I am a MEXICAN living in México.. and NO I am NOT ofended at all by this.. actually is nice to see people from other countries feel so fascinated with this mexican celebration.. AND YES it's all about remembering the ones who had pass on but I don't understand why people is soooo sensitive.. great vid michelle! loved it!
+Courtney Gross the day of the dead is a Mexican celebration to honor those who have died and remember them, not so much as a mourning but as a celebration for the good times they had on earth. And I'm Mexican, and proud to celebrate the day of the dead
+mary lucero it sounds cool I wish we did that. I mean yeah it's okay to be sad but in America I wish we had the day of the dead! Sounds like a great concept and celebration
I am mexican.. living in MEXICO my grandfather is a YOREME google it if you don't know what that is... and yes I do celebrate it is part of who I am and NO I am not offended.. greets!
I'm Mexican, born in Mexico and I do NOT find this disrespectful. Idk why people make such a big deal about it, if she's creating something beautiful and she is in no way making fun of it. Some people are just overly sensitive.
+Deirdre de la Rosa Because in america anything dio de los muertos has become a chance for white hipsters to have a party 15 days before the holiday where they dress up as sugar skulls get drunk and have coffin races. Its become second Halloween to them. And everyone I've talked to about it who, "has a deep spiritual connection to it," is also severely anti-religion and in particular any catholic. Which shows just how deeply connected to it, and how much research they've done on it.
So many people are hurt by this "cultural appropriation" but most of the people who are hurt aren't even Mexican -_- ya need to chill. Michelle clearly knows her history on what she's doing, she's not trying to steal anything and she gave credit where credit is due. Everybody is always trying to find fault in everything.
The reason why this is not appropriation is because, cultural appropriation occurs when you borrow something from another culture *and* you are ignorant on the subject. It's not like is she said "try this new trendy cool pretty skull" then that's cultural appropriation. But Michelle shows that she is quite knowledgeable on the Day of the Dead and uses information and educates the viewers about its significance. Therefore shes not appropriating
+Nyah Alexis Exactly, I mean this tutorial will be great for Book of Life cosplayers. The character, La Muerte is designed after sugar skulls and the whole movie revolves around the Day of the Dead. So in a nutshell, a majority of cosplayers who try to do La Muerte's look for their costumes are not appropriating Mexican culture, because the movie fully informed them about the holiday so they know about the holiday.
+Nyah Alexis riiigghhht I am fully informed about dreadlocks the history of them and the issues surrounding black hair, its still not appropriate for me to have them. But omg they're prettyy!!!!!! So that makes it okay.
Fainora nope go do you. Just know how take care of them. It's a protective style for black hair. Like if you wear box braids just because they're pretty and not know what you're doing you're gonna take them out to find that your edges have fallen out. Also don't try to call it something different. They're dread locks and the come from Africa and the Middle East. Not "hair knot twists" that Miley Cyrus created at the VMAs. If you respect my culture then we're all good :)
I am part Mexican. My great grandfather was born and raised in Mexico. Sugar skulls are meant to be shared and celebrated. That's the whole point of Dia de Muertos is to celebrate together in memory of our deceased loved ones.
+Benito Gonzalez Jr. My great grandmother was Puerto Rican and Brazilian. And my paternal grandfather was Haitian and Puerto Rican. On my mom side I'm Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Jamaican.
For the ignorant people who think this is disrespectful or racist, you should just stop the hate already. As a Hispanic myself, I'm proud that this culture is "out there" and that people are appreciating the beauty of it. It doesn't matter what race you are. I think it's more disrespectful for Mexicans and other Hispanics to say that you can't be a sugar skull if you aren't one of them.
THANK YOU. I'm not Hispanic but I celebrate Día de los Muertos. How is that racist? And even when people use sugar skulls as Halloween costumes, they're doing it out of appreciation, not mockery. I just don't understand why people consider that cultural appropriation, you know?
This is appreciating a beautiful culture respectfully. It would have been offensive if she had put on a sombrero and a poncho and called herself a Mexican.
This is the first video of yours that I've watched, and I must say, the way you speak is simply intoxicating. So poetic. I will definitely be watching more.
