    I am a museum collections care specialist who works in conservation and I would LOVE to come to Mapperton to help conserve and rehouse all of the wonderful historical things you have hidden throughout the house. Furniture, tapestries, paintings, and paper/ephemeral archives are my specialty. What a dream!

      I think Mapperton NEEDS a museum collections CARE SPECIALIST like Michelle Jones. Especially one who works in the area of CONSERVATION. Ignorance is so dangerous if people just behave like impatient bulls at the gate and accidently cause fragile old paper to be ripped or precious items to be broken or harmed by human skin touching items when the person is NOT wearing white conservator's gloves.

    • @MichelleJonesKralka
      @MichelleJonesKralka 2 роки тому +8

      @@AnnaAnnaTT from what I have seen, Julie, Luke, and Luke’s parents take the utmost care when engaging with all of the objects and works on paper. You can tell that they absolutely want to conserve the objects inside the manor. They use the proper book spine support when opening historical books, etc.
      There is a divide in conservation and curatorial about wearing white gloves while handling works on paper - some do and some don’t and both are accepted. Wearing white cotton gloves could actually hinder handling pages and you can accidentally tear or crease a page. I always use non-latex gloves that fit my hands very well to handle anything in the conservation studio - but we do have a paper conservator who doesn’t wear gloves at all.
      For most non profit entities in the arts and museum world, volunteers are a crucial part of caring for a collection - which they mentioned in their reply to me that they have wonderful volunteers at Mapperton.
      We are only seeing a small slice of life at Mapperton, please don’t be so harsh and quick to judge.

    Hey Julie and Luke, it is fun getting to see what was left behind by Luke’s ancestors in the drawers of old furniture. Maybe you could start a family tradition. Each generation creates a time capsule in a drawer for future generations to appreciate. Small items, letters, photos. Some things so that they can feel connected to you after you’re gone. Luke’s parents can start it.
    I’m really enjoying this video! Thank you for sharing!

    I’m sure everyone has mentioned by now but with the older antique drawers you lift up as you push back inside…either the wood has expanded over the centuries or the tracks are gone by now… so you just lift up from the front of the drawer and slowly push back… sometimes going lifting up and down… sounds silly and simple but ,y family had its of antiques and I swear that’s how we did it. And I suggest Jules for one, in hopes that Julie will get over her fear of cows! 😍

  • @Nirrrina

    I'd suggest getting a blank notebook. Then as you do a preliminary opening of drawers write down what's inside like if it's the tapestry piece. Or if it's Thomas the tank toys.
    Then you can go back through the notebook to make decisions on what to do with it & where to permanently put things.

    • @celticlass8573
      @celticlass8573 2 роки тому +3

      And then archive the notebook. It would be a neat link for someone to find in a century or more, about the stuff they found from previous centuries, particularly when Julie found the panel from one of the tapestries. If she's able to restore them all during her time at Mapperton, that would be a really interesting bit.

    • @Nirrrina
      @Nirrrina 2 роки тому +2

      @@celticlass8573 That's really good idea to archive it. They could even get one of those instant cameras & snap a photo of things to show what they found as it was found.
      Maybe one day they could even turn some of it into a book to sell in the gift shop. As well as show other things they've found or restored.

    • @celticlass8573
      @celticlass8573 2 роки тому +1

      @@Nirrrina I think it's probably a strange balance for each generation, trying to decide what to archive about their stay at Mapperton. The big stuff is easy, of course archive about building the garden, or repairing the pool, or the re-wilding, but if you think from the perspective of someone in the future, the little things will also be of great interest, as they're an insight into everyday life. So your notebook idea might have things like how Thomas the Tank Engine book was found, a favourite of this child who used to read it under this tree, or winter mitts found in great-grandfather's former gun drawer, or chocolate from an Easter egg hunt hidden 15 years before.

    Julie for those old quills for when they use to write letters & what not take them to be preserved in a shadow box to display them with a letter of the paper that was made in the day. With ribbons iother things to represent how a letter was written in the old days. With young people & the mass media that is ruling there life. This would be a reminder of before cell phones.

Bet they would love a chance to repair some things at Mapperton. I am surprised you guys haven't applied for a grant for the fabric and furniture restoration work. I was watching a historical home show on UA-cam about people restoring old buildings in the UK and they always talk about grants the ones that were able to open their Home or Farm to the public were normally approved much easier than those that didn't. Although you could go with the Old timey American "Barn Raising" method too; maybe reach out to your local restoration folks and see if they will do it for free in exchange for y'all advertising for them on tour pamphlets and as a mention on the channel. I love this channel.

