Sherem Denies Christ | Jacob 7

  • Sherem preaches to the people against the doctrine of Christ found in the scriptures and contends with the prophet Jacob. Sherem demands to see a sign proving that Christ will come, and he is smitten by the power of God. He speaks one last time to the people, confessing that he denied the Christ and the power of the Holy Ghost, and then dies.
    Based on Jacob 7.

I am married to a man who once believed but now denies Christ too... I never thought it would happen to my own husband and unbelief would come to my own home. My testimony of Christ and His greatest of all gift... the atonement is stronger now as a result of seeing what disbelief has done to my loved ones. It is a hard reality to live with but I also have hope in Christ and his redeeming power in the lives of unbelievers.

Keep setting a good example and loving them and keep the faith. The Lord put you in their path for a reason. ❤️

Every church I have ever attended or read literature for tries to prove with cherry-picked scripture and logic that it is correct, except for one which told me I could ask God directly to know whether it was true or not. That one was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. More than once I have knelt in solemn and sincere prayer to know the truth and the power of the Holy Ghost has manifested it to me. It is so easy to be decieved and go astray in today's world, but God does not intend for us to figure everything out by ourselves. He himself can and will answer prayers if we are humble and sincere in seeking Him out.

After baptism we receive a gift of the Holy Ghost, that although we are still sinners, if we exercise the gift we can free ourselves from all sin. As DC says 50: your light shall grow brighter and brighter until the perfect day, and I say these things that you may know truth, that you may chase darkness from among you. 1John1 Fellowship and similar scriptures there are good too. God Bless.

Peace for a Palestinian, by Sahar Qumsiyeh page 65
“After months of being the only member of the Church in my family and having everyone telling me I was wrong... I started to falter. I remember one hard night in particular ... My brother had spent all day mocking my beliefs and saying bad things about the LDS church. He did this all day and continued even as I got in bed to sleep... Unable to take it any longer, I got out of bed and, in order to avoid my brother's words, went into the bathroom.
I found myself kneeling down in the bathroom and through my tears, asking, "Heavenly Father, are you really there?"
I had an amazing, sacred spiritual experience that night that not only confirmed to me the existence of God but also reconfirmed to me that the teachings of the LDS Church were true. I never doubted again!"

Thank you for sharing I too had a similar experience when I joined the church as a 17 yr old. My family are Catholic and gave me a hard time just like you shared and i too knelt down tearfully and poured my heart out to Heavenly Father. My experience was so powerful I never doubted again. Many years later I have been blessed through obedience to have an eternal family where I have married adult children who are also sealed to there spouses and there children. That experience as a 17 yr old was a pivotal moment in my life that led me on a course of many wonderful blessings.

For me I would hope the case of "Sherem" is similar to a child who says they hate their parents and begins to rebel, when only years or so later they feel the weight and begin to seek forgiveness. I hope I'll be ready to accept a changed heart back into the fold. I should not enjoy or look forward to a mind/heart that's been deceived.

@Mike "Mormon" when used to refer to a religion is only a nickname and you know it. There is only one president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and other religions are not affiliated with the Church and there's no reason to bring them up here. Of course the term "prophet" has a more broad meaning, and of course members of the Church of Jesus Christ listen only to the true prophets who lead the Church. These are all given, and it's disingenuous for you to converse based on any other assumption.

@Bon Jovi Basically in this video/scenario God said, "Oh you want a sign, do you? Here ya go wise guy!"
A very angry, malicious, punitive, and quite frankly cruel response from a "loving father." Nasty. There is one attribute of God blatantly missing from this exchange: mercy. I can't worship or love a being who I have to walk on eggshells with. All my years in the church it was the same message about never, ever being enough.... and don't ask too many questions.

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 4 роки тому +1

@@astrangerhere Would it be more loving and merciful to let Sherem continue on for many more years of sealing a worse eternal fate, or to accommodate his request for a sign and do it in such a way that Sherem could recognize his great mistakes and perhaps repent to some degree? Life lasts for only a few years and then we all will die, but our eternal judgment lasts forever. Sherem was honest before God before dying; that's better than forging his soul in sin for many more years before dying. Sherem's fate was uncommon, and of course we don't have to worry about "walking on eggshells" for fear of dying, but we are blessed every time we follow God's counsel and we deny ourselves those blessings when we choose not to follow His counsel.
As to not "being enough", I feel like I've spoken about this with you before, but none of us are "enough" by ourselves. We all fall short of God's glory on our own merits. However, with the grace and power of Jesus Christ, *all* of us are enough.
Asking questions isn't a bad thing--it's a good thing. However, asking questions without allowing God to answer them would be bad.

The thing I noticed is that Jacob said, "as thou KNOW." And Sherem was shocked because he was caught out in his evil intent. Yet he persisted. When the consequences hit, it seems like he did a death-bed repentance, because now he worried most about what would happen to HIM. I got the feeling he was sad he'd been caught, but not his tries to turn believers away from the Savior, or his denying the Holy Spirit. Those were my impressions. But my heart was very moved that there were those who hoped he'd be forgiven.
I heard a young man give his testimony on a Fast Sunday years ago. He had never learned about the Holocaust, never heard of it. Then he took a class where he learned all about it and saw "the pictures" and footage. He said he was in such shock he couldn't sleep or eat for days. When he finally fell asleep, he had a dream. He found himself in a completely black place, and voices were screaming and agonized. He heard a man call out, "Can I ever be forgiven?" And he heard himself answer, "I don't know, Adolph, but you're my brother and I love you." And I learned how crucial it is that we believe our Redeemer when He exhorts us to have His pure love and forgiveness for ALL our brothers and sisters.

