    ****UPDATE PLEASE READ THIS****
    Apparently some species of Laccaria can bioaccumulate Arsenic from the environment and when this happens, eating a large quantity of such mushrooms could expose you to a greater dose of arsenic than is recommended. This effect will vary depending on the soil concentration of arsenic, however, since that is not easy to know without testing, this is a risk you must consider for yourself.

      Thank you for this. But I hate them all equally and won't bother eating them. They are nonetheless a treat for macro photography, in the proper light :D

      I was taught that all mushroom can potentially do this. Fungi along the roadside can have cadmium and lead from car pollution. Stay away from old fruit orchards, and flower beds cause they used arsenic in bug repellants.

    Just wanna let you know that your videos really do make a difference for me. I'm fresh out of highschool and have lost my direction in life and sometimes I find myself just sorta bumming about my room and not really living. But your videos, everytime I see you upload it brings me joy and helps drive away depressing thoughts and get me out of my funk. I hope you never feel that your work making these videos goes to waste. Sometimes I go to the European supermarket and buy canned foods to eat with you. Thanks and keep being you, you funky brit!

      Enjoy these moments. One day, hopefully for you, you'll find what drives you and makes you almost feel guilt to get paid for doing this thing you like to do so much, it's hard to stop and have a life outside. Take your time, be patient, open your mind, be attentive, relax and DON'T BE TOO HARD ON YOURSELF :D

    Because of your videos like this, I decided to actually get out of the house this morning and go look at what fungi and plant-life I have in the area. I didn't pick or eat any, of course, as I couldn't identify them. The experience was fun, though.
    So, thank you: I feel like I did something useful, healthy, and generally a turn to a healthier way of living. I look forward to going back to see if I might be able to tentatively identify them. Still won't be eating any of it until I'm ABSOLUTELY certain what's safe, but the experience exploring the area was wonderful enough. I don't think I'd have done so without your influence.

    Goodness, I wish I could do something like this. Mushroom foraging is neither safe or fun in tropical climate, though. So I’ll have to stick to picking oranges for now. This was a pleasure to watch. Thanks for sharing and for helping me become confident about making my own crepes someday. :D

    Right on, bro! I'm a novice forager & mycologist here in Missouri, and I enjoy the format of your videos: 1) the search 2) find/identify 3) meal prep from your harvests. And I must say - you are a darn good cook! You don't require any 'Betty Crocker' recipe printouts as I do...!

    Of course most of us enjoy your scambaiting videos, but this is quickly becoming one of my favorite series on your channel: just foraging for mushrooms. It's genuinely so cool to know that if you know what to look for, you CAN forage in urban environments! You CAN just go right outside and find what you need! And I just think that's so cool. Maybe I'll go outside and look at the mushrooms and plants near me. Not eat them yet, but just admire them. :>

    • @Dockhead
      @Dockhead 5 років тому +8

      maybe just eat it and stop making a drama on it specifically, i mean when your in the action of eating, i told a friend this and try to eat whilst sort of doing something maybe diy project or washing down something etc
      your mind gets occupied by the situation and hopefully the physical feeling of hunger will drive more and stop the 'childlike palate' from regarding the food as something to think about.

    I think that one reason I really appreciate and enjoy your various videos because they are both practical and whimsical. I never, ever watch cooking shows (absolutely hate everyone else's offerings both on TV and UA-cam) yet I enjoy yours. Yes, you help us experience strange ingredients, but it's not presented in a way to shock or titillate us but rather to educate and entertain us. Thank you; I honestly admire you.

    Looks delectable! I had to look, and apparently these grow around here, but in all the years I spent being outdoors I don't recall ever seeing 'purple' mushrooms. I will have to look though. I was taught how to find Morel mushrooms, but nothing else, and I've never made any attempts on mushrooms I don't know anything about. I wouldn't mind going to a nature center and they have mycology experts that can teach a few that are safe. I may try that. Thanks for the video AS.

    On cooking mushrooms. If you get your pan smoking hot before adding anything, then throw in the mushrooms and the butter together, the butter won’t burn, and the mushrooms won’t sweat out the moisture. Keep the heat on high, keep the mushrooms moving, and you get the richest possible flavour and the mushrooms go a lovely nutty brown. They take only three or four minutes at most, so quicker too. I have used this method for over forty years. Never fails, and nothing sticks to the pan, even an old iron skillet.

    Looks very appetising, although I would never have the confidence to forage for mushrooms. I'd have to rely on Morrisons.

    couldnt you wok the mushrooms, to have them stay purple? I had some purple sprouts last christmas, and iirc I was advised to just not cook them too long. Sadly, I'm a philistine about vegetables, I prefer them a little more mushy, so I still cooked the -umph- out of them.

    At different points, I wasn't sure what you were doing; making Yorkshire pudding of the pan drippings (butter), or some other sort of bread-type thing.
    I probably would have made my crepe(s) thinner, but, I like very thin crepes. I think that's the first thing most people in my family learned to cook, we ate them so often (like every Saturday..)

    About 3 years ago I was hiking in a trail behind my friend's house when we stumbled upon these mushrooms. We didn't know what they were and now stumbling across this video I have finally figured out the mystery of the weird mushroom thingy

    I saw loads of mushrooms around this weekend after the rain but didn't get a chance to go foraging. Lots of fairy ring (yum) and others that I didn't identify. Looks like I should've had a romp. And what forest was it that had chantarelles round here? I haven't seen any locally but saw loads in Scotland

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  5 років тому

      Chanterelles can be found throughout the UK - in my experiemce, they tend to favour open, mixed broadleaf woodland - especially where there is a mix of oak, beech and holly - and especially places where there are mossy banks.
      Obviously I can't share precise locations, but I have seen them in the New Forest and in woodland on the South Downs

    You could try and sprinkle some lemon juice on them before they go into the pan. The juice helps most vegetables hold their colors, why shouldn’t it work with shrooms? Worth a try

    I'm still pretty new to eating mushrooms having hated them my whole childhood and teen years, so I'm very unimaginative with how I tend to use them. Never considered they might be good with cheese, I'll try out that combo thanks!

      Oh yeah, mushrooms with cheese! Any combination that works on pizza can be pulled out for use elsewhere

    Good info, thanks. I like your pan 11:37. I have a cast iron one, but it's very difficult to clean. Where is it available? Thanks.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  5 років тому +1

      I think the nonstick pan is CeraCraft - it sort of doesn't matter - it's just a nonstick pan that I only ever use for omelettes and pancakes - after use, it is gently washed, wrapped and put away.
      The thing that ruins nonstick pans quickly is 'general purpose' usage such as browning meat, frying potatoes, etc - for this, I use my cast iron skillets (the small one has 25 years of seasoning through continued use)

    • @AtomicShrimp

      I've not had a problem with them. They do tend to fall off during cooking, so there are times when it might be preferable to remove them just from an aesthetic viewpoint - for example in a dish of stir fried vegetables the detached spikes, although soft and edible, are like crumbs

    You may try dehydrating the mushrooms before you cook them. It may help preserve the color.

    • @AtomicShrimp

      I've dried them before - they just turn brown. Freeze drying would probably preserve the colour, but I am not geared up for that

    My favourite mushroom, though they don’t taste of anything much. Some books say you can eat them raw, others say to cook them due to bacteria. I tried them raw, 1 small one to see if allergic, honestly I’d still cook them if you’re having a lot - No ill effects raw but didn’t eat enough to know, I doubt I’d get sick but… cook them
