You should create a medieval style beer helmet😅 make a big horn helmet like in Skyrim but then hang a pair of these off of the horns with a hose or some kind of spout that comes down like a beer helmet😂
"Each roll comes to about 15 bladders" made me think of the meme where "Americans will measure using anything but the Metric system" and I couldn't stop chuckling.
My grandfather used to make traditional bota bottles, and he always used the mouth of a wine bottle for the spout. Just break off the top and about two inches of the neck of the wine bottle, and even save the cork that goes with it. Bond it to your bladder with a food safe adhesive, and tighten it with waxed sinew to hold the seal. Done and done.
@@seigeengine If you cut it off with a very sharp knife like those fancy waiters then it is actually perfectly safe. The neck is generally the thickest and strongest part of the bottle.
This is Ian from Ronald Handmade... Very happy to see the marking knife getting used in the video, and thanks for the kind feedback! And yes - Not only did Maddie get sent one, the one you're using in the video was actually the one that's meant to be hers, so no pretending it didn't arrive now! 🤣🤣🤣
possibly crazy idea, but you could put a simple pocket on the outside of the leather portion to hold one of those reusable hand warmers - to keep your drink warm and liquid in the winter. Hot mulled cider to go!
You can make a leather treatment by melting your beeswax and add olive oil to it. Let it cool after it’s mixed and use it like a leather balm. I use it on all my leather. You never have to heat the balm to use it. Just rub it on/in with a dry rag and you’re ready to go.
Does the olive oil ever go bad or does the wax protect it from bacteria? I know beeswax and oil is the traditional leather balm but didn't know you could jus use olive oil.
I have used the same mixture do about 10 years and it’s still good. I didn’t really measure the amount of oil. I mixed some in, let it harden and test if it was the consistency I wanted. If I had to guess it would be about 4:1 wax and oil.
Considering my current workhorse is a hastily leather and fabric wrapped metal water bottle, I may have to give this a go before the next LARP/Faire season
That's exactly what I watch this channel for! I've larped for quite some time now and never found solution that good. All the vessels I ever had couldn't be used for anything else than for water or don't really look In Time or are super heavy and annoying to carry. I think the first alteration I would make would be different sizes. One smaller one, so you don't need to carry 1,5 kg around, a tiny little one for liqueur, a noble looking one for wine and so on.
The shoe tongue idea is pretty brilliant. I try to think ahead as these projects go and try to think of problems before they come up and I was stumped by how to have that shape of leather sewed together while still being able to turn it inside out after. Hearing the solution really clicked for me. Also, the speed and cheapness of this one really makes me want to see if I can't make some last minute Christmas gifts for the Renfest inclined. Definitely going to workshop some solutions to keep the mouth away from any of the noted hazards. Perhaps a removable mouth piece like musical instruments use. Pop it off, wash it, put it back.
I like this new segment with the chalkboard explaining the process of the project and the end goal in more detail, and also a tiny bit of information about where it comes from and links to traditional makers in the description!
If you extend the neck of the bladder a bit above the leather, you could add something to hide the milar and still be decorative. Wood, a 3d print of some kind, clay, and resin could all be an option for that. Just some sort of cool decorative ring right at the top to hide the fact it's a space age material.
I'd like to see a video that explores multiple ways of mounting/carrying this type of bottle. The strap is great, but sometimes you have Too Many Straps! What about a slide/swivel bracket, and a clip or hook style, for belt, thigh holster and/or backpack mounting? Another cool variation would be for a desert-themed adventurer, where it functions like a camelback, where its stored on the back, holds a lot more water, and has a drinking hose so you don't even have to take it off to drink from it.
I actually found a non traditional, but still older, bota in a thrift store a few years ago. 2 liters, perfect for anything ive needed lots of water for
One note with the copper is that if you do end up putting alcoholic or acidic beverages in the container such as wine, that can leach the metal out into the drink giving you copper poisoning which is in some cases fatal. This is the reason that copper Moscow Mule cups are now almost always lined with tin and or plastic
Fantastic! Hmm...ideas, huh? 🤔 How about a small pouch on the front? It could hold your fume thingy, or coin of the realm. If you're porting water. It could hold a vial of flavor drops. Heck, store salt. Just in case you're packing margaritas.
You have no idea how many times we would use a Bota bottle to smuggle wine and spirits into concerts. That's probably why I don't remember much of that AC/DC concert in the 80's.
I've seen a few in the SCA made using a 2-liter soda bottle and a cowboy boot. Basically, cut off the heel/bottom of the boot. Sew up the wide calf end, push in the bottle, sew up the top and bottom edge, and Glue the toe area around the top of the bottle. Some grommets and a good strap and you are good to go.
Love your waterskin! I ended up "making" myself a waterskin to go with a cosplay costume so I could carry water at a convention in-character. Not having leather or other tools, though, I ended up buying a collapsible water bottle for the bladder, then disassembling a faux leather purse I picked up at a thrift store to sew a bag to go around it. The water bottle had a silicone mouthpiece that kept it from spilling (you just had to suck on it to get the water out), so to disguise that when not in use, I got a wooden candle cup from the craft store, reamed it out a bit more with power tools to allow it to fit comfortably over the mouthpiece without scratching it, and then coated it with the same cutting board oil and wax we got for our wood cutting board and wooden fruit bowl. Then I connected it to the faux leather bag with some suede cord. The whole thing looks nice hanging from my belt when I'm in costume, and isn't too difficult to disassemble so I can clean the water bottle portion.
