There is something extraordinary in his playing. A deep understanding of the piece. A great respect for the beauty hidden in the music and the responsibility to perform to the utmost level. Oh, this man was a real genius.
One of the very best...sadly now forgotten by the mainstream. His vibrato was very fast which is not to everyone's taste. But his core sound was stupendous and individual. Check out the bow control and beautiful sound at 2.40. Lovely stuff. Also see his Sibelius recording (UA-cam)...probably the most passionate captured on tape.
I keep coming back to this wonderful performance. The tone of the Strad. is amazing and the technique is mesmerising. The double stopping is better than Menhuin's. I hope to visit his grave south of Paris this year to pay my gratitude for his talented life, however too short.
One of the all time greats. Sadly declined with alcoholism and depression until his suicide. Yes a very quick vibrato and lots of sliding, but what a stupendous sound, as the comment below observes: very luminous sound at the top and deep and dark on the G string. Sometimes over attacked with the bow but a fabulous sense of line and phrasing. Don't know why he isn't considered to be up there with the conventionally regarded stars of the past. He should be.
Mr. Stardust, I have never forgotten Christian Ferras since I bought the DGG recordings of Sibelius, Brahms and Tchaikovsky concertos in 70s. He is still one of the very best, indeed!
I only now discovered Ferras after reading about his performance of the Sibelius (which I also heard, and loved.) Many thanks for this upload, this is gorgeous playing.
@fingerhorn4 some hope for us: things are changing. an environment like UA-cam is not just another technology, but a deep change in collective awareness. Here we can see and hear them again and again, and gradually some of the best and forgotten emerge to the top. Good public relations can less and less distort our autonomous "objective" minds. It's like a collective psychoanalysis of a sort, through which hidden treasures of our past experiences and knowledge are coming to light.
is the violinist who commited suicide? i think i read it somewhere...this is fantastic, such a rich tone on the low notes, but a bright ringing tone on the high ones...his recording of the bach double concerto with menuhin is also fantastic.

The best After jascha heifetz
Nicht wahr? Er war einer der Größten, man hat ihn leider vergessen...
Hey that's good. Can you post Tchaikovsky Concerto as a video file or something?
Would be great.
Thanks
Voici une vidéo où on voit et entend parler Christian Ferras ua-cam.com/video/XcinrjJLVV4/v-deo.html
where did you read about that performance?
Is it possible to improve on Ferras and Ginete Neveu? Very doubtful.
Y a t il un meilleur artist?
hihi ;)
