  • It's me birrrrrrthday and what better way to spend it than bikepacking with your friends around a beautiful part of the country. Also, it's been SEVEN years since I stopped drinking so wanted to talk about why I did - as I get asked regularly if I drink :) So enjoy!
Any questions leave them in the comments or if you just want to leave a nice message, I would love that too. Nice to be nice, eh! :) xx

One of my favourite Billy Connolly quotes ' I gave up drinking when it was still my decision'...
Great that you are so open about your decision.
There are lots of problems associated with alcohol in the UK- as well as obvious health issues. So no-one should feel compelled to drink by friends etc.
I made similar decision a number of years ago ...when alcohol was having an impact on relationships and self esteem.
There were a number of great years when I was younger fueled by drink...but it looses its joy as you get older , have more responsibility etc

Happy Birthday! I also quit drinking this year for all of the same reasons as you! I’ve never particularly liked the taste of alcohol, and I always drank because I felt like I had to not because I wanted to. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made and I feel so much better for it! Thank you for sharing this video 😇

New subscriber. Thanks for sharing your story. I thought I was the only one who woke up one day and said “I’m done drinking”. Like you I came to the conclusion that I didn’t need alcohol to be part of my life. I don’t miss the hangovers or hoping I didn’t say or do something stupid the night before. Thanks for your honesty - 5 years for me... P.S. Happy birthday!

    Happy Birthday, Katie,

Hope you have a fantastic day.

Only recently found your channel and enjoyed hearing your story about quitting the drink. I quit for similar reasons two years ago, I enjoyed my relationship to alcohol, no regrets - and am enjoying life even more without it. Kind of surprised me actually how much more going out with friends, playing music… is even BETTER. But my favorite thing about you on the show is your love of the bike. Thanks for sharing your vibe with us.

Happy Birthday, Katie. And thanks for all the great content. Your love of cycling is infectious. And thank you for talking about alcohol. I am 59 and have not had a drink in 17 years. Last year I rode up Stelvio and Mortirolo on the same day. If I had still been drinking I would not have that memory or the wonderful friendships with my bike crew. Keep on keeping on Katie!

Katie, I have watched many of your videos, (I'm now a subscriber) so please allow me to say how much I enjoy the content you present. You have been a great inspiration for me, having gotten back into cycling after a 40-year hiatus. But this video was so personal and heartfelt, it touched me and helped to make a decision I have been wrestling with for a few years now, to quit drinking. I drink infrequently, but like you, I'm an all or nothing kind of person, so your story really hit the mark for me. Thank you and I hope you continue your videos, as they make this upside-down world a bit easier to take.
    Cheers, Patrick

Patrick, so great to have you here and so glad my story can help you in some way. I never want to tell people what to do but can share what worked for me to being happier and healthier :) and if you want the odd drink no probs, but I just never really fancy it anymore. I love feeling fit and healthy and booze doesn’t fit into that anymore for me :) thanks for the support as always. And any questions or topics you want covering, just ask!! :)

Stopped years ago. Decided I was done with hangovers. Also no “big” reason, addiction, whatever. Just felt it was stupid and didn’t want it anymore. Will never take another sip. I wish more adults would try life without.
Can’t say I’ve ever heard of a person who regretted stopping.

I have ridden from Hanoi to Saigon, California to Georgia, Vermont to Georgia, done Paris - Brest - Paris, Manchester to The Lake District O/B, and thousands upon thousands of miles on organized rides and solo self-contained. None of that would have been possible if I hadn't stopped drinking 25 years ago. So, congratulations on your birthday and just not drinking for today. Cheers...

I’m not tea total but 20 years ago I mostly stopped frequenting bars and that adjustment put a big dent in my consumption. Totally agree that time spent perched on a bar stool and the recovery time that follows is a big waste of time. That said, whenever I get back to visit the UK (Midlands), I look forward to a proper pint eg Pedigree out pewter jug or perhaps drawn straight from the barrel at some of my favourite locals. Some of those pubs are as magical as the Peak! Keep well, stay safe and Hold Fast!