Great idea and nice design. Here's a thought on how to maybe make the spout a bit easier to deal with. You mentioned using some horn to make your spout with and that's actually a really good way to go. You could then leave a section of it showing and put in a carved wooden stopper or one of the non cork toppers for a wine bottle to seal it up. For the inside of the bag you can run the horn down a bit farther into the bag and then put a connector in the horn to attach to your mylar bag. To do this you would use a bit longer section of the tubing you were using so it could be pushed up onto the connector so you can keep the replaceable bag feature. There are lots of ways to seal horn so it's safe to drink from (look up some drinking horn vids for ideas).
My prayer for you is that your dream of doing this full time comes true ❤ You're miracle workers the way you get things done with limited time. Then hopefully there will be fewer haste makes waste moments where you realize you made more work for yourself because you were in a hurry - although you always seem to capitalize on every situation.
That's really cool about this whole plan too is that you can take your original leather water bottle the Castrol and make it with a mylar in the same setup you just did and don't have to go through the whole waterproofing of the leather and the coastal situation
One change you might want to consider is the position of the back loop for holding the water skin into position. In its current position it will eventually pull out of the leather from use. I would put it vertically on the end of the water skin so it isn't as easy for the weight of the water skin to pull the loop off.
Saw the thumbnail, thought it was a very fancy elven shoe or boot... with water pouring out of the toe. Ah, he's learned about doing an Australian "shoe-y"! 😅🤣
i'd love to see you and a couple other creators get some land and build a small town/village... just a couple buildings each that could be an area for people to come and larp... it'd be interesting to see how you guys make it look... could just be like 4-7 buildings... nothing to big or grand, just enough to give off a medieval fantasy and/or steampunk vibe...
I like the heat gun "oopsie" too! It adds a neat bit of antiquing! Funny enough, when you were talking about the spout, I thought "horn" before you even mentioned it! Horn was indeed a traditional medium for spouts and bungs. Another option is water-resistant woods - but beware of resins (which may be toxic or impart unwanted flavour, or expand when damp, and cause your cap to get stuck.
I've been really enjoying the videos of yours I've seen so far. You've got a lot of enthusiasm for what you're doing, and it comes through. I think one thing about the bladder is that you might not be using all the space inside the 'skin' part. You saw how the mylar crinkled up when you inflated it, and I think that's actually reducing your usable volume. It might be that making the mylar bladder a little larger than the shape of the skin, and allowing it to get a few of those folds and wrinkles into it would allow it to better conform to the interior of the leather and waste less space. That, or possibly cutting out and planning the stitch line of the leather first, then creating the mylar pattern based on that instead, including things like the horizontal thickening strip you added in.
I would use the clear tubing instead of copper for a longer spout. simply due to being cheaper than copper. but the thing that keeps it on theme. is I would put a nice etched wooden collar over the spout and top of the bag. antler would be better but antler can be harder to get. so a nice wood will do the job. make it feel like a real midevil hunter's skin.
I have been trying to figure out a way to make one of these for a while now. Thank you! I was gifted one similar to this design a few years ago that has a solid plastic bladder inside of it and is not very practical to carry around. This video has saved me from having to destroy that one to figure out how to make my own.
Great video, so going to start making these for our vending booth. I clicked on the link in the description for the mylar but it came up with the standard plastic bag sealers.
Love this one. It turned out incredible, and really looking forward to seeing how it holds up. I definitely wouldve burst that inner layer a few times, and my gosh that leather sewing machine looks more and more handy everytime I see it 😅. Also.. the blackboard set up looks awesome. 👌
The milar idea was pretty brilliant. I made one a few years ago and fought with bee's wax and a heat gun until i finally broke down and used pine pitch after id pretty much destroyed the project. It is functional though i rarely use it. Id make another one but i don't have a sowing machine and also hate hand stitching.
Just found your channel. I really enjoy hiking and wild camping. One this that would be super useful would be to know when you make something how heavy it is. Its a really important factor for someone like me considering whether I would actually use something like this.
When I was a young kid in scouts I was given one of those iconic bladder style water bottles with a rubber based inner bladder, I remember the water always taking bad, I think this could be a really good fix for that
Watching this, I think a strap or cord to retain the cork - You could just screw an eye hook into the cork and tie it to the strap rings, or even a tab on the leather. Easy enough, and you'll never loose the cork!
What about a 3d printed hard case you can clad in leather (even some furniture leather). Then leave a cavity inside so you can slot in a standard water bottle
It would be good to make a shoulder strap that is a bit wider with an offset padded section that helps to orient the bag and save your shoulder at the same time.
Makes me wonder if there is some sort of nesting spout...think the internal and external spout from a piping bag used in baking...surely thre are nesting metal versions...maybe for industrial use?
Nice bottle, very cool to carry on tour. Perhaps... is it possible to double the leather with some wool fabric to insulate the bladder?...🤔 Greetings from Germany 🌻

