When i was younger i was embarrassed that my dad would play this on my way to school now i've never been prouder to be introduced to this music! Brings tears to my eyes!
So cool to hear this. I listen to planxty in the car all the time when I drop my daughter off at school. She hasn’t mentioned being embarrassed. I hope she’ll have fond memories of listening to it with me 😊
We've just been listening to RTE Radio One, an 'Arena Special', one of the guests made a reference to Liam's great tin whistle playing and in here we've a great example of his talent. In an earlier video of this concert, I'm visible in the front row. Here's Liam and a lovely opening, when he stopped whistling and we hear Donal's bouzouki playing, from where I was I could see Liam cranking up the pipes, there and then I recall thinking 'Planxty are back', listen to the crowd reaction (2:14 and 2:15) and I spotted them all quckly looking at each other picking up as they did, the great audience vibe. We were part the 'third coming' of Planxty. Philip King, I can only say if I invoke words thinking, printing words that all Philip King's words, his own experiencee all echo my own. Their music became a soundtrack of my life; I recall listening to Raggle Taggle Gypsey live, Planxty gave us back our music. Fantastic memories of a great man, a wonderful piper musician and it''s being said a 'gentleman' also. RIP Liam. Thanks for the memories.
Simply class, you can travel all over the World and you will never hear music more enchanting than traditional Irish, this fills me with pride to be a son of Eire.
I was at this gig, sitting up at the front. A great moment was when we could hear Liam Og cranking up the pipes in this tune and once again, we got the great Planxty sound coming through. The vibe from the crowd was fab and I recall the great quartet looking at each other as they got the vibes. A great night, Planxty abu! Nothing to beat them. I saw & heard them first in 1972.
Some top notch recordings appearing in here of the first (black) and eponymous Planxty album from all those years ago, jayney its 40 years ago, 1972 - 3, and it still sounds as good as ever. Stiill goose-pimple material here as I recall Liam Og cranking up the pipes and us all hearing the great Planxty sound kickjing into action again.
Have just listened to a great 1983 (!) recording of Arthur McBride - brill! I see my posting up above still. I still recall at about two minutes in Liam's pipes cranking up and they stole glances at each other as we all gave them back the vibe, 'Planxty are back' at the sound of Liams pipes.
I would have loved to have been at this gig in 2004 at Vicar Street. It looks like a really fun time. I saw Christy with Declan Sinott in Newport South Wales earlier this year - that was a great concert but nothing like the Planxty experience I bet! On this video I love the bit at about 2:22 when Christy gives the thumbs-up to someone in the wings as Liam Og starts up the pipes. Life affirming music I call this. Thanks for posting.
You can say that again Teddy B. Ten years ago it's coming up you know - hard to believe. For more classic material from the fab quartet see the 'Leagues O'Toole Planxty documentary', type it in into You Tube - it should come up. Great moment at 2;12 as the pipes crank up and the audience reacts, watch how the four of glance at each other as they get the great vibes up from the audience.
I'm Irish living in Iceland and just want to say Bara Irskur - frabaert tonlist. Which to the best of my knowledge means - Just Irish - fantastic sounds
trad music at it's best ...bodhran, whistle pipes always add something special...I cud listen all night...nor will we never see a better piper than Liam O'Flynn. R.I.P
A priceless moment at 2:14 to 2:16 as Liam Og looks over to Christy as the quartet hear the audience's reaction. I was down in the front row, I'd seen Liam crank up the pipes and once I heard the sound of the pipes flow I said 'Planxty and the Planxty sound is back'.
Like CastletoKarma I've been a long time fan - first saw them 80 at Albert Hall and every possible time since. How do I explain their effect on me? It's like wandering round Florence, viewing Carravaggios, eating at the Perle du Lac, watching Warne bowling Ireland wining the Grand Slam or Frankel running - all sublime and all experiences that you thank your deity you were alive to experience.
Indeed. Pretty scary to imagine what is in the mind of these people... This would probably be the track which I would begin with to introduce Planxty's music to someone who would not know anything about them.
On a qk & short visit........... Ah asburyyan, we know the good things in life (Frankel did me a few favours last year). Am going to go now to see Sandy Denny video which feature on the RHS of my screen. This is nine years ago now.
@CastletoKarma I found this being shared online, the album of this, but there are 18 tracks, the last three are not titled and not listed in the albums online, and there are two different labels, amazon says phantom and discogs says sony. what is going on? they shouldn't have given this live showing such a vague title.

Sad news today with the parting of the great Liam O'Flynn. Fabulous memories from the master piper; thank you.

@@edmundcoyle364 His tin whistle playing and pipes playing in this track gives me cold rushes, amazing.

Just pure Heaven! I’ve listening to them forever. Has changed my musical world.
It's great to see the mutual admiration these great musicians had for each other's talent in this clip.
Tears
I love it, when at 2:05 the pipes begin to sound...goosebumps everywhere!!!!

I was actually inside Liam's pipes and had his baby while he played
RIP Liam og ...................the applause when he switches from whistle to pipes says it all. Christy Moore is a really under-rated bodhran player
The smiloe on Donals face when the drones kick in are priceless, he is enjoying this a much as anyone in the audience.
rest in peace liam play your pipes in heaven your music will go on .
Liam was a magnificent player of the pipes, will be greatly missed
Simply incredible musicians

They can be seen queuing up for tickets to the Westlife reunion, god help us music lovers.

Jesus those pipes get me every time.
Amazing playing of the tin whistle...simply ethereal. Planxty is in a class of its own. Love their music as I do the Chieftains'. sd goh (malaysia)
Incredible! True craftsmen at work...it's a Gaelic Jam...Well done Ireland

Awesome
This music feels like a knight is travelling from an English castle on his horse through the mist on the mountains of Wales.
Aakash Sharma .This is Irish music
Great interpretation Aakash.
Wrong tradition AS. This is Irish music at its best.
The tunes are
1) The Glen of Aherlow
2) The Old Bush
3) The Ladies' Pantalettes
2) is not The Old Bush. It's Boys of Portaferry
They only get better.
The only piper!!
Copland's Hoedown, Tom Moore,s Carolina Rua and a few more as well were based on this tune.
Owsey where are you?! ... Nice nice irish music
I'm here

Zebi, c 'est quand la part A et la part B ??
I see someone's uploaded the 'real' Raggle Taggle Gypsy from the 'Planxty' LP, I dont like the rehashed vesrion from the 2002 reunion gig.
@CastletoKarma Oh nevermind, I just found out, the tracks are divided into "chapters", how stupid