    Happy Birthday!
I feel sorry for those who think they need alcohol to have fun. There are so many things in Life that create the best memories and all alcohol does is blur those memories or give you a false version of them. I use to drink quite a bit when I was in the Army, but after two nights of literally drinking myself to oblivion, I decided no more. Now I might have a drink once a year for a special occasion and I limit it to two.
Just Enjoy Life and if Life isn't enjoyable, change the direction your life is headed.

Belated best wishes for your birthday, Katie! It was interesting to hear that you used to drink heavily (if that's the right word), because you are so clear-eyed now. I've never been a heavy drinker - with one exception. One night, when I shared a flat with a couple of blokes, I was home alone. I'd bought a flagon of Rose and I drank more than half of it, whilst watching TV. That was over a few hours, I think. I didn't feel as though I was drunk but one of the flatmates, when he saw me, said that I was. Didn't have a hangover, though - I've never had a hangover. A number of years after that, I started having a small glass of red wine with my evening meal but I stopped even that a couple of years ago. I don't miss it, really.

I don’t drink everyday but when I do it’ll be a couple of glasses of wine or a beer or something with a meal. I don’t personally see an issue with that. I used to drink a lot, going our on weekends and spending shit loads of money and waking up feeling shit. I ha ent done that in a very long time. I don’t think I’ll ever give up completely because I don’t see it as a problem if I don’t go OTT and feel shit about it the next few days after. Happy Birthday.

Good on you for quitting drinking and not caving to peer pressure. I quit drinking 25+ years ago during a 'terminal' bout of cancer. Prior to the cancer I drank like a complete lush, drank to falling down at parties, etc. Quit cold turkey. The first 2-3 years felt really weird, but I've never gone back and never will. Like you said, it just makes you feel like crap, and there are so many other things to do in the world. I feel much better on a daily basis too. Thanks for the great video and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! thanks for sharing this, people think if you've stopped drinking there must have been a life changing thing that happened but that's not always the case. more and more young people are deciding to just not drink similar to people not taking up smoking. researchers found that between 2005 and 2015: the numbers of people aged 16 to 24 who described themselves as non-drinkers rose from 18% to 29%. i gave up drinking 2 years ago, i also do things all out or nothing and moderation is not for me. I've 2 kids that were getting old enough to spot what a hangover was and they deserve the best from me, + as my priorities and lifestyle were changing giving up drinking were really easy for me, which is odd considering I loved it. (having not much of a social life helped!) sometime I wake up feeling great, sometimes not (my diet is still poor) but when I don't feel great in the morning at least there's no hangover to multiply it. when i first stopped it was like I was squeezing an extra day out of my weekend, instead of drinking to excess and not remember things, ill take in an evening movie, followed by not spending the following morning in bed. I get more out the holidays I go on. its sad to think back to previous holidays all that wasted time hungover and not getting the most from your time 😁 stay safe 🙏

Hi Katie! And Happy Birthday! My story with regard to not drinking is a little bit different to yours, in the sense that it was my health that rather 'forced the issue' as it were. In the early hours of the morning of 26th June 2018 I suffered a mild stroke. Prior to that I basically ate what I liked and drank what I liked in whatever quantities I liked! I was 20 stone, which for anyone is quite an unhealthy weight (unless you happen to be 9 feet tall!) But for someone who is a wheelchair user and only 5" 2 it's pretty disastrous! Anyway, to cut a long story short, I'm now on that many tablets for different things, all of which react very badly with alcohol, now I just don't bother. And to be honest, despite how much I used to love drinking I don't really miss it.
As for my weight, well it is coming off slowly, and recently I've managed to get back out on my handcycle again! I'm only doing about 8 miles a day, but I feel better than I've felt in over a decade!

Guys in my group drink more than me but are fit and lean compared to guys that drink but don't exercise. I've known a few people that are all or nothing with alcohol i feel its wise if you're at the extreme end to be cautious. It's tough in the UK because people meet in the pub its such a part of the culture. It can be expensive especially if you drink out.

