I did put a lot of love in making this challenge pack, and hoped that the contents of the envelope will be enough to make a journal - as I am clueless in making journals! It was hilarious to watch and hear you say - oh, I guess the theme of the journal is birds! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I laughed so hard! I also found it funny that you didn't like the green hahahahhaha... But LOVE what you did with the cover... It is so lovely and earthy... It was really interesting to see how you reacted to different items! For example, one of my favorite pieces was that big illustration of the little girl... I believe it is a cover of a magazine from either late 1800s or EARLY 1900s! As you were doing the flipthrough, I did not even recognize some of the pages!!! I had to pause and look - because you turned each and every one of them into individual pieces of art!!! Oh... and I learned so much about junk journal making!!! I must say, this journal is different than your usual style... Probably because you were restricted by the contents of the envelope... But isn't it amazing how a challenge as this pushes your creative boundaries? I had no idea what you would make, and just wanted the pleasure of watching the magic happen!!! Now you have inspired to actually make packs like these and offer to anyone who would want them hahahah... But honestly, it took a while and a lot of love and care to put this pack together!!! Thank you SOOO MUCH for taking part in this silly challenge I thought up one day randomly! I am soooo happy and lucky to be a part of this community where we just share our love and passion! Can you imagine in any other way we could all be brought together??? hahahaa... This is magical...!!! What a great challenge and you made it into one of your beautiful journals. I totally understand you saying that you loved the restriction and that it made things a lot easier. The yellow ochre is so much better then the green on the cover and the insides of the covers are even cooler then the outside.
I have to say, Barbara, you are a true artist & extremely creative at that!! Even though I haven’t even (yet!) made one journal, I think I understand when you say it’s freeing to have a set assortment of papers & ephemera to use! It’s a good thing you knew how to figure out a new spine, that in itself would have sunk some of us. I love the use of the thread for the actual binding! I did want to mention that Tim Holtz does have a complete set distress oxide sprays & the stains like your beloved honey color still exist, but he changed the bottle, so that they are now in a spray bottle. The formulation of the stains are exactly the same. You won’t be able to make your trademark splot (which I love!), but you can unscrew the sprayer & dip into or pour out the stain. I hope that helps! I am busy removing the pages from a 100 year old book & making them into little ephemera tags. I had to glue 2 pages together, because when I tried creasing it, one sheet would almost fall apart, but 2 pages together are amazingly strong. I got out my tearing ruler & have been tearing the pages into all sizes & shapes & then inking the edges! So I’m inching closer to starting a journal! Haha! You move at the speed of light! I’m rather like that cute little sloth who only moves a bit at a time!! Thanks for a wonderful look at a fabulous journal!

Incredible. You have a gift of imagination and the ability to make something beautiful out of 'junk'. I loved every single piece of paper you showed as you went through the papers you received...I was thinking how stumped I was, and could not imagine what to do with any of the papers...then I watched you work your miracle as you made the most beautiful journal ever. You are able to look at an entire piece of paper, and imagine how you could use bits and pieces of it and make pockets and tags and envelopes and collages and on and on. You are just so amazing. I love everything you do!

I am a new subscriber and love what you did with this journal. Very informative and inspiring! My grandmother passed away several years ago and I threw away SO much old paper she had saved. I didn't know what ephemera was then and I didn't know how old paper could be so beautifully transformed. Nothing I can do about it now, but I did grieve a few moments.

LS Ayres was a big department store in the Indianapolis area. They were bought out by the company that owns Macy's. LS Ayres was quite an institution in Indianapolis. They had a large multi-story building in downtown Indy. They always did a large Christmas display during the holiday season. They also had the LS Ayres Tea Room restaurant. The Tea Room was eventually recreated in the Indiana State Museum. I think they were able to recreate all the furniture and decorations from the Tea Room right down to the wallpaper. And the recipes.. They were famous for their Chicken Velvet Soup and their Chicken Salad.

If you want to take off your masking tape in the future you can use your heatgun to warm up and kind of melt the glue of the masking tape. Then you can take it of without ripping the paper. Thank you for all your inspiration and positive thoughts. Love from the Netherlands petra

Very nice! I actually lived in Indianapolis as a child and my mother worked at LS Ayres as a seamstress so seeing the journal with the magazine images was really great! Wonderful job!

