  • Is the Russian Blue or Chartreux the Right Breed for you?
The Russian Blue is a cat breed that comes in colors varying from a bar of light shimmering silver to a darker, slate grey. Some can almost look blue, like Zeus. They develop close bonds with their owners and are sought out as pets due to their personalities, beauty, and coat. It is their short, dense coat which has been the hallmark of the Russian breed for more than a century.
The Chartreux is a rare breed of domestic cat from France and is recognized by several registries around the world. It is not currently recognized by the GCCF in the UK, ostensibly for being too similar to the British Shorthair and Russian Blue one of whose colors is a similar blue-grey.

None of our Russian Blues are shy, they are extremely bossy, smart, social and talk a lot. They are like dogs and will follow you everywhere. Awesome cats.

A question to Rolf. My neighbor's Russian Blue has adopted me. If he sees me going for a walk, he tags along; I mean will stay with me for an hour and even go down to the beach with me (I live near the beach). I worry about cars, but he stays pretty close. Maybe I should get some sort of harness, but he's a big tough cat with really BIG teeth. (He likes to bite me now and then ... the little bastard!) We get along well because I just let him do whatever he wants. (He's cleared the neighborhood of mice and sometimes brings me a dead mouse "gift" ... ugh!)

I swear my cat is either a mix between these two. But he looks more like a chartreux. But I have no clue. I rescued him. He was only about 3 weeks old when I found him in a garbage bag in a dumpster. I've had him for 4 years now. He's my baby. I wish I could post a picture.

You lucked out. The Chartreux is a rare breed that could set you back a fair bit. It’s possible your cat is a British Shorthair, which is another gorgeous breed, or a Chartreux, Russian Blue or British Shorthair with a splash of something different, that made it useless to a breeder in it for the cash despite what a wonderful cat your baby is. Glad he found a good home!

You missed the two primary physical differences between the two; eye color, Russian Blues have green eyes, Chartreuxs have amber, golden, yellow or orange eyes. Body shape; Russian Blues are thin and petite, Chartreuxs are thick and stocky. It's possible to have a mix. What they are more of depends upon eye color. The blue hair breeds are also known as hypoallergenic as they're known to not shed nor have dander.
    .
Thumbs down because you don't know crap. Blue coat breeds; Chartreuxs, Korats and Russian Blues require very little, if any grooming because they don't shed their fur like other breeds nor have dander. The only time I had to do any grooming on my Chartreuxs was because they got too thick to self groom their entire body and they ended up getting mats on their lower back.
    .
Blue coat breeds don't cough up hairballs for a reason.

You are 100pc correct, we had a Russian blue and now have a Chartreux... They don't need any regular grooming, never shed their coat, i just groom our Chartreux because he likes it, never any fur on the comb! I don't know how people can mix them up they are different cats! Our Russian blue never miaowed she chirped... Our Chartreux miaows sometimes. They are both adorable and very friendly breeds.

@@user-uc3ld1zj3g My Chartreux didn't need grooming until he got too damned big to groom himself. He was 24 ½ lbs at his last vet visit before I had to give him up to a no kill shelter late summer 2012. I'm no longer at the point to where I can take care of pets health wise as a complication of major spine surgery. I suspect that he was part of the reason for my spine giving out on me given how huge he was from picking him up. He was an attention whore. He enjoyed going to the vet because he had new people to harass for attention.

Question : Does anyone else have to be in the same room with your cat for them to go? Like I said she is a rescue, so I am not sure about her past... she is about 3 to 4. But she will yell at me until i am in the room then she will go..She has other quirks and thats why she is awesome. Best cat in the world!

The Beanie Boo Crew~Most likely he's crossed with a Russian Blue or a British Short haired since the Chartreux are more rare. The Russian blue has thick silky fur that can be any shade from silver to grey to almost black. The fur separates in what they call 'breaks', like in steps. Russian blues all have green eyes. I hope this helps. My cat is also a rescued feral but I got her at 6 years old. She's almost 9 now.