Great insight on the drinking, Katie. I agree with you-there's nothing intrinsically wrong with drinking, but there's no benefit either. Its a bunch of empty calories which at best makes one lethargic and much less likely to do stuff like ride regularly. It can have long term health effects like liver problems. And it is SO easy for a huge percentage of indulgers to fall off the cliff into drunkenness and/or alcoholism which can either lead to a one time disaster behaviour or turn into a lifetime of spiraling down into the alcoholic wasteland.
Yep, a pint or two every now and then sounds great, but there is no real benefit to it and its fraught with peril.

Good to hear you quit drinking. I was never a big drinker or a social drinker. I drank wine with my dinner on my days off. When I retired, I began drinking wine every evening with my dinner, went from a glass, to half a bottle, then a full bottle. I guess I was happy to be retired. One evening when I took the garbage out, I noticed all these empty wine bottles in the garbage, I realized I was getting into a bad habit and I didn't want to be that guy, so I quit and I am feeling better when I did.

    Happy birthday Katie.
I had my last drink nearly 20 years ago. A lot of people struggle with that drug but white British culture was v pro drinking when I was younger.
    Not so much now.
The addictive personality will always struggle with alcohol.
Keep doing what you're doing Re your videos, they're great and refreshingly honest.

As a local, Par beach pretty much always, has a cold breeze blowing, also, when tides out, the sand goes on for miles, good place for doggy walking! Happy birthday btw!

I quit 30 years ago....haven't missed it for a minute. I agree with your reasons, and admire the fact you don't choose to be judgemental of those that do. Live and let live...extra points for living so fully on the bike !!!

30 years is awesome!!! Yeah if people want to drink go for it! I have family and friends that do and if that’s what they enjoy, go for it. I used to like it too so can’t be judgemental. Just ain’t for me anymore. Probably like sleeping outside with a bike isn’t for them haha :)

Happy birthday and Good on you! Because of a heart arrhythmia I had to give up drinking immediately 3 months ago. I haven't looked back. My wife decided to give up with me so we're also saving about $160 a month!

Happy (belated now) birthday, Katie. I'm glad you're able to relax a bit on your day. And you're absolutely right: it's your life, do what you want with it. Now I gotta get out on my bike. I'll ride a few kilometers in your honour.

Happy birthday Katie. Can't think of a better way to spend a birthday.
Ok drink. I do not drink beyond the occasional pint. I don't need it. Also, when you have kids you are too busy doing other things. Not something that I need. Oh, finally took the plunge and ordered an 11 40 cassette, chain and extender. I did my first 160 audax at the weekend. I had trouble with the hills towards the end. Some of that is running out of fuel. Some is 10 hrs of peddling. Anyway, I will see if the new ratio helps me go further. I want a 200k on my next. Also, wouldn't mind a go at lejog. So I am tweaking my ride set up to get there.

Happy Birthday, I hope you have a really nice trip! The thing with alcohol is that you stop when it is without consequences, a wise one told be you want to get spirited not drunk, if you can't stop at that - stop drinking, that is a sound and good decision.

Interesting to hear about giving up drinking. I always used to like to go out on a Friday and draw a line under the working week as it were... nothing too ridiculous but it did make me slow on a Saturday morning. I used to feel a bit silly too if we drove anywhere before say 11am, saying to my other half "could you drive? Only I don't think the alcohol's out of my system yet..."
I gave up for Lent a few times but didn't feel any major health benefits, then this year it segued neatly into lockdown so there didn't seem much point starting back in earnest! Keeping it going a bit longer I lost 3kg - I'm not overweight but I'll take that!
I'm back to having a couple of beers in front of Netflix and there is the odd evening when a bottle of red disappears alarmingly quickly but in general I'm enjoying being able to get up on Saturdays so I don't see myself going back to the old routine. So my reasons were much like yours really - I get to do more of the stuff I enjoy so why not?
