- Today I brought you long with me to look for a new transmission for my flathead motor set up Rat Rod! I went over to my buddy Dave's junk yard to find something that will work. I am not 100% sure I got what I needed to get this Rat Rod running again but its a start in the right direction. Hopefully one of these work out and she is back on the road ASAP!
Thanks for watching,
Steve

A bad day at the junk Yard is better than a good day at work
Amazing how well stuff back then was built. 90 years old and you can throw it in and run it. They sure took pride in building stuff to last back then
Automotive archaeologist. Uh-Hugh That hidden desert horders' stash you took us to was educational and epic.
Love seeing how these old girls are put together! Thanks brother.
Americans are fortunate enough to find old stuff like this and all sorts of superchargers in scrap yards. Here in Europe seeing any of these would be a rarity. Even trying to find a v8 or a v6 engine would be hard.
"Uncle Dave's "yard has that WOW factor! Just looking at all the diamonds that were in the background made me want to scream!
let's all ignore the vette in the background
Man I’d love to roam around that junkyard of gems , so cool to see so many old pick ups , the old Vette etc . Good luck on the rebuild .
Thanks for the information love the old stuff they last forever.
Looks like a great find. Wish we had a place like that around here in my area. Keep up the videos Steve, I keep picking up pointers from you in these videos.
Thank you again for sharing your knowledge on the transmission on your 32 Ford I thought that was very educational thank you
Steve please do more of these informative vids. Thanks from the great white north.
I had a 56 Chevy pickup with a three speed that popped out of third gear all the time so we shimmed the gears so it popped out of second instead because it only ran a short time in second and I could hold it in gear manually long enough to make it into third for effortless cruising.
Thanks, I'm looking forward to Thursday!
I love things brought back to life! Thanks for the video!
Love those Corvette in the back ground I been show on TV for many years God bless sir
I learned the hard way about the old ford transmissions too! I have a 51 Ford tudor sedan and and I was messing around and tried to do a hole shot with it and the car didn't move! It stripped the teeth clear off of first gear! Luckily one popped up on Face book marketplace and I was able to get it real cheap! I put the transmission in and I was good to go again and no more hole shots!
Very cool steve that's a good job taking all to build one good transmission
Awesome - waiting for the follow up!
LaSalle transmission brother. Keepin it TRADITIONAL 🇺🇸💪
Nothing beats the old stuff Wishing you and your Family well Take Care Sir
Cool vid !! Awesome parts yard !!
Really enjoy your channel, especially when you feature the 32 coupe. I'm building a crusty original paint 32 roadster at the moment and enjoy watching for inspiration. Thank you!
So cool love old parts and old rat rods loving the videos and love rats rod just cruising may not be the fastest but still moves well
The way I look at it Rat Rods are to be seen and enjoyed with old scrap parts they are not really built for speed although some build them that way there is nothing like a old flat head or Y or W block even a old Poly or Hemi
This was very cool to see the inner workings
Wish you a lot of luck with those transmissions my Friend 🏁✌🏿✊🏽🏴☠️
There is no third "gear". The syncro hooks the input shaft to the output shaft in high. The other gears are along for the ride.
Always interesting. Wish it was a longer video
I’m I love with that Caprice in the background
I miss watching you and the team at welderup !
Oh crud look at that 57 cameo cab, WOW!!!!! I'll bet he wants high scrap for that. Blew my mind. Jim BCC AZ
One of those transmissions is out of a truck with lower gearing. I went through a few transmissions before I stalled the truck transmission no problem after that.
Thanks for sharing don't forget to do some back road races
Hello from the UK. Great video fella
Lots of goodies in thst yard.... man oh man...
The T5 switch is a great one, only problem is you need to switch out the torque tube or build an adapter on the back end and shorten the torque tube. It’s doable but requires some machine work. Did it for my 1935 and 36 Fords.
Keep up the great videos my friend .
Looks like a fun place to check out..might need a lunch while walking around there.
