  • That dazzling new face with its necklace of LEDs below the grille heralds a rapid response to escalating competition in the midsize-sedan class. Mazda's 6 already leads the pack in road manners and bodywork. So what keeps it near the bottom of the class in sales? Too little power? Too high a price? Too few features? A sooner-than-expected freshening upgrades the '16 with distinctive front-end lighting and an impressive new dash. Is it enough to sway you from a Camry, Accord, Altima, or Fusion? Ride along with our video review to find out.

    I just bought a 2016 Mazda 6 Grand Touring with technology package on Friday May 15 and I love it! I chose black on black for color . Previously I owned a 2006 Mazda 6 I Grand Touring 4dr sedan and she lasted me for 9 1/2 years. Nothing was wrong with her. I love Mazda!!!

      Irene Vera True Mazda doesn't get the respect they deserve. I think they have some of the best engineers in the biz.When the Germans gave up on the rotary engine Mazda made it work for years and now they have arguably the most fuel efficient regular combustion engines no fancy hybrids or turbos.

      @@jtlovespi2493 unfortunately, I got into a car accident in October 2017 and she wasn’t the same anymore. So, I traded her in for a 2018 CX-5 Grand Touring with tech package! I have had this vehicle for a little over 3 years, put 22,000 miles on it so far, and have not had any issues. 🙂

    I don't understand why this car does not sell better than tenth place. I would take this any day over a Toyota Camry, Kia Optima, Hyundai Sonata. It must be the lack of Mazda dealerships and minimal marketing. This car is excellent in every way.

    • @DougCeleste
      @DougCeleste 9 років тому +4

      gedaman If the car had engine options, it would sell more. That is the BIGGEST complaint against Mazda from what I have heard and read.

    • @soggytoast111
      @soggytoast111 9 років тому +5

      Doug Celeste That is so true. The measly 184hp 4cyl engine is a dealbreaker for me. If there was an option for something more lively I would have this car tomorrow.

    • @DougCeleste
      @DougCeleste 9 років тому +3

      soggytoast111 Thanks for your reply! This engine has enough power for my tastes but I guess you prefer more which is fine. I know that 80% of the Accords sold are the four-cylinders but as far as Mazda, there is talk of a diesel engine coming out in a year or two in the USA but I will believe that when I see it.

    • @BusyBeeCompany
      @BusyBeeCompany 9 років тому +2

      Doug Celeste They have the diesel in Europe but for some reason don't want to bring it out over here, maybe its not suited to the longer journeys or more extreme weather types we get in America.

    • @DougCeleste

      BusyBeeCompany Thanks for your reply. Other car companies make diesels for the American market but Mazda has not----at least not yet. So we will have to wait and see if they ever will.

    I have had my 2016 Mazda6 for about 6 weeks now. I have the Grand Touring - blue with parchment interior. I have driven Accords and the like. In fact, I owned 2 Accords over the years - one a 4 and the other a 6. Mazda has the Accord beat - hands down. This is a vehicle that is fun to drive, comfortable and fuel efficient - and the styling beats anything in the mid size class. I'm 6' 1' and 200 pounds. The power driver's seat combined with the tilt/ telescoping steering wheel gives me a perfect driving position and its comfortable. And I have plenty of head room and leg room. The quality of the materials is first rate. There is no cheap plastic. The infotainment system works well and the Bose sound system is top notch. Absolutely love the Pandora options synced to my iPhone. XM radio is available. The nav system works just fine. As to the engine, I disagree with the reviewer. There is plenty of power. There is no need for a turbo boost or a six. And I'm averaging 30 mpg in mostly around town driving. Can't wait to take it on a long road trip to see how the mileage does. One final note, the safety features are first rate. Given the market today, the Mazda is competively priced. Don't judge this vehicle until your drive it. You will be surprised and pleased.

      +David Lyday - no regrets at all! Great handling car with excellent gas mileage - averaging 29 mpg around town. Very comfortable and the ergonomics of the interior and dash are excellent. I did have one problem - the infotainment system died after a couple of months. Dealership tried an update which came out but that didn't work. This took place on a Thursday. They ordered a new one that day and I was told it would probalby take a week to arrive at the dealership. I recieved a call on Friday that the new computer had been shipped that day and would arrive on Monday. I was back in business by late Monday morning. According to the dealership, this failure was a first for Mazda. Didn't cost me a dime.

