Squirrel Town don't let cost stop you. Go around to job sites in your area. Ask them for any excess materials they they are just gonna throw away. Show them your videos. They May even setting stuff aside for you. Take your parents but you do all the talking.
Ask for the superintendent. Don't just walk on the sight. Have your parents make initial contact. Since children are not allowed on job sites.
Many times it actually helps them out by not having to haul off excess materials.
Be nice but confident. Don't start pushing or begging.
If you get a good reputation and relationship with them, they might even call you when they get other job sites. Hell in time they might even hire you to do it for them. Or even give you a job.
You could even ask for scrap metals and get money from recycling.
    Keep up the good work.

As a kid my friends and I made underground clubhouses almost the same way they do here. As time went on and we learned of flooding we started putting a thin concrete floor in with a drain as they were usually on a hill or side of a ridge it made it easier to drain also we used thick plastic around the sides and tin on the roof before putting dirt back over all of it. Used a hatch or trap door for entry and one even had a fireplace made from an old metal trash can. Good Times! Kids today are more into couches, video games and tater chips lol

Safety Warning: I think what you guys are doing is superb and incredibly impressive.
But please note that one cubic metre of water = one metric tonne weight. If a section of earth becomes saturated during rain fall and suddenly decides to shift, thats a fucktonne of weight bearing down on your wooden bracing. Your design and materials are solid and quality ... but there are a few areas where putting in a cross brace or two would REALLY provide mechanical support to the wooden structure. 2 inch thick wood either side of a tunnel is great ... but you need something to stop that bracing collapsing in on itself. Throw in a few more struts just for good measure.
Apologies for being the armchair expert, I think what you are doing is awesome, I just want to see you stay safe.

Another idea would be to use the same water soluble all surface sealer mixed with 50% water or less on the sides & bottom of the tunnel before wood supports & walls are put in. They will water proof the sides & bottom of your tunnels for a few years. You could also soak the wood for a few minutes in that & dry them so they won't rot so easily & last longer.

Good effort. For cheap waterproofing, assuming dirt covers the top, you can invest in water soluble all surface sealer, the kind you can use on brick, wood & porous stuff. Buy a few gallons. Mix in 50% water. Spray on top of the dirt including a few feet from the sides. When it dries the dirt will harden and be water resistant for a few years. Your big problem though will be seepage in the tunnels.

    • @SquirrelTown
      @SquirrelTown  6 років тому +1

Yea we’ve had a lot of seepage. We kind of been just hoping it isn’t flooded when we go out there. But yeah we should invest in something like that

So this might be totally pointless and using wood will make it fall apart in two years.
But isn't this what freedom is all about, their opinion counts.
I figure it will leak like a sieve and fall apart pretty soon but that's only my opinion.
It's so easy to put people down.
But they are not doing drugs, playing with guns, getting into fights or drinking, all the really pointless pursuits. Even if the wood construction does fall apart they will learn something; all that digging will build up their muscles, make them healthier.
I am 100% behind the rights of young men to do stupid things because most men here can remember doing similar stupid things. Men have a long tradition of doing stupid things, we are very good at it.

I don't know if you all are in the prepper movement but a few tweaks & you guys could build a viable SHTF off-grid bug-out shelter. Try learning how to make bullet proof walls though. Cheapest idea I got is sand bags walls filled with 1/2 inch size gravel stones. Another is baked clay bricks if you have a viable source for clay. Much more labor intensive though.

They should make a call of duty map based on this. It would be great! And it looks like trenches! The tunnel would be the middle of the map. Other then that you guys did a amazing job!

Actually in America anybody who lives in Tornado country, and doesn’t have a basement in their house, or lives in a mobile home or trailer, a project like shown here could be a life saver. In a Tornado you need to get below the ground. Something adequate to get you underground would take a full grown man maybe a month of weekends to construct.

So many mistakes made in the boarding I do not know where to begin! I only hope that no one is inside when the first boards collapse as they surely will as soon as there is any significant rain fall and the ground becomes water logged. The weight and the forces will not be held back by a few self tapping screws..there is no point in bracing the top boards, the ones under the least strain, if all of the lower retaining boards are not!..I only hope that it first floods and makes it totally inaccessible and therefore safe..its the only way it will be.

Probably should have put some vapor barrier between the wood and dirt so it could last longer, maybe some drain spouts to catch the excess water to stop it from coming in when it rains.
