    Great video Justin. We have sold the TD-17KVX with 14" snares we have converted and it does make the kit so much cooler. One thing I would point out is that the ATV AD-H14 hi hats do not 100% work with the TD-17 module. The main issue is the closed chick sound is very hard to get unless you really mash on your hi hat pedal. They work fine with TD-30 and TD-50.

    I just want to say thanks for putting out all these Roland TD17 in depth videos. They are very helpful in that i bought a td17 module a couple of weeks ago. A major upgrade from my Alesis Command kit. I built a DYI conversion from a junior acoustic kit. Now I'm going to upgrade the hi hat and ride cymbal. Thanks for the td17 tutorials.

    I broke my kd10, I tried dialing it in but no matter what, it triggered inconsistently. So, I replaced it with a kd120 and wow, it's so much better. I've also converted my 13 inch snare and added an Alesis Strike Multipad. I used the pdx 12 for a floor tom and used the extra 8" to the left of my hihat. This channel has helped me so much with edrums, thanks for the great content.

    I just bought a TD-17KV and my long term plan is close to this. Adding a CY-15R will be the first step though. How sets over $1000 don't come with a 3 zone ride is beyond me. I almost bought the Simmons DS1200 extended kit for $1199, but everyone complained about the hotspots.

      hi! I also want to upgrade the kd-10, do you think it's worth buying the KD-120? Is it really much better? KD-10 is ok but due to its complete lack of rebound it can't play double bass on it as fast as on a real kick drum (which is a bummer). So i was wondering if KD-120 would be better... unfortunately where I live there is nowhere to try it.

    PCY135 YAMAHA are cheap but solid and reliable 13" cymbals
    ... It works out of the box as a 2 zone crash with an Roland module ... Very easy to disconnect the bell sensor if it bothers you to have the bell triggering the edge zone ... It s also possible to convert it to a 3 zone Roland compatible ride ... it s a bit more work but still doable ... Same hack works for PCY155 , 15" for 30 more bucks ...

    • @wouterengel1345
      @wouterengel1345 5 років тому

      Hey Stephane, thanks for the info. I'm looking into buying the TD-17KV and complement it with a PCY-155 as ride and a PCY-135 as a hihat in combination with drum-tec's universal hihat trigger (to use with a regular hihat stand). What do you think about that hihat combo, will it work well with the TD-17 module? If so, it's 250€ cheaper than the TD-17KVX so it will allow me to buy some extra stuff. What do you think? Good idea or go for the TD-17KVX?

    • @stephaneparage2530
      @stephaneparage2530 5 років тому

      @@wouterengel1345 I never used a TD17 , but it should work . I use a converted PCY135 with a td9 , it works really well , actually , the bell triggering is much better than with a cy13r . The cymbal registers lower bell hits , so you dont have to bash the bell with the shaft so hard ... If you go for second hand PCY155 , be sure to have the rotation stopper with it .... Here s the link to see pics of the 3 zone mod : www.vdrums.com/forum/advanced/diy/51153-pcy135-cymbal-mod-for-td-20/page6 ... For the DRUMTEC controller , i dont know ... It should be the same the same that the GO-edrum one , Justin said the GO-edrum is OK ... You could also use the PCY13 with the FD9 pedal included in the kit ... Imo , it s not so important to have a mooving Hihat .

    I use EZ Drummer 2 with my TD-17KVX, but I can't find a kick drum that I like. They all sound very thin. I also have the Country pack and there aren't any great kicks there either.
    One tip: I was having trouble playing hi hat barks and was finding the VH-10 would not track quick openings. I finally tried cranking up the spring tension on my hi hat pedal and suddenly it worked perfectly.

    Justin, you didn't specifically mention whether the 15" ride cymbal plays better with the bell. I know you were troubled by how hard it was to strike the bell on the 13" ride, does that get any better on the 15"? Thanks, great videos and great information!

    Great video Justin. It is a really good timing this video is uploaded. I just had a chance to play the td17 kvx in person and the td25 kv. Boy these 2 kits are too small. I was so used to the size of the td20. But these 2 kits are much lighter than the td 20 which we have to carry at the end of sunday service to clear off the stage. I did think of getting td11 kvx or the td17kvx and thinking of upgrading the small size pads to the sizes of the td20 pads but i kept on holding my thoughts for a while just in case if i upgraded it to the wrong pads and it wont work and just a waste of money. Great thing is that now i have decided to get the 17kvx instead of 11kvx. Your info saves me a ton of researching. Great stuff man.

    Thank you for all these reviews. I am currently looking into buying the 17kvx kit very soon, and your videos have been so helpful - really appreciate it!
    I have a quick question though, is it possible to reverse the left and right bars of the frame? To my understanding the left bar is longer as it is meant to rack the td17 module, but I was hoping I could use that extra length to create a two floor tom setup. Do you think this would be possible? Thank you

    • @MahonaBona
      @MahonaBona 5 років тому +1

      yes it's possible. just loosen the screws and remove each pole and switch them. I have the kvx and honestly the rack is one of my least favorite things about it. the tiny gap for the bass drum makes it so you really don't have much freedom to position it anywhere you want it. I also find that the mount for the module makes it really hard to get it anywhere near you given the shape of the rack (esp if you have a double bass pedal). And the wire snake really doesn't give you the ability to relocate it. Those are my biggest gripes with the kit. I still very much enjoy it and think it's probably best bang for your buck edrum kit you can get right now. just need to spend some additional time/money/effort to switch a couple things out and make it so it works for me.

