see the chassis swap.
That's a big chassis, gonna take a lot of fittin'! Good luck to you! Hope you're making videos, i gotta see this!
Will definitely make videos. In the process of a Cummins swap on my daily driver. Then doing a 1970 vw beetle with a 2009 wrx powerplant and transmission. So definitely big plans but I'm doing it out of a small one car garage. Hoping to put a 3 car garage in the back for filming. Definitely will have videos on all the wrenching and struggles. Thank you for inspiring my love for vw bodies even if I like new motors.
Thanks thanks man, I'm really hoping to see this one! Made any progress yet?
Glenn, My 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner was a similar colour: paint Code Y2 called Sun Fire Yellow... !! 😉
That's interesting, I'm not sure if this yellow is an original color or not. I'll have to look it up, but I do think that this yellow may not have been the original color of this car. A few things hinted that around the entire compartment.
@@DuckmanCycles If you go with Yellow again, I highly suggest VW/Audi "Ginster Yellow". My Audi Coupe Quattro was that color and it looks awesome.
Lemonade! I love it. Gonna be SE-WEET. Make it look good.
So far has been quite sour LOL
Glenn, call your new ride "Bumble". Short for Bumble Bee Yellow.
Bee would sue me.... 🤣🤣🤣👍🦆💩
That’s very cool.
Thank you!
Awesome.
nice job.
Thank you! Not sure what job I accomplished though LOL! That will be in the next video! 😁😁😁👍🦆💩
awesome! I am so happy it ended up being a type 3 and a squareback none the less! Gotta be honest that I am glad the one you got will need a lot of work... means more content for us 😀I am filming my own squareback content at the moment to launch my channel somewhere in/after the summer.
THAT IS AWESOME! Let me know, I'll be watching! Thanks man!
Here in Australia the cop's only have to think you were on the Phone or glancing at the Phone, drinking or eating $400 to $700 on the spot fine, you have to prove in a Court of law that you weren't, which cost's you anyway, if you prove that you didn't commit the offence, 😅 the Square back looks like what you need, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Yikes! Some states here are real jerky about that stuff, Florida is pretty lazy about it.
Commenting before watching but a lifted square back would be badass and different.ive saw some beetles lifted but never a square back
Your wish is my command!
I think you got Lemmon run
Fuel line can be clued old gas
👍
From Sweden
Old gas was sure stinky, it smelled like bad cinnamon!
I need a welder so I can start building different shit. Put that on my bucket list
I got one for you, my brother said he would sell it!
I love square backs 👍
I like this one, more fun coming! 😁👍🦆💩
Back in the seventies my brother had one of those in mint condition. Florida rain dont like volkswagons. Salt air too.
Salt air not really a problem here unless you're right on the water. I know people that live on the beach but keep their Volkswagens here in town in storage. The big problem with Volkswagens are very well sealed, and everything has a rubber goggie to keep it that way. They go bad and are meant to be replaced, but when one leaks, the water gets in... and man, they hold water quite well... until they don't anymore... haha!
@@DuckmanCycles So they did not replace the rubber seals and it leaked then it rusted?
Yayyyy this is so cool 🤘🏽🔥😊❤️
Thank you! New video soon!
Lifted wagon FTW
GOIN' UP! ⬆
Your engine deck area looks a lot like mine in my ‘71 SQBK. I’d love to see how you cut out the old rusty metal and how you put in a new deck area.
That's because this is a 1971 Squareback! 😁👍🏻🦆💩 definitely a lot of rust in there though I guess we'll see what happens! Thanks for the comment!
If im thinking right and maybe your going to put it on the other bare frame maybe you can then call her HIGH FLYER. 😊😊😊
Hehehehehe! Not a bad suggestion! Thanks man! Updates today and tomorrow!
Slam it. Awesome!
Going up!
Squareback my fave VW
Awesome, well I'm so glad I was able to share this one with you!
love it
Thanks much!
You are so funny. Even if it was in perfect condition, you would find some reason to change it to what you wanted. Everyone knows this,Even you. 😎
Hah... actually I don't mess with vintage pristine things... not in the cutting it apart way, anyway. That is a rule over here.
The type 3 VW equivalent of a lifted Ranchero would be interesting
Reading my mind!
Lemmy! 😁
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemmy
If anyone can the DUCKMAN can. The Neighbour's looking through the curtain windows MAUUUUUDDDD hes got another bloody car again well that is just peachy isnt it.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 They actually come over to talk to me about them. LoL! And when I start something up or move something around, people all start coming outside to watch. The traffic driving by even slows down.
Can you use the older style hood? They are 100 times better looking than the "new and improved" late model one.
I wish. but I'd have to chop the front clip off, and find 2 earlier fenders, too. It's possible, but we'll see! Thanks man!
Rad that has the better irs transaxle I believe geared for the hwy
Yeah, geared a big higher! Ruby has the earlier one. But I actually prefer the earlier one. We'll see what happens here! Thanks man!
One if the reasons type 3s are so great is because you just adjust the tension bars to lift or lower your ride.. no need to frame swap it??
