  • Today I brought you long with me to look for a new transmission for my flathead motor set up Rat Rod! I went over to my buddy Dave's junk yard to find something that will work. I am not 100% sure I got what I needed to get this Rat Rod running again but its a start in the right direction. Hopefully one of these work out and she is back on the road ASAP!
    Thanks for watching,
    Steve

Amazing how well stuff back then was built. 90 years old and you can throw it in and run it. They sure took pride in building stuff to last back then

Americans are fortunate enough to find old stuff like this and all sorts of superchargers in scrap yards. Here in Europe seeing any of these would be a rarity. Even trying to find a v8 or a v6 engine would be hard.

I had a 56 Chevy pickup with a three speed that popped out of third gear all the time so we shimmed the gears so it popped out of second instead because it only ran a short time in second and I could hold it in gear manually long enough to make it into third for effortless cruising.

I learned the hard way about the old ford transmissions too! I have a 51 Ford tudor sedan and and I was messing around and tried to do a hole shot with it and the car didn't move! It stripped the teeth clear off of first gear! Luckily one popped up on Face book marketplace and I was able to get it real cheap! I put the transmission in and I was good to go again and no more hole shots!

The way I look at it Rat Rods are to be seen and enjoyed with old scrap parts they are not really built for speed although some build them that way there is nothing like a old flat head or Y or W block even a old Poly or Hemi

There is no third "gear". The syncro hooks the input shaft to the output shaft in high. The other gears are along for the ride.

The T5 switch is a great one, only problem is you need to switch out the torque tube or build an adapter on the back end and shorten the torque tube. It’s doable but requires some machine work. Did it for my 1935 and 36 Fords.

It's good to see those honey holes for old flathead stuff there was a sweet yard with nothing but early 70's and older near my place and when the old guy died they took everything to the scrapyard and crushed all the cars it pissed me right off because that was my go to yard for older stuff and they had everything big blocks flatheads Y blocks old banjo rear ends everything you ever wanted. and it all went to get melted down.

I gave up on early ford transmissions about 50 years ago. We could change one 2 guys working in about an hour.
If you have to run them learn how to rebuild them and save the bad ones for parts. A 40-48 synchronizer is a good improvement.

I know that spiral geared transmission was a close to the synchromesh transmission was easier to get in and out and that ford seemed to like to change to different ratio in there for quicker picking up speed in traffic. The cluster wouldn't interchange cause of different tooth counts ... Then the real old ones were straight cut on all the gears. Lots a people trading out those for the little ranger five speed. I liked not having to pull the rear end and wheel it back

I broke the spider gear in my 50 ford, it had an "overdrive" manual trans, ( KILLER on the highway ) there's a company in Seattle that has these gears NOS ! ON THE SHELF ! They aren't that hard to replace, I know it's cool to find this stuff in someone's back yard but I would have fixed the one in the car with brand new gears ... still cool to watch though