    Don't believe troll comments in youtube.
    Consumer reports weigh in where Lexus is the most reliable and Mazda is a close second. Mazda's a japanese car through and through and it seriously needs to be noticed in the west and take its place up there with toyota and honda. Actually, tbh, I prefer mazda's mid size sedans than the other cars in that range because they give a kick to it. Boring family cars are a thing of the past. Mazda's efforts should be recognized. Not mocked by little kids whose balls haven't even dropped yet.

    It's not about power, it's about the power-to-weight ratio. The Mazda 6 weighs about 3200lbs. The Toyota Camry weighs about 3400lbs... The smaller 4 cylinder engine puts less weight over the front wheels and creates a better weight distribution front to back, which is largely responsible for the good handling that the test driver mentioned, but then he kept bringing up the engines lack of size and brawn as if it was a liability... The Mazda 6 does 0-60mph in about 7 seconds, the Toyota Camry does 0-60mph in about 8 seconds... Some perspective and facts that the driver neglected to mention... One car looks like a million bucks, the other car is felony ugly, so of course the jaded test driver is going to nitpick the blank out of the better looking car. It's not his money, he gets to drive whatever he likes for free... These automotive journalists are all alike, spoiled rotten... "...This car is narrower than its competition..." It's 72 inches wide, and you don't look like NFL lineman to me... ANYTHING these guys can do to p-ss on something, they will do it... A Ferrari Enzo has an even tighter interior, and my motorcycles have NO interior... This guy really annoyed me, because he's old enough to know better, but he whines like a punk, anyway. It's impossible car guys like this that are responsible for making carmakers play it safe, because as soon as a carmaker breaks the mold in a cool way, out come the editorial hatchets... BUT, when it comes to expensive EUROPEAN cars, well there is no end to the tolerance and understanding and excuses coming from the pro-Europe American automotive press... The Mazda 6 looks like a working man's Maserati or Aston Martin for a fraction of the price, and these guys can't stand it. It's just too good to be true, so it has to be lie of some kind. A car that looks like the Mazda 6 is supposed to have a huge V-12 under the hood, and costs the earth, and get 10 miles to the gallon, that only rich bast-rds can afford to drive. So there must be something wrong with the Mazda... It's elitist class warfare, and a little racial, too. How DARE a JAPANESE car look Italian or British... Believe me, I know what I'm talking about, carmakers can't win with these super cynics in the automotive press. I'm 50 years old, I've been reading and listening to these dweebs for years, and reading between the lines, too. They're a bunch of elitist snobs who love to hate American, Japanese and Korean cars. Especially Korean cars. They peed all over the Kia K900, too... I bet they hate Trump, and love Cruz or Hillary. Or better yet, Cruz AND Hillary. That would be a dream ticket for the automotive press, and for every comedian, too.

      +Harley Earl BINGO! Well stated sir and spot on! I am currently researching the available cars in the class and couldn't agree more. The Mazda 6 is a looker where many of the others are bland. When you actually check, the 6 is one of the quickest standard 4 cylinders in the class, quicker than the Camry 2.5 for sure. My daughter has a new Camry and loves it, but to me the Mazda is more of a drivers car and it is quicker than the 2.5 Toyota. The 2.5 Altima is spirited also but the sheer number of reported CVT problems will probably keep me away. I am leaning towards the 6, it's a sexy car and the automatic is silky smooth. Just for fun folks; look up the horsepower and quarter mile speed on a 1983 Mustang GT 5.0. Do it just for fun. Again Earl, well stated.

    • @harleyearl3289
      @harleyearl3289 8 років тому

      Leejack 27 I remember the 80's 5.0 Mustangs very well, and that was considered a hot-rod, and the Mazda 6 has the same performance specs, so it's considered slow??? I used to like those Altima's, but there's a zillion of them on the street now, so everywhere you go, you see Altima's. It's like Invasion of the Body Snatchers. They're all pod people cars now... The automotive press only allows Asians to make stupid looking cars, so beautiful, sensuous Asian-made cars will not go mainstream any time soon... You drive down the road in a Mazda 6, and you're neighbors will think it's an Italian car. Does that make it an imitation?.. Only if it had all kinds of technical problems, but I see a theme in the 6 design that is uniquely Japanese. It's like a beautiful Japanese girl vs a beautiful Italian girl. They're both different but equally desirable... A Maserati or an Aston Martin are sensual but in a more macho way. More macho, and much more expensive... What pisses me off are all these imitation Harley's, imitation Ducati's and imitation Triumph's. If the Japanese are going to just copy, I do not support that.

