Ngl, The Lich was the first villain to give me a whole new perspective on villains.
Back then, I used to look at villains as people who are meant to lose, by losing their lives or by failing their plans.
But the Lich, however, was different. His plans usually went successful, and he almost reached to his goal many times, or even went to a situation where neither him nor Finn win.
I'm stoned so it may not be but this appears to be the most grammatically correct sentence I've seen in a comment in years
The original Lich technically won as after he made his wish the first universe had all life wiped out except for Bmo of course then Finns wish made farm world and Jake's wish made a new universe which we follow in the following episodes

I love that when asked about the Lich, Ron Perlman had no idea what fans were asking about hahahaha, he delivered one of the best characters ever and can't even remember playing him, he should voice more characters, imagine how good one could be if he seriously focused
Just because he doesn't remember the role doesn't mean he wasn't focused in the moment. Not that unusual for a professional actor
The litch total screen time is about 15 minutes i think? (before we saw him again meeting Golb)
I believe it is even more less in dialogue. So i can understand how it can be easy to forget he ever voiced litch. Did a great job ofcourse.

1: The Lich we see in Fionna and Cake might not be the OG because of how the face tear is on the opposite side
2: that all of the new blocks around Golb are liches from other universes or other scholars because in the episode "Come along with me" Gold has only a few blocks around its head
Yeah I think the second part is so true. Every scholar is a new door he can influence and send chaos through. I can’t believe this was a “kids” show ahaha. It literally starts off with nuclear wars an little kids getting turned into vampires aha. But I love how that dingus bullied sweet pea and got his mind melted for being a arse ahahaha.

I really enjoy characters that embody the concept of entropy. They're not really evil as much as they are machines serving a purpose, machines that you really can't beat, you can only stave off for as long as you can
So entropy describes the tendency for matter/energy to essentially reduce to a more likely state, however there's nothing in the laws of physics that prohibit the opposite
Not really that interesting. If you know the villain will win, what's the point, it's just as bad as a protagonist who always wins
The new universes lich lost but the green catalyst comet's just gonna make a new reincarnation so the lich still lost but what he embodies will still live on
im with you but no precisely with just entropy , in demon slayer for example , muzan kibutsuyi , the main villain of all the show, says he is like a natural disaster , something like a concept not a villain or a evil , just a bad happening

@@yasininn76 Just because he'll win in the end doesn't nessacarily mean there is no value in stopping him in the now.
Thats kinda how actual death is. We all die but we still try our best to preserve life and a good quality of life at that.
"In the beginning, before there was anything, there was nothing. And before there was nothing, there were monsters..." That speech from the lich is absolutely chilling. Perfectly written character IMO
Talk about an eldritch speech.
Finally a compilation that makes me understand the development of this character, thanks
We need a followup story about how sweet pea became the hero of Ooh. Growing as tall as a mountain, getting a massive beard, and inherited the hero sword.

I think Prismo owes Finn a wish maybe. Finn's wish was for the Lich to "never even ever exist" and then the Lich exists in that wish reality anyway, and then causes a million problems for a million realities. So not only did Prismo not even technically grant Finn's wish, but he also bungled up a bunch of other junk by not fully granting the wish. Yeah monkey's paw and all that, but a monkey's paw situation would make it so the Lich is essential for life to go on but now he's gone so everyone is doomed, not just get rid of him for a while and bring him back anyway.
(Edit: I don't think it's bad writing or anything, I know doing it this way was necessary for the amazing plotlines we got later. I just think it would be cool if adult Finn told Prismo something like "hey dude, you still owe me a wish, cuz I wished for the lich to "never even ever exist" and then he popped right back up." And then prismo gets all "sorry dude, my boss won't let me do any wish do-overs or I totally would" or something like that)
Finnwushed that the Lich never *existed* (past tense)
That doesn't mean that he can't come back INTO existence.
@@curtisleblanc5897 fair! Although it could be argued that "never even ever existed" could mean past tense from every point in time. I like to imagine that prismo attempted to grant Finn's wish by making the Lich never exist at any point but his powers couldn't do that fully because the Lich is essential for how that universe and others deriving from it work
@@Splonton That part is what they took into effect for the "Monkeys paw" effect wishes have with Prismo. The point was that he made a hasty wish for the Lich to never have existed, which allowed him to eventually exist due to lack of clarity.
@@Splonton
Yeah, I think Prismo would definitely want the Lich to never exist but he knew he could not do that because of the nature of his power and the universe, so he just did the best he could and the farmworld universe found a workaround.
it was just so petty of the universe to make Farmworld Finn the cause of the rebirth of the Lich though
Seeing what prismo gave to normal man and simon after wishing for their love to come back, i dont think he owes finn.