Does anyone even know about the AMAZING #KoratCat ? Nobody has them in comparo-lists, so I'm just wondering. I'm a cat breed geek, been a Cat Fancy subscriber since 7 (I'm older than 40 now, it still comes monthly!). I had never heard of Korats until I was about 8, and they were the featured breed that month. From that moment, it became my goal to someday get a #Korat. I did in 2006, and she was very unique in that her breeder became ill and nearly none of her cats born after the year of 2002 were socialized at all. I thank Judy and Dennis Ganoe of #GentlegiftKorats who stepped in to rescue all of the #Korats, and many Korat breeders from the area (and also quite far away, my dream girl came from Northwest Ontario, when the Ganoe's cattery is in the Northwestern region of the USA). She didn't allow anyone to touch her, ever, but she was very social with other cats. I know I'm a cat person, but I was worried that I was getting in over my head. I secretly hoped that I’d meet this cat, and she'd fall in love with her new mommy, and we'd be together forever. My then-husband and I ended up going to Canada and went home the new parents of FOUR cats: one Korat and three Tonkinese (also an AWESOME breed!) They were all fixed, received their shots, and we spent a wonderful weekend together. But, my secret did come true: I had literally walked into my breeders' home, and they were giving us the tour of their cattery, when we went into the "Korat's room;" they weren't limited to that room, but they just hung out in there. I spied an adorable little one cowering in a corner, and I smiled and cooed some little nothing to her, and gently picked her up, and we both nuzzled each other, despite the fact that I was still quite cold from the northwestern Ontario's December weather. She was purring. I looked at my adopted "mum" and her husband - the owners of the cattery - looked aghast, stunned, and very happy, all at the same time. This was Mee Mee, the cat who had never been held, loved, socialized in any way until I walked up to her calmly and picked her up (holding her as cats should always be: securely so that they don't feel that you'll drop them in a flash, but against your body, with their rear legs perched on your lower arm, and their top legs - hands, I say, I'm a crazy cat lady, though - on your shoulder, or your forearm, they'll develop a comfy spot on you, no matter how you're positioned). I almost was in tears when I was informed the name of the cat that I was holding. In fact, she and Boofy (the other female who came with us; the other two were boys and unneutered, and they had to stay in separate rooms from females and most other males, especially whole females and males, unless they've been shown to get along well in the case of the males. Mee Mee and Boofy lived with me for the rest of their lives; Mee Mee, unfortunately, lived to be only eight due to the lack of veterinary care for the first years of her life prior to her life with the Ganoes and in Canada. She was a unique case, and was very suspicious of other people until she'd had a chance to see that they were good to me, like my mom. She didn't get along with men at all, except for her Canadian savior, and she would sit beside him in my home, which was surprising as she'd been afraid of him when I left for home without her at the end of the weekend. I was afraid she'd forget me, but when she came to her forever home, she remembered her new mommy immediately, and slept curled in my right armpit every night for the rest of my life. Korats are very loyal, and my current two are two boys, sole littermates, and I consider them my children. I love to travel the country when I have time to cat shows because they're always the only Korats in the show, so they're always "Best of breed" and "Second best of breed" and they're almost even now, almost ready to grand! If you have questions, comment to me and I'll do my best to answer them for you. I've never paid for ANY of my Korats, as I'm known by many for turning Mee Mee around, and as a result, a famous (and very well known breeder - in EUROPE!) contacted me via email, asking if I was interested in my boys. I told her that I was beyond honored that she'd consider me worthy of one, much less TWO adorable Korats, but I was in engineering school (read: poor!) and I had no money to eat after feeding my pets and sometimes myself that I couldn't possibly afford two of her amazing, award-winning Korats. She said not to worry, she just wanted lots of pictures. I was stunned, and she arranged the trans-Atlantic flights of two kittens (~5-6 months now), pet passports, their neutering and vaccinations, and finding two trustworthy breeders who lived near her who were coming to the USA to an airport somewhere within a few states of me. I finally met this wonderful woman last summer, and I'm honored to say I know her and can call her a friend. She's been breeding Korats since the 1990s, and at the show that she attended with my husband and I during the summer of 2018, the judge, who was unaware at the time that their breeder was sitting in the audience watching (quite proudly, I'm sure), went into a longish discussion as to why "European Korats are typically closer to the breed standard than American Korats." Mee Mee was very close to the standard as well, but my cats are very outgoing - okay, they "sang" most of the way to and from the ROAD TRIP between Louisiana and VIRGINIA! Mee Mee would have been terrified, and I was just overjoyed to have my loving Korat that I just wanted her happy, and I truly think she was for the rest of her life. It takes a special, attentive person to be owned by a Korat, and Mee Mee chose me. Spirit chose me; Candy chose my husband. They both sleep between my legs, sometimes under the covers, sometimes on top, sometimes Candy under, Spirit right on top, as if he's "telling" Candy that he's in his spot. They almost immediately remembered each other despite being nearly half a world apart for a month, which was a large part of their lives then! I took a video to share with everyone involved in their transport as well as, of course, their breeder, and it was so cute. They both slept with me, together that… morning. Baton Rouge to San Antonio and back in a day doesn't allow much time for sleep! And when a Korat wants to get up, you'll soon find out. A toy will hit you. The cat door (a must in a Korat home; to a Korat - a trait inherited from their father - a door is not closed unless it's locked. With a key. I'm almost not exaggerating, so it's better to destroy the wood door, or they will if they think something is more interesting in a different room than sleeping with mom and dad. Get the BEST child proofing locks; do NOT go cheap here or you'll be buying the cheap ones AND the expensive ones. Magnetic key, hidden as high up as possible or on a chain around your neck/wrist.) But their love and loyalty, plus the ability to educate people who've never heard of the breed at cat shows is a lot of fun and rewarding! Come see us in Gonzales, LA, USA, on 30 March, 2019; we'll be there and we'd love competition. They've never, EVER had it.

    Most chartreux have yellow eyes....
But mine chartreux eyes are pastel green

If have green eyes is not pure Chartreux it's a crossbreed. Chartreux cats have golden/amber eyes not most but all Chartreux cats have golden eyes. If has green eyes is not Chartreux.