The amount of times I've watched this is unreal it's just such a beautiful piece and visually very satisfying also I find the music really peaceful even though it's not my usual genre I'd listen to
I would be a white rose because it represents (to me..) mystery and creating a blank slate for everyone to start fresh and new. also cause its really beautiful
people are so butthurt over something that involves on a celebration the day of your loved one that has passed away or whatever. "if you're not mexican, don't wear this!" eyeliner was created by the egyptians and was used to keep away evil with the eye.. so..
As a mexican, I don’t mind this video. Her intro was very informative and somewhat accurate (DDLM has nothing to do with the Spanish. It’s derived 100% from the Aztecs) Overall, I love how she was respectful enough to title this beautiful look in Spanish. Just please be respectful to our people and culture if you are going to recreate a calavera look. 😊
Dear Michelle, You truly are my role model. I read your new article on Teen Vouge. I own almost all of your EM series. You have inspired me to go out and continue my dreams of fashion and costume makeup. I am only 11 but I know someday I could meet you, but until then, YOU are inspiring. Thank You for giving me hope. Glimmer
Why do I keep seeing so many comments about cultural appropriation? I hope you guys at least stopped eating pasta and pizza because that's appropriating Italian culture
as a Mexican, I don't mind people painting themselves as Sugar Skulls, I think it's awesome that people acknowledge them. I don't like that people wear them as "costumes" for Halloween, because that's not what they are. They're for celebrating The Day of the Dead and honoring those who have passed.
I’ve really missed Michelle. I didn’t realize she left UA-cam until today. I used to watch her videos more than anything else. She was an inspiration to me...And she still is!
To everyone getting mad at Michelle for appropriating the Mexican culture: Halloween is the end of the Celtic year and marks the beginning of a triduum by the name of Allhallowtide. It is the Christian equivalent of Day Of the Dead, essentially, where they remember the dead of all departed Christians, including saints and martyrs and such. So to everyone getting butthurt over this video: grasp your ears and firmly pull your head out of your ass. If you're gonna complain about this then maybe you should educate yourselves complain about all those who aren't of said pagan or Gaelic or Celtic roots who celebrate Halloween. Celebrating Halloween as an American holiday is cultural appropriation in itself.
I feel so sad reading all these comments here. Do most people actually know what racism is? You are bashing a girl on the Internet for appreciating and sharing a look that came from another culture, and you guys are shouting RACISM! I believe that racism is still an issue nowadays but if you shout racism everywhere people won't be able to distinguish between what real racism is and not. And thus people won't care anymore about the real issues.
I'm also sure that if we wouldn't have shared our cultures/arts/knowledge with other people from around the world, the world wouldn't be as developed as it is now. Sure, we still have a long way to go, but hating someone on the Internet is not gonna solve it either.
My mom has a tattoo of this on her thigh. Even though she is not Mexican. Neither am I. I am Puerto Rican and my mom is not. I guess she got it because it is so beautiful. It truly is. :)
I personally don't care if people that aren't of Mexican descent do makeup like this. It's just when they use it for Halloween that makes me upset because Dia De Los Muertos is not supposed to be a Scary thing. It's mostly for celebrating the life of a loved one that has passed.😕
Eliza Maldonado Not all of Halloween costumes have to be scary. If you make it look beautiful and a part of a beautiful costume, then it's not at all scary. :^)
+Devan Jones The thing is that my culture is not just "a beautiful Halloween costume" that you can wear one day and wash it away the next one. That's what I find offensive. I don't mind non mexican people celebrating Día de Los Muertos and painting their faces as the girl in the video, but when you just do it because "it looks pretty" it's just not right, it's offensive. You are not respecting my culture. Cheers.
Daniela Gzz I was just saying that it's not scary. I never said that it was only pretty and that's all that it signifies. I was just saying that Dia de Los Muertos isn't scary at all, and in fact it's a beautiful celebration. You shouldn't act as if you are quoting me, because you aren't. If I offended you, it was never my intention. I truly respect your culture, and all cultures, and nothing I said was stating otherwise. Please stop assuming that I don't because that isn't and will never be true.
