It looks more impressive to play with all downstrokes because your hand is just flying off the handle. That's why they do this...they could easily play all of this easier with alternative picking.

I saw this MOP tour! April, 1986. Nassau Coliseum on Long Island NY. Cliff was alive & well! And it's not a myth, they really did make Ozzy look weak! Metallica blew them off the stage. Metallica was still a 'warm-up' act at this time. I wasn't that familiar with them at this point. But seeing this live in 1986 blew my ears and eyes away! I was impressed. My first time seeing them! And that was true for a lot of people that night. After this tour.....Metallica was at a higher level from when they started the tour. And till this day, James and Lars and Kirk are very very thankful to Ozzy. Because he invited them onto the tour and gave them tons of exposure. Ozzy was touring for that Ultimate Sin album at the time. Shot in the Dark was Ozzy's big hit song on that record. Peace.

This is the band that took me for a lifetime. I was a kid finding music and Metallica had an impact on my life because of those times for the band and my age. Back in the day it was all glam rock and the typical heavy metal bands.... then there was Metallica who had a sound and songs like no other band. No showboating, old dirty shoes, ripped jeans, no hairspray, not singing about women, and song intros that were so fkg great hearing the first time. Those are the things I remember about Metallica that grabbed me early on while discovering so much in my life.... it was the coolest fucking thing for a 12 yr old kid to discover. Ive been a die hard since 85.

James has always been super skillful when it comes to down picking to the point where it’s not even comfortable or even attainable for those who aren’t very practiced in using that technique.
I seen metallica in 86 opening for Ozzy, these guys were on fire,.. i wasn't a fan until a few years later,.. but after many years i realized i got to see the original lineup,.. im surprised james dont have a helluva case of arthritis in that down picking hand !!.lol
There is practice speed and then there is show speed. We always get excited when we get on stage and start playing faster. Plus booger sugar is an amazing helping tool!

The shows right after Jason joined after cliffs death are untouchable. They were playing at a whole other level. It's 100% clear the anger they were feeling after what happened to cliff. The aggression of those shows is off the charts.

I saw the ride the lightning and master of puppets concerts and hes that is how it was. Down picking craziness. Most people would just alternate but not James.
