- Featuring two extraordinarily talented vocalists who would both go on to have mega-successful solo careers, Genesis was at one time one of the biggest bands on the planet. Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel are true rock icons, and both brought something truly special to Genesis, which evolved considerably between forming in 1967 and disbanding in 2000. After Gabriel and Collins left the group, Genesis added a third lead singer to its lineup for a single album - one of many little-known pieces of trivia about this truly unique rock band. Curious about the evolution of the band behind hit singles like "Invisible Touch" and "I Can't Dance"? This is the untold truth of Genesis.

What is your favorite Genesis album?
Probably Abacab
Lamb Lies Down
Wind and Wuthering
Foxtrot.
Calling All Stations
Genesis has one of the most underrated discographies in music. Almost all of their albums are phenomenal.
Underrated! What the hell are you on . Your talking nonsense.
Not even close to being underrated.
Genesis are better described as misunderstood by the general public, not under rated.
Well people should appreciate And then there were three songs more, great stuff
I’m sorry. But Duke and Abacab are utterly horrendous albums. It’s not music.
"Afterglow" speaks to my heart like no other tune by Genesis. I've requested that tune be played at my send-off. "Your Own Special Way" is my second-favorite by the stellar band (Genesis). Thank you, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and bandmates. All of you are true innovators and world-class musicians.
Genesis will always be my #1 favorite band!
Difficult to like a band they split into two fractions.. I went with Peter & later Steve , have never regretted it.
@@thekitowl I became a Phil Collins fan and then got into Genesis between 2013-2014
me too
At 6:00 I guess we are supposed to think that Peter Gabriel appeared dressed as Tony Levin.
I love Tony Levin. He looks the exact same from 40 years ago to now!
No shit haha!! I was like, wait?
Never knew ole Petey had a "Tony Levin" costume??I'll have to look for that this Halloween lol!!🍻✌
Peter Gabriel made Genesis look more like a Halloween band.
Right. I was thinking that's not Pete in costume.
A fantastic band. I wish I would've been able to see live shows back then. They will always be my number 1!
👍🏿
I bought ‘calling all stations’ and quite enjoyed it.
It is pretty good, underrated.
Meh, it was ok but left me really underwhelmed. The songs just weren’t memorable and Collins voice and drumming were greatly missed.
Parts of it sound very Genesis-y, but some of the outtakes should have been on the album. Anything Now and Phret are great songs.
@@coolcat6303 I agree. Replacing a singer after five years of success, erm… ok, but replacing a drummer after twenty years of global dominance. Nope.
@@rk41gator no, it's not. The arrogance of Banks and Rutherford. The tour for that was an absolute disaster. And embarrassing.
Seen this video in my recommended throughout the whole week, and only had time to watch it now. But what an icon Genesis is, an extremely Underated band. They'll never be anything alike. Long live Legends. 💙👑
👍🏿
I dont care for the collins era, but as a prog band, they were one of the all time greats. It is incredible to think that 20 year olds wrote and performed Suppers Ready.
I have literally thousands of albums, and Genesis are in my top 5 bands. Regarding Peter vs. Phil, I'm a huge fan of both eras. Having a love for prog shouldn't keep you from being able to enjoy well crafted pop.
I had an absolute blast at their concert. I did the "I Can't Dance" dance up and down the stairs as if I was the only one at the venue.
I love Genesis and I think their music is very well composed. Phil is an amazing drummer and a very neat guy. The whole band is phenomenal
Phil Collins is still one of my top 10 favorite drummers of all time..
His drumming is so musical. Everything he played made the song better. His jazz/fusion stuff is amazing with Brand X.
I wish Ray got more of a chance to succeed in the band
He's had a really strong solo career. I think the band owed him a shot at a second album to be honest. He was actually contracted for two and he was clear from the start he wasn't interested in coming on board as just a session singer.
With him writing with the band from the start, I think they could have got a little more back into their proggy roots, as Wilson always said he was more of a fan of the Gabriel era side.
Shame, Mike was ultimately more interested in pursuing the Mechanics than essentially restarting Genesis. In a way I understand but I think we lost out on what could have been a golden third act for the band. Ah well.