    I’ve been looking for an answer to this very simply question but I have yet to find someone explaining how to solve this issue:
    KV2 (the combo I have) has a snake cable which includes both hi-hat inputs (hi-hat and hi-hat control); VH-10 REQUIERES 2 stereo cables to work properly, but the snake cable has a MONO hi-hat control cable. Someone told me I could just “upgrade my hi-hat” instead of returning my kit and getting a KVX (Amazon seller conned me - at least the “price” was of a KV2 - but he announced it as a KVX2… (MOTHERF…)
    Obviously, things will never work as intended when you’re missing half the “computing information” for the hi-hat to work properly. How does one “upgrade” a KV2 to a KVX2? Do I need to purchase a snake cable that is specific to the KVX2…? Cause obviously the drum module is the same so there shouldn’t be any issues there (TD-17).
    I am only posting this rant here in hope that someone KNOWS how to actually connect this VH-10 to a TD-17 from a KV2 combo (cause I’m guessing the snake cable that comes with the KVX models DOES indeed have two stereo cables for the hi-hat and hi-hat control).
    I’ve tried many things, and I’m about to spend yet another freaking hundo on a snake cable that I HOPE will have stereo control hi-hats. If you know I’m on the wrong path, I’d appreciate your advice before I pull the wallet-trigger once again to account for the stupidity of my Amazon seller (probably not stupid, just intentional scammer).
    Damit Roland seriously💀

    nice justin.. id love to switch those toms out like you did... but yeah budget. funny enough im going smaller to a 8 pdx for first tom.. for now. i also use a old tama rack as i dont like the look of this rack. far as sound of kit.. my presonus mixer i now use the compression and reverb from that (and eq but i really so far have kept it flat as is) but i feel this has really brought the sound out of the kit for me a little more... my next upgrade will prob be dm2 just to mix in some more pads etc. im sure most would hate using more than one module but i dont mind and the flexibility of the mixer allows me to pan them or even add certain effects to one module not the other or change the kit one one module for percussion or alt snare pads while leaving the base kit alone.

    I had a bad experience with my 2box. It came faulty and since it shipped from Europe to US, returning it proved impossible unless I wanted to pay international shipping and more customs fees. So I'm looking for a more tried and true option to replace the 2box module. Was thinking of going Td-17 with SSD5. I know I won't have issues with either. And they'll work great with my converted drums. Just be careful people, if you get the drumit 3, make sure it's not an original release. It has a bad sd card that has to be replaced. And replacing it can break your screen. Doesn't always happen but it did in my case, and it was installed by a professional. Or just go td17 from the beginning like I should have done.

      Wow thanks for the heads-up, I've been keeping an eye open for the 5 or 3. Thing I don't care for on the TD-17, it doesn't support Position Sensing on pads. Plus like Justin mentioned in his other video, the cable snake and limited input connections. Although not bad considering.

    • @martymet
      @martymet 5 років тому

      Don't think the drumit3 supports positional sensing. Dunno about DI5. Positional sensing is kind of a joke anyway. It barely works and is so subtle that I can't really hear it. So, definitely not paying hundreds more for that feature. And with the faulty DI3; Apparently the problem was/is common. Sooo many people had this issue. To me it's a $900 paper weight. Not worth it.

    Thanks for the video. I got my TD-17 last summer. I bought another PDX-12 to be my floor tom. I sold the extra tom. I had an old TD-4Sx and used the snare arm from that for the floor tom. That converted snare though looks awesome! I got the CY15/R though the difference in size didn't seem that big of a deal AND the bell has the problem so many have reported. I have the Slate Drums, but haven't tried it with the TD-17. I'd take a Pearl Mimic if someone gave it to me, but too pricey for the bad playing I do. Slate Drums should be enough if I want to use something other than the TD-17 module.
    Can someone please tell me where to find preset packs or sample packs I can upload to the TD-17.
    I want the PDX-100 for the rack toms mainly because of the way they look. I do ok on the the toms though on occasion I hit the white plastic but not enough to make me spend the money. I do not feel compelled to upgrade the kick as the KD-10 feels good to me. I don't have a sway problem with it.

    I absolutely love what you've done! I almost didn't want to get this kit because of the snare being so close to the drumset. Can you buy those accoustic snares with triggers in them already? And are they still very loud? Lol

      You could always buy a snare stand and put the snare on that. For that matter, you could buy stands for the whole kit and freely position all the pads wherever you want.

    Hi Justin, love the channel... Have found all vids very helpful trying to pick a kit.... I'm thinking I want to go the dtx8 mesh..what are your thoughts on a second kick pad rather than upgrading to the kp100 and using a double kick? Also in your opinion would you upgrade a 17kvx or get the dtx8? Cheers from Australia.

    Hey Justin I figured out a work-around for the KD10 movement issue, which works for me.
    I have my TD17 setup on some ply and padding for noise reduction. So I drilled two holes into the ply board and then screwed the spurs into it.
    Problem solved...even when using double kicks.
    Cheers Paul.

    Is it possible to use the Roland RT-30HR with Remo silent stroke on an acoustic snare instead of inside trigger system like shown in the video. I have to swap drum head for some light brush-play sessions. Thanks.

    • @Edrumcenter
      @Edrumcenter 5 років тому +1

      Its possible but I would recommend a thicker mesh head for a snare. The Silent strokes are 1 ply and tend to stretch more which can affect triggering especially on the RT30HR which is designed and tested with the 2 play Roland heads.

    Alesis strike cymbals, in my experience, are more expensive than Roland or ATV. A 14" crash is like $350 new.
    You also didn't mention some 'real feel' cymbal options like Field. They are still fairly budget, or at least on-par with ATV and Roland prices, and feel vert good. Throw on a cymbal mute and/or rubber tips on drum stick and they are just as quiet as rubber cymbals.

      TD17 has one additional input. You can make that extra input whatever you want. Cymbal, Tom, Percussion. You will need a cable and go into each kit and set the sound for this additional pad. There is not cable included as part of the cable snake. Hope that helps. Cheers.
