A very underrated song in my opinion.
Hi Jan
How are you doing?
As the son of a railway man, this song has particular resonance, and the passion Phil puts into the vocal never ceases to amaze me, always brings a tear to my eye...
Lyrics to this Masterpiece: 💙👑
Leaving my family behind me
Not knowing what lay ahead
Waving goodbye, as I left them in tears
Remembering all we'd said
I looked to the sky, I offered my prayers
I asked Him for guidance and strength
But the simple beliefs of a simple man
Lay in His hands, and on my head
My head
I gave everything that they wanted
But still they wanted more
We sweat and we toiled
Good men lost their lives
I don't think they knew what for
I sold them my heart
I sold them my soul
I gave everything I had
But they couldn't break my spirit
My dignity fought back
Fightback
Just fightback
Can you hear me
Can you see
Don't you hear me
Don't you see
We worked in gangs for all we were worth
The young boys pulling the wagons
We were digging the tunnels, shifting the earth
It was then that it happened
No-one knew how the cracks appeared
But as it fell they all disappeared
Stone fell like rain
Can you hear me
Can you see
Don't you hear me
Can you breathe
The smoke cleared, the dust it settled
No one knew how many had died
All around there were broken men
They'd said it was safe, and they'd lied
You could hear the cries, you could smell the fear
But good fortune that day was mine
And it occurred to me that the heart of a good man
It seems is hard to find
Can you hear me
Can you see
Don't you hear me
Don't you see
How we worked, how we worked like
The devil for our pay
Through the wind, through the snow
And through the rain
Blasting and cutting through Gods country like a knife
Sweat stinging my eyes, there has to be a better life
But I can hear my children's cry
I can see the tears in their eyes
Memories of those I've left behind
Oh just still ringing in my ears
Will I ever go back again
Will I ever see her face again
'cause I'll always remember that night
As they waved goodbye to their fathers
We came from the North
And we came from the South
With picks and with spades
And a new kind of order
Showing no fear of what lies up ahead
They'll never see the likes of us again
Driving the last spike
Lifting and laying the track
With blistering hands
And the sun burning your back
But I can hear my children's cry
I can see the tears in their eyes
Oh memories of those I've left behind
Still ringing in my ears
'cause I'll always remember that night
As they waved goodbye to their fathers
We followed the rail, we slept under the stars
Digging in darkness and living with danger
Showing no fear of what lies up ahead
They'll never see the likes of us again
Can you hear me
Can you see
Don't you hear me
Don't you see
thankyouuuuu;very much!
Thanks for taking the time to share the lyrics. So appreciated.
Thanks!
💙Thankyou for the lyrics E. D. This has never happened to me before, but even just to read the lyrics hurt my heart.💔🥺 Just goes to show how touching that song is! 😓