***** I would never wear this as a costume, myself. I, as I said earlier, was just telling the original commenter that this isn't scary. Again, if you're offended, I didn't mean to offend you. I, myself, didn't take this makeup as a costume, I know about Dia le Los Muertos and if I wanted to do this makeup look, I would do it then instead of halloween. You didn't have to call me an asshole because I never insulted you, or any other commenters. I never said "this costume is so pretty!! im soooo going to wear this for halloween." Goodness. Anyways, have a nice day. ;w;
You inspired me so much. After this video, I started doing face painting at birthday parties. I got better in drawing skulls. I started drawing flowers at the top and bottom of my drawing. Every video of yours is so inspiring, and taught me something new. Thank you ❤️
This isn't the most intricate, perfected sugar skull on YT but it's my favorite, hands down. Maybe it's the production value of the video itself, but it's just captivating nonetheless. Love the yin/yang combo of the cross above and the lotus below. Very deep meaning from 2 different spiritual traditions. Beautiful.
even if this was years ago i still come back to her videos ,her voice and techniques are so aesthetic and soothing. i love her so much she inspires me in life and makeup
I was asked to host a dia de muertos party for my school, so I'm making a traditional outfit and I'm going to use this as inspiration. My color scheme is going to be purple, teal and black since those are my favorite colors.
When she was explaining color combinations on the eyes it reminded me of coraline when the mom was like "Or purple... Or blue... Or tangerine... Or oh stop it you're going to make me jealous!" xD
"You're not Mexican" - I guessed she probably has no Mexican heritage, therefore having no real fondness of Dia De Los Muertos. "No clue of cultural appropriation" - Please point to where I said that exclusively Mexicans are the only ones who have a culture. Admit it, Mexico is probably the most unimportant country in the world. It's nice to see her own people standing up for themselves when they have the opportunity instead of being shot to death. Just as trying to look like a Geisha is cultural appropriation, why isn't this cultural appropriation? There isn't much of a difference.
+Caroline Kitten Its not "racist" or "offensive" when shes doing it because she thinks its beautiful. i personally love suger skulls and i jave studied the culture and i think its fascinating and im 100% American. it should not be offensive
Get a powder puff and buff it out in light circular motions ^.^ it also depends if it's a dry or moist base in the pancake makeup!-buy from Mehron, Ben Nye, and Makeup Forever if you want nice quality body paint :)
I believe that she had explained clearly in one of her old video from 2011, where she did the makeup inspired by the Day of Dead, that this day supposed to a day to remember your loved ones and not supposed to be scary. That means she understands the meaning of the day. I mean, she's done this makeup before, and she's just doing it again with a different design. stop judging her butthurt people ._. i'm from Asia, i don't really understand the meaning of the day, but Michelle had explained it before. So what's more to complain? and sorry for my freaking bad English. I'm from Vietnam and English is not my first language.
Why is everyone getting so angry? The argument I keep seeing is "this is disrespectful because it is a Halloween costume". She never said shit about Halloween; it was the people in the comments who said they were using it for a Halloween costume. So please stop getting mad at Michelle.
They weren't actually getting ma at her for "saying" she hates holloween...... it was the fact that she's doing a makeup tutorial on a culture and people think its racist a disrespecting the culture
Kayrel Magsayo loads of people do sugar skulls...and she is showing others how to create this amazing look step by step..?what is racist or offensive about that?
This is such a beautiful look! And for people who are offended - Michelle never said that this was for Halloween, and that it was for a Halloween costume. She simply was showing a tutorial on how to do a sugar skull look. She even mentioned the Day of the Dead, so she obviously understands and has respect for the celebration. :) Other tutorials might be more clueless and be using it for a Halloween costume, but this one isn't. I think it captures the beauty of the holiday and it makes me proud, not offended.
