    A tip for the “beginners”: don’t get a projector screen at the beginning. If you can use a white wall and then further down the line get an acoustically transparent screen, where you can put your speakers behind it. This saves some money and it makes setup much easier, as when you don’t line it up properly you don’t see the imperfections. Also you’re not fixed to a specific screen size and aspect ratio. Of course having a screen might be necessary. I just project the image of my Benq on the wall and it looks great! Thanks for the great video! Hope you’re doing well!

      Hey thanks for the tip! I was considering getting a movie projector for my home office where I like to wind down after work and watch movies. I live in my parents house so we have a 55 inch and a 65 inch TV but I definitely like to go bigger with a 100 inch or bigger for a more cinema movie experience. Also, I am not a rush buyer so I like to research specs and finding out details about its quality first before buying. This will not be my permanent home office theater for long because at some point I will move out my parents house one day so therefore it will be as easy to just unplug and pack away the projector.
      By the way. If I want to go surround sound say a 5.1 surround sound which is what I am looking into getting. I could just find a placement for the left, center, and right speakers and then scale up my screen in an area where I would be watching. Or vice versa?

    "Tony's Projector List" is almost exactly what I've been running with for maybe a year and a half now, except I've got a Klipsch center channel. I wanted to double the room as a VR room and my old setup was too bulky, but I didn't wanna go crazy spending money either. I was scared I was going to take a big hit in sound quality but for movies in a small room it still sounds pretty full. Music on the other hand when you're doing fast turns while pulling off incredible dance moves doesn't sound as good but it was worth the compromise for my situation.

    The key to a great home theater is planning in my opinion. You don't need to buy everything together, but as long as you plan you will not go wrong. A small suggestion is start by buying a TV/projector, then buying a good AVR and start with 2 good bookshelf speakers, then just use those 2 bookshelves as surrounds once you save enough money to buy your front left, center and right speakers. Eventually you can install Atmos speakers and so on

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  4 роки тому +1

      Planning often comes from experience... which sadly when you start this hobby you don't have, which is kinda why I make these videos, so people can see whats involved (from a DIY perspective) and then pick and choose what works for them.

    • @CharloBagis
      @CharloBagis 4 роки тому

      I agree. This is my second home theater and I learned from the mistakes I did on my first one, though nowadays there is so much content online, thanks to people like you, that it's very easy to research beforehand. This is why this time I was able to plan better, I still have a lot to do, still don't have any lighting, need to do more research on an all in one remote, also waiting for the next iteration of the Google Nest Home. That's the beauty of DIY home theater in my opinion, it's an ongoing project, where you constantly learn and improve

    Got my first full time job in IT! I remember in your other videos you mentioned you are in IT or were in IT. I am definitely looking forward to one day buying my own house and have an epic home theater setup! Here is the story, I first started with building a computer. Then I realized as I got more monitors, I started running out of space to work with on my small desk. I researched and saved up money after being inspired by TechSource and randomfrankp. Built my first IKEA desk setup. Now I am into movie entertainment because that is what I find relaxing after work at the end of the day. I've seen loads of examples of home theaters and my gosh people have really taken their designs to the next level whereas my parents are just basic and don't need anything fancy cause they are such a boomer. I am all about quality over quantity. Right now as for me just starting out my career and that is quantity over quality. Because I chose quantity, technology has gotten so good that for something so cheap is considered to be good until you have enough money for an upgrade. You just need external peripherals to bring out the best of your experience from gaming to watching movies. Once I make enough money, I'll begin to look into quality.

      @@BuildMontage Thanks! I will stay subscribed to you to stay up-to-date with future contents. Once I move out and buy my own home, I would love to have a home theater with plenty of space to play VR, regular gaming, and watch movies all in one space if I could execute all of that. The only flaw with building a home theater setup is if you live in a house that was built from the 90's or earlier, the rooms are small or narrow and were actually designed to fit those fat 4:3 TV's. With the newer houses built in recent years, we have come to a more squarish and rectanglular rooms instead of some odd shape rooms so that you can have more flexibility for bedrooms, office and home theaters or a combination of those three if you can execute that idea.

    • @TorinTPG
      @TorinTPG 4 роки тому +1

      I do not own a Denon, but you can generally toggle the rear surrounds as rears or heights. For the Denon, this should enable the Atmos functionality. Also, 7.1 is not atmos. It would be 5.1.2. 5 ear height, 1 sub, 2 atmos height

  • @Quetzalcoatl0
    @Quetzalcoatl0 4 роки тому +1

    Me personalty i don't like both :D, But i think Matts one better. His speakers are balanced and will play nicely, his center channel is beefier and we know that the center channel is the most used one. The Pioneer ones, the center is a baby, the towers won't be able to be pushed, because the rest of the system will be lacking, it's an unbalanced system. I would also get a denon over a pioneer.
    I would go in ceiling if possible, if not on top of the speakers works great!
    On Matts setup i really wanted to get a beefier sub. That klipsh for the price is good, i may reduce the projector to the benq one and spend an extra for a second sub. Problem is that you need to spend on calibration gear in order to make both subs work, going with a single sub mostly eliminates this issue.
    These setups are probably going in a living room instead of a dedicated room, remove that one seater chair and use your living room couch most people will have.
    For the TV i would also go with Matts Sony over samsung. You can go cheaper will a 75inch or even a 65 inch. Most rooms won't be able to fit bigger TVs so money can be saved there. If we consider again that this setup is going in a living room, and the person already has a decent TV then a HT can be build for half of the price.
    Nvidia shield FOR LIFE!