@@avenginglettuce No doubt. The second album would've been better. I thought Ray was a perfect fit for the more proggy reincarnation of Genesis. His raspier voice reminded me a lot of Peter's. His solo career is great and he keeps the Genesis spirit alive
@@avenginglettuce Ray is usually performing Phil`s songs during his Genesis-related tours.
Same here. I was really hoping to see a new era of Genesis blossom into something good. I wanted to give them a chance on this.
I would've given him a chance for damn sure.
Because I’m such a Genesis nerd, I knew all of these facts 😬
but they did a great job putting it all together in a nice round package.
@@rk41gator very much so! Any video talking about Genesis is a good video :) although bit sad they didn’t mention Daryl Stuemer in The Last Domino tour
hmmmm was he an actor turned drummer as stated in the beginning?
@@Vince-lq3ve he was always a drummer but he stopped being an actor as a kid cos he got to old to play The Artful Dodger
@@Vince-lq3ve Yes, while Peter, Tony, Mike and Ant were in 'public' school (private, for us Americans), Phil was in Drama school where he met his first wife. So he kinda did both at the same time. But drumming was his first love.
Why did you show a picture of Chapman Stick player Tony Levin while talking about Gabriel?
I enjoyed the vid but - 'the untold truth of Genesis', really? I hope someone can point me towards the untold bit because I've heard all of this before. There should be a big shout out to the two long time touring musicians, Daryl Steurmer & Chester Thompson who were with post Gabriel & Hackett for decades.
Sainte Trinité : Phil , Tony and Mike. God save the Phil.
My Generation was Genesis ❤
What generation ? The '70's hippies one or the brain dead '80's one .
Speaking of My Generation, did you know that Phil Collins almost became a drummer for the Who after his first marriage ended in divorce? Unfortunately, you know the deal. Kenny took over the role and Phil started writing 100 songs dueling Genesis and a solo career.
@@meyerj75 and to add on to that, Kenney Jones is friends with Mike Rutherford iirc
There is nothing untold truth in this documentary. Just facts every Genesis Fan knows.
And Genesis fans know a lot more that wasn't told in this video! ;-)
I don't like these overrating themselves titles
In the 80s you couldn't swing a dead cat with out hitting a Genesis or Phil Collins song
True but, as a cat myself, I’d prefer you not harm or swing a cat.👍
Mike and the Mechanics were pretty ubiquitous as well.
Take me back... Take take me home!
LOL! True
Why were you swinging around dead cats?
Steve Hackett , how can you miss out a major player in the band , disgraceful.
I really recommend you listen to their greatest hits compilation, a double CD when released. It's a good selection that could lead to you checking out their albums. 🎶❤️
Thank you very much. I really did not.know their history. But it was a hell of a run. Great music memories
No mention at all of Steve Hackett. Was audition in Mike Rutherfords parents house ?.
There's always been a sticky relationship with them and Hackett. I don’t know if they ever really buried the hatchet
@@scottburns2600 I personally think that they havn't - from what I read there was personality clash with Steve and (to this day a very uptight) Tony. . Maybe that is THE UNTOLD TRUTH OF GENESIS.
Steve is the only member with any crediblity . The others sold out years ago .
@@clouddog2393 You forgot Anthony Phillips. Steve Hackett and him always stayed true to the Prog and Classical music. Phillips even more so. He still makes music in the vein of the Trespass era.
@@clouddog2393 Except he's not a member. Lol.
Seeing Genesis live when I was finally allowed to go to concerts at 18 in 2007 or 8 changed my whole concept of what I thought I would like about live music. Seeing the guys have so much chemistry together and just fluidly jam is definitely why I like watching jam bands and artists in general that use live instruments and full sounding "jam" type breaks. My Dad and I (the reason I was exposed to Genesis and Phil for my whole life) sat 5th row and it's still my favorite concert to this day, and I've experienced hundreds. Some songs that they played I didn't even know before the concert but, made such a lasting impact on me that when I hear them now I have flashbacks, like Tonight Tonight Tonight. It was also absolutely epic to see em do the I Can't Dance dance. Come on!!! That's the shit! haha One of my favorite songs growing up. Also seeing Phil drum on that wild setup was very cool. Epic band, epic legacy, such talent among each member and fucking Phil dude, ya know? haha I hope they're very happy with their legacy. We appreciate them sharing it with us
Phil is amazing love his voice and lots of great songs. We share the same birthday 🎉
So do I 30th Jan.