@@scottvance74 Ever heard of the great and dreadful day of the lord? Great for his people. Dreadful for those who oppose him? Yes he will kill them in his wrath and anger. But that won't happen until later down the road. For now, he allows them to stay here and continue their lives in the hope that they will change. Have you never read Isaiah? He destroys the wicked to save their souls and move them on into the next life, where hopefully they will change. They will no longer be able to damage people's testimonies on the earth. It is an act of mercy as well in behalf of those wicked people by a God who knows what is best for them. In some cases, being killed is the best he can do in order to save their souls. A good Christian is one who is preparing to meet God, and doing their best to follow His Gospel. A Christian refrains from judgment and is charitable. They let God judge others like how Jacob did.

We are called to endure right to the end of our lives, which means continually accepting the truth and rejecting the wrong. Lehi's vision of the iron rod shows that evil is close by in our every step along the iron rod: the filthy river. And even if we reach the tree of God's love the filthy river is still right beside us -- maybe another reason why the story relates that some fall away even after partaking of the fruit of the tree. I like D&C 50: God is light and if you receive light and continue in God ye shall receive more light and that light shall grow brighter and brighter until the perfect day (tree of love). And I say these things that you may know truth and chase darkness from among you. This scripture suggests fellowship is a good way of growing truth 1John 1 If you walk in the light as he is in the light, then you shall have fellowship one with another and the blood of his son will cleanse you from all iniquity. If we say we have no sin then we deceive ourselves and the [full] truth is not in us. Never stop growing your testimony, because he who learns to love himself can truly love other people: the 1st and 2nd commandment. Else we are hypocrites trying to remove the mote from another's eye while a beam is in our own eye! Hebrews 5 and 13 are good too: milk and doctrine. In Hebrews 5 discerning both good and evil means discerning the good and evil within ourselves. Hebrews 13 means a head knowledge of scripture leads to error and doctrine that is powerless, unprofitable. It says it is a good thing that the heart be established by grace and not head knowledge. Grace is the free gift of God depending on our faith for Ephesians says By grace you are saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God. Meanwhile DC 9:8 says you must study a thought out in your mind and then ask God if it is true and if it is true he will cause your bosom to burn so that you know it is true -- another indication that heart is better than mind in discerning truth.

One thing I've noticed since this video and as I go back now and read again is that this man, wild dying, Said he worried for his own soul because he says he committed the unpardomable sin. What's interesting that I have taken notice of is he didn't seem to say how concerned he was for all of those that he turned away from God. Although, he did want them all gathered around hurriedly so he could Tell them he was wrong, he lied to God which then turned the people back to God. Now I have much to ponder about This particular scripture, the nature of God, things we do that are unpardonable, but also compared to repentance and change.
But he also clearly knew of God, and only believed after he received a sign and was smitten. But so many people are also smitten so that they can turn to God and that is the loving gift of God that help us come to repent

It really intrigues me how the three different main anti-Christs in the Book of Mormon operate:
    1. Sherem does not deny God, and still preaches that the scriptures are true, but declares that Christ is a myth and certain parts of the doctrine are inventions
    2. Nehor preaches popularity and that leaders should be supported by their followers
    3. Korihor straight up denies God exists and that everything you do is okay.
I love that, because it shows how Satan can use different methods to achieve the same result, and because we see much the same things from various factions in our modern world, all with the goal of shaking us from the faith

The main narrative running throughout the Book of Mormon is summed up in Alma 34:5:
"And we have beheld that the great question which is in your minds is whether the word be in the Son of God, or whether there shall be no Christ."
This is the crux of our faith. Over and over again, throughout the Book of Mormon, this question is raised again and again, only to be answered in the affirmative by the Lord's servants. Today, the same question is still raised by the world, by those seeking to remove Christ as the center of our lives.
This is why the Book of Mormon is so vital to us, to remove doubts whispered by the devil. The devil used the word "If" many times in the New Testament, attempting to make the Savior doubt himself during his fasting sojourn in the desert and when He hung on the cross. The Book of Mormon removes the "if" and replaces it with "is", declaring that Jesus Christ IS the Son of God, the Savior of the world.

That's a great question! I don't know if they kept all of the Kosher tenets, but there is no mention of pigs or pork among these settlers (or Nephites) in the Book of Mormon, just cattle, so I assume they at least avoided pork. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints don't have any restrictions on eating pork today (since we view the Law of Moses as having been fulfilled in Christ); however, we do have a health code called the Word of Wisdom which we believe to be divinely inspired, which cautions to eat meat sparingly. This is also the same health code that cautions against any usage of alcohol and tobacco, among other things.

Well, the Book makes it clear that they kept the Law of Moses, but it does not give the Law in great detail. However, Nephi said in that the Law of Moses was recorded in a separate record they had, the brass plates. So, we have no reason to assume they did not follow those same doctrines until Christ came. There are even chapters in 3 Nephi discussing how people thought they could stop following the law of Moses at Christ’s birth, and how they needed to be corrected. But hey, if you want to learn more, I’d recommend you read the text yourself. References start as early as 1 Nephi 2.