      Interesting perspective. The Pioneer aren’t that bad actually. Have you heard them in person? I love Klipsch - that’s what I have in my own theater - but I wanted to try something different for this little challenge. There may be more of these types of videos coming, potentially. Be interested to see your list for $5k. Maybe you can make one and link it?

      @@BuildMontage i'm not from the USA and i have to spend some time looking how the prices are there. I'm more familiar with the Europe prices and europe products.
      I'm not saying the Pioneer speakers are bad. It's just that the center channel has 2x 4 inch drivers, while the towers have 1x 5.25 inch for mids and 2x5.25 for bass. One is a 2way the other is a 3way.
      They won't have the same synergy and panning details between the center the LR. That's why i though the klipsh setup would have better sound stage. The klipsh has 6.5 for the tower, the center is using a 2x5.25 and the surrounds are using a 4inch. Still not perfect but really close for the LCR. Also their crossover is lower, it will reduce beaming problems. The pioneer center is crossed at 3khz, ouch.
      I love videos like there :).

      The Sony X800H is a marginally better TV than the Samsung TU8000. The differences come down to their panels, as the Sony has an IPS panel, so it has much better viewing angles. It also supports a wide color gamut and the out-of-box color accuracy is much better, plus it can get significantly brighter. On the other hand, the VA panel on the Samsung delivers a much better dark room performance with an excellent contrast ratio and incredible black uniformity.

    Things have changed since this video dropped.
    Now you can buy a dedicated 13.2 channel processor for $1300 (Tonewinner or Emotiva MC-1)
    So I would get one of those and two BasX A7 Amplifiers for a total of $2700.
    A $500 1080p projector/screen
    5 pair of the Monoprice 65RP $70/pr $350
    1 pair of the monopice T65RT towers $135
    Monoprice C65RT center $60
    Polk PSW10 x4 $150 ea $600 total.
    That would give me over $600 left for mounting hardware, a chair, cables/wires and covers and room treatments.
    That would give me a projector with a 100" (or 120") screen and 7.4.6 Dolby Atmos and DTSX.

    I'm working on a 10k build right now - so far this is what I have spec'd/priced out - Theater seating Newton powered sofa and loveseat ($2550 gardner white), STR-169128-G Silver Ticket Products, 128" Diagonal - ($340), Epson 4040 ($1769) Denon IN-Command Series AVR-X6500H 11.2 Channel AV Network Receiver ($1499), Speakers: RP-8000F (fronts), RP-504C (center), RP-502S (Sides) RP-6000F (rears) Polk Audio AW0080-B RC80i (Atmos Ceiling), R-112SW Sub's - ($4,125) - Fiber HDMI - 30' ($122) InstallGear 12 Gauge Speaker Wire - 99.9% Oxygen-Free Copper with 12 Banana Plugs (100-feet) ($48) - Lighting I have Philips Hue hooked up to alexa, I'll be using them for overheads and adding an LED light strip behind the screen (14.99) , building my own custom acoustic panels (50$ budget) and a Logitech Harmony Companion (99) all in $10,708 - I am still working on that price, I'll likely come down on the speakers, I like what Matt Spec'd out, so I'll likely take some advice there - but I am curious, I am not sold on the epson 100% yet. 13'7x21 foot room, I was looking at the Epson, the LG hu70 LAB and the BenQ 3550. I am up for suggestions in that price range for best bang for my buck. --- Thanks for the great videos!

The projector I have is the Epson TW9300, so glad I went with it - its fantastic. Dont have much experience with the other ones - I have demo'd the Benq lineup faux 4k it was pretty good but the epson was heads and shoulders better.

    Hey tony, I was wondering. Iv been doing alot of homework on the home theater world and one thing I'm still trying to figure out how to do is get the atmos full experience without messing with installing speakers in the roof. Rent an apartment so doing something like that would probably be a golden ticket to getting evicted. I noticed you mentioned some speakers that are capable of somewhat giving the atmos experience but you also commented that the experience was almost like a knock off or imitated at best, so WHAT would be the best option to go with. Even if I had to spend just slightly over the 5k mark?

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  4 роки тому +1

      I don’t like to tell people where to spend but are you looking at something like an SVS elevation speaker for on wall, angled? Or do you want to cut holes in the ceiling? You can get “bouncing” Atmos. An example is the Klipsch RP-250AF which has the upward foreign speaker in the top of the tower. Hope that helps!

    • @TorinTPG
      @TorinTPG 3 роки тому

      I've had my HT setup for over 3 years and still do not own a UHD player. I stream for 4k or utilize Plex. Between these two options, I've not found a need to purchase a standalone device. This is why I recommend the NVIDIA shield since it can do all of the 4k streaming app and makes a killer platform for running plex

      I'd have to agree with adding a disc player to the package, if I were configuring something from nothing. Leave out the lighting and universal remote to start. Borrow $100 from the $1k subwoofer budget. Panasonic and Sony make nice 4K players for $200-$300. After all, that's the best way to really see how GREAT your new TV or projector can look.

    Maybe you can do a home theatre for $5K in England where you live, but here in Canada, there's no way you could build a worthwhile theatre for less than 10K. You'll never find stuff that cheap over here. Almost everything in this video is twice that in Canada.

I've seen some neat setups that utilize a TV with some KILLER speakers and subwoofers that will immerse you more than a large screen
