Basically the Jazz were the Lob City Clippers 2.0. Just a good regular season team but come playoff time, they come short. But we all knew they weren’t serious contenders ironically.
Gobert not improving offensively, while DM didn’t improve defensively combined with the lack of capable perimeter defenders killed this team. At the same time though a good portion of fault lies with the coaching staff. Too many winnable series were bungled.
Gobert couldn't improve offensively, as the coach and other players, except for Joe Ingles, never managed to give him the ball on a couple plays. Even if a player develop some offensive skills during off-season and in training, he can't get any better if he has no opportunity to use them on the court during a match. Brook Lopez become a good 3-pt shooter, for a center, because he was allowed to shoot 3s in-game.
@@Chocolouf I very much doubt that Brook Lopez statement. Before you get the chance to shoot them in game, you have to show you can make them in training. If you claim Gobert has only attempted 11 threes in his career (and missed all) because they won''t let him, I'd answer it's because he can't make threes. You out here acting like he could shoot 30% if only given the chance. If he could he'd have it. Clearly he can''t.
I always say the ironic part is a versatile wing who can score, play make, & play defense like Hayward (who was an all star) was the only piece this Jazz team needed.
The thing to remember is that Gobert was a 27th pick. Mitchell 13th. You can't expect players drafted at those spots to not have some glaring flaws, and much of the rest of the roster was the same. I loved this team, but I'm not surprised they flamed out in the playoffs. Of their top nine guys, they were relying on so many guys in their mid-thirties (Conley, Bogdanovic, Ingles) or players who has simply never been reliable defensively (Clarkson, Mitchell, most of the old guys too). They got away with it in the regular season thanks to spacing and Gobert cleaning up mistakes, but it would never work once a foe could gameplan against you and repeatedly target the weaker defenders and pull Gobert out of the paint, as we saw season after season.
Klay Thompson was a number 11 pick and draymond was a 2nd round pick. Hell, the current back to back mvp was a 2nd round pick. You don’t need lottery picks if you can develop talent

Rudy Gobert can’t dribble more than once or twice. For being one of the highest paid Centers in the league he is the least skilled on the offensive end. He ultimately should be blamed for most of the Jazz’s struggles.
😂😂😂😂😂😂he’s literally just there to protect the paint, set screens and P&R opportunities, you know what that sounds like to me. LITERALLY ANY OTHER CENTER IN THE LEAGUE
@@WestCoastCheeseHead other centers have 3 DPOYs ok.... he can only absolutely shut down the paint and everything you mentioned. ONLY. You say only as if every other center can do what he does at that level, they can't. Rudy Gobert is one of the greatest defenders the league has ever known
I was one of donovan mitchell’s earliest supporters. I watched his draft day livestream and was freaking the hell out when I saw my Jazz of all teams were trading up to draft him. And I shot my step dad a text talking about “omg imagine Gordon and Donovan Mitchell on the same team”, and obviously he didn’t really care, because Donovan Mitchell was just a random late lottery pick, a lot like Trey Lyles or Alec Burks. Then we went to those summer league games and I was immediately vindicated. I’ll always love this era of Jazz ball. I dont even care how dysfunctional it was. Whatever. We’re never winning a championship, I’m resigned to that because for some reason people from outside Utah just really fucking hate Utah and hate the idea of living here as though we’re all Amish people who banned drinking alcohol, but at least we have the potential to be fun, and we were really fun during this era.
20:01 the Jazz didn't squander it, Mitchell turned the ball over with 13 seconds left and cost them the game. They were so lucky that Denver missed the layup and Conley got a chance to even attempt a game winning shot.
With how much media shits on Rudy I’m glad to see so many people use common sense when it came to just how bad the entire teams defense was. I’m glad he’s gone from the team that hated him so much
This is amazing content, I love it!! An idea for future content is 'How Kevin Durant Ruined his Career by leaving the OKC Thunder', that could detail how KD joining the Warriors ruined his all-time legacy, as well as joining the Nets to play with Kyrie ruined his remaining prime years due to the uncertainty of the Kyrie Irving and James Harden situations. Just an idea my man, but keep up the great content, I love all of it!