This track has such a strong message, and lyrics, in such an iconic album. With so much emotion, and sorta story this has to be one of their best tracks, and a track that will literally get stuck in your head for years and years to come. Literally one of Genesis' most underrated, and legendary hits. They'll be nothing like Genesis' or Phil Collins for sure. A Legendary masterpiece that is so extremely underrated, and filled with emotion. Despite mixed reviews in my opinion, Every track has a meaning to tell, and that's what makes this album so great. One of my favorite all-time Genesis songs, and one that brings many memories. Truly one of a kind. "Driving the last spike". Masterpiece! 💙👑
One of their all time best songs; epic in scope like some of the earlier stuff (Fountain of Salmacis, Musical Box, One for the Vine, White Mountain...).
@@BoBo0807 right there.
Only underrated by people who haven't got the album. That's the problem with album tracks as opposed to singles.
But yes, knew this was a masterpiece the 1st day I bought the album.
Phil will always be unstoppable
X2
Phil Collins: I remember this book _["The Railway Navvies" by Terry Coleman]_ which I was sent by Dennis Waterman actually, because he was going to make a film of it and he sent me the book 'cos he wanted me to be in it, but er... the work that these guys did on the railway - to make the English railways - it's a very touching story because they left their families, and some of them never went home again. Some of them died very young because of the amazing conditions they were living and working in, and the accidents they had would've been horrific. And even if they did survive, they'd have a strain on their backs, you know, the physical strain of doing their job. It was just quite incredible, so I've written the words based on that - based on one person's view - you know, leaves his family not knowing if he's gonna go back, he goes to work on the railways and witnesses this horrendous accident, and the deceit - it was the people who were in charge of building the railways didn't really care - I mean they were all hush-hush on the deaths on the railways; if you weren't in that community you didn't know about it. So there's that shock of finding out that no-one really cared about it, and the fact that the guys were really a breed unto themselves, and he eventually becomes hardened to the whole thing. So, it's a ten-minute song so there's four pages of words.
-From the documentary _Genesis: No Admittance_ (1991)
I love songs that tell stories and this one is at the top.
Genesis' best song for 90's era. One of the best, I should say.
The most under rated song ever. PURE CLASS, shame they did not play it on later concerts....They are storytellers on so many songs..
I've been listening to Genesis for over 40 years and they never get old!!!!
From the 70's to the 90's there music stands the test of time!!!
Thanks to all the members of Genesis past and present!!!
Their first album was from 1969. Not their best, but a good start for what would be one of the best bands in history.
Agreed. No lovely things ever get old. Legacy will live on forever, for generations.
Like fine wine😌.
I too love them... From their first concert in Chicago... I'm 71 now.
DRIVING THE LAST SPIKE 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎧🎤🎹🎻GREAT SONG.
Hi beautiful
How are you doing?
Still one of my favourite songs of all times. Together with Dreaming while you sleep. Masterpieces
I wholeheartedly
agree!
Genesis forever
What a fantastic song of the longer kind! Definitely a just reminder of the people who suffered and died back then.
Top 3 song on the album, gets me every time
Thank you Genesis, timeless music that will live forever
When Phil Collins said goodbye to Genesis in 1992, he did it in a big way with this album and this song is extremely beautiful.
Technically Phil left after 1993 but didn’t announce his departure from Genesis until 1996.
@@K.J.S.est1994 I don't agree with you because in 1991, before starting the recording sessions for this album, Phil told Mike and Tony that this would be their last recording with Genesis, perhaps the official announcement was later but between the 3 of them things were clear between 1991 and 1992.
@@jordiruiz4323 Genesis played on a concert in 1993 with Roger Taylor playing the drums, replacing Chester Thompson. The guy above is right.
@@K.J.S.est1994 what did he record with them in that time? Nothing. It's stupid to split hairs over this.
Such a powerful song! It uses such great imagery and really gets you thinking about what those railway workers went through.
I'm going to be honest, i haven't listened to this track in a while, and i won't do it right now, yet this song has my favorite lyrics done by Phil Collins in his entire career, glad that he had the oportunity to write the lyrics to a long song with Genesis.
Masterpiece ,amazing song ,amazing voice ,amazing music ,thank you Genesis 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤

Reminds me of Knebworth 92😁
Cracking tune. I still remember the video playing behind the band at Knebworth 😉
Absolutely incredible so amazing thanku so much love an God bless always from Cyprus x
Hi Wendy
How are you doing?
One of my favourite tracks on the album. Just keeps building and building...
Tony Banks rocks! 💪 Best musician, songwriter and talent! Go and get his latest classical albums! \o/ 🎼🎶🎹
Yeah, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford so under-rated.
😐
@@johngibbs799 yeah and so is. Hans Zimmer
Such a legendary song, and band. A song that my brother introduced to me that always reminds us of back home and how we always return.
This arrangement. This song. It never fails to pull up a chest felt emotion that shows in the tears that form. Every time.
Like Genesis (and Phil's songs), the magnitude is on their (and his) lyrics... facing ourself on mirror....
Hi there
How are you doing?
Love Love Love Love Love.....Genesis ❤
Great song. One of the very few that the recorded version is mirrored live. I find all Genesis' songs are even BETTER live.
Lyrics are poignant and moving.
Will always be sad that we won't be getting more legendary music from this trio of musical maestros. Always hoping unreleased "bits" will crop up & suddenly appear. 🤞🙌...
'Oh look! We found songs boxed away at The Farm'.

Hey! Just let me dream... getting older 🌬 😒

I'm sure there are unreleased tracks that could set a whole album.
@@GraachAhim I guess I'll continue to wait patiently 🥺
Best lyrics! ♥️🎸🎙️🎶
This could be the best Track post Gabriel , Brilliant very emotional
Reminds me of RFK Stadium Washington, DC in 1992 when they played it live.
Pontiac Silverdome for me in ‘92. Only time I saw them live.
What a magnificent track.
One of my favorite Genesis songs!
Can you hear me,

Wonderful Song! Strong and dramatic lyrics! It makes me feel very emotion! I love you Genesis Band! ❤️🎼🎶
Sad and dark but one to remember and think about. Great Album
🥀👣🥀Beautiful Sad Song Brilliant lyrics, unique vocals are Powerful but soothing, music effects of his song's are addictive and that's a true artist for you!🥀👣🥀☝️
Phil and Gabriel will always be my favorites! They both had a connection not many bands have...