    Julie, to get the drawers in all those antiques to slide easy is to get what we call in the US, canning wax, it's a cube or cake of wax you can melt to use as a sealer when canning jams and such, take the cube, pull out the drawers, run the wax over the edges of the drawers, top bottoms and sides, and glides on the drawers, and any glides inside the body of the chest, anywhere the drawer would meet the inside of the chest... the wax allows the drawers to glide, I use wax at least 2 times a year, because where I live it is very humid and hot in the summer but dryer in the winter, the wood swells and shrinks with the seasons...you will be amazed at how well it works...I just slide the wax about 3 or 4 times over the edges and such, you also with that old furniture to to shut the drawers, stand exactly in front of the drawer, and use equal pressure on the ends to help the drawer stay straight while you are pushing gently, gently gently into the chest...I bout had a heart attack girl when you were trying to put that drawer back into that chest under the tapestry! I'm frankly surprised you didn't hear me scream all the way from Arkansas girl!!! I would have been in every piece there one month after I moved there looking and finding all the treasures...the problem is that place is full of all kinds of treasures! it is hard to pick a spot and search!!!

    In the barn where you store the extra furniture, etc. Check any drawers that might be out there. Cool this makes me want to go explore too. Thanks for sharing

    This is so fabulous! I’m such a history buff I couldn’t sleep not knowing what’s in my drawers! Oh my goodness Julie! How are you sane😂

    Ok, I’m available to come explore. Anytime. Really. This is like an archeological dig. I’ll work for food and a roof. Oh, and warmth in the winter.

    Are these cattle related to the white cattle at Cadzow outside Lanark? I think that the Duke of Hamilton took some through to East Lothian, when they purchased Lennoxlove, after Hamilton Palace was demolished due to mining subsidence in 1920!

    I just came across your wonderful You-Tube channels and I am sort of obsessed now! It’s fun and interesting getting a glimpse into your lives! I really can’t wait to visit the UK one day. I am from Southern California in the USA.

    I know I keep saying this, but THIS episode has to be my favorite! Besides being SO excited about looking in drawers, I’d love to help name the heifers! My grandmother had 10 children, all of them with names beginning with the letter “J”! May I suggest my aunts’ names for namesakes: Joan, Joyce, Jacqueline, Judith, Jessica or Janet! Cheers, from Niagara Falls, NY💜

    Elizabeth, Alberta and Julie! Elizabeth for the queen on her Jubilee and Alberta and Julie for the two crazy Americans to take on the Montagus.

    Luke was right, those were molars and your relative probably broke one on the almonds. The bug collection, donate to the nearest school. You might need a dehumidifier in your rooms since the walls are cold it stands to reason why some of the draw's are sticking.

    Julie, you can put some talk powder in the drawers what's it called, the thing that slides the box bit inside. Helps with the opening and closing. Though I'm not sure if restaurers agree with me. lol

    Oh no, hope the drawer opens up again?!
    ""The drawing room is where one with the drawers"' Love it, Luke. Great, way of putting it. o very exciting it has to be to go over all of the treasures found! Changes over the many years etc. Just love it.
    Both of you are such fun!
    Luke is such a jewel of information and remembers so many things from his years growing up with the family. Love to hear what he has to say. Julie worries alot and she is like me and wants everything done now. I do too, but found that it does not happen often as quickly as I want. It is hard.
    Julie that was the most lovely tapestry you found!! In such perfect condition. Just love it. One just never knows. I feel terrible Julie and undertand how you all feel. I would love to help with thigns, as it wil be so lovely once all refurbished! Beign part of it all would be nice. It can feel overwhelming, am sure. It wil get done I truly do beleive. I think only you and Luke maybe chan go through the drawers unless someone can write down exactly what they find, * If they know as maybe soem thigns only Luke wil remember? Also you are qquick to notice thigns" So I am not sure but maybe they can bu it would need to be kept track of very well. (candies thrown out. ) LOL

    So much fun looking at drawers and spending part of your day at Mapperton! I would like to submit these names for the cows: Jacqueline, Joyce and Julie. I enjoyed the cows. Farming is an important part of the economy.
