Go back 50 years from the time of Elvis and you will never hear anything approaching what Elvis brought to the World. It is now more than 50 years since the majority of his good songs and yet there is no one who can approach the one time musical phenomenon that was Elvis. The one and only King of rock and roll. He would be 86 years old now. You can also thank composer Walter Earl Brown for the lyrics and arrangement of this song. He passed away in 2008 at 79. He was the musical genius who gave this song to Elvis and Elvis gave it to the World. Fifty three years later it still hits you with a hammer. I am 77 and it still brings me to tears. If you want to hear another powerhouse song from Elvis listen to Tomorrow Never comes from 1970. It will knock you out! Personally, I was a combat soldier in Vietnam when this show aired in 1968. I had to watch it later.

His tribute to MLK. He defied his manager who wanted him to end this tv special with a Christmas song. He would be so sad to know this is still so relevant today. RIP Elvis.

It was Elvis’ tearful response to Bobby Kennedy’s assassination that flashed across the tv while the rehearsals was in full swing. Elvis stopped the rehearsal and was glued to the tv screen while the assassination story unfolded, all the while crying, questioning “why”, why MLK lost his life to a bullet only months earlier. It was Elvis’ tearful response and his outpouring of concern that was the basis for the lyrics of this powerful song. In a way they were his lyrics .... that is why his delivery was so heartfekt.

      Very well said, Sally!
The song was written as a reaction to MLK`s assassination but while Elvis was recording it RFK was assassinated which was just too much to bear.

HE FIRST DID THE ON THE STSGE IN THE LEATHER SUIT TAPPING STARTED IN JUNE 1968. THEN ROBERT KENNEDY WAS KILLED. SO HE
RECORDED AGAIN AFTER THE TO GIVE MORE RESPECT WITH
A SUIT ON AND HONERED BOTH MEN.💞💞💞

@@barbaramarkland7441 Actually that is not correct. "By June 3, Elvis returned to Hollywood to start the rehearsals that would last for two weeks." It was during this rehearsal period, on 6 June, that Robert Kennedy was assassinated. It was in DIRECT RESPONSE to Elvis' very emotional reaction to the RK's assassination, so soon after MLK's,and his overall despair at the state of the world, that If I Can Dream was written. "For the show's closer, Binder decided to replace the spoken statement with a song. He instructed Goldenberg and lyricist Walter Earl Brown to write a song that reflected Presley and his beliefs, and Brown wrote "If I Can Dream" that same night." This happened after 29 June 1969. Elvis lipped synced his vocals in the black leather version. Only his white suit version was recorded live but without an audience.

Elvis presley possessed a chameleon voice that constantly morphed, evolved and changed in a very very brief life.
Elvis's soul depth and diversity were utterly remarkable.
Elvis was an iconic artist, the likes of which may never be seen again.

Totally moving! No one Like Him! Joe Esposito said this was done at 3Am, most bare set, and Elvis was totally broken up after thinking about the Kennedy, MLK deaths. Love it!!

This was the final song of the night in this Comeback Special. It was said by one of his close associates that when he closed the song, obviously exhausted and emotionally spent from it, he went back stage, lost his composure, and cried uncontrollably for a while.

This TV Special was aired in December'68. He should sing a christmas song at the end of the show.
But after the assasinations of MLK and RFK, they decided to do a tribute song for both. .
The composer Mac Davis did a great job.
Within a few "minutes" he wrote a song based on the great speech of MLK " I have a dream".
He sang it only on time life. This was his first and last life performance he ever did. I think his performance was pure emotion and one of the most overwhelming ever!
And i guess we all thinking the same. This song is still so relevant today that we should ask ourselves
    ..................why???
Great reaction, thank you my friend ☮ ☯️
    Nice voice by the way!!!

Mac Davis wrote "In The Ghetto" not "If I Can Dream", It was written By Earl Brown who after hearing that Elvis wanted to sing a Song that expressed the message of MLK's I Have A Dream Speech to close the 68 Comeback Special, wrote this master piece that Elvis knocked out of the park.

Blood alone moves the wheels of history! Have you ever asked yourselves in an hour of meditation, which everyone finds during the day,how long we have been striving for greatness? Not only the years we've been at war, the war of work, but from the moment as a child when we realized that the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle. A never-ending fight. I say to you, and you will understand that it is a privilege to fight!

Just as a matter of interest. This song was written overnight during Elvis’ rehearsal for his 1968 TV Special by Earl Brown. 1968! Leonard Cohen composed Hallelujah in 1984. I wonder, did Cohen “borrow” the chord progression from If I Can Dream? Given the timing it certainly can NOT be the other way around. I love your music knowledge and I hope to kearn more from you as you do more Elvis reactions. I am a serious Elvis researcher, soending 5-6 hours a day on it.

Little known fact - the man who designed Elvis' outfits added the red kerchief to this outfit after he listened to the news about how many people had died that week in the war. He told Elvis what it stood for (it was the color of the blood of the people who died) and Elvis started to cry and said he couldn't talk about it, it just hurt too much. We could use that kind of heart in more of todays people. I do wonder what Elvis would say about all the hate talk today by politicians who just want to pander to others who just want to hate and to the military and police personel who attack our capital and murder in the name of a dictator wannabe. Okay getting off my soapbox now.

The answer my people is in the Lord. Unfortunately a lot of us don't want to see it or just want to walk away from that answer. If you go to man you won't find it this is why we're in this situation the song was really about seeking God and hoping for a God but a lot of people just don't want to listen to it and so this is why destruction will still come upon us. So it is written: So shall it be done
