This is fascinating stuff to me as a young 17 year old, David. Thank you for giving me some insight into life back then, I'm now addicted to these clips films discussing the 60s 😂
I was born in Texas on December 13th 1958. I was a change of life baby. My daddy fought in WWII, so did 2 of his brothers. Two of my mama's brothers fought in WWII. They had a great love for FDR. Big time Democrats. We were raised in the Assembly Of God Pentecostal church. Very conservative. We were raised with a very strong belief in separation of church & state. It was always amazing to me that people didn't understand the innate importance of that.
I didn't realize how much this was hitting me until I felt the tears on my face. My grandfather, a religious Catholic, the man who raised me, once told me that I was breaking his heart. It's a painful thing to realize that cherished values are also contradictory, and that the price of family is cognitive dissonance while the price of integrity is permanent, emotional disconnect.
@@NoahBodze I wasn't saying there is integrity in being naive about the world. I was referring to the relationship between integrity and deceiving oneself into maintaining a worldview that they know to be highly unlikely; or in my case, deceiving certain family members into believing I subscribed to their naive worldview. To be honest was to disappoint my grandfather, while to appease him would've meant lying to him. In all honesty, I would've feigned belief if he was like most grandfathers (Why worry him or risk triggering his own existential crisis at his age?), but he was more like an ever-present father growing up, so there was more involved in pretending to believe things I don't that I won't go into here. I'm not the type to debate people about beliefs because, frankly, I don't give two fucks what you believe. I'm not a proselytizing, Dawkins-esque atheist because I think it's a little silly to base part of my personality around something I lack and nowadays think of only rarely.
@@NoahBodze There was not a slight of "moral indignation" in my comment. I was only commenting on your lack of civility, which is rather ironic assuming (!) you are trying to prove the commentators childishness about his atheism! (Feel free to correct me on that one) Furthermore, I apologize for not indulging your argumentative level of insulting people on the internet. Perhaps I should also google some pseudo-intellectual quote about people using insults as arguments.... That will definitely prove my intellectual and moral superiority to you, I guess...
An excellent interview Very poignant with what is going on today His life changed dramatically and drastically It was an interesting time where minds were being enlightened And with that change in mindset you experienced a lot of new joys - but also a lot of new pains - especially in relationships within the different generations You can see the inner turmoil he had with his family as these changes were happening Not an easy road to go down for many during this tine An excellent interview David
Who remembers "liberal" Republicans? Those Skull& Bones guys at NATIONAL REVIEW took them out. About half of the Right held their noses and voted to resurrect Nixon. If they'd known they were really getting Ford/Rockefeller, Nixon wouldn't have made it. That's when Reagan's guys decided they'd had enough. Dutch got hosed on the '76 nomination, and had to take a S&B wimp for VP in '80. Perot (& Ed Rollins) fixed him in '92. Curiously , Ford's CIA Director (also Nixon's China envoy) was the one they tried to use to stop Reagan. Then Reagan took a bullet.
I live in Iowa, and for some reason I look around and it’s like I can’t imagine what this place is like years ago, I need to hear from these things, because the people around me don’t know a thing about anything, I don’t understand what it was like or what happened to the way people were, btw I’m still just a freshmen in high school and everything here in Iowa just seems like it’s the plain Jane simple normal but then there’s people who are trying to stick out and those who want no part of it, I don’t really want to stick out but as I learn more about the 20th century I almost feel educated, and then I come upon this time that everyone can’t get past and I feel like I know nothing over again
In Europe we know that post-modernism is nonsense, but we like nonsense otherwise what to do at the cafes? We theorize on issues just for the heck of it, the same way an American experiments with machines even if it makes no sense. But Americans took the European post-modernism seriously, the same way that Europeans took rock and roll seriously.

Funny that as an Iowan on the west end, Council Bluffs doesn't seem so small these days. It is still staunchly conservative, however.
