  • This video is a tutorial of the suspending shrimp fly. It's a great pattern for redfish, snook, tripletail, and baby tarpon
This pattern can be tied in a myriad of colors, but the tan and brown colors are my favorites. For dark water and in the everglades, root beer is a great color. This is a great pattern to practice with deer hair. It suspends, hence the name, and stays upright. You may think that with the bead chain, it would flip, but the deer hair floats and keeps it riding upright. If you have trouble with it flipping, either use a thicker gauge hook or use less deer hair. This fly really shines in two scenarios. The first is thick grass with tailing redfish. With a good weed guard, this fly will glide right through thick turtlegrass without hanging up, just like a fleeing shrimp. Redfish hammer this fly in that scenario. The second is backcountry areas with dark water around mangroves like in the everglades. There, I think the snook, redfish, and tarpon mistake this fly for a finger mullet. It has a thick profile and moves some serious water, just like a finger mullet. Give the suspending shrimp a try today.

Nice, y’all should keep a small fish tank in the shop and plop the flies in there after tied so we can see how they act when they get wet. Think it could add some uniqueness to these tying vids

Yeah, beautiful fly, I like it. Gonna tie that one for my box. And agreed on the water demonstration rig. Of those I have seen on other channels, the ones I like the most are those that have a water pump with flowing water. That really shows the dynamic swimming action of the fly. You would be surprised how realistic some of the simplest materials wave around in the water. If anything else, such a rig is a great way to learn how your materials actually behave in the water. Heck, I'm starting to talk myself into building one for me.

which hook has a bigger hook gap? XS 410 or XS 420?

I mean, they’re super close. Maybe a pinch larger on the XS 420, but the point bends in some on that hook, whereas the XS 410 is more parallel with the shank