I have one out of a 48 ford f3 probably a lot harder to break but you'd have to get the open drive kit for the rear
I don't go to theme parks, I rather pay admission to walk around a old junk yard checking out all the cool shit.
Gold indeed!
Great vids keep em coming ...living in corona ville🤣
I like that 59 El Camino @12:10 then the other one towards the end is cool to.
I want that c1 in the background
It's nice working with parts that were made in USA.👍
Awesome 👍🏾 man he's got great project car's lying around I'd be trying to put them all on the road again, if I was rich😏 👍🏾👍🏾💪
60 + years ago i had a 47 merc with the flathead from a 48 police car. I broke several transmissions . Finally got a top loader from a truck . that lasted til i joined the Air Force . My brother junked the car while i was gone .
Cool stuff. Steve is the man.... I have all the shows recorded on my tv
Thanks Frank!
You are the best. Bro
O K👍 Looking forward to the next video ✌️ be safe 🐛
I have one of those transmissions running available here in SoCal
It's good to see those honey holes for old flathead stuff there was a sweet yard with nothing but early 70's and older near my place and when the old guy died they took everything to the scrapyard and crushed all the cars it pissed me right off because that was my go to yard for older stuff and they had everything big blocks flatheads Y blocks old banjo rear ends everything you ever wanted. and it all went to get melted down.
Good video.
I gave up on early ford transmissions about 50 years ago. We could change one 2 guys working in about an hour.
If you have to run them learn how to rebuild them and save the bad ones for parts. A 40-48 synchronizer is a good improvement.
Keep safe from Sydney Australia
Love your vids bud
I know that spiral geared transmission was a close to the synchromesh transmission was easier to get in and out and that ford seemed to like to change to different ratio in there for quicker picking up speed in traffic. The cluster wouldn't interchange cause of different tooth counts ... Then the real old ones were straight cut on all the gears. Lots a people trading out those for the little ranger five speed. I liked not having to pull the rear end and wheel it back
That scrap yard had some bad ass stuff layin around.
Namely that Vette!!!!!!
Keep Rocking!!!
Haha...."about a year" is hoarder talk for between 15 to 20 yrs, so in that region it's 'about a year' lol.
If anyone could do it you can the man that makes shit happen. Steve Darnell
I broke the spider gear in my 50 ford, it had an "overdrive" manual trans, ( KILLER on the highway ) there's a company in Seattle that has these gears NOS ! ON THE SHELF ! They aren't that hard to replace, I know it's cool to find this stuff in someone's back yard but I would have fixed the one in the car with brand new gears ... still cool to watch though
Damn ...wish junkyards looked like that around here there be ratrods all over the place we have to scrape and find parts only thing in junk yards around here is junk
You want to find a 1939 ford trans, You can look up why. Sure wish we had your weather here in Ohio. Stay safe and practice your distancing.
For some reason we used gears from 49 to 51 Mercurys. Don't remember why, but I did it in my 39 Ford, with 283 Chevy.
Speedway motors has a adapter plate for the Flathead and a T5 trans.
i want that red corvette in the background at Dave's place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love it man you're a jack-of-all-trades bro that's for sure love your channel manI just subscribe I thought I was already a subscriber I feel bad I've done watch tons of your videos always a big thumbs up bro can't wait to see this bad boy back out rocking and rolling 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👊🏼👊🏼
Cracking video yet again, I need another visit to Las Vegas so I have a excuse to come to the workshop & buy another hoodie , bit of a mission from the UK
Yes it is a long way. We really appreciate you coming. My visit there was a great time. Beautiful!
Dam I really like your big black Dodge Cummins you should have it on the channel more often
Check out Steve's walk around on his Dodge, it's a hell of a truck! Cheers Aaron.
That place is awesome, we don't have this in Massachusetts, everything is rusted and crushed. That Vette behind you is killer!