One of my fav.song on this album.
i'm guessing we'll agree to disagree, that this is their best album. more than half are really good tunes
Honestly cut out two to four songs and this album is fantastic. There's way too much filler on this sadly, especially in the second half.
@@chilirexyoshi363 thank you... 🤝 ...yet it's 'jesus he knows me' & 'i can't walk' that are not my cup of tea.
They have to add the oddball ones. They had been doing it, since 1971. Harold The Barrel, Who Dunnit, Pigeons, Anything She Does, I Know What I Like, The Willow Farm piece from Supper's Ready. Just naming a few. All their tunes are great. This entire album, is flawless.
Genesis super. Phil Collins good luck. Всех благ Вам.
Very, very good and long song !
Quelle chanson puissante
Hi Christiane
How are you doing?
Comment Genesis arrive t il a produire de tels sons ? Trop-plein et propore....l’effet du temps n’a en rien altéré la qualite du lyrisme....toujours agreable a ecouter
This song as well as many other of his keep me strong on a daily basis and this one makes me think how we will take our country back when we end up in a civil war which is going to happen, each British man will fight to save our beautiful land like our ancestors did for us. We owe it not just to them but our future families stay strong all.
Best song ever written

💙😲Magnificent!
😍👏 😍👏 What a beautifully written but sad song of the men who gave their blood, sweat and tears, and for some-their LIVES for something they didnt know what they were getting into!! All to feed their family!! Powerful music too! When I close my eyes I feel their pain!
👏👏👏 to such a less-popular/known song that is truly a gem! 💎
Always 💙 and respect 👑 Phil and Genesis

Grandi Adoroooooo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Isso é uma bela e longa música pop mundial da banda Genesis.
Nem um pouco "pop". Totalmente Prog.
it amazing how some fans slated Phil for changing genesis even though it was the band changed. but soon as Phil left genesis didn't do that well. then Phil returns in 2007 and genesis was back on top of the world just shows how much Phil was missed

A beautiful song
Very very well, this album unknown for me, ise very like, long life too!!!
This is an incredible track, it really captures the right atmosphere and is filled with interesting sound.
Love this song! Brings back memories from my childhood since my mother used to play this album on and on. Such a lovely passage and a masterpiece, only now is that I get the message behind but I always liked it. 🙌🏼
A beautiful song by Genesis from September 1991. One of their best.
Obra maestra absoluta.

Hi there
How are you doing!
Definitely my favorite song on this album, though the video for "Jesus He Knows Me" is a classic!
The best song on the album, in my opinion. I mowed many yards as a young boy with this cassette in my Walkman.
Love Phil❤🎉🖌️😎✌️🖐️⚡.
Arguably the best song of the album. Too long, too muted and subdued to brand it as a single, but very emotional and heart-wrenching. Lovely melodic line all the way.
A+

This is a too perfect worker's rights song. An excellent song to play during Labor Day, May Day and during a strike😌.
Espetacular Phil Colins. Ótima música. Genesis Schow.
Its like TOOL of the 80's
Obra de arte !!!!!!!
🏴❤🇧🇷
Listening to this song on the 18" 15" and 12" subwoofers and separates from Stillwater Designs with the Alpine 7909 3321 EQ P.P.I. amps
7200 watts of music back in 1991.
Tony's chords at 5:53 and Phil's vocals/Drumming make this a classic - This album takes too much crap about being too long and bloated, but it's probably the same people who complained their songs were getting too short...
Die Vorherrschaft Collinss ist sehr klar
QUE c est beau......
5:53 Yes, turn it on.
1999. 2023. Atemporal
War.. History.. Blind
Is this a song about young men going to war? I've never really understood
Nobody:
Genesis: WHO WANTS A TEN-MINUTE EPIC ABOUT MIGRANTS BUILDING THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD?
Everyone: Oh dang that sounds pretty lit ngl we want it 🙋🏼♂️
Except it's not about immigrant workers on the Transcontinental Railway. It's about British workers building the U.K. railways.
I think this whole album was underrated.
The only saving grace on an appalling album.... Latter day Genesis at their very best.
I'd throw Dreaming While You Sleep, No Son Of Mine & Fading Light into the mix as well (as far as saving grace goes). Otherwise, I'd sort agree with you but probably stop short of calling it appalling.