I'm from Utah and am a die hard Jazz fan and part of me missed this era of ball. Rudy and Donovan were so fun to watch especially in the regular season ,but the result was always the same after June they chocked in the playoffs because they prioritized offense to much ,and left Rudy with no defensive help all while giving Donovan role players that could contribute to his stats but didn't help much else. I'm glad we are rebuilding now it's going to take time before we are contenders again ,but it's better to be bad now with a organization that has a great team builder like Danny Ainge (Even though the new rebrand is awful.) than regular season stars that fail to do anything great.
The microphone thing was funny. Him testing positive after was even funnier. I had no idea it would cause this much strain. I mean I would be angry too but not that angry.
Wow, really interesting and thorough accounting. As a warriors fan, I always feared the Jazz in the regular season. No idea why they always disappointed in the playoffs. I don’t blame Rudy. More the lack of perimeter defense and the ability to scheme and game plan in the playoffs. Hopefully they can rebuild in the next few years.
It’s because Gobert is unplayable in the playoffs. Teams just go small and abuse his slow footwork in PnR’s. Since he has zero offensive game he can’t punish teams for going small by scoring in the paint. The guy literally has made zero improvement on offense since his first year in the league till now. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for him to have 2 or 3 post moves if you’re paid like a superstar. Like Mcgrady said, what is he working on in the off-season? It’s crazy that a max player doesn’t even have a single post move
@@Romanus- You really know nothing, Gobert wasn't to blame, the other 4 players playing no perimeter defense were the reason they got abused. A center isn't supposed to be a good reliable exterior defender. Regarding his offensive skillset, Snyder and the other players, except for Ingles, never passed him the ball.
Let me just say though, despite the fact that the Mitchell-Gobert era didn't pan out the way they wanted, you have to give it up to the entire Jazz who tried their best to capitalize on this but just fell short: - The front office were able to trade for Mitchell who wasn't really seen as a franchise changing player. Lucky them since Hayward would leave in the following free agency that came after. They then tried surrounding Mitchell and Gobert with more offensive players which sacrificed their defense but immensely improved their offense - Coach Quin Snyder then made adjustments to his offense with the more offensive minded roster he was given with and it showed with a historic offense. Was it too simplified? Yes, but it worked wonders for them for the most part Wherever the Jazz go from here on out, hope they can build to be true contenders once again
It’ll all be up to how they draft and if their player development staff can improve bc it’ll be at least 3-4 years before the young players they’ll be drafting can form into a contender
oh to relive this tragic duo. They were just never on the same page and the team just never had the talent or effort on defense as a whole. at least it was always fun to predict which team would knock them out in the playoffs.
The lac of Rudy offense and Mitchell defense should’ve complemented each other. I honestly think they could’ve had more progress if Snyder stepped down sooner. If they had gotten a fresh voice sooner they could’ve tried a different look rather than running it bac year after year. Not only that but a fresh and powerful voice could’ve nipped the drama in the bud. He could’ve made it a win or leave situation a lot sooner and maybe that could’ve curbed the divaness in the loccer room. Another big problem is the fact they gave Mitch the keys too early, he didn’t and doesn’t deserve the keys. Gobert grinded from a bust to 3 time dpoy. Their entire defense was successful solely because of him, that perimeter has been getting torched for years. People are just catching on because of social media. Yea Mitch is a guaranteed buccet, but that’s it. You can build/ rebuild around Gobert. You can’t with Mitch. He needs the ball too much and doesn’t do anything else but score. It’s not like he’s a luka type where he’s a yea I need the ball, and yea I may score a lot, but best believe I’m setting my team up just as much and I’ll pass on my shot off a better one anytime. Mitch won’t do that, so now you HAVE to add another ball handler to run the offense, but he’ll never be able to run the offense if Mitch has the ball all the time. The only reason I can partially accept them getting rid of Gobert is the draft capital(which is a risk based off history) and his contract. But I honestly don’t gaf about his contract BECAUSE HE EARNED IT! He deserves every dollar regardless of his lac of offense. If you as a team focus on that with him he can make more apart of his game. He showed his potential when he avg 19 &12 🤷🏾♂️. But bac to the contracts, Rudy deserves his money and shouldn’t be penalized for it where as Mitch ain’t did a damn thing warrant such a huge contract. They gone have to get rid of him if they really want ti rebuild. The only way you rebuild with Mitch as your starter is you bring in a voice and brain like Lebron cp3 or rondo to run your 1 and force Mitch to play off ball at 2 like d book. If he swallowed his ego and did that he has the potential to be the next wade esc player on offense, if not better with his consistent 3. That’s why I’m curious to see how it’s gone work if he does go to the knics. Jb went there cuz he wanted to run his team, Mitch gone want the same thing. But if Mitch can accept the 2 and let jb cook at 1 they can be lethal. Like a younger cp and book no cap
Yal wont understand how special this team was and how special this part of donovans career was until like 10 years down the line. Going to miss don so much.. thanks for everything my boy.. honestly might be his best stretch of his career when all is said and done. Will always cheer him on when he comes home and hope we can get him back one day. Changed the culture. JAZZ FANS BETTER SHOW THEY FUCKING RESPECT. Hate other jazz fans sometimes
Outside of gobert there was no perimeter defense which led to his workload being heavy on the defensive end….but also outside of D Mitchell there was no offensive Creation….keep tht in mind
To sum it up I think the main problem is that gobert and mitchell was never really meant to play with each other. Gobert is an elite interior defender but suck at perimeter D and offense, and mitchell is a prolific scorer but not a good defender. I mean the two of them is only great at one aspect of the game, then sucks at the other.