Something I would do would be to attach the cork to the bag with some kind of cord. That way if you take your water into battle (like you should) you won't loose your cork and be left the rest of the event with no seal for your water
Bone, horn, or wood would be cool for the spout. And letting it stick out a bit more from the leather avoids the whole poisoning yourself bit. Perhaps a small cup to go with the skin as well?
might experiment with the wine box bladder and see if it can be heat sealed in the same way. goon bags are cheep and each one has a prise inside (wine).
II've been scratching my head looking for a food safe inner bladder solution for years - so thanks! I Think I'll use a soda bottle for the spout though
I'd use an actual hard water bottle - one of the metal ones - that come with a lid and simply cover the bottle with the leather. Most of the work to make it hard enough to decorate is already done and it's also extremely hard to puncture. It's also meant to keep fluids cold. Alternatively, find a metal thermos and do it to that. It'd not just be LARP-useful but also useful in RL too... and unique.
Como mejora recomiendo colocarle, en vez de corcho, un pico para crear un chorro fino a presión para no tocar la bota con los labios... esto permite compartir la bota con otros...

That's brilliant. Also you get to drink wine and call it working on your project.
I'd prefer not to have glass in a water bottle if I can't see all of it to be certain it's not damaged, personally.

the beeswax would melt but if sealed with oil thatd be neat
The mylar of the bag would reflect most of the heat.
It is made out of the same material as those ultra thin emergency space blankets.

My thoughts exactly
Saw someone experience this at a larp. Electrolytes in an unlined copper cup led to a bad time. Thankfully they were ok.

drill a hole in the cork and put something through it with a lanyand attachment.
Wood stopper or taller cork and thread a keeper strap through it to prevent loosing the stopper.

Mold a horn stopper, but level it up by carving an intricate design into it

Its probably not a significant worry, but acidic drinks could leach copper from your spout. Just something to be mindful of. Great viedo either way.

I recommend the next one you use unicorn horn for the spout
Bone, horn, or wood would be cool for the spout. And letting it stick out a bit more from the leather avoids the whole poisoning yourself bit. Perhaps a small cup to go with the skin as well?
Stiffened leather and tethered? Maybe formed around a Dixie cup or something?

We need a new beach episode! Show us how to make the leather speedos from 300 Cl3ver!
It'd not just be LARP-useful but also useful in RL too... and unique.
Great looking waterskin!
I have a feeling we're going to see a fair few of these at Conquest. XD
Is your sweater made o wool? Where did you get it? I really like it.
Hi Kimberly! We have started listed the link to my sweaters in the description since so many people are interested 🤣
I have a souvenir Vino de bota from Spain as my water skin.
hmmm.. This goes with another idea I had, that you gave me from a previous video.
More on that later, when the time is right. 😀
I've been trying to figure out how to make a rum skin. Any advice,
Como mejora recomiendo colocarle, en vez de corcho, un pico para crear un chorro fino a presión para no tocar la bota con los labios... esto permite compartir la bota con otros...
