In this video I check if it is possible to punch through a steel wall if it is frozen with liquid nitrogen. I talk about the science behind freezing metals and test what happens to different metals at liquid nitrogen temperatures.

The entire market around diamonds is a lie, anyway. There are enough diamonds kept on stockpile to last the jewelry market five years. Diamonds are carbon, they're just pretty to look at and that's why they're so "precious".
@Eddie Hitler I'd love to see those headlights, Mr. Hitler.
Yeah I know all of the above I just wanted to make a funny comment. The only reason diamonds are so expensive is because they can’t just be made by anyone at home and because they look good. I could go to Florida and skin a crocodile and get a fancy shmancy bag for just the price of some gasoline but you don’t see me doing that lol.
@Eddie Hitler Thanks! Really appreciate it 👍
That was a beastly right jab.
It's a similar process to forging. If you quench a hot peice in water, the rapid cooling causes it to harden so fast that it can crack or break while if you do it in oil, it cools faster leaving it hard but not so hard that it can crack or shatter with the smallest hit.
Him: Let’s cool the metal so it’s so brittle that we can punch a hole in it.

How to crack a safe with liquid nitrogen.
Step 1: Glue the safe door so it's airtight.
Step 2: Drill &tap a 1/4 inch hole in the safe.

Nice one
These videos are so informative . I really got to know a lot from this episode of action lab
In the case of the rebar, It could also be the thickness of the material. Liquid Nitrogon only flash freezes stuff, and the cold doesn't sink in very far. For example if you drop a water balloon in. you can pull it back out peel of the balloon and crack the ice like an egg revealing a still liquid center.
The reason the screw head broke off was the thin neck transition to the thick head creates a notched area which makes a stress concentrator.
One of the other fun things about cooling metals and alloys is that they form a really cool crystalline structure internally when you snap them when they're cold. It makes them more prone to fracturing.
you know you've made it as a youtuber once you've been sponsored by raid shadow legends

I remember hearing someone that stainless steel was invented to impart resistance to shearing at very cold temperatures! (Stainless name was added after observing the resistance to corrosion)
Indeed. Stainless steel has a lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) than plain mild steel. This would mean that at colder temperatures(still above DBTT), stainless steel would retain its ductile properties hence have greater shear strength than mild steel that may lose its ductile properties at the same temperature.
Can you do an experiment by making a hole in a barometer setup in the tube. Ive searched a lot but couldnt find any such videos
The screws were such a great control.
It's amazing how freezing something with water in it can turn it so brittle.
that‘s not water lol

Timesaving Tip - Just go ahead and Like the thing before watching it. Wish we could Like it twice.
This is really good to know. In Angry Birds, the blizzard spell turns the entire scaffolding into ice.
Some steel, generally stainless, heat treats at cryogenic temperatures.
What if you had something red hot, then hit it with the liquid nitrogen, would the extreme shock cause anything different to happen? I often heat and cool bolts to get them unstuck, I always wondered what extreme swings would cause.
Probably warping or cracking, depends on some variables like metal type

"I should have glasses on!"
He's thinking: "_Shut up mom! I want to have fun!"
you hammered a diamond for science
A lot of this can be explained by the different crystal structures formed by different metals. Face-centered cubic materials have relatively smooth planes between atoms that can slip pretty freely. (Aluminum and austenitic stainless steel, for example) Body-centered cubic materials have ridges on the slip planes that make movement harder. As the material gets colder these move closer and closer together the number of ways in which it can shift in order to accommodate more atoms in a smaller area. Since body-centered cubic materials have far fewer angles that they can deform at, essentially all of the ductility gets "used up".
I’m wondering how much trouble you got in with your wife about the goggles 😬😳
He knows that it will not break
I actually accept that explanation. Though, I’m also willing to bet that he’ll still get in trouble for obvious reasons.
I’m afraid to dig further since it’s not my personal situation. And I really enjoy his experiments, especially since he goes into the real science unlike on other channels.

Shorter: in heat the metal is relatively flexible, when cooled it just hardens, but at the same time it actually becomes more brittle (ofc parameters depend on the material)
