I'm here to stay on this channel, this format is spot on. Long and show every step missing nothing, full sends to pro level out the gate. I've watched thousands of yacht/boat repair videos, but they always leave you needing to fill in the pieces somewhere along the line, to the point you aren't confident you know everything you need to give it a go. Your videos crush it and make me want to give it a go now, awesome job dude!
The only thing I would add (and maybe you have already done it) is “refresher” short form video that essentially hits each step… so that one can learn on the long form (best training on YT) but have the same info condensed as a reminder for the second, third and fourth time we try this.
As someone who has just bought a small, 48-year old fibreglass boat in need of substantial refurbishment, I cannot tell you how pleased I am to have found your channel (and I’ve been sifting through a lot of YT videos about fibreglass). Your videos are truly exceptional; tangible, useable information about the techniques and products used, and shown in detail. Thank you for not skimping or cutting things out in the edit, this is terrific information, and I’m much obliged. Cheers!
Congratulations on your purchase! Twiggy looks like a great project boat with lots of potential! I took a few minutes to check out your channel this morning and found it to be entertaining, informative and relaxing. I am now a subscriber to Cruising The Cut and looking forward to watching more of your content! I am glad to help in any way I can, and plan on making a number of DIY gelcoat and fiberglass related videos over the next few months. If you have any suggestions for content or questions about repair and restoration work, please feel free to ask. Best of luck to You, and Safe travels!
Great source for info David, I’m looking forward to watching you bring back the beauty and life to Twiggy. I love his attention to the details of the repair and the reasoning behind each action.
Nice. I don't usually mask off for all those small spots but process is the same. As an artist, airbrush etc. who transitioned in to body work and boat repair work you've been spot on.
I appreciate you sharing your technique(s) and the steps ... based on your experience...... I feel like I CAN do this after watching you NOT skip steps and show ALL ( most of ) the time it has taken... thanks again .
I have a 1969 Boston whaler still in real good shape needs a lot of chip repair to the bottom also gelcoat inside and out I found your show looking for videos on red gel coating and patch repair I love your videos The only one I found that has actually helped me and give me information I need thank you
I am an avid sea kayaker and our boats take a great deal of abuse, especially on the hull, from pulling them up on sandy or sometimes somewhat rocky beaches. I am just getting into doing fiberglass repair and your videos are the only ones I have seen that take this kind of repair to the level that I am looking for. Thank you so much for posting this stuff!
I get a kick out of your multi-tasking: talking and explaining what you are doing while you are doing it and while you are explaining the why and the pros and cons. Not easy and yet you do it quite well. I'm willing to bet that your family ribs you occasionally about your ability to talk...and talk... Thank you Joe.
Long videos are the way to go, I appreciate the library of content. I have a lot of chips in the same area of my boat. I'm excited to take a week off work to try to restore the gel coat at some point.
Another AA++ video from Fish Bump TV......well on your way to becoming the leading source for all things fiberglass repair on UA-cam ! I wish you had been around when I started teaching myself to do fiberglass repair by trial and error because there was no one in my area to send people to. (I was only doing engine repair at the time). The quality of my work has greatly improved thanks to your videos !
You are a true expert. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge .Please don't shorten these videos!!! I greatly appreciate knowing exactly what's happening, and why, as you do every step. I wish I lived closer as I would definitely be glad to pay you to do some gelcoat repairs on my boat! At least I know it would be done correctly!
I watched the video twice, and went to work. Excellent results. My neighbor can't even find the repaired area. I was also lucky that the Gelcoat for my BW is still made. Incredible results. Saved a thousand.
This was the best gell coat video I have seen. This is exactly what I need to know as an avid boater. I have paid to have gell coat repair. Now I know what I’m paying for , and what I can do, if I have time. Thank you for the detailed explanation of this process. I hope you continue sharing your knowledge of your profession. It’s what we need to know as boaters , and to appreciate what “ glass guys “ do .
I watched your video at least half a dozen times. And then yesterday and today I did a gel coat repair on my kayak! Thank you very much. Your video helped me a great deal. My results aren’t perfect, but for my first gel coat repair, I’m very satisfied with how it came out.
Glad the gelcoat videos helped with your kayak repair! Gelcoat repair is like a lot of things in that the more you do it, the better you get. So if you are happy with your first attempt at gelcoat repair, just imagine how good your future repairs will look. I wish you all the best and appreciate you watching and commenting!
I subscribed the other day and am enjoying your videos because i'll need to do some gelcoat work on my boat soon. I prefer the longer in-depth videos you've made because it helps me ensure I don't miss an important step or tip along the way! Thank you for making these!
