I love that old wrecker. The story behind it makes it worth saving. Let alone the great condition it is in. The first truck I drove was a 1968 GMC. 327 with three on the tree. I was eight years old. I would go nuts in those desert salvage yards. The 57 convertible is awesome as well. Who doesnt love a black 57?
HUGE Convertible top hydraulic tip... inverted flare unions and plugs.. you need at least 3 unions and 6 plugs. when pulling each line off the pump.. put a plug in the side of the pump.. put a union on the hose with a plug in it. when you take off the other hose from the pump.. take the plug out of the union and put it in the other side of the pump. put the open hose into the union on the other disconnected hose.. now you pump is sealed.. so it does not drain all over the trunk. the hoses are sealed.. so they don't drain and guess what.. in this configuration you can manually operate the top as the fluid is free to flow as the pump is not locking the circuit.. pulling the cylinders do the same thing..
Steve, So glad to see the "57" run....can hardly wait till you have given it the "Welderup" treatment. Wish we had the space and time for me to tell you about the "55" 210 that I bought from my childhood. My first cousin owned it till I was able to talk him out of it just recently and Our Son and I went completely through it and gave it to my Wife for our Anniversary. It's now complete with a real un molested 427 BB out of a Super Sport, Muncie M-22 4speed with a original brand new old stock Mr.Gasket Vertical Gate Shifter (that I got from a buddy that had till now never been mounted on a Transmission) a re-built Aftermarket Complete Moser 12 bolt. We re built everything that needed it and upgraded to 4wheel disc brakes new custom wheels and Mickey Thompson Rubber that fit inside the fenderwells (we had to do a mini tub job on the floor to accommodate the 33 inch wide rear tires but it needed rusty panels removed anyhow so that worked out good) Anyway long story short it's now her summer nice weather driving car that she drives back and forth to work....you should see the looks she gets driving that car....most I know expect a guy behind the wheel and she is constantly getting challenged by kids in new Mustangs or Challenger's to race but all she has to do is nail the throttle and shift gears and they leave her alone REAL QUICK.....LOL. Stay Safe Buddy and we will keep watching what your building.
Steve is the man he has the best imagination that he clearly can build anything I so want him to pimp out my 02 Mack Vision but unfortunately I could never afford this fine man's work. Love ya Steve your truly my hero 4ife
We had no traffic here for like 3 months it’s still pretty light. I have a terminator cobra that I wish drove more. I’ve been driving it more in the last 3 months then I have in the last 5 years so awesome to get it out on the highway and let her rip
Best feeling ever when u get the old beasts running after years of rest ,wicked sh#t mate lookin forward to the build its guna be sweet goodonya boys cheers
@Jon Smith I appreciate the offer and it sounds like a nice ride...but I'm currently in the middle of building a 70 K/20. Just picked up my LS donor truck for it yesterday.
I have driven several trucks home with no brakes. I drove my grandpa's '69 c-10 from Arkansas home to Kansas. He said it would never make it to Kansas. We threw a case of oil in the bed & took off. Those old chevy's are tough. Lost my grandpa's 69 in my divorce but still have the ex's grandpa's 68 GMC. He bought it new & I have the protect a plate with the truck. It is not only a big block with all the options but also has a factory posi. Thanks for reminding me of some good memories while you relive yours.
New subscriber! I am not a rat rod guy but I respect the creativity and skills involved! Steve Darnell is a good dude! Classic car and truck revivals are cool! This would be a great compliment to the Vegas rat rod show!
Love the intro.... looks like it worked lights are back on in Vegas! ♥️🤍💙Hopefully you will be able to do your tours again soon. Love the Chevy... so cool!
Well that look like a fun road trip I used to love driving out west drove over the road for 21 years and that's why I love that green Peterbilt you're so much
🤘🏼🏁watching from Indiana gonna come see the shop when the corona bs is over with my buddy just moved to Vegas an iam a welder an fan of y’all wanna build a 4bt pickup like you did the 30/31
Steve, that old wrecker is badass! Seeing the '57 running and moving under it's own power was just as badass!!! As far as I know today, the wife and I will be at the next Viva! She does pinup, and Vegas is the pinnacle for her. If at all possible, whike we're there, I'd really like to come to Welder up to see them in person. If I could set it up, how would it be to have a few pinup models to take pictures with some of your builds?! Either way, I need to get some Welder up swag, and no better place than from your shop!!! Can't wait to see more of the wrecker and the '57!!!
Awesome. That GMC would be a bitchin project. Hope I did the right thing when I saw you Steve at the Terribles in Jean. Said hey from a distance and left you alone. Not just because of the virus crap, but just because I thought it was right. Cool to see ya. Hope to make it out to Vegas and see the shop.
Super cool. Doing a 67 C10 the same way right now myself. Got the old 283 running so it would move under its own power. Now working on brakes and suspension. Will drive it rusty and crusty before it gets any body work and paint.
Love the video just amazed that you find all the good stuff and work hard on the engines to get them up and running so gutted a won't be visiting welder up this year but roll on 2021 and the ship will be my first stop 🤗🏴😍 xx. Keep the video coming living them all ❤️
Im surprise that with you on board you didnt bring. Hoses belts and at least 2 tires and a box of oil and trans juice lol but I love it but shit I was just getting in to and look at the time and the dam show is over not fair bro
I bought a 55 (1st series) Chev truck a few years back- a reaal basket case. Reluctantly sold to a friend last year, Now I'm buyin' it back. Putting a 283 in it, planning on a semi- ratrod look (regulations up here in New Brunswick are pretty strict). Named it Project Hemmroid. Hope you don't mind...
Bad ass I used to have an old chevy wrecker like that with 460 holmes twin boom. Love old vehicles. Have a 55 3600, 69 elcamino, 78 corvette. And more. Lol.
I saw this adventure on your IG story and couldn’t for the life of me figure out why you’d go through all of that to save that truck. Why not just pull it up onto the swamp thing and bring it home. But now I understand. 4 wheel drive, manual. Pulled everybody and their momma out of a ditch at some point. Yeah. It’s cool af.
Seeing these old Chevy's reminded me Steve, Have you ever went back to try yo buy the white 67 Chevy pickup with the Pontiac engine that was at the other yard where you dumped those junk trucks off? That thing just oozed coolness! Hope you get this truck too!
Awsome tow truck , and congrats on getting the 57 running . Both kick ass vehicles from the past that need to b reunited with the road. But , the question of the day is did u pick up the GMC camper special ? I love that truck , wish I had a chance at that one .
