The U.S. involvement in Vietnam was a huge mistake. So many on both sides were slaughtered & maimed, & in the end, little else had been accomplished. It was easy to see the U.S. should get out of it. It was definitely a conflict worthy of being protested against.
So these comfortable middle class, somewhat naïve, young college kids wanted to help stop the bloodshed somehow. They were passionate. Sometimes brave, sometimes foolish, but that's how most young people are.
So here she's matured. She has insight into her own behaviors & has developed her way of thinking. I don't understand why a commenter would call her self-righteous or stupid. Sometimes people standing up for something are simply acting righteously.
    Very impressive interview/document.

Unfortunately, there was such a lack of radical opposition in the USSR against their own war crimes. All of them would have been sent to mental hospitals where quack shrinks forced pain-causing medicine. Amnesty International confirmed this in the 1980's.

I wouldn't say there was no cause for them to go. Look at Pol Pot in Cambodira. But they didn't have enough strategy to properly deal with the situation. A bit too brazen. It was a big learning curve for US foreign policy and shaped how they dealt with Kuwait and Iraq. This collapsed with 9/11. A difficult time in history all around

This woman has given a lot of thought and soul searching into her past, and is clearly still passionate about her principles. I knew some of the Weathermen , but my activities at that time were helping Draft Dodgers into Canada, and building new identities for them. I also respected, (and still do), those men who went to Vietnam for a variety of reasons…I just believed the men should have a choice. I used to help prepare new people for peaceful protest, telling them no violence, no trespassing, have a buddy system, and stick to the topic. Over time, I would give the talk without listening to myself, and one day I was surprised to hear myself saying…”And when the cops charge, fall to the ground, take a foetal position, clasp your hands over the back of your neck and pretend you have already been hit.”. Gradually, the protests had evolved into physical confrontations, and we weren’t starting the escalation of violence, but we DID become more accustomed to it, and took it in stride. We added things to our list, like eye protection, water and face covering…but we never added weapons. Thank you for sharing part of her story with us, she is an excellent speaker.🖤🇨🇦

The Weathermen confused violence with milantancy & eventually triggered the downfall of the more peaceful anger of the SDS protests. This woman is right to point out that the knowledge of DowChemical,s involvement as a major tipping point. Along with ROTC recruiting on the campuses.
Many of my older brethren always will say " the violent protests were inishiated by the police, & embellished by the media. This woman, years later, recognises that the right voices were being drowned out by the minority of a more revolutionary faction.
This I believe is a cautionary tale for activists today. She gives an interesting honest retrospective of her feelings , years apart.

I would like to believe that, however I just listened to a VERY interesting interview RFK Jr gave and he talked about the CIA's involvement in the assassination of his uncle JFK and his father RFK. He said, JFK was going to pull our troops out of Vietnam and he was assassinated for it. His Father was also going to end the war and it was clear he was most likely going to win the presidency and he was assassinated for it as well. In his farewell speech 2 days before JFK took office, Eisenhower warned us about the power and corruption of the military industrial complex and how it is the enemy from within. If they are willing to assassinate our POTUS and a Senator that may have become POTUS over the Vietnam war I doubt people protesting the war, no matter how many, would have had any meaningful impact. And I say this with a heavy heart btw, 2 of my brother in laws were in Nam. It was a really fascinating interview, it's on UA-cam.

Recently, I just finished reading A Tale of Two Cities. One of the things the book taught me was that tyranny can arise from causes that started out with noble intentions. In the case of the French Revolution, the French citizenry had a legitimate desire to extinguish the power of the aristocracy, but like most social reform movements, they allowed the most bitter and radical among them to rise to the top. As a result, they ended up destroying their country. They executed anyone who even had the slightest connection to an aristocrat, including children. Many of the founders of the revolution ended up losing their ends. In the end, they just replaced one tyranny with another tyranny. This isn’t a left or right issue; it can happen to any movement. What happened on the sixth of January certainly evokes shadows of previous reigns of terror, but it can happen to any movement, left or right.