Hello Joe , this is Jaime from J A Fiberglass in Gilbert , AZ , it is amazing to see somebody repairing gel coat the same way as i do from the wood blocks to the masking around the repairs , i generally do add cabosil to thicken the gel coat on the first fill especially if its deep cause like you know time is money. i like to finish the repairs with 1200 paper , i find that works for me on white or light colored repairs , if its a black or dark repair i will work up to 2000 and i use the 3M Hi gloss white white with my rotary buffer , start out with a low setting and finish with a like a four setting on the buffer and that takes all the scratches out and gives it a super high close , wipe it down good and i apply my favorite wax , which is the Collinite marine paste wax. Great to see this video, your spot on and people will get good results if they follow your advice, good luck fishing.
Hi Jaime, Glad you enjoyed the video! I agree that adding cabosil can be very helpful, especially with deeper scratches and dings. I have a couple more gelcoat repair videos on the channels where we show that process. The damage on this boat was on the edge between thickened and non thickened gel in my opinion. So I went with non thickened just to show some of the DIYers out there how it could still be done even if you didn't have any cabosil. But that is a good point! Sounds like we are on the same gel coat repair program overall. It is always good to hear from another professional, and get there feedback! I feel like there is always something to be learned from other craftsmen, and I try to have a open mind about different styles and techniques. I appreciate you watching, and your positive Comments! Please feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions for content on the channel, I would like to hear your thoughts! Thanks so much!
Some of the soft yellows and blues are hard colors to match, what are some of the tricks that professionals use to get the colors right if you make them up . Yours videos are great , I like your detail explanations it’s like I’m doing it myself while watching.
Glad the video was helpful! We have several other gelcoat repair videos on the channel that you might also find interesting. Thank you very much for watching and commenting!
Amazing content! Finally someone showing how it's properly done, without skipping passages or taking shortcuts. So much passion and attention for the details: really inspiring and helpful! 👏
Great, glad you liked it! We wanted to make a legit a to z DIY style video. It is for the folks that are actually going to do a repair and want a step by step guide. Thanks for watching and commenting, it really helps the channel!
Great job helping others learn this stuff. I’m even impressed as an ex body repair man and corvette restoration guy. Of course corvettes don’t come with gelcoat. But they did have SMC. Sheet molded compound. From 73-2004. Before that it was blown into molds using polyester. Awesome to see such skills being broken down and explained in easy terms. Thank you for all your effort.
I was very reluctant to trying a repair like this on my own, but after watching this video, I feel very confident that I can make this happen. Thank you!
Just did a spot with 2 gouges from the winch post. They were there covered in keel guard when I bought the boat. Years ago I built surfboards do not need to glass but the 2 part gel cost video was spot on and the repair turned out great. Thanks
I needed this video. Thank you for showing the entire repair. I could watch and learn for hours please don't think the video was to long it was absolutely awesome! You are my Sensei!
Big thanks for an outstanding tuition. Im about to start repairing quite a few chips, scratches & cracks on my 38' catamaran & you've shown me the way.
I'm with everybody else that have commented on here about how you give the absolute best details of any video that I have watched on trying do any kind of repair by far keep up the good work and please don't skimp
Finally! Someone that gives real detailed information on how to do these repairs 🎉.. Came across your channel in looking for some products to purchase for my boat 🛥️.. I like that U take your time in explaining things, & I don’t mind that the videos are longer because they are very informative.. Big shout out from Miami Florida 🏝️.. I look forward to seeing more videos from your channel, Thank U 👋🏻
Excellent video series. Can't wait to watch more. I'm learning SO much. Thank you! 👍👍 And don't worry about the length of the videos. It has to be lengthy to be informative in great detail so please keep em coming.
That's awesome, Glad you are finding the to be informative! We will keep the long form content rolling out for you guys. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I truly appreciate it!
This a gold rush for me, thanks guys. Watched fiberglassing, gelcoating, and gelcoat repair. Can't wait to watch more. Love how you present, thoroughly!! Could not have been better!! ❤ Planning to do small repairs and modify my sailboat a bit here in Norway. Being a total newbie with GRP alterations, could not do it without you. 😊😊
Love the vids. Thank you. Just bought my second boat a Drascombe Lugger and it needs a little work. I feel confident now in attempting some of these small repairs. 🙏👍🇮🇪
New to the channel. Thanks for putting all this work into making me a little smarter. I have a deep gouge in my boat and I'm working up my courage to tackle it. This is definitely helping.
First time watching a fiberglass repair. Holy crap I cant believe how much time and effort it takes for just a couple small nicks. Glad you have the patience for this kind of work. I would never make it in this kind of business as it is tedious work.. But it does look amazing.