I feel bad for Gobert and AD this year. They had to carry their shitty defenses on the perimeter despite it not having to be their jobs in the first place. Hope Gobert gets a ring (he def not getting in Minnesota unless there's a bit overhaul)
AD is trash, hes not even a true center, hes just an oversized power forward. He better be blocking them perimeter shots. Gobert and AD aren't built the same. Gobert is more like a Marc Gasol type, no way they were suppose to block perimeter shots as a 7'0" bruiser, unlike those lanky 7'0" like Durant. True centers should never be expected to block perimeter shots, their job is to stop the other bruisers from dominating the paint (ex. Jokic, Embiid, Valunciunas).
Dang man as a jazz fan this was brutal to watch. But it did remind me of the great times I had in the 2018 thunder series. Went to 2 of those games, good times.
There is a difference between a star and a superstar. There is a difference between a winner and a lethal winner. Some guys are extremely talented but to win you a ring all by themselves,it won’t happen Example is KD Russ Harden and many more
Clickbait title ngl. The fault should be held in their FO, not the players. They had an excellent offensive rotation for years in Donovan, Conley, Ingles, and Bojan. All of their starters have no defensive prowess but Rudy Gobert is such an defensive monster at protecting the paint that he can bolster a top ten defense in the regular season. They get 'exposed' in the playoffs because elite offensive players can punish their drop coverage with three pointers. None of the Jazz perimeter players can chase around screens, have good off-ball awareness, or just good at defense in general. Rudy is the glue that keeps them together. Their FO has made zero moves to improve their obvious short comings. What they need is at least some permieter defenders that can play their drop coverage and still have ok offensive value. Donovan and Rudy did their jobs. It is unreasonable to expect them to become great at everything.
@@randomvandal5730 Its more nuanced then just saying "they failed" and blaming on the players. They were still a perrenial playoff team and even held the one seed in the west. All the blame is being put on the players but their FO didn't address any of there weaknesses
@@Recurses They are still a perennial all star team and even held the one seed in the west. There is alot of nuance you are leaving out just by saying "they failed". As a jazz fan this was painful to watch, glad danny ainge is finally cleaning house so we can finally have a direction instead of being in no man’s land. Great video loved the in depth dive into my favorite team
I dont see much of it as Gobert’s fault. He is the only good defender on the team and is forced to guard everyone. How does anyone expect this man to guard small guards who are so much more agile and quick.
I absolutely love your videos. I’m a magic fan and I can’t help but to think you could make a really great video about our franchise and how they had 2 failed attempts at a championship when we had 2 dynamic fun teams, their collapse, and hopefully their rise back to being relevant again with our #1 pick and bright young core.
5:22 I don't even know why Jazz fans were shocked that Gordon Hayward left in 2017. Do they not remember that the team didn't even offer the latter an extension in 2014? They matched the contract the Hornets were willing to pay him. Also, Rudy Gobert was wrong for criticizing Hayward for the way the latter handled the exit. Criticize how poorly the team handled Hayward's first extension.