R Swan where in MA are you? Cape cod here
Yeah im curious too. Im in franklin county Massachusetts. I know where there is a solid salvage yard 30mins from here that has some decent stuff from 1930 to the late 90s...and nothing gets crushed
Ryan Duarte dude tell me more ? Where is this
@@derekcorreia9692 bernardston ma. Theres a phone number. But not worth calling. The guy is waaaay better in person. If you watch junkyard gold, its season 1 episode 2 i believe, shows a brief overview
With limited power I would opt for the T-5 update. Easier on the motor at highway speeds and more usable power ranges.
Hey Steve, hope all is well.
Nice
I see your still shaking hand in Vegas 🤪
Lov the Vette in the background 👍
Take that silver eagle set wherever I go lol,
My Daddy said you'd drive me to drinking if you don't stop driving that hot rod Lincoln
Lol!
Thats wat was wrong with my transmission after i spent 1200 for new parts and now i got it fixed...lol wish u had this video 2 months ago ....lmao
5.65 pls do somthing with that corvette pls. I would really wanna see a rat road corvette.
Could be a Lincoln zephyr trans with the rubber mounting
Uhhh..I've built so many of those, I shivered when I saw it...Those are HORRIBLE transmission's..lol..I'd change it over to a "ROCK CRUSHER" and be done with it..🇺🇸
Wow so refreshing to hear a car guy say......well shit i have no idea....instead of making up some BS to get the sale
bet somebody wanted that sunbeam sitting back there..be cool if we could have a walk through video of Dave's yard...
my first car was a 1968 Sunbeam Alpine. great first car in high school and the best part was it had reclining bucket seats ;)
If that car and parts could talk.... the history they’d have
will you make a video on how to rebuild it? id greatly appreciate it
I need parts from the 55 truck!
I have a video explaining the different years of the early ford trans if anyone is interested
as 3rd generation working for my dad as he did years of knowledge is something that money can't buy 👍 truly blessed as i know that you say all the time you would not change anything if you could because you wouldn't be same man today 👍👍👍👌welderup hemroid😂 best show on TV glad to see more content and less tv control over whenever you want to say if you smash your thumb mutha fuc#er makes it hurt less 😂 family show more than people realize just how millions grew up learned from their Dad and thankful that i had tools not crayons as a kid because they are helluva lot more helpful making money can't wait to see next creation 🤔trax on something for the dunes ? 🙏🚀
He’s gunning chrome sockets😂😩
Love your channel and TV show. Your a true hot rodder ar heart and arent one of those glory hogs like Ass Monkey . Was gonna do a trip with my brother in May across the U.S and I wanted to swing by and check oit your shop and buy some stuff . But with the virus and shit going on it will have to wait till next year . Thanks for all the vids you do !
Yah! Come on by when you can!
What junkyard is that?
I just miss going outside 😢
6 minutes in Wow you can be a normal "except for being a rodder" human, watching your show I was wondering.
Funny... I love wrecking yards... can’t get me to go grocery shopping cuz it hurts too bad to walk around looking for food... but I’ll walk all day in a wrecking yard looking for cool shit! Lmao
Can't you cnc sum of those shafts maybe possible dude .💪👌👌💯
All it takes is money and time and if you ain't got no more money I ain't got no more time
Nice didn't know that trans was that close to me you still going to have your car show or is it cancelled
Everything has been canceled for now. Keep watching, we will post as soon as we know we are clear from the Virus.
What is that 59 chevy front end ? Impala?
Can’t you rebuild your old trans with cryogenic treated gears?
A true rat rod, not all these fakes with modern parts.
Hot rods are true. Rat rods are the fakes. 👍😉
I miss the t.v show..is there more comming out....or did you guys get the shit for the bong show...I saw it...thank God for UA-cam..I can still watch....now everyone going to be looking for the bong..its there.
For now we have gone to You Tube. It is far less stressful and a lot more fun to do. The You Tube gives a personal and close-up view of what we are doing. Thanks for watching.