    • @Theholyrosary1989
      @Theholyrosary1989 8 років тому +1

      +Harley Earl Yep! Here's another thing people need to look at when they consider these class of cars. The manufacturers that offer a V6 (or other optional engine), don't just charge you for the difference in engine price. Instead, they package the "upgraded engine" with other options that cost an arm and a leg. The result is a much higher priced car. "Back in the day", cars that ran the quarter in the 15's were considered hot rod cars. The 6 can run mid 15's according to what I've read, yet, it's slow???? I just don't get it.

    • @harleyearl3289
      @harleyearl3289 8 років тому +1

      Leejack 27 That's right, those V6 engines are part of a bundle of other options that drive up the price on a car. Cable companies operate the same way, but just to shut up the critics, Mazda should go ahead and offer a high performance V6 or a V8 [option], but then they can't really do that with FWD, so they'd have to go to an AWD chassis, driving up the price still more, but I'd give the fanatics what they want just for the street creds. We live in a radicalized world populated by adrenaline junkies. Nothing is ever enough... I have more fun on my smaller displacement bikes than I do I my one cruise missile bike, because it's more fun and adventurous to ride something that's within your limits, rather than riding something that far exceeds your limits (or the limits of the road and opposing traffic, police), because then the machine is riding you. I get on my '06 'Busa, a stupid impulse buy, and I'm not riding that bike, it's riding me, and it's so damn scary, it's fun. Sometimes. But I like my 600's and Harley a lot more. They got plenty of power, but I'm in control. That giant Suzuki I got needs wings so it can fly, because that's what it really wants to do... You wanna go REALLY fast, then go fly a plane, and leave us cruisers alone.

      +Harley Earl Here's something I found particularly amusing. I saw a youtube review of a guy doing a 2.5 Altima. When he stepped on it he said is was a pleasant surprise, very nice. Then he said, the only car faster with the base engine in this class was the new Mazda 6. Now, same guy reviewing the Mazda 6: He said, you're not going to win any drag races with this thing. Why the double standard? The 6 is faster than the Altima (according to him) yet the Altima is a pleasant surprise while the 6 isn't going to win any drag races? What the heck?????

    I was fortunate this weekend to rent a 2016 Red Mazda 6 from Avis rent a car in Tampa, FL. Although I've test driven it before, having it for a weekend made a much better impression. First of all, I got 37.8 mpg from about 70% highway and 30% city driving, that is awesome! Second, it is much quieter than the 2015 model and the handling is spot on. The only complaint is that I could not get good back support (experienced the same in other new cars). The Camry as dull as it is, comes with power lumbar even on the base model. Also truecar price on it is around $22K, versus $19K for a Camry or Honda. I'm impressed with it. Just have to justify the extra $2k in my mind and hope it last as long as my previous Hondas and Toyotas.

      @sergioquesada8256 9 років тому

      It just needs a MagnaFlow, KnN typhoon intake, and a hypertech a turbo or V6 won't be needed and your engine will last you forever. Best automatic transmission on a 4 cylinders car specially the automatic it has a really long first, just imagine having two inexpensive bolt ons and a $400 tuner on this transmission would be hella fun.

    • @AndresSalazarAutos
      @AndresSalazarAutos 9 років тому

      ***** I can, and the Rx-8 never had a turbo (at least not from factory), but remember the Mazdaspeed mx-5, 3,6? and don't forget the Cx-7... and truth to be told if you want to squeeze good fuel economy from a turbo you have to drive it like a grandma, also Mazda has been building turbo diesels for very long time. They use to make excellent V6s in the 80s and 90s, if it was a priority they could easily build a 3.5 V6 with more power than the current Ford 3.7. And remember turbos add complexity and could decrease reliability and that's something that Mazda cannot risk on a tight budget, I personally think they are doing great work. In Mexico they already have 4% of the market, that's huge for a small company (if the current trend continues they are going to overtake Honda in the internal market)

    With any features this is over $36000 on Mazda's Canadian website. The 2016 Maxima is the same price with a 300hp engine, much more features and interior materials that are in another league compared to this one. That may explain why it's not selling that well despite the nice smooth design. I just don't see why anyone would buy this at this price point.

I know camrys are probably the most reliable cars on the whole market, but check consumer reports, the mazda6 strikes just below the camry, still a better car than malibu, fussion, sonata, optima, 200, etc (in reliability)... plus I've owned both mazdas and toyotas at the same time, no problems with anyone, great brands, I love them :D

      Ricardo Gutierrez Motor Trend agrees with you saying the Mazda 6 is the best balanced-feeling "driver's car" (for people that love to drive). It has just enough power for reasonable excitement and amazing handling and suspension firmness according to MT.