Golb seems to be Order as well as Chaos. Like a farmer who lets its crops grow, to harvest them later and he has "helpers" like the Lich
Organized chaos. A beautiful oxymoron indeed!
@@joshuacr i mean, if he only ate things and permanently deletes them, nothing would be left. I feel like he turned the Lich into a cube to use later, eons from then, as an agent of choas, but in order to grow the "good guys" who create more stuff in the name of defeating evil.
Like the whole fact there are diffrent universes based on if and when the Lich is introduced to that world, the Lich is a tool that spawns entire time lines, while he thinks hes destroying he probably creates more life indirectly in a way.
The only problem with the Lich is that he is such a well developed and fascinating character that the rest of the show's cast and stories feel like filler by comparison
"a good story is defined by how well the villain is written"
ice king was good finn and jake were okay vampire girl was good too
The Lich is one of if not the best villains in all of animation. He changed the course and feel of the show.
@@JaredHettler Hello. Good evening and night. My name is Brian López. What is your favorite episode of My Gym Partner's a Monkey? Please let me know in the comments down below.
It’s crazy the timing on this. Randomly at work looking for something to listen to while I stock find your specific adventure time timeline video got hooked on the lore and first thing I thought of was it’d be nice to see a video on the pitch specifically and now boom! I just got off work and now you drop this😂😂
And the weird thing is that The Lich is exactly the cliche JRPG villain type that people hate the most, the giant space flea from nowhere abstract embodiment of evil with no personal motivation or sympathetic qualities; just goes to show that what matters in a story isn't the elements that are in place but how they relate to each other and what they're there to accomplish
Jrpg my ass, Liches are old folklore
@yasininn76 You missed the point. Liches are old lore yes, but he's referring to Adventure Time's "The Lich".
The lich is literally the embodiment of a multidimensional, godlike being that serves as the most evil entity of all existence. I don't see why people would hate that, most people who encounter evil don't empathize with it, nor should you. So I think this is actually the best way to portray it: the entropy that exists to consume and taint, an unavoidable plague.
Past we mean Lavos from chrono trigger? I dunno about hated but the Lich does have a personality while Lavos was just a force of nature.
I can't wait to be a father and rewatch adventure time with my offsprings together to let learn later on when they're at perfect age about the value lesson of life. This cartoon thought me allot about facing the worst part in life during my teenage years.
Ice kings Gunther dream, with all the penguins horrified of him narrating the apocalypse was genuinely one of the wildest moments in the show to me.
I don't have the patience for the whole series but i kinda want to see this
The second to last episode showed the lich for like a minute and it made the episode 10x better
what a way to dive in the whole character and story telling i got a say ur one of a kind jartoon we don't see many chanels like you amazing video thanks
0:18 "Gosh, I wonder who that pixelated figure is."
there was one episode you skipped over. it's not super important to the story. but it involves a bear befriending Finn and Jake who then is given the enchiridian by Finn, who in turn gives the enchiridian to the snail
I always felt it wasn’t the sweater and love that saved Finn during their first fight after seeing Finn’s reincarnations as one of the catalyst comets of pure good it makes more sense that his past had something to do with it. Like two batteries that have the same charge.
After we saw the death of Jake and Finn having to meet him eventually to reincarnate in the next life, I always felt that Finn was the catalyst of friendship while Bonnie could technically represent the embodiment of love, especially with Marceline. That doesn't mean it's always positive and works, but it is always there to support for them both. Bonnie and Marceline. (Then again, this is my opinion. It is not necessarily show Canon for either show.)
It's a nice sum-up. I watched all those episodes, but Lich stuff was so far apart half the time I didn't remember a key detail of what was happening.
There are 4 seasons: Spring, Summer, Winter and 0:41
I love how they turned an Easter egg into a MASSIVE piece of the story
If DMT was a cartoon.
nice work keep it on! also for the next video i have a suggestion make a video about star vs forces of evil story
The lore of this cartoon is insanely good man
Literally ice king's past made my tears go down.
Love how much conflict they managed to squeeze out of this stereotypical, simplistic skeleton villain. His motives are straight foward, his methods simple, his entire decision making tree is a literal line with 2 nodes... "If alive, then kill", so he's linear... Yet they can't quite deal with him for good every time.
Truly a lesson in writing and designing.
Was it necessary to make a supposed children's cartoon this deep and disturbing?
Something I've frequently discussed with other friends who write is how ironically boring overcomplicated villains are. It's one of those things where once everyone started doing it, it tanked in value so much because everyone sort of forgot what an antagonist is supposed to do in a story. So many "villains" never challenge the protagonist because the conclusion is the same every time, hero realizes "wow, we're not so different" and then they either reconcile or one of em dies because "I can't forgive myself, im too far gone, rahhhh!!!". Love to see more recent stories return to straightforward evil guys.
Problem is, humans aren't evil. Animals aren't evil. Only actually magic creatures are able to be fully evil. The lich itself is a representation of pure evil, but with a human that wouldn't work, because humans only are evil when they have trauma and anger, and both of those can be talked through, quite easily too if it's the right person. So basically you'd need a purely magic creature everytime to have one of those villains, and while yes it does work, using the same trope always is exactly what started this wave of "understandable" villains.
@@BadmanpuntbaxterI think it was because too many over complicated villains weren’t written to overly complicated people, just an overly convoluted “philosophical” basis behind generally mundane motivations.
Instead of a highly complex person with deep rich ideas of morality and a strange relationship with the idea of taking lives, someone who’s good and bad in ways that let us see ourselves in them, and to understand why they think their philosophy makes sense, even if it really doesn’t, we get
“I want power for X reason, this is how far I’m willing to now let’s debate the philosophy of killing your enemy for 30 mins instead of fighting”
Which can easily turn the other way when used as a narrative foil. So you get some “hero” who’s supposed to fight for justice and for good genuinely entertaining the idea that killing a person who’s orchestrated suffering on a scale most can’t even fathom would make him the SAME as them. They spend more time rationalizing evil than seeking its end.
Overly complex villains tend to still be fan favs when done well and when done in a way that reflects well on the story they exist in. They can still be a fav even when the fanbase still overwhelmingly sees another antagonist as the main op- even against simple villains
Take the anime jujutsu kaisen for example. The main bad guy is Sukuna and he can be summed up as “he does what he wants bc no one can stop him, and he cares for nothing but himself” but even with that almost non existent reason to be evil he still has a complex philosophy it’s just deranged to normal people.
Then there’s the overly complex kenjaku. He spent 1000 years preparing a ritual that is basically a mix of the eclipse and the rumbling with jjks power system, going so far as to find the reincarnated soul of Sukunas twin, take over the body of that guys wife, take backshots in that body; and pop out the main character quite literally just so Sukuna has a peak vessel when shit pops off.
He’s like it aizen was even more ambiguous and “huhhh??” But unlike aizen, kenjakus motivation isn’t anything grand or even that… compelling.
He’s willing to turn the world into something no one can predict and spent so long prepping and doing morally bankrupt things to get there, and you know why he’s doing it?
He’s bored. He wanted to see what would happen.
Like you don’t need to have philosophy rap battles as part of the conflict to have villains and heroes that can represent complex ideologies and still behave in ways that aren’t just “I think genocide is good so here’s my “weak deserve to suffer” speech”” vs a “noooo life is precious even YOURRRS” ass hero.

