When I moved into my old house , it was the home of a gardener. My kids were small , I was working, I didn't have much time. After nearly 20 years we moved to a very small garden space and now I am into gardening big time. When I see some of these plants you talk about I recognise them from the old garden and I see how amazing the owner b4 us was at garden design. Everything in the correct place for sun/shade, everything blooming one after the other , even winter bloomers like camelias . And this was way b4 computers, so she must have just read garden books or learnt somehow. 💚💚 She would have had so much gardening knowledge.

I live in zone 5 and have a Saint Johns Wort which I ❤️ I have a Dappled Willow in full sun and its about 8ft tall and wide..it started to not put on the showy white and pinkish leaf growth. I trimmed it back severely, and this spring it came back with the whole bush covered with the white and pink new growth. It is July and it hasn’t changed color. Neighbors who never even noticed this large shrub are now noticing and complimenting it for the first time. Haha😂

Thank you for such an informative video! I was not aware hypericum were st. John's Wort plants which I have always admired! Now I'm really going to buy one because I also love hypericum in cut flower arrangements. And I just bought one of the Japanese dappled willows and have yet to plant it. Knowing that it likes damp soil is such a great help! And... I cannot believe the size of that monster fatsia in your yard. Just gorgeous! Perhaps I will have to get one of those as well! I have a small indoor plant which is not as colourful or as pretty as the one you showed us. Thank you so much again! Hope you enjoy your trip to the coast of Oregon! Stay safe and healthy!

Always enjoy your videos, Debbie! I look forward to the online store. I would love to obtain some of the plants/shrubs you talk about in your videos. Some are hard to find in my area, Zone 8B near San Antonio TX. Our sun is pretty intense down here so I’m always careful to monitor a new plant even if it says “likes full sun”. I’m also interested in unique garden statues, mid size. Love the concrete or aged look, rather than brightly painted.

Thank you for mentioning that fatsia japonica is not toxic to pets. Toxicity is an important fact that is not usually mentioned by most gardeners and I always have to do additional research on the ASPCA and other web sites to find that information before I will consider buying a plant. Some plants (such as nandina) are very common here in the South and they are invasive non-natives, which are also important to avoid, and the berries are toxic. I don't want to risk poisoning birds or dogs and cats. I want to attract bees and birds and butterflies, not kill them.
P.S. I love your videos! They are so helpful for someone without a green thumb.
Hello, I just bought that Fatsia Japonica because I love the way the leaves look, but was not really sure how they would grow. Fantastic that you showed that shrub, not many people talk about it. I am in zone 9 and it is growing well in the heat and humidity.
I can attest to the hypericum being deer resistant. I have had deer feast on my Annabelle Hydrangea right next to it and not touch this shrub. My hypericum gets beautiful pincushion-style flowers of a buttery yellow. Just love it! I live in zone 5b.
Love the video. Went on your website and was happy to see that it's coming along. I see some interesting iron/steel artwork featured on one of the page. I would love to see iron orbs or globes to accompany potted plants. Can't seem to find them. If you carry Sneeboer garden tools, I will be the first to purchase a set of them!
Really like the foliage of the Japonica, the big leafs stand out against the other shrubs!

This winter I cut back a very large dappled willow almost to the ground. I loved how it looked this spring!!
In this vid I heard you mention to give it a trim in late spring early summer. Would you recommend going back about a third, or even more?
I’m also wondering about a bloomerang lilac...I just recently got a poison ivy vine out of it and want to make sure it’s not too late to trim it. It needs me bed to a spot with more sun. It’s surviving but not getting as large as it’s set potential. Might August be a good time for the move?
I have 3 of the Dappled Willows and while they are beautiful they grow like crazy! Unfortunately, I didn't prune them while they were small so now they are 8 ft+. One year I cut them all the way back and they regrew full size the same season. I can't keep pruning them like that being I don't have an easy way to dispose of mountains of branches so I just give them a haircut when they impede our driveway or lawn mowing. They give pretty winter interest as well with their reddish orange stems after losing their leaves.
I like plants, just don't charge an arm and a leg for shipping.
Usps offers flat rate boxes so I never understood why some nurseries charge so much...

I LOVE the "Dappled Willow", but as a word of caution, we planted a lovely one, and the rabbits immediately and consistently ate the new growth down to the ground, until hubby came up with the idea to build a chicken wire cage around it. The cage isn't lovely, but the plant is finally able to put on some new growth.

This St.John’s Wart is a nightmare plant. The birds love the berries & spread the seeds all over everywhere!
We have lazy deer. If you can get the shrub up to five or six feet tall, the deer won't reach. lol Maybe plants get bitter with age. Deer seem to eat only the new growth on certain shrubs around here, or anything with fragrance, like azaleas.

Greetings!! 🌝 So glad I found your channel. For quite a while now I have been looking for a special shrub 🌲,one that is unique, hardy, easy to care for and beautiful 🦚. So I am going to purchase 3 to 5 ‘flamingo 🦩 shrubs’ for under the windows of my house in my front yard. I have looked at every garden shop this year for a line of women’s garden tools, but have yet to find one. I used to have a garden shovel that was easier to handle than the regular sized one that is built for mans sized hands and bodies. It also had a different colored handle. Btw, what is your name? Thank you!!!

We are zine 7....high desert in the mountains ABOVE San Luis Obispo, CA where Cal Poly University is. We have deer all over....so all my flowers are eaten, except crepe Myrtle in the fall and they leave the Icelanders alone, but this year they have even begun to eat some of my geraniums, and any other florals...guess we are just to have green.....help!

I'm in zone 5 on 3/4 of an acre, and am contemplating planting a dappled willow for a bit of friendly privacy screening. Do they require constant trimming in order to keep them in bound and attractive? Yours is so beautiful!
I trim mine twice a year just to keep it's shape. They grow fast so perfect for screening. :)

Hello Debbie, what part of Northwest are you located? I'm also in the NW Sequim WA. We own a cattle field where parts of the field becomes wetland during the fall/winter starting Nov to Feb. You think the dappled willow can handle swamp areas? It does dries out most the summer in Sequim. In fact it is starting to be drier now in March 2021.
I'm in the Gig Harbor area. I know Sequim real well have friends up there. Yes the dappled willow should do fine there. :)
I have a variegated dogwood with a reddish twig, but it gets rust colored spots on the older leaves. Any idea what this is so I can treat it? Any help is appreciated! 😊
Also, I would LOVE to have a fatsia somewhere but garden in a zone 6 (SW Pa.). If I kept it on the most protected side of the house (Eastern), close to the house to receive any radiant warmth, would it be feasible?

I have 3 monrovia StJohnsWart. Bought distressed 1 gallons. Spring 2020, they are 3 ft tall and full lile the one you showed. Temps are 85-90°, and no wilting nor leaf spot. They're in sun ALL day, unfiltered. Doesn't compare to maintenance of a newly planted hydrangea or peony.

They may nibble on them in the early spring however willows grow so fast you may not even notice. 😊

I planted azaleas. Said deer resistant. They prune them down to almost nothing for last 3 years. I don't guess I'll ever have blooms ... sigh
I've had the same problem with my azalea and found the product Liquid Fence works well keeping the deer away from it.
I agree with Diane. Liquid Fence is sold at Lowes or Home Depot and works for my zone 5b garden. You may have to re apply 2-3 times per season but it works.
Deer especially love azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and arborvitae. Those are the most eaten by deer. I have a deer issue so I have to research each shrub before I buy. One of the universities has a comprehensive list of all sorts of ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and how likely they are to be eaten.
