Layout Railfanning: BNSF Coal Train With Manned Helpers

- Please enjoy these clips I recorded while operating the coal train! This eastbound (EB) coal load represents a detoured CPKC coal train that loads out near Sparwood, BC and typically heads over Crowsnest Pass on its way east to the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad (CSS). Due to flooding, the the CPKC 816/U-SWECKB crossed the Canadian border at Eastport, ID before getting handed off to BNSF at Sandpoint, ID. Now heading over Marias Pass, the coal train stops at Essex and tacks on manned helpers to assault the greater than 2% (1.86% on the prototype) grade to the summit of the pass. At a relatively short length of 118 (26 on the model) cars, 6 locomotives still only places this train right at the bare minimum HPT rating it needs to make the grade. First, the helpers have to make their way up to Essex after being parked at Columbia Falls from an earlier job. Once the coal train crests the grade, the helpers cut away on the fly as the coal train rounds the reverse loop. Shortly after, the helpers return to their base at Essex and wait for the next EB train.

Railroad is like the real thing. Keep up the good work.
I love your working signal system. Thanks for sharing!
Love the layout and the operation videos! Been following for while. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos, I know the time, energy and effort they take.
Great run. I hadn’t gotten a notification for this or the next 14 videos.
The scenery and overall railroad all are looking really good!
Outstanding! Your new signals look fantastic, and this is, IMHO, your best video yet. Thank you for sharing it!
Incredible. Nice attention to detail .
Fantastic layout you have Cam. It's a real credit to you.
Your workmanship is floorless.

would you possibly have any photos of the Laurel, Mt train yard or any of the buildings that were there from the 70's to mid 90's
Sweet 👍🤠👍
Everything is looking great, Cam! So happy for you! It's great to see all the hard work you've put into this paying off! You have moved to one of my top 3 UA-cam layouts!
Great again love yor layout, how you do it to cut the helper on the fly
hello Railfan220 & it's is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks Railfan220 friends randy & Merry Christmas & Happy New Year's Best in the New Year's & 2024 thanks randy
I noticed that on your helper set, you had a "EOT" device attached. What particular rule is that & do other railroads practice that? Great video.
Tell us about your block detection and signals. Also, are you using 12V to power signals and if so, what resistors are you using with the atlas signals? Looking good and thanks for sharing!!!
How did the helpers uncople?
Editing or a special control
He bypasses the knuckles slightly so they are pushing but not locked in. Then at the top of grade he just reduces the throttle and away they go. Only issue would be if the couplers snagged but he addresses this with the types of couplers he uses
You know what that would be a great place to put bigfoot
Looks just like the real thing your just missing the part where the train runs over the moose and hits a bear and a semi truck stuck on the crossing lol
Ha ha ha 😐
Well to make it look more realistic get some coal and crush it and spread it along the tracks and put some white cotton on the snow sheads and write graphiti on all the cars and put a flat spot on a few wheels don't make things perfect nature isent that way nether is the railroad or RR Cars put black sout on the locos make it look real
