A Fix for Zipper Retainer Boxes

- Aloha Sailors and Tailors! Retainer Boxes on the bottom end of separable zippers are not replaceable, specially on big awning zips. This is my solution to the problem. If you have a better way please let us all know!

The side of my favourite furry solar fleece dangled above a light bulb and the plastic bottom box melted completely (luckily it didn’t start a fire!). The hook and eye suggestion is wonderful. I sewed a stop at the bottom to keep the ‘car’ from falling off, but didn’t think of your solution. I was originally just going to cut the zipper off and stitch it into a jean jacket as a lining…. Thank you so very much!!

In cases where the awning or bimini is left on for extended periods (i.e. months) and only removed occasionally, another option would be to install a bottom stop near where the retainer box would normally be. This is a small square with four teeth and shaped like the letter 'U'. Push the bottom stop through the end of the zipper and close the teeth over with pliers. It holds the zipper together where the retaining box normally would and can easily be removed when you want to take the awning / bimini down. Again only useful where infrequent removal is the case.

I always wondered what those silver things were in my mums showing box when I was s kid. I can use one of these instead of cutting a stopper off another jacket I dont wear. Thanks.

Thank you! She is about 28 years old, doesn't talk, but loves to be part of the action. She is a Rose Breasted Cockatoo, otherwise known as a Galah in Auz. I live on Maui and there is only one other on the island. I would love to find a friend for her, but so far cockatiels have been her only bird friends. I've had her 10 years.
It's not pretty, but I've also put a safety pin right above the heat seal tape, on the inside of the jacket. The circle part at the end of the pin catches the zipper. It takes a little extra wiggling to get it to zip up, but this is a kid's $8 hoodie, and the tailor said $16 to replace the whole zipper. :/

Thank you Marian, I was looking for a solution for a broken stopper on my wife's jacket. One more thing about the bird you have. I always wondered why these pet birds do not fly away. Is there a secret like clipping the feathers ?
I clip the flight feathers (which are the longer ones extending past the main "wing". Some people clip just one side, but I clip both. She comes down fairly fast but she's still balanced enough not to crash land.

So the summary is that you've replaced the missing "zipper retainer box" with an eye & hook sown over the zipper posts to stop the zipper going off end with numerous half hitches shown on side that keeps the zipper to stop it coming off that end at all.
