There is really no other way to describe Joni Mitchel musically other than genius. She is a genius. It's a tragedy that she can never perform like this again because of her health, but the genius of her music is a legacy that will live on long after she and all the rest of us have passed on.
You're the best reactor. Joni is a giant, an angel, so talented at writing and performing. Thanks. I echo the guy below, Joni always brings me to tears.
It's an artist in her most expressive environment, sharing her inner thoughts and experiences with us. Her comfort, ease and joy make the performance that much more affecting. Wonderful reaction.
I met Joni once when i was 10. My mother is friends with Folk singer Judy Collins & my mother & i went to her home for lunch. Joni happen be there that day. I sat next to her at the kitchen table. I have fond memories of Joni leaning next to me & caressing with my hair for almost an hour while the ladies were chatting.
I watched the documentary about Laurel Canyon, and an interview with Stephen Stills. He said that when they met and started experimenting, her instrument tunings were unorthodox, and 'all over the place'. It turns out, her tunings were inspired to replicate the sounds of nature, and birdsongs that she heard, giving her songs a familiar beauty that everyone recognized, - but nobody could quite place - explaining how her music was mysterious, and drew the listener in.
I am so lucky I grew up with such great music in the late 60's and early 70's. Such awesome folk music but also great rock and metal. I married the guitar player in a rock band I used to see and it is our 50th anniversary in October.
I’m 73. Joni was as she is in this video when I had the pleasure of listening to her. None of my buddies were Joni fans, which indicates how tenuous my taste in friends was then. 😄 Loved her voice. Loved her casual folksy songs. She and Crosby, Stills & Nash were great buds, and I loved them too. Laurel Canyon, above Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, was a draw for many of the musicians of the day. She and CS&N lived up there. She had so many great songs but I had a thing for ‘Ladies of the Canyon’. ‘California’, ‘Carey’, ‘Free Man in Paris’, ‘Chelsea Morning’, ‘Woodstock’……. Too many. ‘Morning Morgan Town’ paints a lovely picture too.
I'm right there with you. As much as I liked/loved so many of the acts my friends liked (in our 20's esp.), they didn't listen to nearly as many female acts as I did. Some of them opened their minds to a few over the year, but still not like myself. Mitchell, Patti Smith, Franklin, Parton, Wynette, Rickie Lee Jones, Gillian Welch, Nina Simone, Holiday, Hynde, PJ, Beth Gibbons. So many brilliant ladies out there.
Joni's music doesn't speak to my soul like it does to so many, but you don't have to have that kind of visceral love of a singer/songwriter to know that they embody pure and absolute genius. Nobody was ever like Joni before Joni, or after Joni nor will anyone ever be like Joni
I love this Joni Mitchell is awesome! Robert Plant wrote a love song/letter for Joni Mitchell. The song is 'Going to California' its acoustic and beautiful, if you don't do a reaction to it, listen to it for your own pleasure. I really enjoy your reactions.
I was recently listening "Going to California" on Zeppelin's live album How the West Was Won and he mentions her name after one of lines. "To find a queen without a king, they say she plays guitar and cries and sings ...Joni."
@@qthelost In one live version I've listened to Robert says "Joni" almost under his breath, after singing, "Someone told me there's a girl out there With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair". Sounds like Robert changed it up now and then.
@@fanofthefade Yeah, on the 1975 Earls Court performance of the song, he doesn't say her name, but he pauses for a few seconds and says, "oh, she sings."
I loved this - thank you! If you think of reacting to Joni later in her career, I suggest her 2000 live performance of Both Sides Now - the most beautiful singing imaginable.
What a musical genius. The talent and hard work flows through every note and beautifully whimsical phrase. My favorite is A Case Of You. It gives me chills every time I hear it. Great reaction, Bethany!
@@lukeoverthere1364 I've spent a lot of time down in Moosejaw. Did you tour the underground tunnels? To smuggle out booze for Al Capone. By the way, my dad's from Invergordon, up in Scotland. Been there many times. Cheers!
I remember hearing a case of you on the radio when I was 14. Went straight out and bought the album Blue and so started my life long love of the genius that is Joni Mitchell. She is such a gift to humanity. I'd love to see your reaction to Laura Nyro one of Joni's early influences and for me so underrated.
Beautiful song! For some reason, she reminds me of Alison Krause. Both have such soft yet strong voices. Very high and clear. Lovely combination! Thanks and cheers!
Joni is very much a product of her time. She's borrowing from beat poetry in her phrasing, which feels like a stream of ideas, delivering almost spoken lines at times, singing past the bar, etc, etc. Especially in a song about California. I grew up in the state, with her music always around. This song instantly transports me to that place in that time.
Thank you! I've been waiting a long time for you to get to Joni! Great job. I am certain I am not alone in hoping that you get around to her performance of "Woodstock" from this same concert, where she is at the piano and flexes her voice in ways that are simply incredible. Keep up the great work!
VERY, VERY NICE!! Joni Mitchell is in my Top 5 favorite female singers. The audio is amazing as well! Perfect Monday Morning now! Thanks Bethany!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Totally. Joni herself recognizes it. At one point of the concert she says "I'm really in the mood to sing!" She was particularly inspired that day, even though she had a cold. Many songs of that concert are their best renditions ever! Specially "The Gallery" and "Cactus Tree" I'd say
When I was younger in my ignorance I had no time for Joni Mitchell or any of the other Singer/Songwriters from that era. As you mature you understand the craft and art that goes into songs ike California and the anazing voice that sings it. We live and learn' as they say.
It should come as no surprise that you are well-versed in Joni. With her voice and talent, how could you not? Such a lovely early recording. Grace is a wonderful descriptor for Joni Mitchell.