Jazz made the playoffs twice in 7 years with one playoff victory before getting shit on by a real team in the Warriors during his tenure and the fans had the audacity to be mad he signed with a contender😭
you know shaq and dwayne in 06 they tried replicating that but failed because of defence (outside of rudy) and there offense kinda cuz until they got mike and bogdan dm had to carry the offence
no large center can ever defend the perimeter, it has never been done, somehow Gobert is the exception. Their job has always been anchoring the paint. Marc Gasol couldn't defend the perimeter even if he tried but he anchored the paint and that alone was paramount to the Raptors winning a chip in 2019. Gobert is the best at that role today, he was just not used effectively and strategically by the team. A heavy 7'0" center should never be asked to close out and block a perimeter shot. Utah just had no chemistry.
It's all about Mitchell's fault. He is just à little Diva, thinking that he is the best player in the world and that the whole organisation is ruling around him. I hate this guy !
Snyder deserves alot of this blame - I don’t care who you are, ANYONE can be taught to give effort and hustle on defense. That’s the coach’s fault for not demanding more.
Rudy is a legendary inside defender. His offence is easily the biggest reason why he's viewed relatively poorly by the majority of fans. If he was 1/4th the offence of Shaq or 1/5th as good offensive, as he is defensive, then he would be treated much better.
Mitchell's decision to play in spite of Rudy and not use him feels a lot like how it went with DeAngelo Russel last year. These talented guards learn how to mesh with a big in certain schemes and Rudy doesn't play that way. It's pretty wild that NBA caliber players will just throw their hands up and refuse to change their game to suit him. Rudy as an offensive weapon is awkward and not worth scheming around all the time but to keep him relevant and feed him 14-20 easy points a game is so worth it for his Defense. You're seeing it right now with the timberwolves, as players learn how to get him 8-10 good looks a game they turn into high-percentage plays, and having him on the floor with competent perimiter defense makes it miserable to play against.
Donovan Mitchell just ain’t that good to be a number 1 option on offence and Utah relies too much on gobert for defence that gets exposed come play off time
It's really reaching to say they failed the team when you look at who they had to face the last years...every team they lost to in the playoffs was really suppose to win...Utah the underdogs in every series really 🤷

EXACTLY
@@Chocolouf I very much doubt that Brook Lopez statement. Before you get the chance to shoot them in game, you have to show you can make them in training. If you claim Gobert has only attempted 11 threes in his career (and missed all) because they won''t let him, I'd answer it's because he can't make threes.
You out here acting like he could shoot 30% if only given the chance. If he could he'd have it. Clearly he can''t.
I think Mitchell actually regressed a ton defensively after carrying more offensive load
@@_Feanor_. I never wrote that, and you completely misread my statement.
Honestly think u do the best deep dives on UA-cam everything is set up so nice and the attention to detail is great keep it up
I always say the ironic part is a versatile wing who can score, play make, & play defense like Hayward (who was an all star) was the only piece this Jazz team needed.
Its been years dude. Where they were drafted is Irrelevant at this point
Klay Thompson was a number 11 pick and draymond was a 2nd round pick. Hell, the current back to back mvp was a 2nd round pick. You don’t need lottery picks if you can develop talent
Dumb comment
what kind of logic is this? you know how many 1st overall picks have been complete busts?
@@Romanus- true but when’s the last time the jazz were in the lottery. It’s hard to build a championship team without a lottery pick.

Rudy Gobert gets too much hate. He's much better than people give him credit for.
He's soft in the playoffs
Rudy Gobert can’t dribble more than once or twice. For being one of the highest paid Centers in the league he is the least skilled on the offensive end.
He ultimately should be blamed for most of the Jazz’s struggles.
the media brain wash bro 😂😂😂it’s crazy donovan n rudy took y’all on those playoff runs while under 25 smh this hate is ridiculous
I would consider that squandering. The turnover was definitely squandering and the missed 3 was just a cherry on top
The Jazz also got lucky the refs didn't call Rudy out of bounds on that sequence.
I’ve been waiting for another upload! Glad to see it!
Donovan Mitchell is my favorite player. Such a shame to see him struggle in Utah
With how much media shits on Rudy I’m glad to see so many people use common sense when it came to just how bad the entire teams defense was. I’m glad he’s gone from the team that hated him so much
Gobert deserves a lot of the blame because he’s so one dimensional
This channel absolutely needs more attention
Regarding his offensive skillset, Snyder and the other players, except for Ingles, never passed him the ball.
editing is so good, love this channel
That clipper series really tore them apart. Terance Mann sent them to a lottery team, my goodness.