If you are *NOT MEXICAN* then you have no damn right to say that this is cultural appropriation. She knows it well enough to explain the importance of it and isn't wearing because it's a "trend"
So many butthurt Mexicans. It's just a costume, and honestly i don't care that shes not Mexican , i actually really like that someone from another ethnic background is seeing the beauty in our culture. Also she isn't some dumb white girl that just does this cause its "cute" she knows what it identifies, she obviously respects our culture. k bye
No but the reason we're "butthurt" is because it's not supposed to be scary or used for Halloween. El dia de los muertos is a day to remember your loved ones. But you're right at least it isn't some white girl using it cuz she doesn't have any time to make a costume and she does it cuz it's "cute"
+xxbeautyby yasxx I know, mish actually did research on el dia de Los muertos but I'm talking about those girls who use it because they think it's cute and because that's what everyone does for Halloween. It's quite disrespectful to some. But mish did research and she meant it look like a beautiful face painting :)
It’s 2019 and I keep coming back to this video because it’s satisfying when you apply the white face paint but Michelle you need to come back! I miss you. You left your 8.8m subscribers😔💕
patricia soto if you ever do crazy makeup like this again, smear petroleum jelly/vaseline all over your face. Let it sit for about 3 minutes then wipe it off. If it is really hardcore go back in with make up remover or baby oil. The baby oil should work better than the makeup remover, but it is an oil so it will clog up your pores. If you are unlucky you might get a breakout from the baby oil. Only use the baby oil if nothing will come off, or around the eye area where tricky mascaras and eyeliners may be!
Yeah but I'm guessing since you have Paige( I watch Dance moms too) as your profile pic that you like dance moms. A big star like Michelle phan probably wouldn't think much of it.
Just gonna say that this isn't a sugar skull, this is a catrina. Lots of people confuse them for some reason, but they are *not* the same thing. Also, not spanish, mexican.
Nivek Kevin I knkw your comment is old but Spanish is originating from Spain, Latin is Latin America, Mexican is not its own group it’s a subculture so yes she was wrong with saying Spanish but you are also wrong because it is Latin AND Mexican
2017: CuLtUrAl ApRoPrIaTiOn 2018: My CuLtUrE Is NoT A CoStUmE Edit: I apologize for this comment. You're right, your culture is not a costume. (this video isn't offensive to all Hispanics, though, as evident by the comment section.) I am so sorry for disrespecting your points, feelings, & opinions. I really do apologize.
2016: DaB iS dEaD 2017: cUlTuRaL aPprOprIaTiOn Edit: I apologize for this comment. I will try not to disrespect your opinions & feelings anymore. I can't speak for this video deciding what is racist or not, but I respect your opinions, as well as opinions on other things like this, too. I apologize.
I'm not trying to be rude in any way possible. But for everyone who is saying "this is disrespectful towards the the Mexican culture" or "my culture" is being disrespectful and selfish because you guys are acting like your culture is the only one that gets used as a "Halloween costume". And it's not, people dress up as traditional Native Americans, Germans, Dutch, and Japanese girls. Even some people dress up as Mexicans, such as wearing a sombrero. Don't say that I must have "no idea" what the day of the dead is about because I do.
+brianna hasinski There is an entire movement called my culture is not a costume that deals with that, but its so much easier to rationalize away that pesky thinking when its so pretty!
HOLY SHIT. you have no idea how insensitive you sound right now. saying "i'm offended" DOES NOT MEAN that they dont care for other cultures!! they arent acting that it's their own culture that's only being appropriated, LET THEM STAND UP FOR THEIR CULTURE.
it's amazing how much of a difference those light blue lines made. As soon as she started adding them they made the eye sockets looks so much more hollow as if she were really a skeleton. :)

My mom has a tattoo of this on her thigh. Even though she is not Mexican. Neither am I. I am Puerto Rican and my mom is not. I guess she got it because it is so beautiful. It truly is. :)
Also my mom has the lotus flower on her wrist
Wow that's so awesome C: it really is beautiful, i wanted to do this for Halloween or april fools day but my mom finds it creepy lol
WEEEE BORICUA
Michelle Phan: UA-cam OG lol watching her videos takes me back
The sharpness of the white the beautiful gradients it's so captivating! My gosh it's relaxing!
HOW COULD ANYONE DISLIKE THIS
the ppl who disliked this vid, r haters. HATERS GONNA HATE!!!
Right😤
2021 anyone? this video makes me feel so at peace. i just cannot explain it.
here. she's the only beauty guru i stan
UA-cam makeup GODDESS.
I really agree !!!
I was a sugar skull for Halloween last year loved it ♥️
I personally don't care if people that aren't of Mexican descent do makeup like this.
