The problem is Twitch doesn't want to become OnlyFans. OnlyFans started as a Patreon competitor but because of their generous allowances for nudity they got a lot of adult content creators on the platform and as it grew a reputation for adult content other creators no longer wanted to create content there unless it was ironic. If you say you have an OnlyFans, people are going to assume it has adult content even though to this day you can create an OnlyFans to do anything you want pretty much. Once the ball rolls over that hill there's really no getting it back. Twitch will also see a mass exodus of advertisers if this happens as well because companies that have a family-friendly reputation don't want to be seen advertising on what people consider to be an adult site, even if they're just advertising on non-adult content.
Most sensible comment. Same thing with tumblr. The place was pretty much known as an alt porn/sexual fanart refuge, so the second they tried to get rid of it, it largely failed. Really noone could think of it as viable for anything else.

Gambling is more like using and promoting hard drug use or other extreme and disturbing addictions like questionable age stuff or gore. It's degenerate and shameful in every sense of the word.

A super simple solution for this would be to throw all adult content on a different subdomain. That makes it braindead easy for even the most novice parent to filter without blocking the rest of the site, and it can even have a separate home page for people who don't mind or want the 18+ stuff. They could also sell different ads on that subdomain. Sure, Burger King might not want to advertise there, but I'm sure Trojan or Adam & Eve would RATHER advertise on a subdomain where 100% of the audience is at least potentially interested in their products. Win-win, I'd say.

I keep seeing this idea so many times and it doesn't work. I'm not a bath babe stream embassador but I've checked them out a couple times because I was curious or saw the thumbnail of it. But if it was another site I would never visit because I am not a fan of camsites.
This has to do with why a "separate site" idea wouldn't work because now your average Twitch viewer is not there anymore. Boobs streams would not have even close to the same viewers and Twitch would lose big money from it.

Personally I think depictions of violence/gore and profanity/vulgarity is also not suitable for teenagers as young as 12 years old any more than camgirls are. The idea that kids that are barely in 6th grade can be watching that type of mature content on Twitch without supervision seems equally irresponsible.

I'm probably considered a "coomer" as well (I'm at least far from being a "conservative") but I have the intellectual honesty to say that Twitch shouldn't be allowing the topless meta, hot tub meta, or any of that type of stuff because the people doing it are clearly doing it for sexual purposes to get money out of horndogs. And I draw the line at showing pr0n to children, which is what Twitch is ending up with.
Mark my words, Twitch is gonna get sued at some point by a parent for Twitch allowing a streamer participating in something like the topless meta appear on the home page for Twitch and the kid gets addicted to it and spends his parent's credit card or something on bits for that streamer. And when that happens, Twitch is f-ed because that news will circulate and the advertisers will freak the f out in response.

@@squizzyicetea If you're a parent I don't recommend at least in the near future for platforms such as twitch to introduce effective and proper tagging, there have also been times where creators abused tags to score in the algorithm like XQC adding "vtuber" to his streams(he's not)
There should be plenty of wholesome creators in UA-cam, although as someone who's drawing I wanna say nudity almost comes as a guarantee when your learning since it allows clear view of the human anatomy which I'm sure your kid will eventually see especially if they're serious about their hobby but as mentioned there are plenty artists out there that do it for function and not in explicit ways. Your just gonna have to filter them manually and recommend to her whom you find acceptable

Literally nobody has this idea. Imagine that your kid wanted to go to the movies, so you drive him to the movie theatre to meet his friends, and they go inside to watch a movie. In this case you would be reasonably sure that it was a normal movie theatre. Now imagine you go inside the movie theatre and it turns out it is a strip club. Well that is odd since I had every reason to expect that the place with the movie theatre sign that looked like a movie theatre was what it advertised itself as being.

To be fair, Asmon, people CAN and up spending a lot of money on porn and become suicidal. Porn and gambling can both do that, because they cause someone to become impulsive. The same is true for most drugs. The truth is, Onlyfans models make a LOT of money, and so do casinos. There is a correlation there. I think it's more common with gambling, but the fact that it's less common doesn't remove the potential for danger.
At least when you go to a casino you don't have a person emotionally manipulating you, and there is a chance you get some money back. A reasonable person goes to a casino with a budget in mind and stops when they lose that much. Unfortunately, many people are unreasonable. Unreasonable people are more likely to become suicidal.

Full agreement on trying to help people with addiction. The differences in types of addiction are in collateral damage - does it destroy only your life or also everything else around you. When you have a porn addiction you will most likely only end up with severe exhaustion and a sore dick (as in you're only ruining yourself physically). When it's a gambling/substance addiction you you will lose your and your family's means of survival. I get what you're saying and I agree, but some addictions are more destructive than others and lumping them all together as if they're the same thing is muddying the water.