Thank you for the educational video. This was great. I learned so much. You do an excellent job of delivering knowledge. You don’t say ummm or aaa . Great job. Easy to watch.
I just want to say thank you, and throw some much deserved compliments at you guys (found you recently). The filming is bang on, the host is absolutely a fantastic natural presenter, and I really appreciate the highlighting of key products and techniques. It’s plain to see you guys are in the flow state and nailing it out of the park.
👌👍So much time and products to make a good job ! Now I understand better the cost of having a small repair done by a professional, no matter how small. Thank you for opening our eyes.
I really enjoy your style here, and I agree with another comment in the thread. You have a great teaching skill to boot. We do the same type of work, though you have some years of experience on my 22years. And btw, MiniCraft is my favorite gelkote to work with as well as their pigments. Thanks for posting all your work here, I certainly enjoy watching!
Thank you for taking a well-paced, thorough, and methodical tutorial. Your presence, approach, and voice are very effective for camera facing. I am in the beginning stages of restoring my heavy oxidized bass boat. Like the others, I have done and still researching on YT a lot. In doing a small area as a test, I wasn't happy with the results of the product I was using. Then I found Starke Level R and Starke's other products, and the difference was night and day. As per your video request to offer suggestions, you might want to give Level R and its complementary products a look. Great job and I have happily subscribed.
if you are just learning how t do fiber glassing this guy will save you years of learning by making mistakes. I wish he was around when I built my Roberts 25.
Thank you for this content. I have a little c-dory in need of some minor repairs. Your videos are really helping me get a handle on how to complete them myself.
Incredible !!! I have a drift boat and you have given me the confidence to do this myself !!! Thankyou !!! I paint houses for a living and that guide coat will be used on my int trim in my homes !
Seriously, this vid had me thinking I could watch it 20 times & try a repair. Our 'mechanic' (who is no longer helping me) said he could fix some dent & scrapes on our 42 Californian. Ohhh my, did he make a mess. Globs of wrong color gelcoat in several places...do you have a how to fix other peoples bad jobs video?? Lol Signed, 'Desperate in Pensacola' Ha & Thanks Capt Joe
@@rope2hocks I am so glad you enjoyed the video, and found it interesting! Sorry to hear about your gelcoat repair gone wrong! Your suggestion for a fixing a failed gelcoat repair is actually a very good idea. I will try to do something like that for you guys in the future. I appreciate you watching and commenting
Been viewing your videos. Just so informative and super detailed. Luv your videos so much about repair and gel coating. I watched your videos numerous times to get confidence. Then purchased (approx: $800 since Qrt Spectrum Atrlantic Blue for $360) a bunch of materials and equipment to complete a DIY. Two months ago we had a minor stupid accident docking my Cobia 237 due to high wind and turbulent water. To keep it short, the above water line bow keel hit the upper edge of the concrete barrier. It ruptured the glass and gelcoat with a hole thru and bunch of port and starboard gouges and scratches. To sum it up.....ugly. Since the damages are above the water line, I believe you can consider it cosmetic but still ugly. Thank so much for your videos, I was able to fix everything and able to do trial an error (perhaps doing it close to 10 times) lots of practice for over a month due to weather (rain and wind conditions). Results: color matching not perfect, but hard to notice. I was able to feather and gel coating came out really nice. I still think it is achievable for my DIY to make it close to a professional job, thank you so again for your mentoring. You are the best!
Thanks so much! Sounds like the damage to your boat was just the kind of thing these videos are intended for. We all have those kind of things happen to us from time to time, it is just part of boat ownership. It sure feels good to know how to repair that kind of stuff when it happens! Sounds like you stuck with it, and had good results, Congrats! Glad the videos helped! I truly appreciate you watching and commenting!
capt Joe you make really good instructional videos, the material is very detailed and comprehensive- just what I was looking for! I don't think I've seen better ones on YT. It's good to watch, thanks! Greetings from Poland!
I really enjoyed watching your video and the level of detail that you put into your work. My gelcoat repairs haven’t come out quite as nice as yours still a work in progress would you be able to review handling spider cracks and stress cracks top side and the best way to Repair those as well as gelcoat color matching?
Glad you are enjoying the videos! I have had a LOT of practice in the gel coat and fiberglass world, and I am still learning new things about it. Like a lot of things It is something you will get better at every time you do it! I will do my best to do some color matching and stress crack work for you guys, I appreciate the suggestion!
Excellent video. I will be doing this on my canoe where the epoxy was worn down in the wind to the kevlar. I've done quite a bit of research and your channel is excellent, the best I have seen. Thanks.