I love these guys so much!
Favorite Genesis album..
The one that introduced me to Genesis..
ABACAB.. next to the LAMB LIES DOWN IN Broadway and DUKE..
Runner up INVISIBLE TOUCH.
We still live in a "Land Of Confusion" . PLAY LOUD
If you,re listening to the crap that Genesis now play most definitley . Don,t play loud just turn it off .
@@clouddog2393 Yes, They say They can't dance ,but they can suck.
The music video was an inspiration for Sid & Marty Krofft's D.C. Follies.
@@clouddog2393 Stop complaining about the pop era and go do something productive with your life. Trust me, it’s so much better than thinking you’re some sort of genius music critic
Good job on putting this together. Wrapping up such an long and varied career is a challenge, but this is concise and warmly presented. Just wish it had more of their music as a backdrop.
A catalogue of wonderful prog music . . .
I liked them in the old days. Saw the "Invisible Touch " tour in Orlando. They just didn't do it for me after that. Went to see Phil Collins a few years later in Orlando and after 3 songs he stopped the show.
Mike + The Mechanics? They were big for a minute (Mike Rutherford's band) big hit singles in the mid to late 80's you had every member (sans Banks) and former member (Gabriel/Collins/Rutherford and Hackett (as GTR) with big top 40 songs, crazy.
Supper Ready favorite song. Seconds Out favorite live album and studio album I like them all. Tony Banks favorite member of the band.
The early 70’s prog genesis was just *chefs kiss*
My favorite group ever!! Phil Collins is amazing, as a singer and was an awesome drummer, one of the best, until surgery. Phil Collins is my pretend boyfriend! 🥰
I agree! Phil Collins is spectacular! Very handsome too 💕
@@SknndMtlOfficial , my heart breaks at how frail he looks as of late. Still sounds as good as he did back in the late 70's and 80's.
@@leesashriber5097 Me too its so unfortunate - especially now that they've permanently stopped touring. He's still got it though! Sounds great as always indeed.
You start this doc out from the very roots and I thought it was going to be good and thorough. I was wrong. Leaving Steve Hackett's work with Genesis out of this video is either amateurish or done on purpose. His contribution to 6 amazing Genesis albums is remarkable. I understand the title of the video, but...... come on! Sorry about my rant but it is a continued theme for many writers/video docs regarding Steve. I just don't get it.
Great video, very informative & most of it factually correct. Sorry, one thing wrong. Peter didn't just abruptly leave Genesis though. He told the other members prior to the Lamb Tour in 1974/75 he was leaving after all the live shows in Europe & the US. Just saying, of course. 🙂🙂
Trespass 70
Nursery Cryme 71

Oh Lord, I'M THERE, third row... 11:14
This wasn’t “Untold” truth about Genesis. Everything here is well documented if you’re a Genesis fan. It is very much told.
Peter Gabriel was in the audience for the very last o2 concert.
Love Genesis! To answer your question, I knew after Phil Collins left Genesis, he was replaced.
The weird thing about Genesis and Phil Collins solo career..
If you look at the lyrics off the albums face value and abacab..
And compare it to Phil Collins divorce at the time...
You can see into his psyche.. at the time..
Because it's definitely written in the lyrics on both albums..
In the air tonight isn't about watching someone drown..
Like any creepypasta will say..
Or lame conspiracy theorists..
It's about his marriage drowning...
And maybe suspecting his wife cheating?
Seriously those two albums are very dark.. with inner narrative...
About a impending divorce..
And both albums.
FACE VALUE and ABACAB was written and produced at the same time..
And release around the same time as well..
And I think bad divorce motif going on..
