    It’s amazing how the thin black fondant really turned this cake into a ‘cartoon cake.’ I’m amazed at how you came up with this idea and it’s just super darned cute. I’ve watched every video you’ve made and ALWAYS learn something new.

    One of the things I have struggled with the most since I started baking is trying to figure out what brands are good and what brands are not really. There are SO many choices because of the Internet. If you watch just a few different people's videos, they all seem to use something different. I think my main area of frustration is about coloring, i.e., powder dusts, gel colors, edible markers, air gun, shimmer colors vs. spray shimmer, etc. The second area is definitely what brand of emulsions and extracts to use. Will you please address these two areas in an upcoming video, Karolyn? Thanks!

      Right now in Philly, it's like 25 degrees (F). So it's freezing here. That's why I love the Winter! It's cold and no humidity and my cakes don't sweat! If it's hot where you are, you have to control the environment where you decorate (keeping it air conditioned).

    Hi, as always great tutorial! Just wondering why didn’t you use black buttercream instead of fondant for all outlines. Feel like it will be faster

    • @KarolynsKakes
      @KarolynsKakes  Рік тому

      You definitely can use buttercream if you'd like. It would be faster. However, I personally have very shaky hands when it comes to writing on cakes. So it won't be clean and neat because the lines won't be as straight. It's difficult to keep even pressure when squeezing it out of the bag, so it may be bigger in some areas. And, sometimes the buttercream line breaks or has air bubbles in it and it messes up. Using fondant is much easier (for me) because you have the line and all you have to do it adhere it to the cake!

    That’s gorgeous I have a question might sound crazy but I’m new to this. How do you store your edible images when you have extra

    • @KarolynsKakes
      @KarolynsKakes  Рік тому

      There is a silver mylar envelope that the icing sheets come in. I save those envelopes (I never throw them away LOL) and store extra images in there. If you don't have those envelopes, I would double bag them in ziplock bags. They do dry out faster in the regular ziplock bags though.

    Business-wise, when you change the size of a cake, do you tell or ask your customer, or do you just present it to them with more servings? I always feel like I should contact them and say, "I'd love to add a small tier (for example) to make the design better, hope that's okay."

    • @KarolynsKakes
      @KarolynsKakes  Рік тому +1

      For the most part, I don't tell them, I leave it as a surprise. And I tell them when I send the picture. I've never had someone complain when I went the extra mile and added more cake or detail! I only do it for customers who are more relaxed about the design. If they are very specific about the number of tiers and the design, I won't mess with it.

      @@KarolynsKakes Im sorry but another question 😬 I hope to make a cartoon cake next week and use all of your steps , from fondant , baking , frosting the cake etc. Does putting it in the fridge after each layer make the cake a little dry or will it stay moist because the crumb coat will lock in the moisture ?

    Hi. Did you leave the black to set for a while so it doesn't break or not?

    • @KarolynsKakes
      @KarolynsKakes  Рік тому

      No, I used the black right away so it wouldn't set and crack / break apart as I was working with it.