Mr. Hoffman, thank you for this insightful video. I was a 60's radical, protesting the war, worked as a volunteer in an experimental racial integration summer camp, had my run-ins with the fuzz and the hard hats, even ran for office on the Liberal Party line in NY. I still have my Moratorium button from old times. However, I was no bomb thrower. My friends and I never saw the Weathermen and their ilk as anything other than dangerous anarchists. Listening to this woman talk in 1989 is fascinating. She comes across to me as childish, showing no reflection on her attitudes and actions in those times, maintaining absolute moral certainty about herself. I also was certain about my convictions and my actions at the time. However, unlike this woman, as I matured and gained some perspective with time, I realized how naive and simplistic I had been. This video gives me insight into how the worst of the 60's has carried over to today's college campuses today. College students are still just as naive and certain that they have the moral high ground. Unfortunately, the "love" that we professed has now been replaced by a totalitarian hate.
What a long strange trip it's been.

I find all of your work in the great tradition of great journalists and historians I have long admired--to document rather than interject yourself into the story line.
I cannot however say the same for the comments below so many of which complete miss her point on what perspective taught her. So many wish to praise her or condemn her on such abstract grounds and wholly without the context of her very specific actions. How to do that without being by her side and in her ahead as she did what she did? I simply cannot, but can only listen and hear between the lines.
The fabric of society was clear torn and ripped apart during those years. And we picked up some of the pieces, others remain lost or elusive. We still need time to heal. Let us hope the country does not force itself down a path in which a similar look in the mirror results in the same type violence as in those years. We are still recovering and would not handle it well.

Perhaps add some context with a profile of the Weathermen's crimes/ achievements. Otherwise it appears an isolated and meaningless interview for those not familiar with 1960s Activism. Same goes for Communist China and their treatment of Uigars, Tibetans, and Hong Cong people? Basically, in the U.S. it is comfortable for this American making this movie. Also, how many Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Loatians left to live in the U.S. when the Communists won as apposed to Afghans fleeing to Russia? LOL!!!!

The 1960's and 1970's were turbulent years because of Vietnam policy. The government was lying to Americans about the war and why it was necessary, which was all a lie. The frustration of not being able to do anything about it is understandable, but I have to say, that although understandable, it was crazy to just arbitrarily decide that to protest the war by committing acts of violence in the form of bank robberies and bombings, and which was a mistake. Trying to change policy by committing violence wasn't the answer. I'm sure they would have been more effective instead of violence, finding more creative ways to convince law makers. However, no matter what, it wouldn't be easy. Committing violence didn't help their cause, unfortunately, and just made matters worse.

This is specific to the experience of those in imperialist countries. The settlers and colonizers. Revolutionaries of colonized nations went about changing society differently. She's talking about love vs violence here but in colonized nations their violence is combined with their love. Love for their own people and hate for those that would hurt their people. White radicals hate their people because they feel that they're the ones hurting those other people. There is no force to rally against except themselves.

  • @harmonyqueue

We forget that propaganda was as prolific in the past. The anti-Vietnam protests in the US were instrumental to the Viet Cong's guerrilla movement in South Vietnam. It was used to prove that the US didn't actually want Vietnam to have its own democracy, it actually wanted to turn Vietnam into another America. So, everything this woman did and said actually worsened everything by magnitudes. She became the communist prop that led to more and more extremist tactics between Vietnamese, as more and more people became convinced that supporting the communist path was Vietnam's only hope for itself. This is exactly what Yuri Bezmenov described in his famous interview, which when one realizes the communist movement in Vietnam was the product of Russian interventionism after WW2 to keep the US from establishing military power in South Asia after Japan's slave trade was ended. In a lot of ways, yes, it was a bad idea for Americans to take up the fight for South Vietnam. But knowing the oft-unmentioned details, it's hard to believe that a lot of the worst of that war was specifically the result of people like this woman and Jane Fonda. These people became the posterchildren for a new threat of western expansionism, which only incentivized VC to fight with more brutality. I wonder if she ever thinks of the 1+ million Vietnamese that narrowly avoided mass slaughter because of the Saipan evacuations. She should. She played a huge role in the war ending with the Viet Cong literally killing and destroying everyone and everything that was affiliated with democracy.
