New subscriber here sent by Pammy's plant things. I have tried to switch over to pumice for most of my succulents because I hate that perlite floats to the top. However, pumice is expensive since I can't fund it other than online. For my houseplants it's perlite I use since its lighter and I don't want my plants too heavy especially the hanging plants. Thanks for sharing and stay blessed☺👍❤.
For sure can be expensive and heavy!! You could try asking your local nursery to order some in for you. I did this; and now they carry it all the time and it’s much mor affordable:) thanks so much for watching!!!! 💚
Great video! I got a bag of pumice when I did some succulents, and now I add it to my potting mixes for house plants too and I feel good about it. I also add coco chips! Do you know about them?
@@plantgirl_50bre50 Awesome! Yes, coco chips are cool, and seem rather perplexing to me as I know they help with keeping soil chunky, therefore well draining, they also DO retain water! Whaaat? So in that way I think they slightly resemble pumice. I'd love to see videos mentioning the coco chips!
Hi there new sub here just a question , I plan on using pumice / perlite mix for my bonsai trees so just wanted to know do I need to still maintain drainage holes in my pots when using the pumice ? Thanks ps love the shirt I’m big fan 😃😃
HI! thanks so much for subscribing and watching! So pumice and perlite will defiantly help with aeration and added drainage (if there is a drainage hole). They wont act as a substitute for that. However they will help the quality of your soil, so if you choose to pot without a hole just be careful with the amount of water you give your plant. I have some pots without holes and some with holes, as long as I am super careful on the amount of water given it hasn't been a issue thus far. I hope that helps answer your question. :)
Hi! Thank you for watching! I usually add about 20-30%, but I also toss in activated charcoal and orchid bark (or something similar). If you are only adding pumice you can add a bit more. Any amount is helpful though really. :)
Adding any amount will benefit it, as long as you let the soil dry between waterings. They do like really well draining soil, for my Adansonii i use 2 parts soil (potting medium of choice, soil, coir etc) 1 part pumice, 1 part orchid bark, 1/2 part charcoal, 1/2 part worm castings. This is just a general amount, if you do more or less it should be fine :)
Very much informative right down to minus, Thank you . And I use charcoal in every soil mix like you too . Newcastle AU
Thank you so much for watching! I’m so glad you found it informative. Charcoal is great isn’t it?!
Good information. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Loving all of this soil science content.

From where I live, we can buy a sack of pumice for about 2 dollars. But perlite is so expensive
I find that it is usually one or the other, it’s interesting for sure. 💚
If charcoal is not available how about using some carbonized rice hull?
Is pumice good for adansonii?
Absolutely! 🙌💚

Pumice is cheaper here in the Philippines. Can I use it instead of perlite on african violets? Can I add charcoal as well on AV? TY

Absolutely!! Both would work great for them! That’s great that pumice is cheaper :)

Hmmmm... can I use pumice on my vegetable farm? (Bitter gourd, eggplant)..
Absolutely! :)
i stopped using perlite -- in favour of using pumice
Here in the philippines, pumice is actually cheaper and easier to find.
That’s great! I truly prefer pumice, so that’s wonderful :)
Help me which is better for aeration for my potted plants Pumice or Perlite?.
Good.....🥰
Thank you!
How much charcoal should i add in pot?
Hi! I don't think it has to be an exact amount, but my go to is 10-15% of the potting medium. Hopefully that makes sense. :)
@@plantgirl_50bre50 and how much percent of pumice should i add?
It will depend on the type of plant. I generally add at least 30% though :)
Plantgirl_50 * Bre ok thanks a lot and i want to add in potting mix for monstera adansonii how much is enough in 15 inch pot?