    +Paul Dwyer The following reply I made a week ago was meant for you. I don't know how it wasn't posted to you. The Honda Accord is the working man's BMW (or so I assumed). You probably made a smart choice as long as all those electronic bells and whistles don't cause any trouble down the road. www.edmunds.com/honda/accord/2016/st-200759703/consumer-reviews/ Owning a Honda has been a mixed bag experience for some, but a good experience overall for many. From what I've read, but I've been hearing about timing belt issues for years from Honda owners. Now that you've already made your purchase, I strongly recommend that you only use Honda certified mechanics for any and all repairs and routine maintenance. Do nothing to void your Honda warranty, because you might need it down the road. Do everything that Honda requires you to do, including all routine maintenance and inspection. I would just go to your Honda dealership for all of that, it could be more expensive, but they won't have any wiggle room to not honor warranty repairs.

      Thanks Earl for saying hello. Yes, I live a mile from the Dealership and the Dealership here is excellent. They are really friendly and great. I have a seven year warranty on my Accord. I got my car on October 15th, but I'm still really interested in cars. Check this out. I started with the Camry analysis and that led to the fusion and Mazda. Now that I already have my car, I saw a video for the 2018 Camry XSE on Redline Review. This guy, sofyan Bei, usually speaks ill of Toyotas but he seemed enthusiastic about this one. Check out the video and let me know what you think. For certain, if I had a motorcycle, it would be a Harley Davidson.

      I liked the 2 tone styling a lot, but what they did in back is design sabotage img.autobytel.com/car-reviews/autobytel/131645-10-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-all-new-2018-toyota-camry/2018_Toyota_Camry_XSE_exterior-rear-detail-closeup.jpg All that ugliness to accommodate a fake vent. Unbelievable... Overall, the new 4th gen Kia Optima looks better, in my opinion. The new Nissan Maxima is interesting to look at, but has an ugly grill and/or mouth carrrs.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/10732_2016_Optima_SXL_2_0_turbo.jpg ... upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c7/V09563P006.jpg ... st.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/10/2015/09/2016-Nissan-Maxima-Platinum-front-three-quarters-in-motion.jpg ... A relative of mine just bought one of these Kia's, except normally aspirated. The 2.4 liter, not the turbo. The only thing he doesn't like about the car is the car's high beltline or high window sills, but he's about 5'-9".

      Thanks Earl. So in your opinion, for an all round good car for the next 15 years, would you rather own a 2017 Accord v6 touing, black with black leather, or one of these 2018 Camry's? Some people said that if the Camry looked flashier, the accord will still drive and handle better. What do you think? I'm still very fascinated by cars.

    • @harleyearl3289
      @harleyearl3289 7 років тому

      For the next 15 years?.. Your Accord looks plenty cool enough while still looking grownup. It's styling will age well. The Toyota looks busy and pretentious. Reliability over the next 15 years? With a front drive car, I have to doubt it. It's not a Crown Vic, but you got the Honda, so just take good care of it, and the 7 year warranty will cover you for about half that time, at least. With the way this world is going, I honestly don't know if we have 15 years left to live. We'll see.

    • @pauldwyer6118
      @pauldwyer6118 7 років тому

      Yes Earl, you're correct. I think the Camry is trying to be flashy to win over owners of other cars. Thank you for your praise of my car. I researched for ten years before making the purchase. I have been drawn to muscle car videos too. Of course, I like them. (Everybody does). But for practicality, they might be out of my resources. If I was rich and lived in California, definitely. But I'm middle class and live in Illinois.

      TheLifetraveler1 Good point. You need to have money to burn to to have that much engine variety. It's all about the engineering and r&d dollars required. Mazda is kind of like Subaru or Mitsubishi Motors on the cash to burn scale.

    The vast majority of Hondas, Nissans and Toyotas running around are 4 bangers not six cylinders. I don't get why these "self proclaimed" auto experts dog a car because the manufacturer doesn't offer something they think should be offered, ie., an optional engine. Each of the competitors offer nice things and so does Mazda, that's the beauty of competition, get what YOU like. People love to bitch, it's that simple.

    The worst things about the 2016 Mazda 6:
    - Less than 26MPG fuel economy. Seriously, this is a huge letdown for this series.
    - No AWD powertrain
    - All this in the expense of gimmicky tech features like the HUD.
    The fact is that most buyers in this segment want better fuel economy, AWD powertrains and practicality such as comfortable seats.
    This 2016 Mazda 6, according to most reports, lacks that.