***** Thanks, at least someone gets it.
***** I would never wear this as a costume, myself. I, as I said earlier, was just telling the original commenter that this isn't scary. Again, if you're offended, I didn't mean to offend you. I, myself, didn't take this makeup as a costume, I know about Dia le Los Muertos and if I wanted to do this makeup look, I would do it then instead of halloween. You didn't have to call me an asshole because I never insulted you, or any other commenters. I never said "this costume is so pretty!! im soooo going to wear this for halloween." Goodness.
Anyways, have a nice day. ;w;
I'd be a dragonfruit flower. Although my name is after the Jasmine flower. I just love how complex the dragonfruit flower is. Complex yet beautiful.
I think this is my most favorite makeup tutorial from you!
You inspired me so much. After this video, I started doing face painting at birthday parties. I got better in drawing skulls. I started drawing flowers at the top and bottom of my drawing. Every video of yours is so inspiring, and taught me something new. Thank you ❤️
Could you do a Geisha Makeup turorial
Now this is cultural APPRECIATION! Thank you for sharing our culture yet not misusing it for a Halloween costume/ not knowing anything about it
I miss Michelle's makeup tutorials 😭
This isn't the most intricate, perfected sugar skull on YT but it's my favorite, hands down. Maybe it's the production value of the video itself, but it's just captivating nonetheless. Love the yin/yang combo of the cross above and the lotus below. Very deep meaning from 2 different spiritual traditions. Beautiful.
Still the best halloween make up tutorial
Does the part where she paints her whole body remind of little baby's icecream commercial..? Or am I just demented
Ramona Williams I just searched up the commercial. I am horrified.
haha...Your welcome
YOUR COMMENT LEFT ME DYING FROM LAUGHTER
MENTAL IMAGES ARE RETURNING XD
+Derp U le phan
I'm Mexican and I'm proud of it
even if this was years ago i still come back to her videos ,her voice and techniques are so aesthetic and soothing. i love her so much she inspires me in life and makeup
Okay, if white people cant do sugar skulls, I dont want to see non scots wearing plaid, or non irish celebrating st patricks day. Fair is fair.
THANK YOU
YES
Violet von Tesla I don’t celebrate holidays with green elves or wear plaid so it’s a win win
Violet von Tesla lol she’s Vietnamese but, excellent point
i've never celebrated it anyway. Keep your drunken holiday lol
Thinking about doing this for Halloween, idk if my mom will approve but its part of our culture so i hope she is okay with me doing this
Same--I have German heritage though, and like--I wanna do something based off of the Black Forest in Germany.
So, I tried to do this and failed miserably. Sigh :/
👋🏻👋🏻*patpat. It's ok
im going to us white face paint, black eyeliner and eyeshadows rather than face paint cause its probably a bit easier to blend
chi chi I wish you luck lol.
I would recommend doing white first then the color that's actually how you're supposed to do it
But don't fill in places with white that you'll have color
I was asked to host a dia de muertos party for my school, so I'm making a traditional outfit and I'm going to use this as inspiration. My color scheme is going to be purple, teal and black since those are my favorite colors.
your amazing and my inspiration
When she was explaining color combinations on the eyes it reminded me of coraline when the mom was like "Or purple... Or blue... Or tangerine... Or oh stop it you're going to make me jealous!" xD
people who are offended by this.. there are BIGGER problems in the world to worry about..move on
+Melly241000 100% agree
Like Trump being president
@@v4ni11aciti3s You sound like bitch. Get ready for 2020, bitch.
@@fluteseok Trump is going to win. I have seen the democrats that are trying for Presidency and they are below average. They will never, ever get in.
Tacitus Kilgore ok
How on earth, could I have overlook such mesmerizing art like this for so long.......
Oh my gosh. These suger skull tutorials are not racist or offensive in any way snap or form
i'm guessing you're not mexican and have no clue of cultural appropriation
exactly! i woukd think that if shes doing it that she likes it so they should be happy that she likes it enough to recreate it
Caroline Kitten "and have no clue of cultural appropriation" Yeah, Mexicans are the only people that have a culture.
How the hell did that costume face paint go on smooth? I added water to the same paint and it still cracked and dried up cakey.