@@rexila Because there's a huge push right now (even outside of the USA) where governments are trying to ban or restrict pornographic content with how easily accessible it is for minors. Twitch cannot operate as a website if that governing body decides that it has too much content on its domain that is inappropriate for underaged users. Twitch has a plethora of family-friendly content creators and so a measly button that asks for the user's consent before they can watch some nude "content creator" is useless.
Asmongold is hypocritically anti-gambling but pro-pornography, completely ignoring how it's just as addictive and inappropriate for children. It's almost like he might be the one with a porn addiction and is sort of projecting.
The thing that disappoints me the most is I remember when Twitch first started and it just used to be about nerds and video games. No 99% naked E-girls advertising their OF, no multimillionaire streamers getting all the attention and their channels littered with promotions and sponsors, no crazy amounts of ads... It's a shell of it's former self now. Some would say, well just don't watch all that stuff.. it's that the community is so much different.

I think this harms the identity of what Twitch is and the audience that made it successful in the first place. Nobody is saying you cant look at porn. Google titties all you want. Twitch's identity is being changed because of this. Loads of other platforms with a 13+ entry doesnt allow a fraction of the shit twitch does. Its really bizarre seeing Asmon defend porn being shown to kids. Twitch has a very young audience as its mainly known for its videogame streamers (including a lot of minecraft). If the platform wants to become a porn site it should have a +18 warning and age restriction on accounts.
The big problem is that the platform is mixing porn with kids content and no good filter to separate both worlds. Asmon defending this is just an awful take and I hope he puts more thought into what he is saying.

I think his point is that there's already TOS approved streams with a focus on erotic content. So if you want to act on that principle it has to be 100% or its essentially meaningless
I think that as long as violent content is allowed, then pornographic content should be allowed by default, since violence is far worse and far more damaging to kids.

The biggest issue I had was that there's no way to filter NSFW streams, so you're bombarded with tits and dicks etc via streamer's thumbnails. I think at the very least you should be able to toggle NSFW streams off / filter them out if you don't wanna see it.
To be clear, I am an artist and I do stream my art sometimes on Twitch and was in full support of "artistic nudity". It's just a shame that people took it too far.

The rule update included a variety of tags related to NSFW content, didn't it? And you could optionally toggle/censor specific tags.

There isn’t anything wrong with wanting twitch to stay away from blatant sexual content. does he want twitch to be just an ‘anything’ platform? There’s is always a line drawn it just depends on where you want to draw it. He draws it at gambling. Others draw it on sexual content. The irony is the reasons he doesn’t like gambling content aren’t too dissimilar to the reasons people don’t like sexual content.

I click on the just chatting tag and the first 15 streams are topless streams. Twitch just needs to remove the tag and make it it's own site, because they're legit lettingn the Chaturbait lite, streamers drown out everyone else that wants to do a just chatting stream.
I feel as if the concept of "categories" is in and of itself the crux of the problem. Trying to shoehorn everything art into an "Art" category or everything chatting into a "Just Chatting" category is going to cause a lot of friction amongst creators and viewers that have different expectations.
This is why I really like the approach of Reddit, where users can create and manage their own communities, each having a set of published rules (based on the ToS) and a team of appointed moderators (whom are trusted) as well as community-wide content designations. In this way, it would be possible for Twitch, to cater to a wide variety of niche interests, while still affording sufficient safeguards so that 18+ streams can co-exist on the platform.
Rather than lumping creators into overly-broad categories, the community would finally be able to curate and classify the types of content in far more meaningful ways, thereby empowering both creators and viewers alike.

They realized that soft porn isn't straight up porn. People were drawing porn, which they were allowed to do, and Twitch didn't realize that porn isn't just pp in v, and they had to do a quick delete on that section of the policy. And people arguing over "photorealistic" vs hentai style art is dumb, porn is porn, and straight up photography IS ART. Twitch did NOTHING to stop the content from being shown/recommended to 13 year olds or to hide the thumbnails. 100% on Twitch both not knowing that would happen, and also not actually hiding the content from those who should not see it.
The only thing that is infuriating is Twitch admits that they misworded their TOS, people stuck to the TOS to the letter, and then they all caught 7 day bans for it with no leniency. This is the kind of shit driving creators away.
There were mass reports going on which was why so many people were getting banned. Some streamers even got banned multiple times after getting unbanned due to it despite not streaming after the original unban
People, including Asmon, saying "just don't watch it, this is unnecessary censorship" are missing the point. The issue isn't that nsfw stuff exists on the website. The issue is that the site, with the previous artistic nudity policy, pushes actual pornography to children and pollutes the non-nsfw spaces with nsfw content. You could not enter the Just Chatting or Art tags on Twitch without a slew of topless women and full frontal nudity and pornographic drawings flooding the top of the suggested.
If there were a dedicated site for sexual content or an 18+ section of the website then it's whatever, those things would have decent filtering for people who are looking for that stuff. The problem is that most on the viewer base of twitch are minors and you don't need an adult account to view the explicit material. That is profitting off of giving children access to porn and that is scummy and predatory. And yeah, I think there's a place for nudity. Art studies or nude artistic expression is valid and is more situational. Even in non-artistic circles, Twitch is really uptight about certain creators with any hint of sexuality in their themes. Just look at the multiple times Vtubers were banned for having chest physics on their models or emotes getting restricted because they were "risque". There are lines that get crossed. However, women with their nipples just out of frame and bouncing for bits from 14 year olds or a draw-along stream of a massive humanoid dog penis are not that, i'm sorry lol.

