Great and very helpful. Based on the info in this video I have saved nearly £40 on parts and up to £100 engineer time. My oven was tripping the very sensitive consumer board and after testing the earth connection, I found my element was faulty and Ive ordered a new elemental unit. Thanks
Informative video although annoying meter screen glare as commented. Slight ohms law error. Higher resistance on last element will result in lower current and hence LOWER power. i.e. Less wattage as you then stated. Agree with other comments on using insulation tester, but multimeter will often give a good first indication of an earth fault if you don't have an insulation tester. I didn't know what OL meant either but I know now thanks to a couple of useful comments!
I'd strongly suggest using an insulation tester. Measuring the resistance between live/neutral and earth using a multimeter will not give an accurate test result. If you stressed that element with an insulation resistance test at 500 volts you'd find that the reading you saw at 18Mohm probably drop below the 2 Mohm minimum required for safety.
after removing my cooker element i dropped the spade connector wires down the back so had to remove the back of oven to retrieve them but now i dont know which way round they go. my cooker is a zanussi and the element ony has 2 terminals and i thing the main screwing in bracket acts as teh earth. can the spade terninals be put on either way round please.
Best video on testing an element I have seen.
OL is actualy open loop, thanks for the advice, i should be more well equiped for tommorow now

FYI: O.L means open loop, not over load

Good explanation on the element and earth tripping the RCD / ELCB
Thank you for this, Very helpful. Just saved me a few quid!

Excellent info mate, thank you, have you got to disconnect the existing element to test it.
OL = Open Line
Nice video with lots of examples.
Some say OL = open loop or open label. So is it "open line", "open loop", "open label", or "overload"?
Very clear and to the point. Thank you very helpful. Quick question, what model of Fluke multimeter was that and would you recommend it?
Very good and helpful.
One criticism is the multimeter screen is unreadable due to the glare from the lights.
thought OL meant open line. Not over load
Good video which covers many points. thanks
Would an element where there’s no OL between the terminal and earth trip the RCD?

if you dont have a auto ranging multi meter what range of ohms should you use Thanks
Mega ohms scale
great explanation mate!
Good clear explanation thanks.
great video, helped me alot.
I've replaced my fan.
no heat.
so replaced my element
replaced
still no heat or light.
so I'm thinking thermostat on the dial.
i hear you call ol over load if your going to teach any thing its called open line on a multi meter
Kindly note that your use of "your" should be "you're" as in "you are".
OL means open label, not overload