Actually Duke was a way more about divorce than Abacab. Duke was exactly Phil`s self-projection all the way. Albert was Phil`s alter ego those days.
I don't notice that.
but I have to relisten to Duke..
What is the "Untold" part of this? All of this has been told and is well known.
peter gabriel 😍😍😍😍
Actually I think a lot of people including myself got sick of hearing Phil's voice by the end of the 1980s
No love for Mike & The Mechanics? Rutherford's popular 2nd band?
Or if you really want to go for the "untold" part, what about Phil's time working with Brand X? I bet only diehard fans know about that.
So we begin on the 100 millionth album sold on the 40 th year it’s Time to rest
Looking back at Calling All Stations you can see all the mistakes (mainly songwriting and direction or lack their of)
They were the best when PG sang and PC was at the drum kit.
Surely you can't overlook 'Ripples', 'Afterglow', 'Blood on the rooftops' etc. PC was also a brilliant singer. This from possibly the worlds biggest PG fan! (When I lived in the general area I used to divert past Real World Studios just to pay homage 🤣)
Actually is Exodous
What is 'untold' about this video ?
Wtf - he's not P. Gabriel @6:02
Genesis on Grunge, nice! Next Madonna
All this truth (and much more besides)...has already been thoroughly and extensively "told" I'm afraid, which kind of invalidates the title does it not? Also, some of this truth just obviated itself to those old enough to remember, and didn't need to be told. It's not like these things were in any way being kept secret!!
This isn't anything new. This has been told many times before.
Not even one mention of Steve Hackett except for GTR. That's a terrible shame.
This truth is pretty much told.
they were in the bible
Early years only for me please. Duke lost me big-time.
Odd, Duke is a fantastic album in my opinion. Just cuz it had Misunderstanding on it doesn't mean the rest is trash. Did you throw out Selling England because it had More Fool Me on it? Or And Then There were Three because of Follow You Follow Me? There are some very strong prog style songs on it and fantastic drumming. It's really quite brilliant. Actually quite a few of their later albums has some gems on them -nobody has to listen to every song.
And the untold truth is ?
And what is the unknown truth cz I know all of this.
It's called "Clickbait" 😂
I hate when a millennial writes about something he knows nothing about.
Thank you! This is one of the few sensible comments here. Had a lot of BS to wade through to get to your comment. Thanks again.
" Weird Prog band"?
Actor turned Drummer??? Phil was a drummer at three years old.
What is the truth that has never been told here?
Phil should train himself up and get fit before he makes some tour. Its just the heavy drinking and aftermath of it why he performed sitting. What a shame.
Don't need background music. It's irritating
I agree.
Unlike ELP and Yes, Genesis is one of those progressive rock bands that's more easy to listen to, just a lighter version of King Crimson.
90125 by yes is quite easy getting into imo

Once Steve Hackett left, that was pretty much the end of their creativity. Genesis became more of a pop band.
Exactly . From a great prog band to the crap they are now . At least Steve,s keeping their music and legacy alive .
Since Hackett barely wrote anything, that's not really true. "And Then There were 3..." wasn't a pop album. "Duke" wasn't a pop album. Most Genesis fans say "Abacab" wasn't a pop album.
Steve Hackett's reason for leaving: "I didn't want to paint the whole picture without painting part of the picture."
Aw rubbish. There was plenty of creativity after Hackett & Gabriel left. You guys just got used to a particular sound and refused to accept anything else after that. And even though the band went Pop, they still did Prog songs on every album. Several amazing ones too.
I guess Cul-De-Sac and Burning Rope are not creative songs then.
Peters appearence
Batwing
Lawnmower
Britainia
Slipperman
Rael
A lot of us know the history well. This report sucks overall missing most of the pertinent history. No mention of Hackett in the early days.
This "truth" ain't untold at all...
