I've never heard anyone speak so articulately about hair. It was easy to understand and the nerd in me a loved the technical explanation as to "why". The mark of an excellent teacher is one who can get their message across briefly and understandably to an audience without the knowledge. Well done my man 👌
i started cutting my hair a while ago but i never tried to cut someone else’s hair but one day my friend asked me to cut her hair bc she knew i cut my own hair. so i watched this video and her hair turned out amazing i love the technique so much, it 100% full-proof!!

Ughhh such a great informative video but I wish you finished the cut start to finish. I'm JUST starting out and would love tips when you get to the shoulder or what you would do on a real human w shoulders with length past that.... love this video but pls give more I'm depth! Wow, I’ve done everything you’ve always said, but today you said something different I never caught you saying before!!! I HAVE ALWAYS TENDED TO CUT ON THE PREVIOUS GUIDE AND COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHY A SIMPLE BLUNT CUT WOULD NEED MY TO GO BACK WITH A CONB AND CLEAN UP THE HAIR, WHERE IT WAS ACTUALLY CROOKED IN AREAS!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! This is so huge to my haircuts, all styles I wish I could personally thank you!!! Something so small in cutting hair can be so major!!! I consistently go to the same classes over and over, my manager asked why, I said because during one class there is too much information to take in, for example cutting on the guide, in one hour. Taking the class, as I watch your videos over and over I just caught you saying cut along side the guide because cutting on the guide could make parts too short. That’s exactly what I was doing!!! Now my hair cuts are so much better!!! By helping people who have tried everything, until you give a tutorial and make the stylist feel so much better about themselves, be proud you do that everyday!!! This video was a couple days late! I did a hair cutting exam on short one length and I got graduation because I angled my fingers out instead of straight down... lol I can re-do it whenever, but I would have preferred to get it one there and then. I guess you can't learn without mistakes
My tutor wouldn't let me redo any of mine. But then again she got funny with me when she found out my religion and started only giving me passes and no higher but when I saw the other tutor she only give me distinctions.
i know its 7 years later but this problem is classic no matter how much time passes. thank you for addressing this common difficulty. thank you for your clear concise tips. i will try it. thank you. can you post a continuation of this cut where you cut behind the ear and touching the shoulder. where do i keep the hair while cutting? toward the back or toward the ear? and when i take a guide will i need to change the angle of my comb or fingers? i hope you can answer this. so i can have a better handle when i cut the next hair cut.
Keep it simple is the best advice we can give... we know there is going to be a lot of home haircutting during the Stay Home Stay Safe initiative so our advice is to just do what you can to maintain until we can get back into the chair of professional stylists :-)
Great tutorial, concise, simple. Please don't take this as a criticism. As a tutorial designed for aspiring hairdressers, I would have started with the crucial importance of sectioning, everything you said + having your guest stand, heals together for finishing touches. Cheers.

I am interested in shears for dry hair cuts and also so do and donts with dry hair. I have some old school but really great shears, sadly I can not find anyone to sharpen them. I had to learn everything while working as an assistant! it sucks that you really either need to find a really good teacher to apprentice or are thrown into it and really need to learn and practice as you go.
If their hair goes over the chair and/or they have long hair and you're doing a solid cut! HAVE THEM STAND UP! The chair is over directing the hair! I watch so many stylists make the mistake of not having the client stand and then wonder why the cut is uneven or not how they want it!
Jeannine Kadillac Yes, I totally agree. So many people feel like it's not professional or it'll make the client uncomfortable. But it's honestly the best thing to do, so you end up with a good even cut.
That happened to me when I had long hair and the lady kept messing up my hair so it ended up becoming super short it was sad my hair still won’t ever grow back like that
Thank you! My son has very long, straight hair, and the last time I tried to trim the bottom two inches, it was six inches shorter by the time we finally got it evened out 😂😭. I really want to ONLY trim two inches FOR REAL THIS TIME, and now I know why it was so bad: I was doing literally everything wrong. 🤣🤦🏻♀️
thats bc it's meant mostly for professional hairdressers. it's really helpful if you've done a bunch of haircuts before but need a little help or some extra tips.

Question, if we don’t want to create graduation or elevation then why not just allow the hair to hang free with a contrasting cape or towel and just use some clippers? Please forgive the stupid question I am no pro I just enjoy watching hairstylists and see the outcome.
It's actually a great question and people definitely approach it that way. Lot's of different ways to achieve a similar goal. Sometimes it's beneficial to have light tension for control. If the client has fairly smooth hair or the hair has been blow dried super smooth and straight, cutting with no tension will give you the strongest line (or in the case of naturally curly hair that will be worn curly). The thing with clippers is that you will achieve the most rigid line where a shear with look a little softer just because it's not as mechanically precise... not better or worse... just choosing the technique that gets the desired end result most efficiently :-)

Hi there! Thats a very good question. We produce these videos with trained hairdressers in mind... it would be very difficult to become confident in cutting hair without hands-on training with an experienced teacher. We would highly recommend looking into hair schools in your area :-)
So I used to fade my own hair all the time in my late teens early 20's, so I was ok with doing it during this lame ass Quarantine BS. Well now, b/c I cut my own hair, my GF has the great idea to cut her hair... She wants to take like 5in off & guess who gets to do it!? Stand in front of your section your cutting your fingers should be angle the same position as your section as well as your shears it should be Parallel also use the center of ur shears not the tips

I'm cutting my daughter's hair for the first time bc no one in our area can seem to cut it the way I want no matter how much I explain what I want ot how many pictures I show them (disclaimer: I know I'm using the correct terms when I tell them what I want for her hair, after much much research to ensure it wasn't just that I was asking for the wrong thing) I have made all these mistakes you mention just trying to cut the first bottom section of her hair straight across lol! My question for you is this, my daughter has slightly curly hair at the bottom. I gave her a bath so her hair was very before attempted to cut it. But I find that if I don't have alot of tension in my fingers to hold it down, no matter how wet it is, it wants to pull upward, and then the line isn't straight. How do I cut a straight line then?
I guess, using the wide teeth hair comb as guide then? I saw Kenneth Siu and many other barbers do that so they can cut those not-dangerously-straight hair when it is wet and then blow dry to be later touch up according to how the nature acts as final looks. Hope this would help