If you get the papers provided you have to challenge yourself in a different way to make it become your journal and style and you really did succeed. I love the coffee and wild honey splatters. Barbara, I love this journal! Please do videos on how you use it. I'm so interested to know if you will cover up a lot of the pages as most of us do, when you start to use it. Some of the pages are so thin.... I love the journal as it is. I personally do a lot of writing and decorating, adding things from my life, so I am curious about how much of the old beauty you keep and where and how you use it.

I was up because I woke up early. After reading my scriptures for the day, I saw you do the nautical challenge and this one showed up. I started watching , had a cup of tea 🍵 and almost made it to the end , but got sleepy. I'm up now it's morning in the USA. I enjoyed watching this project. You did a great job.. The items sent to you were wonderful. I found some things simular when I got things from my grandmother. Some before I was born. I'm going to make an ancestry journal.. family memories are important to me. I hope to go back as far as I can. Thanks for sharing this. Loved the way you made the signatures.
Love what you created with your package of ephemera! Plus, I learned a new way to insert the signatures into a spine. I have been a bookbinder for over 10 years but just discovered Junk Journaling since coronavirus...I've made 6 in the past 6 weeks and am planning to make another this afternoon. I had already decided to make my own cover as I have a pile of brown signatures, made from paper used to stuff a Blick order, that I will use as a base and they are an odd size. I am also a printmaker so I have piles of materials to do junk journaling with -- a fun way to recycling all the bits and bobs.
@@49dragonflies Not so speedy -- we've been on "stay at home" since March 8, so almost 10 weeks. Six in six weeks is just one a week. I don't have children or other responsibilities, so am basically creating something approximately 6 hours of every day...

I say you more than managed. You did an amazing job! I flew to a scrapbooking retreat years ago. Obviously, I had to be very selective about the supplies I took with me. I found, like you did, that a limited amount of supplies actually forced me to be more creative. The pages I made there are some of my all-time favorites.

I lived in Indianapolis for 40 years.. How fun to see an old Indianapolis Star Magazine making it's way to Vienna..
LS Ayres was a big department store in the Indianapolis area. They were bought out by the company that owns Macy's. LS Ayres was quite an institution in Indianapolis. They had a large multi-story building in downtown Indy. They always did a large Christmas display during the holiday season. They also had the LS Ayres Tea Room restaurant. The Tea Room was eventually recreated in the Indiana State Museum. I think they were able to recreate all the furniture and decorations from the Tea Room right down to the wallpaper. And the recipes.. They were famous for their Chicken Velvet Soup and their Chicken Salad.

If you want to take off your masking tape in the future you can use your heatgun to warm up and kind of melt the glue of the masking tape. Then you can take it of without ripping the paper.

What a nice challenge and off course you would manage this haha. If you get the papers provided you have to challenge yourself in a different way to make it become your journal and style and you really did succeed. I love the coffee and wild honey splatters. Also adding the tabs and eyelets I really like. Great Journal!!

Barbara, I love this journal! Please do videos on how you use it. I'm so interested to know if you will cover up a lot of the pages as most of us do, when you start to use it. Some of the pages are so thin.... I love the journal as it is. I personally do a lot of writing and decorating, adding things from my life, so I am curious about how much of the old beauty you keep and where and how you use it.

I was up because I woke up early. After reading my scriptures for the day, I saw you do the nautical challenge and this one showed up. I started watching , had a cup of tea 🍵 and almost made it to the end , but got sleepy. I'm up now it's morning in the USA. I enjoyed watching this project. You did a great job.. The items sent to you were wonderful. I found some things simular when I got things from my grandmother. Some before I was born. I'm going to make an ancestry journal.. family memories are important to me. I hope to go back as far as I can. Thanks for sharing this. Loved the way you made the signatures.

Love what you created with your package of ephemera! Plus, I learned a new way to insert the signatures into a spine. I have been a bookbinder for over 10 years but just discovered Junk Journaling since coronavirus...I've made 6 in the past 6 weeks and am planning to make another this afternoon. I had already decided to make my own cover as I have a pile of brown signatures, made from paper used to stuff a Blick order, that I will use as a base and they are an odd size. I am also a printmaker so I have piles of materials to do junk journaling with -- a fun way to recycling all the bits and bobs.

@@49dragonflies Not so speedy -- we've been on "stay at home" since March 8, so almost 10 weeks. Six in six weeks is just one a week. I don't have children or other responsibilities, so am basically creating something approximately 6 hours of every day...

I say you more than managed. You did an amazing job! I flew to a scrapbooking retreat years ago. Obviously, I had to be very selective about the supplies I took with me. I found, like you did, that a limited amount of supplies actually forced me to be more creative. The pages I made there are some of my all-time favorites.
