  • Captain Steve Kilpatrick grew up with a cane pole and a .22… Hunting and fishing has always been his life. I first meet this likable man in the late 80’s when I was fishing the fabled flats of Homosassa. He has always been impressively kind, and when I called to talk to him about the day he and his angler Jim Holland jr. caught the 202.8 pound world record behemoth, he was really excited about hosting us in his home. Remember this is an important fish. This fish is the greatest tarpon ever caught on a fly rod because its the only fish over 200 pounds, The Holy Grail! They caught the fish everyone had been chasing for decades.
We arrived at his home in Chiefland, Florida on a beautiful, open 10 acre parcel with large live Oaks with hanging Spanish moss on many. His home is filled with stunning furniture that he’s made; dressers, drawers, beds, tables. All made by a true craftsman. He works on all the equipment in the yard and many of his friend’s boats are rigged by Steve, the Fixer!
Over the next few days he and his wife Peggy made sure that we’d leave there like family members. But it would all be about the story of a big fish caught by a legendary guide and a young angler.

Agreed Andy. Steve Kilpatrack's story of the world record tarpon on fly is one of the most important to record. Capt. Steve isn't at all like I thought he would be. He is well and soft-spoken, and gentlemanly off the water.
Some other captains are mean, selfish and arrogant. Captain Steve isn't that at all. He is one of the good guys.
These are my last days in Florida for a few months. I can't think of a better way to end it than with this podcast and one last tarpon trip tomorrow.
    Thank you.

I appreciate Steve’s comments about Stu. We fished with and learned from him starting, tarpon season 1988. He’s consistent with what Stu taught us. It’s what I appreciate about the clip you posted with the tarpon close. The rod pressure is on the butt section.

16:00 Guest is talking about learning to fight a fish from Stu Apt who would only use 12 lbs. tipper and land his 100 pound fish in 6-10 minutes. I heard another guide say "your goal is to confuse and subdue the fish, not follow it". I'd never thought of it in these terms but that comment and this guests commentary really make me think about it differently now. I used to think I wanted to avoid breaking off, now it's more use your rod and drag to its fullest. Excellent.
20:00 Guest says "I fished 6 and 8 and what a lesson that was, we went through an evolution, I should say, learning what to do and what not to do with these fish." For one viewer the most interesting thread that runs through MillHouse is the learning, the passion to know and understand over years and years. When I think about my favorite guests the all really embody this passion for learning it, not just succeeding, but understanding.

Success is a byproduct of understanding. Otherwise it's just called luck.

It’s not 30lb test. It’s often 60 or 80. And yes, it’s not the same game at all.