Wow, thanks so much for the kind words! Just remember that gelcoat can have curing or bonding issues sometimes when applied over epoxy. If the gelcoat doesn't work well, you might need to use a epoxy based primer coat and paint system. I will try to do a video on this subject soon. Thanks for watching, and best of luck with your project!
Thanks again always checking up on your videos,, I'm a believer in your work I know how it is to be stuck around what your family did it's what you know thanks for the help
I love your channel, I’m the fiber glass guy for Gasparilla Marina in Placita, Florida kind of funny almost every cool brand of stuff you pull out is exactly what I use and I like to make my own blocks too. I like to use starboard has the same properties of wood just about, but it doesn’t get slimy in the water if you leave it in the bucket overnight lol I’m sure you know what I’m talking about
Truly a professional. Thank you sir! My jaw dropped when you went from 1500 to 2000 grit, that’s when I knew you have your sh_t together and then some. I bought a fixer upper 21’ stingray 210 SS cuddy that is in process of a floor repl. It needs a stringer repl too. Your info is increadably helpful.
Love the videos: so much experience and wisdom packed into each one, and they are easy to understand! Moving onto a liveaboard next a week and I'll be using your content to help catch up on some "deferred maintenance."
WOW I'm about to buy 23ft trailer sailer, needs some touch ups, you have given me the confidence that I can do a job like what you did. I do have patience. My first video of yours, I sure will be watching all the rest. thanks mate.

The only thing I would add (and maybe you have already done it) is “refresher” short form video that essentially hits each step… so that one can learn on the long form (best training on YT) but have the same info condensed as a reminder for the second, third and fourth time we try this.

New to the channel. Thanks for putting all this work into making me a little smarter. I have a deep gouge in my boat and I'm working up my courage to tackle it. This is definitely helping.
Welcome aboard! Glad to help!
First time watching a fiberglass repair. Holy crap I cant believe how much time and effort it takes for just a couple small nicks. Glad you have the patience for this kind of work. I would never make it in this kind of business as it is tedious work..
But it does look amazing.
Haha, thanks! Yes, it is more to it than most realize. Glad you enjoyed the video!

I appreciate you watching and commenting on the videos! Glad you enjoy them!

Great method and style to these videos! Gonna go out and do some repairs on my Beneteau sailboat after watching these. Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the videos! I wish you all the best with your sailboat repairs!
Glad the videos are helpful, and I will check out the stark products. Thanks for the suggestion!
I'm getting ready to embark on a don't do it project. And I've been watching like crazy.
Glad you are enjoying the channel, thanks so much for watching!
if you are just learning how t do fiber glassing this guy will save you years of learning by making mistakes. I wish he was around when I built my Roberts 25.

MASTER CRAFTMAN....FANTASTIC JOB..JOE. Hi from Melbourne Australia.;-)
Wow, thanks!
Thank you for this content. I have a little c-dory in need of some minor repairs. Your videos are really helping me get a handle on how to complete them myself.
Glad to help, and best of luck with your project!
Incredible !!! I have a drift boat and you have given me the confidence to do this myself !!! Thankyou !!! I paint houses for a living and that guide coat will be used on my int trim in my homes !
That's fantastic! Glad to help and thanks for watching!
Yup this is a great video. I am now confident I can fix a couple of dings in my gelcoat. Going into detail is really helpful.
Thanks
Awesome, glad to help!
I’ve loved seeing every step you make. I won’t be doing any of it, but sure helps to know what the process done correctly looks like! Well done sir!
Glad you enjoyed the vid! Thanks so much for the kind words!
Lol
Signed, 'Desperate in Pensacola' Ha &
Thanks Capt Joe
@@rope2hocks I am so glad you enjoyed the video, and found it interesting! Sorry to hear about your gelcoat repair gone wrong! Your suggestion for a fixing a failed gelcoat repair is actually a very good idea. I will try to do something like that for you guys in the future. I appreciate you watching and commenting
If you need a "gel coat gone wrong" boat for a future vid, I'll be your Huckleberry...😂 😂😂
@@rope2hocks Haha! Maybe so!
Awesome! That guide coat is amazing stuff!! Thanks for the video.
Glad you liked it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Great video. Gives detailed steps for a great repair. Thanks.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
I love that you went through the whole process. Thanks!
You are so welcome!
capt Joe you make really good instructional videos, the material is very detailed and comprehensive- just what I was looking for! I don't think I've seen better ones on YT. It's good to watch, thanks! Greetings from Poland!
Thanks so much! I am glad you found the videos to be helpful! We have friends from Poland, Would love to visit some day!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wow, thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video and best of luck with your project boat!