It is a lot of adjustability, but unlike like a beetle you can adjust the front without modifying the beam. But if you still want to MEGA-RAISE it, it would need something swapped.
Le-Moan lol the cars possible name lol
French? What are you moaning about?
Just finished my 71 SB...! Nice if i could post a pic...?
Of course you can! 😁👍🏻🦆💩
The type 3 FI setups are better than, the FI systems on the later type 1.
I know very little about either.... but you'll see in the next video I managed to diagnose it. Thankfully I had spares that were taken off of Ruby from previous owner. 😁👍🦆💩
Like the Beatles song mellow yellow.
That was by Donovan
I had a chop top '71.
Awesome! I saw one like that at a show a few years back, its in one of my past videos. It was pretty neat.
@@DuckmanCycles yup. I love to chop tops..lol I have actually built a few off road monster V-Dubs.
Lemongello!
Sounds Italian! 😁👍🦆💩
Don't they call those "Kamm back" or am I thinking of something else? 🤔
You're thinking of something else. 😁 a kammback typically has a teardrop or fastback shape, although could be a wedge... with a snubbed chopped off looking rear end. Flat asses... lol. A Mustang fastback, DeTomaso Pantera, and even an AMC Gremlin are better examples. Even a Prius would fit into this category.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
😁👍🦆💩
I'll be honest I'm in the UK and the type 3 is warming to me quite a bit and I've been looking to buy one when it comes to parts I'm beginning to find that parts are scarce what are parts availability like in the USA ie... repair panels front beams floor pans etc as the UK vehicles do suffer with the dreaded metal worm your help would be much appreciated
Well, parts are a bit harder to find, but body metal is available, and I believe there is an outfit that makes it right there in the UK. I haven't seen anyone doing Type-3 beams, but they don't usually break. Rust is another issue, but you can always scab another beam off another car. Door handles and generators have been a hard find around here, but I've always found what I've needed, or I made the parts from something else that was readily available.... like the EXPENSIVE-AND-HARD-TO-GET one-year-only transmission nosecone mount on my 1968. But I drive it everyday, parts are available if you look! Hope that helps!
ive never understood HOA's over there i get what they try to do but to me its illogical. like i saw a video a while back a guy bought a truck and the HOA went nuts at him for it. complete madness lol.
nice square back i have never seen one like that before kind of reminds me of the old lada estate car at the back only though.
a lot of work ahead of you there.
i think you should call the car yellow mellow.....quite rightly.....hahaha
the question though is this going on the bus frame? unless i missed it i didnt hear you mention the bus frame
The HOAs are all about the property worth.... people that value money more than living. I won't be found living in one, thats for sure!
@@DuckmanCycles don't blame you if rather live where I can do whatever on my property within reason of course
@@TotoGuy-Original Within reason... of the local law. I try not to be a nuisance, I shut down after dark, and don't start early in the morning. I also don't make all kinds of noise every day. I'm the quiet one here!
@@DuckmanCycles same here even if others are not doing the same like the neighbours lol
Hello
I like the roof rack....do you know who sells it?
Thank you in advance
Thanks! Thank roof rack was actually a dealer installed option back in the 70s. I don't think you can find one anymore, but I might sell this one.
where's B_McQueen? we wanna see more of her, well maybe as much as you tube will allow!
Off topic post hijack. She's not in this video. Look on my other channel for the latest video with she.
Old yeller yellow
Haha, in "take it out back and shoot it" condition!
MAN THAT THING NEEDS DIPED ,,BUT A COOL CAR
I have no idea what a dipe is, but thank you for yelling it at me lol! 🤣🤣🤣👍🏻🦆💩
Lord Glenn, nice car. I'm curious as to how much you paid for it. If it's none of my business that's OK, thanks
Discussing my financials in an open forum really isn’t appropriate. You never know who’s watching.
@@DuckmanCycles no problem I was just curious about the ballpark price on something like that. I'll try to drop you an email so we can talk in private. I enjoy you and your channel.
Lemon hornet
The sour stinger! LoL! Thanks!
Is a fuel injection on the Volkswagen hard to work on
If you know what you're doing, I'd say no. They aren't very complicated. But most people don't have the knowledge. I don't know these things either, but I am a problem-solver. I'll find my way through it all!
Can't wait to hear all about it
Thanks man, video already went up on this thing. I might even get my first test drive out of it today but you’ll see in video later this week! 😁👍🦆💩
Body for the bus frame??
I did say it in the video, hehe.....
@@DuckmanCycles where's the "tongue-in-cheek" emoji when you need it,.... LOL
call it creampuff lol
LoL! The sarcasm in that name.... this car is anything but! Haha! Thanks man!
Lemon sherbet
LOL someone else suggested that. It might stick! Thanks man!
Also good luck with your project I know it will turn out to be another head turner
Thanks man! more fun to come with this one! She's gonna be a biggun!
Make things even weirder and make a 412 camino and that sir duck man will control the universe
LoL send one over! I rarely see any
Duckman have you seen the video of the twin engine (VW)square back gasser on youtube ?
I sure have.. it's been around a long time before it ever even hit UA-cam, I probably wouldn't build anything like that but it's a really interesting creation!