If there was a songwriter Mount Rushmore, Joni is an absolute lock for it. This song is from "Blue" and every song on that album would chart in the top 100 songwriter's list. She is pure genius, and sadly, I don't think enough people today have any idea how blessed we have been to live in her time. She is recognized by the musically educated, and sadly her health doesn't allow her enough exposure today to receive the proper accolades, but one can sure learn a lot about music by studying Joni. And to think she and Bob Dylan were of the same generation ... oh, the mind is blown. Over the years, my personal favorite has become "Morning Morgantown", but "For Free" and "Little Green" are in contention.
There are singers that have a unique voice, not just good but so interesting in style ,that your ears take in every note and every line.Joni is that soul and I was lucky to catch her performing in the 1970s at Meriwether Post Pavilion. She was wonderful and very entertaining in her banter with her many fans. She is also a great artist as a painter too.A charming woman indeed.
The best singer/songwriter of our generation - a poetess and painter who also created pictures with her songs. Her vocal range is amazing when young, but I find it fascinating how some talented singers adapt to the changes in their voices as they age. Joni is one, Robert Plant another and John Martyn also comes to mind because there are videos of him comparatively young and during his career until the time he was growling from a wheelchair shortly before he died.
Yes, in one live version I've listened to Robert says "Joni" almost under his breath, after singing, "Someone told me there's a girl out there With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair".
Love this reaction, the merging of your authenticity and Joni's authenticity is so satisfying! Joni was a bit before my interest in music, but as a guitarist, her unique influence is huge. Keep up this lovely work! And at the risk of sounding a creep, kudos to your hair stylist!
Thanks for great reaction 👍😊 I would really really like to see your reaction of "Like a tattoo" by Sade, live in San Diego. One of the best songs I've ever heard
Just by random bumped into this…sorry have not read any of the comments, but I hope someone mentions that “California” is Graham Nash. Many of her references were thinly veiled friends and lovers. Joni’s songwriting, playing, and singing talents are of course pure genius.
Only Joni. Just so individual in everything she does, from her de-tuned chords, to visceral lyrics & shape shifting vocals! Never matched. Check out live version of ‘Woodstock’ possibly from same concert in early 79’s think it was BBC. Quite stunning. 😍
Joni was one of a kind, to me, and I imagine how true she was to her art, as well as to her outlook on life, being true to herself with grace. She had to be present among hardcore bandmembers, who were drugged and drunk, at the Woodstock Festival for example. With her perceptive nature, that must've been hard work.
You don't see many people playing a Dulcima these days. I made two of them from kits, about 45 years ago, onefor my wife and one for my mother in law. My wife played hers until it wouldn't fit on her lap anymore (our daughter in the way) and I salvaged the other one when MIL's house was cleaned out. Both need new strings and haven't been touched for years.
My inlaws have a few and my brother in law plays them sometimes when we get together. pretty cool seeing his guitar skills translate but with a different kinda sound.
Talking about being there, if you had continued the video you would have seen who's in the audience at the end - the legendary Peter Green. That always said more about Joni's talent than album sales, the fact that the industry's best musicians all respected and admired her so much.
It’s such a beautiful song and a beautiful version. I love the contrast between her voice and the slightly janky and out-of-tune dulcimer (which she plays wonderfully). I see people have recommended Led Zeppelin’s Going To California. I’d recommend Joanna Newsom’s In California.
Always enjoy your videos.. would really like to see you do one Firehouse. CJ Snare was a wonderful singer. There is a very good live recording of Home Is Where the Heart Is from Japan. And many more from there. Again.. great videos!
Love to see you do a comparison of her "This Flight Tonight" and Nazareth's cover of it. So differentin style, but both great songs and vocal performances.
Please do one on blue October! Justin is such an amazing singer and writer would also love to see you do seether what an incredible gritty voice Shaun has ! Love the vids and channel
The first time I heard this I had to look up the meaning of "sunset pig." I should have known, because I had read about the clashes in the 60's between the young people and the police on Sunset Blvd. I just didn't make the connection.
The female trio "I'm With Her" (Sarah Jarosz, Aofie O'Donavan and Sara Watkins), cover Carrie Get out Your Cane, and all are exceptionally good in their own right, but they seemed to struggle with covering Joni
I got out when you said get out, but not because of your commentary, but because this song was not my cup of mead, I can sort of get into Paved Paradise which is a classic. I have never heard this before, and the melody for me is all over the place. While that does provide an accurate picture of bipolar Callifornia, it doesn't make it playlist material for me
I loved your reactions 😍 your smile is just like.....can't explain please react to Indian artists. 1year ago you've reacted to one of Indian singer please react again..
For some reason this relatively happy song brought me to tears. Joni Mitchell does it for me every time.
Does it to us all, my friend.

The brilliant Joni Mitchell. A National Treasure here in Canada 🇨🇦❤
-As I grow older my appreciation of Joni increases exponentially.
Joni is a musical icon. Singer, songwriter, musician …from Canada 🇨🇦

As a musician, composer, performer, Joni has no weakness. This best of her generation and that's some serious competition.
She expresses so much character and subtle storytelling through her singing. And so much humanity. One of the best ever.
It's an artist in her most expressive environment, sharing her inner thoughts and experiences with us. Her comfort, ease and joy make the performance that much more affecting. Wonderful reaction.

Slightly creepy, I don’t care who’s caressing my daughters hair for an hour I’d put a stop to it. Stop touching my kid

This live performance of Joni's was a delight as was your analysis. Pure joy.
Mitchell brings such genius to her music. She tells a story through warmth, humor, and reality and of course, her beautiful voice!

Nicely crafted.
She's one of those singers who knows how to use her voice as an instrument. And the greats can also make the difficult seem effortless.