Congratulations.... you were able to tell the Genesis story without mentioning Steve Hackett joining the band in 1971 and then leaving in 1977. You spoke more about Ray Wilson, that did only a single album with Genesis, than about Steve Hackett that played guitar and arranged the music on 7 studio and 2 live albums (2 of which were double albums) of the band. You mentioned him briefly only for his GTR album with Steve Howe. Yet in almost every picture that you show referring to the Genesis 1971-1977 era, Steve Hackett is (obviously) present. You let out important facts while spendibg time for negligible ones so I'm sorry to say that you did a poor job.
Nothing mysterious about Ray Wilson, an accomplished singer/songwriter in his own right. Americans, god's gift you music...not
Phil Collins looks like fucking Benjamin Button now.
Just another Colonel K of Danger Mouse.
Untold ? Which part is untold ? tell me ......obvious clickbait .
The only thing on there I'd never heard about was the lawsuit. Thats pretty creepy of a multi millionaire going after money like that, since its his own accounting teams fault. If you get royalties for playing on somebody album, they are the ones who are going to have the information on sales, so there's no way of knowing what your royalties should be when getting a cheque. So apparantly now you are supposed to keep most of the money in the bank just on the off chance the idiots paying you made a mistake. Thats pretty creepy and certainly makes the 'working class working man' routine look pretty badly on Phil. I wouldn't want to meet those guys in a recording studio after, it probably cost as much for the court case as they owed. And for a guy THAT rich, well, I'm a little less fond of him now.
All bands act like this if they hit the big time, something changes in them tragically. Chris Squire became very money hungry at the end. Chasing the dollars like he needed them.
Possibly because it would open him up to being sued by other touring members who did get paid correctly, wanting the same uncontracted terms. There may also be other considerations like being accused of tax avoidance, etc.
@@Onyxmoon Good points. I think a little more highly of him again, but the jurisprudence aspect of it is pretty crazy. Every time I get a paycheque am I supposed to save the money in case the idiots who paid me made a mistake?
That was my first reaction, but then I thought...this ain't $6.00 It's $345,000 -yikes! So how did that conversation go? Phil's Accounting Firm: "Um, we paid you $345,000 too much by mistake" Pheonix Horns: "go f$%^ yourself". So did Phil sue or did the accounting firm sue? Imagine the accounting firm going to Phil: "we made an error and we think you should pay for it" Phil: "Go f$%^ yourself" So I've taken Phil off the hook with this one.
This is common knowledge and not "untold"
When Steve Hackett left, the creative genius of Genesis was done
That's a stretch. No disrespect to Steve but they they rarely used any of his ideas -that's why he left. He did get to add to the songs where allowed and it was definitely effective but he didn't create. Most of the songs started from Tony Banks (that miserable but talented keyboard player). from there the rest added their magic.
All due respect to SH, I do not agree. ATTWT is a fantastic album.
@@Vince-lq3ve A lot of his later ideas were rejected yes, but that doesn't mean he didn't still didn't contribute a fair bit. He just wanted more than they (well.. Tony) would allow him. I understand the final straw came when he wanted to record another solo album after Trick of the tail which Tony and Mike refused. In hindsight, that does seem a little unfair given that both Mike and Tony did solo albums after ATTWT, and Phil ...??! Well that's another story.
Phil: Hey Mike and Tony, do you think I would would be allowed to put out a solo album once Duke has been released?
Mike and Tony: Knock yourself out Phil! In fact, why not make several solo albums, earn an absolute fortune, become a household name and completely outshine Genesis from a commercial perspective in the process.
"Weird" progressive rock band, Dude you know what you are talking about? This is THE prog band ever. Tony Banks, I love his music but he seems to never have any fun, he looks very stuck up, upper stiff lip, the complete opposite of Peter and definitely Phil.
I agree that Tony looks grumpy alot but I really don’t think he has an attitude problem. He’s just a really serious guy is all.
@@coolcat6303 Love the band but Tony is desperate for recognition on any interview that you watch him. But he is a brilliant songwriter.

Credits due. Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips always stayed true to the Prog and Classical music. Phillips even more so. He still makes music in the vein of the Trespass-era. The rest makes bland and boring music.
If that last part were really true, how do you explain Genesis’ overwhelming success in the post Gabriel era? Nothing wrong with Prog but the band needed to change to stay relevant and survive.