Me too
Me too! Mish, please make a tips for this problem:\
She used a primer
Get a powder puff and buff it out in light circular motions ^.^ it also depends if it's a dry or moist base in the pancake makeup!-buy from Mehron, Ben Nye, and Makeup Forever if you want nice quality body paint :)
Do a x shape when you paint it that will help
I believe that she had explained clearly in one of her old video from 2011, where she did the makeup inspired by the Day of Dead, that this day supposed to a day to remember your loved ones and not supposed to be scary. That means she understands the meaning of the day. I mean, she's done this makeup before, and she's just doing it again with a different design.
stop judging her butthurt people ._. i'm from Asia, i don't really understand the meaning of the day, but Michelle had explained it before. So what's more to complain?
and sorry for my freaking bad English. I'm from Vietnam and English is not my first language.
I come back to this ever year 💜 it is just so calming and beautiful
Michelle is so adorable and so sweet!
Kayrel Magsayo loads of people do sugar skulls...and she is showing others how to create this amazing look step by step..?what is racist or offensive about that?
every beauty guru: It's okay if its not perfect, it's meant to be messy *draws perfectly*
Other tutorials might be more clueless and be using it for a Halloween costume, but this one isn't. I think it captures the beauty of the holiday and it makes me proud, not offended.
If you are *NOT MEXICAN* then you have no damn right to say that this is cultural appropriation. She knows it well enough to explain the importance of it and isn't wearing because it's a "trend"
It is like in "the book of life" flim
+I like Giraffes I don't think she meant for this version of it to be scary at all. :)
+I like Giraffes Oh I see now. Thanks. :)
+I like Giraffes Well, in my opinion you can still make it a costume, just have respect for the culture that lays behind it.
It’s 2019 and I keep coming back to this video because it’s satisfying when you apply the white face paint but Michelle you need to come back! I miss you. You left your 8.8m subscribers😔💕
OMG!!! how difficult will it be to remove...😂😲
I wonder how long that took to wipe all that make up off lol.
LOL! *****
I think maybe around 2 years exact lol
I did this once and it actualy took about 30min-1:00 hour
Really O.O patricia soto
patricia soto if you ever do crazy makeup like this again, smear petroleum jelly/vaseline all over your face.
Madison Ziegler (from dance moms) saw this! Congrats
That's not really a huge accomplishment, not really one at all
Chantel Spriggs If I was here I would be jumping up and down...
Yeah but I'm guessing since you have Paige( I watch Dance moms too) as your profile pic that you like dance moms. A big star like Michelle phan probably wouldn't think much of it.
Chantel Spriggs I do it's just i haven't chaned it in a while
I love how you did this! It definitely makes me think of Coco, and you did a beautiful job explaining all the decisions you made!
its satisfying when she paints with white the egde of the eye
Just gonna say that this isn't a sugar skull, this is a catrina. Lots of people confuse them for some reason, but they are *not* the same thing. Also, not spanish, mexican.
Nivek Kevin. Fr
Nivek Kevin shut up
Jericho Espiritu you shut up
Nivek Kevin
I knkw your comment is old but Spanish is originating from Spain, Latin is Latin America, Mexican is not its own group it’s a subculture so yes she was wrong with saying Spanish but you are also wrong because it is Latin AND Mexican
Im a dude and ima follow this technique for day of the dead. Thanks Michelle
This is very gorgeous, Michelle is a inspiration to all of us fans
OMG It's so beautiful 😍

Edit: I apologize for this comment. You're right, your culture is not a costume. (this video isn't offensive to all Hispanics, though, as evident by the comment section.) I am so sorry for disrespecting your points, feelings, & opinions. I really do apologize.
México!!!
How beautiful, I love the way you are, your so truthful and respectful to the world.
Omg I can't find Maddie Ziegler's comment can someone plz tell me what it said or where it is?
Me encantó el maquillaje pero aquí en. México no se se le llama."la bella muerte" si no la "catrina" pero igual me encantó
You did such a wonderful job, makes my culture look beautiful.
Doing a similar look for my school dance this coming Wednesday, so excited (can't wait to glue down my eyebrows!!)

Edit: I apologize for this comment.
+addy you obviously are offended right now..
yeah, i am. and?
Beautiful from what ethnic background are you from? Just curious. Thank you.
it's amazing how much of a difference those light blue lines made. As soon as she started adding them they made the eye sockets looks so much more hollow as if she were really a skeleton. :)
