  • The Badgertail Shrimp is an incredible shrimp fly pattern, especially for the Tampa Bay Area. It's a simple pattern that even a beginner can tie with loads of action that will fool Snook, Trout, Redfish, Triple Tail, Cobia and all sorts of other inshore species. It mimics a shrimp or small baitfish, which is great too.

    Great fly. This fly was featured on the back page of Fly Tyer magazine. The video clears up the tying technique. I'm tying some for my box for use this winter in Tampa Bay. Usually a size 6 hook is used on the Tampa Bay flats. Thanks for the video.

    Love simple flies. Great tips on eye placement and leg placement. Ordered supplies to tie this shrimp. Thanks.

    Nice fly man, I’ll try to tie a few this weekend. I’m a little skeptical if weed guards work on flies, I’ve never fished or tied one to try it but it seems kinda wimpy. What’s your experience with the guards?

      The key to a solid weedguard is using hard monofilament. It is stiff enough to bounce the fly through grass and other pieces of bottom it might get hung up on. It also really helps if you are blindcasting the fly near mangrove trees or docks as you can often wiggle it out if you cast too far or too close to the structure.
      I personally prefer a single strand of 25 pound hard mono but you can experiment with 12lb all the way up to 40 or even stiff wire depending on where you're fishing. You can also double up the strands of the weedguard to get added resistance.
      Thanks for watching!

      Awesome, I’ll give it a shot! 2 more questions, what were you doing with the needle nose, flattening the mono to get a better bite with the thread? Also I was looking at the recipe for the fly to order everything and the website doesn’t say how many hooks come in the bag, can you clarify how many? Cheers from the east coast 🍻 (New Smyrna). Hope y’all are well after Ian.

      @@michaelbacile8439 You got it with the pliers. A pack of xs410s has 20 hooks in it.

    nice pattern. I'd recommend zooming in a little more on the fly to make for a better video

    What size hook are you tying this in, I tied sparse on a size 2 and even used large bead chain and still will not ride hook point up

  • @billk4019
    @billk4019 Рік тому +1

    Does that fly actually ride hook point up with that thick hook and small light weight bead chain eyes?

    • @tailwaterflyshop
      @tailwaterflyshop  Рік тому

      If tied to thick, it will not. But if you keep it pretty sparse, it flips hook point up with the bead chain very easily

    Is the weight of the bead chain enough roll this fly to run point up?

    • @tailwaterflyshop
      @tailwaterflyshop  9 місяців тому

      With this hook and beach chain combo, yes it does ride hook point up. As long as you tie it fairly sparse

      I'm going to guess size 6 based on the three sizes you can get the hooks in.