But it should be kept on adult websites with at least the bare minimum of age gating. On Twitch you could see that stuff without an account even. Even UA-cam makes you sign in to see 18+ content to prove you're an adult because there's an expectation that UA-cam is not a porn site, just like Twitch isn't a porn site. It's easily bypassed but at least its enough to pretend to care about maintaining a consistent and healthy atmosphere in the community. The second the sexual stuff was okayed, a ton of smaller artists and streamers jumped ship because they didn't want to be associated with sexual content. Even fucking Twitter does this better by giving you an option to block sexual content from your feed. Whether you liked it or not with Twitch, it was always put to the top and was in your face.

I work in the gaming industry and not only are there more and more people showing up to where I work but, not only those people but, a huge portion of current players have gotten into sports betting that previously weren't.

European here. Gambling places used to be casinos, small or big. Now theres plenty of bars (there are a ton in my country) with sports bets machines, there are "sports bars" with big screens with horses and soccer matches, machines with sports bets and near them, slots and roulettes.
Kids growing getting used to spend 1euro in a combinated bet (you put the results of 3, 4, 5... matches or whatever you want and you can get 30, 50, 60 or more if the odds are against). SO they "only" bet 1 euro but it becomes something they get used to and that they do regularly, then when they are 18 they keep doing it and when they get a job they start betting more.
You also get this slots mecanic in a lot of games (cases, football cards in fifa....). The worst part is that these kind of betting places are growing like mushrooms in the poorer areas, so people with no money to spare are getting more addicted.

I'll have to disagree honestly. Both are equally as bad to me. Gambling addictions lead to manipulative behavior, theft, and hopelessness when all is lost. Porn addictions foster a lot of bad mental issues like chronic depression, social anxiety, and there's a causal link between porn addiction and acts of sexual violence. Both are terrible and puts people in danger, both the addict and the people around them, it just manifests in different ways. Also porn addiction has been growing in comminality and severity with the current internet space, mainly thanks to onlyfans and tiktok making the rounds, so the rarity of both gambling and porn addictions may be closer than we think. (Funny enough the increase in porn addiction in the US coincided with the Alpha Male boom where women are objectified and sexual violence is seen as justified in the man-o-sphere, just something to think about)

@@andy.jehoshaphat I'm in full agreement with you but I'm gonna be slightly more realistic about this: If Twitch isn't gonna ban things like the topless meta and hot tub meta despite the fact they are very clearly sexually explicit (and intentionally so), Twitch needs to *at minimum* put up a toggle or something for NSFW/18+ content with a disclaimer (for legal reasons) and immediately tell their advertisers that if they don't want their ads showing up on streams with those tags, Twitch will prevent those ads from being there.

I would say you could accidentally stumble into adult content. That said, the real solution is to just hide such content from those not logged in or accounts by underage viewers. Ideally keep it to it's own section where it's a blurred thumbnail. Beyond that nothing else really needs to be done beyond enforcing users doing such content that incorrectly label it get in trouble for doing such and get pushed to an adult only stream.

Porn addiction is worse than video game addiction.
Porn addiction leads to false expectations and masturbation addiction which trains the brain in a way that leads to lower chances of finding a significant other (since that need for release is already fulfilled).
That being said, gambling is still worse because it poses more immediate issues.
I like some of Asmon's takes, but not all them, one weird one I heard recently from him was when he pulled up a chatter about fictional cartoons he said - "Which category is more likely to be a pedo? Anime Enjoyers who don't like loli content, or Anime Enjoyers, who do like loli content"? and I was just thinking to myself what is this argument I could just as easily say something stupid like - "Which category of people are more likely to go shoot up a place? Gamers who enjoy games without guns, or Gamers who enjoy games with guns."?
He says he's for people to enjoy things even if he doesn't like them because, he's smart enough to see that if you start enforcing things on people they will start enforcing things back, but then he will go, and say something that completely contradicts that.

I can recommend the Unwanted Twitch Chrome extension. You can click on games, categories or tags you don't want to see anymore. Would probably work if your child doesn't know how to unhide it and turn it back on (as far as I can tell it doesn't have a parental control function yet).
I live in the UK and every other advert (especially during sporting events is for gambling apps) problem here is that it’s a cultural thing, when you grow up here there’s a bookies on every high street, and so much of life in a sporting sense revolves around it. It was one thing I was always kinda impressed by America with, but now they have opened it up they are falling faster and harder than we did it seems

Asmon saying it's intellectually dishonest, meanwhile there's good reasons to separate porn sites from normal content. What if you want to watch at work or school and these streams come up? Also it's disgusting and undermines mostly female creators who choose to respect themselves.
