The Truth About Red Dead Redemption 2's Open World

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in an open world that is more detailed and complex than anything we've seen before, but has Rockstar gone too far? I've decided to compare Red Dead 2 with other open world games to see if Rockstar's approach to world building is good or bad.

I finished the game recently, I was desperately in need of a world to fully engross myself in, I took my time, I was slow and methodical with the way I played, sometimes even stopping myself from playing too much so it would last longer. I've missed being in love with a world like this. This game brought back the magic in gaming that I hadn't found in years, simply because it managed to hide its inner works from me, once you know how game development works and all that, it's easy to look at games with the mindset of "its just a game". But this world felt so alive and so real that I managed to put away all my knowledge of systems and patterns away and truly enjoy it. What a journey, Rockstar have outdone themselves.

I'm an older guy, 57 and had been away from gaming for close to 10 year's all except for a very small time spent playing phone game's. I got bored being retired and stuck in the house for a long time in the winter so I got an x box and this game. First of all it blew me away as far as the looks of the game are, I've never seen a game look this good. I like that it has a story that you can engross in, but for an older guy who isn't used to devoting this much time to a game and having to remember so many thing's to be able to get the most out of the game, it's sad to say, above my level of desire in gaming . I do wish that I could just get on a horse an ride around looking and interacting with the world without being too restricted in what I do. I have not made it to a place where the game will allow this yet and it's frustrating . I know that I should have been ready for this level of complication that only used to reside in flight sim's. back when I was still playing video games a lot. I still love it and I'll continue on with it bit by bit but I have to say to other older guy's like me, THIS is one game that you must play for a long time that some of us might not have. This is a young man's game for the most part. IMO

Thank you for saying it!! I've been completely disappointed by the sameness of so many of these open-but-not-really-open world games (you forgot the Morder series with it's flame-topped towers). I stopped HZD after 10 hours and sold it. I sprinted through the main story of Spiderman in two weeks, so I could get full price for it. I haven't touched an Ass Creed game since Black Flag. Even the first RDR, while I recognized it's quality, didn't grab my attention. To my mind, the real open world games are those in the vein of Baldur's Gate, Fallout: New Vegas, or more recently The Witcher 3. I hadn't planned on picking up RDR2, but perhaps I will...when I have time ;) Great stuff!!

For me the biggest difference between RDR2 and other open worlds is that it's NOT a sandbox, i.e. it's doesn't let you play around and create your own fun. The open world is really a container for the vast amount of high quality scripted content (even minor robberies and legendary animal hunts are scripted) and anything you try to create yourself is either impossible, unrewarding, or shallow and tedious (e.g. shooting wagon drivers right outside Emerald Ranch to fence their wagons). Compare that to rampaging and screwing around with cars in GTA3, traversing the world in Spiderman/Assassin's Creed/Prototype and doing literally anything in Just Cause or Saints Row.
And I'm torn on this. On the one hand, it's amazing while the content lasts. But on the other, it feels like the incredible world goes to waste a bit. All the missions that felt like tutorials for open world activities (train robberies, bank robberies, home robberies, stealing horses, rustling livestock, etc.) are the only times you'll experience those things. It's not like stepping into a world; it's like getting on a ride and the illusion shatters the moment it's over.

I hear what you are saying and I agree for the most part. However, I don't believe a game has to be slow and feel real to be a "true" open world game.
To me it is about how the story, mechanics and gameplay represent the game. To me HZD (the only one I have played out of your choices) isn't a open world game. Yes the world is big and you can pretty much go wherever you want from the start. However, the main story is linear. You have to go from a to b. This might seem silly but because of that, I am pretty sure some areas in the game aren't accessible from the very beginning (I don't know this, it is only a guess). Because of this it isn't a open world but a very large linear world.
To me a true open world is a world like BotW where everything is accessible from the start. There is truly no place in the game you cannot go from the start of the game.
To put it in other words, a true open world game is a game which doesn't limit the play with a story or leveling system. Sure it is find to have areas which can only be accessible through having the trust of a city or a person (like the Guredo village in BotW). As long it doesn't require you have completed something the creators want you to complete (like a story or level requirement. Please note, by story I mean a main story you had from the start which tells you where to go. A story which focus around the city you want to enter is fine. the key is, it is the player who chose to start the story so he/she can enter the city and not because the game told so).

Seriously, RDR2 is the best open world game. The world is so realistic and the random stranger encounters and mysteries riddled throughout the map waiting to be discovered with no indication on the map that’s its even there to find raises the bar to exploration to the highest degree. Furthermore, all of the things that are in the world are completely optional and do not lock the player out from progressing the main story if they so choose to. The world of RDR2 is so alive and sometimes I like to pop the game in just to run around on horseback and explore stuff.