your channel is pure gold great work as always
mitchell really just got traded to the cavs
Keep It up with the Documentaries! I love watching them
Let me just say though, despite the fact that the Mitchell-Gobert era didn't pan out the way they wanted, you have to give it up to the entire Jazz who tried their best to capitalize on this but just fell short:
- The front office were able to trade for Mitchell who wasn't really seen as a franchise changing player. Lucky them since Hayward would leave in the following free agency that came after. They then tried surrounding Mitchell and Gobert with more offensive players which sacrificed their defense but immensely improved their offense
- Coach Quin Snyder then made adjustments to his offense with the more offensive minded roster he was given with and it showed with a historic offense. Was it too simplified? Yes, but it worked wonders for them for the most part
Wherever the Jazz go from here on out, hope they can build to be true contenders once again
As a jazz fan this will hurt
Like a younger cp and book no cap
pov: you need a certain amount of words in ur essay
can't fail an organization that's so good at failing, and coming up short.
I mean the two of them is only great at one aspect of the game, then sucks at the other.
and now they lost mitchell

I remember saying the jazz vs sixers was going to be the finals match up in 2021....
That wasn't farfetched since both teams were #1 seeds that year.
LET'S GO! NEW DYLANDOESBASKETBALL VIDEO!
I feel bad for Gobert and AD this year. They had to carry their shitty defenses on the perimeter despite it not having to be their jobs in the first place. Hope Gobert gets a ring (he def not getting in Minnesota unless there's a bit overhaul)
AD? AD barely played this year bruh.
Lakers was shitty on defense for sure but Ad barely played
Bae wake up Dylan uploaded
Sad to see those duo break. Man if only they could hit the shots that is needed.
There is a difference between a star and a superstar. There is a difference between a winner and a lethal winner. Some guys are extremely talented but to win you a ring all by themselves,it won’t happen
Example is KD Russ Harden and many more
Sounds like all 3
Keep up the great content!
It is unreasonable to expect them to become great at everything.
they still failed because of their terrible flaws...
But they failed tf
@@randomvandal5730 Its more nuanced then just saying "they failed" and blaming on the players.
They were still a perrenial playoff team and even held the one seed in the west.
All the blame is being put on the players but their FO didn't address any of there weaknesses
@@Recurses They are still a perennial all star team and even held the one seed in the west.
There is alot of nuance you are leaving out just by saying "they failed". Sure you can blame player weaknesses but theres only so much a player can do. The F0 addressed none of their weaknesses by getting guys that are good at permieter defense.
@@coledorillo6685 wdym so much when Donovan Mitchell doesn't even try on defense and Rudy doesn't even work on he's offense

I dont see much of it as Gobert’s fault. He is the only good defender on the team and is forced to guard everyone. How does anyone expect this man to guard small guards who are so much more agile and quick.
So maybe he isn’t as good of a defender as you think he is??

The last part where Rudy said it was either me or Donavon sounded like Kobe and Shaq just minus the winning
My day gets instantly better when dylan drops.
Can’t believe I’m just now seeing this but great video man. As a Jazz fan, this was hard to watch and relive.
you know shaq and dwayne in 06 they tried replicating that but failed because of defence (outside of rudy) and there offense kinda cuz until they got mike and bogdan dm had to carry the offence
As a Jazz fan, I always knew this video would come out eventually.... hurts man. Really hurts.
no large center can ever defend the perimeter, it has never been done, somehow Gobert is the exception.

Nah, some players are hard headed and if you push them too hard they can and will get you fired
This a dope video keep it up
Watched the Jazz play against my Mavs in the playoffs and can honestly say they were the better team. Donovan Mitchell didn’t even try that series.
I’m not the biggest NBA fan. But these videos make the NBA seem way cooler than it is
Rudy is a legendary inside defender. His offence is easily the biggest reason why he's viewed relatively poorly by the majority of fans. If he was 1/4th the offence of Shaq or 1/5th as good offensive, as he is defensive, then he would be treated much better.
@jpssteveshanahan Well, yeah. But that's also why they have the DPOY award.
Donovan Mitchell just ain’t that good to be a number 1 option on offence and Utah relies too much on gobert for defence that gets exposed come play off time
idk man. with the exception of 2022, He's been prolific in the playoffs scoring wise.
@@nonhan1801 Scoring isn't everything if you can't make your teammates better as the main ball handler, and add defense too.

It's really reaching to say they failed the team when you look at who they had to face the last years...every team they lost to in the playoffs was really suppose to win...Utah the underdogs in every series really 🤷