Adventure time lore is crazy
I've never, in my life, seen a story that can so easily be described as "a nonsensical mess of retcons" as this. And I've seen Star Wars!
You did a great job
I'm calling it now, CHOOSE GOOSE is getting groomed into a MAJOR villain 😬😬😬😬
Technically didn't he cease to exist after he was used as a battery in that Fiona and Cake episode? (It's so confusing then again cuz they keep retconning characters so maybe not.)
@joshuacr it's cuz I kept seeing different versions of his either being bad or something motivating him to be bad(can't remember it's been a while)
14:54 Creepypasta appreciators remember this.
I've been thinking for a few days on how The Lich could return too Ooo, and then it clicked in my head; because Farmworld Lich's right hand was scattered across every universe in the Adventure Time multiverse, than that means there's at least one of those hands roaming Hunson Abadeer's realm, and if that hand can attach itself to any powerful demon down there, Hunson is not only kicked off of his throne but The Lich now has his very own realm to command in the extermination of all life. Or maybe that hand decides to torcher life itself with its new found hatred for life and intense anger, maybe the two entities will co-exists with each other; who knows what'll happen if that hand reaches Hunson's realm.
I've always had people disagree with me when I've said this before but I feel after Jake's wish he got put into his own wish altered and that being the one the show follows after that point
first point to this is that other's wishes caused them to get their own wish altered reality such as Wyatt or more notably the Lich
second point the original Lich and Finn are in their respective wish altered realities (confirmed by Fiona and Cake)
the only point contrary to this I could think of would be that since Prismo really liked Jake he would make his wish take precedence over the actual world he was in instead of creating a new one
BUT you can debunk that point by looking at the Lich and Finn in their realities still
if the Lich's wish was actually changed the Lich's world wouldn't exist because he would have never made the wish
and Finn's wouldn't have as well because the Lich made his wish before Finn's
BUT THEN you could go even further and say wouldn't it actually be Jake's wish altered reality's Lich's wish (the wish made by the Lich of Jake's wish altered reality)
which I'm not too sure there how deep it would go but definitely something to think about
2 mimeutes ago is insane this is the earliest I've ever been lmaooo

The fact that this happened just because of a snail is crazy asf

Adventure time should be considered one of the best animated shows of all time. Up there with jujutsu Kisen(if you haven’t watched it, you won’t be disappointed)