Yes it is Openworld, but it's not Sandbox Openworld, it is game with corridor structured missions design, straight from 1980's, try to pick different route, mission failed, try to spend more time on dead body looting, mission failed, try to even use different route in so called "stealth mission", yes you right, mission failed! They even sometimes resting all of your guns to default one in begging of the mission, in sandbox design RDR2 is way, way back than any Ubisoft games, brekpoint, farcry or odyssey, where you able to choose how to approach missions, use brute force, and missile them from helicopter or using stealth, night and silence. You have nothing to do after you complete game, New Austin is empty as shit, you can not even use unlocked "Legend of East Outfit" in your new game, in opposite take for example Far Cry 5, you always will not have any trouble to find activities and where to shoot, and how to shoot, you have your toys and tools and weapons on your disposal all across your playthroughs, once you unlocked them, but yes ubi games lacks in many different areas, but not in sandbox and game mechanics design.

Bro..do you know what an immersive sim is? An immersive sim gives you 10000 ways to approach your objective. Dishonored is an immersive sim. You can play it stealthy. You can play it without powers. You can kill enemies. You can knock enemies out. You can find secret pathways to completely skip enemies. Deus Ex mankind divided is an immerive sim. Prey is an immersive sim. RDR 2 has "on-the-rails" gameplay. RDR 2 has some of the worst gameplay design I have ever seen in my entire life. It is not a video game. It is a movie. RDR 2 has a great story but the gameplay sucks some major ass. You obviously dont care about gameplay in video games

    • @NgaMarsters
      @NgaMarsters 2 роки тому

@@brucew565 No, I do care about gameplay lol dunno how you got the impression that I didn't.
I’m just mature enough to know that there are different types of gameplay for different people
And I play all of them. (Dishonered/Prey) are a few of my Favourite games and they both have banging soundtracks)
A game doesn't have to give you 10000 ways to approach a situation to be called an immersive sim. I advise you don’t hyperbolize when you critique something because you come off as pretentious.
I just think the gameplay in RDR2 is a really good and immersive sim that differs from others.
I have the choice to choose what I want to eat
I have the choice to choose what animals I wish to go Hunt and how to hunt them.
I have lassoed entire enemy groups and knocked them out without killing one.
I got pickpocketed in Saint Denise and chose to let him go.
I have the choice to choose who I spare in certain missions
I have the choice to choose if I rob a house with Hosea at Night Or Day
If I choose night I can wake the father and silently interrogate him about the location of valuables.
      You get what I'm saying.
The sound design from the weapons is top-notch.
The Ragdoll engine was inspired by GTA 4 rather than 5.
Rdr2 has inspired me to write as well.
It's clear by the number of comments you've left one this one video that you don’t care for this 'game' notice how I use quotation marks? because those who call it a 'movie' as if that's a bad thing clearly haven't played it and fully appreciate its fictional yet real world.

@@NgaMarsters This game is has frustatingly linear level design in main missions. I mean I dont expect video games in general to have the best side missions but atleast main missions should be interesting. There are so many main missions where if you try to get a little bit creative or go 1 inch in the opposite direction of the main objective, the game will show a mission failed screen. In a mission where you have to rescue Rainfalls' chief's son, the game literally tells you who to take out. It is a frustatingly linear stealth mission. Had it been any other game, the game would have asked you to rescue rainfalls' son according to your creativity and intelligence. Rdr 2 is not the epic experience most reviewers make it out to be - but doesn't really come close in terms of execution. Gameplay is outdated and user-unfriendly - it lacks both polish and innovation - balance is a bit off here and there and the game fails miserably all across the line in terms of player interaction. The story and the missions are pretty much set in stone - and it refuses you to equip the chisel.
Most of the time you're not really playing a game - merely watching events unfold the way the developers intended them to - practically sidelined and incapable of influencing anything at all.
It's really not that much fun to play, sadly. Considering I paid a fair sum for it, and am a big RDR, and was waiting ages in anticipation of this game's release, then I ask myself why my PS4 is switched off and I'd rather surf the net instead? I should be glued to the game during any free hours that are available, chomping at the bit to get back from work to get back into the fray , but instead I'm kind of sighing like ok, I'll give it another shot, it's going to get better. The game feels like it's had a lot of love invested in it, but it's unbalanced love, focused too much on unnecessary details and a plethora of tedious tasks/chores and not enough on fun gameplay. You can still communicate an artistic and meticulously-crafted experience, but the game still has to be fun!
The graphics of close up faces aren't anything special for PS4. Detroit Become Human set the bar on graphics and RDR2 is nowhere even close.

