  • BNSF's Orin Subdivision is 130 miles of double, triple and even quadruple mainline track in the middle of Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Both BNSF and UP trains operate over this line as they haul coal out of the many coal mines along the route. With coal trains weighing in a range of 17,000 to 22,000 tons, they struggle across the unforgiving, undulating territory that sees grades up to 1%. Enjoy the sights and sounds of EMD and GE prime movers hauling Wyoming's black diamonds.

Windmills completely ruin the landscape and produce very little power for the footprint they consume. A mix of modern, efficient coal/NG/nuclear is the best option for energy.

I first visited the PRB in 2010, and they were pushing close to 150 trains ever day. Multiple 2 and 3-way meets to be had. Thanks to Obama and his EPA, that line is now a shell of its former self. Thousands of jobs lost, and everyone’s power bills are higher. It was nice while it lasted.

I find it interesting that they put so much track down finally for the traffic that was running through and it wasn't long after that traffic would drop off.

You can thank Obama. I used to work at two the mines (2005-06) these trains go too and these rails were full. Sometimes we would have trains on the main line waiting for hours to get on mine property to be loaded. Shortly after 2008 it all died off to what you see in this video.

i think it was always going to happen. as a railfan i hate to see the loss of the coal trains, but as someone that doesn't want the oceans to rise anymore than they already will, i can see why the change is coming.@@BjornStyrmir

It should rebound. In reality a modern coal fired power plant takes up a much smaller footprint that solar or wind. Without ruining the the views we love and the looks of our houses. A modern coal plant can burn both coal and NG using whichever has the lowest market price. And cleanly too with almost 100% recapture. The public want's cheap plentiful energy. We will not be giving up cars, stoves, refrigerators, and A/C to please the extremists! The wind and solar farms are just a land grab from the taxpayers to groups that will end up with tons of land once the farms go bankrupt.

Love trains but all that coal is being set on fire at the other end for electricity. Hope that humans find a better way to get energy than setting fire to rocks. Nothing changed (apart from scale and payload) here since the 1950s.