*WHY ARE UBISOFT GAMES BETTER THAN ROCKSTAR GAMES*
Rockstar games do what they do well but those lush PS4 visuals aside - it is starting creak around the edges when it comes to introducing new gameplay. Some of the biggest moments in the game remain heavily scripted whereas Ubisoft have a stronger focus on letting their player tell their own stories within the game world. The first Heist in GTA V was cool on a superficial level but was scripted so that all players arrive at the same place. Ubisoft would have instead made this more like a Base and given the player the freedom to try and approach, rob and escape using stealth tactics. If you’re played through all of the Criminal Convoys in Watch Dogs then I’m sure that like me, you’ve been thinking of how much better GTA will be if the AI was stronger and each Mission allowed players total freedom in how they approached it.

Gameplay suffers profoundly in this game. The controls are clumsy and bad - needlessly hard to navigate, often unresponsive - and both movement as well as combat are clunky to say the least and altso unimaginative. Something youd expect from a game made ten years ago - not a more recent AAA-Production.
It lacks anything even resembling flow and also falls short in terms of user friendliness. Gunplay is pretty much autoaim and instant headshot - melee is simply mashing two buttons in accordance to animation and the mechanics for fishing actually made my hands go numb.
And even though the story is good enough (though not as brilliant as many would argue) - the missions are unrewarding tours. In fact - the way they're played out - you hardly get to influence them at all as the game itself pushes you down certain paths and makes most decisions for you.
They're so overly-scripted your actions and options constantly gets limited to a point where you might as well put the controller on the table and simply watch a movie. Most of the time you just follow character X through points A-Z then either click the objects he tells you to click or kill whomever he needs you to kill before being rewarded with a cutscene. It feels more like a tutorial that never ends than an actual game - and often it even dictates where you're allowed to move and at which pace or whether or not you're allowed to have your guns ready.
Even your weapon setup is affected. Went through a lot of trouble choosing and prepping the desired weapons pre-mission? Tough luck as this game will revert your choices to what it wants you to use during the first cutscene (even though the weapons it forces upon you are of the same type as the ones you'd prefer).
This to me was maybe my biggest nuisance - as I felt this game was treating me like an idiot. Some unwanted parasite in need of restraints. "Shut up and let me get on with my awesome story won't you? No ofc I won't let you influence it - I tell it best as it is - I am in charge this experience not you!!"

These are the exact things GTA 5 was praised for... and also what's wrong with a linear story? I am saying this as a guy that has played a shit ton of RPGs and games that take your choices really seriously, but I feel like you expect too much from a game even of this caliber. You have a huge world and a really well detailed one, good side missions and a lot of stuff to do outside of just playing the main story and on top of that you want a branching story? lmao

It is a great thing you have played a shit ton of RPGs. I am not even a huge fan of the genre. I dont know why you think I was saying that RDR 2 should have given a branching a storyline or should have been an RPG. I dont think you understood my criticism of Red Dead Redemption 2 because every single thing you think I criticised Red Dead Redemption 2 for, I havent even said it. Firstly, I dont understand what is the relevance of pointing out "these are the exact things GTA 5 was praised for" when I never said or implied, in any way whatsoever, that GTA 5 is a good game. I HATE GTA 5 equally for the same reasons I hate RDR 2.
Secondly, I never said I have a problem with linear storytelling. 90 percent of my favourite video games have linear stories. I couldnt care less about a linear story or a branching story. When did I imply that RDR 2 should have had a branching story? I think you read the word "linear" and automatically assumed that I have a problem with RDR 2's linear story. Atleast read the comment properly. *I DONT LIKE GTA 5 AND I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH RDR 2'S LINEAR STORYTELLING. I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ON-THE-RAILS MISSION STRUCTURE OF RDR 2. I THINK THE GAMEPLAY IN MAIN MISSIONS IS SEVERLY RESTRICTIVE. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RPGs*
      1. In short, your comment about GTA 5 is irrelevant since I am not a big fan of GTA 5 either because of the same reasons I dont like RDR 2. The reason I dont like both GTA and RDR 2 is because of poor gameplay design. Both the games are on the rails.
      2. You incorrectly assumed that I have a problem with RDR 2's linear storytelling. I dont. I have a problem with RDR 2's frustatingly linear level design.

It may be incrediblely beautiful and detailed and have fancy hunting but it will always be a boring real life simulator to me. They put way to much effort into making the world feel real and not in fun in interacting with the games mechanics. Horizon zero dawn will always be a better game for me. It is still incredibly beautiful and the world does feel very, very real but it still has very interesting to mechanics and it's fun to explore the world. Red deads world isn't fun to explore, there is nothing to find besides beautiful vistas and animals. It's fun to be in. And it won't be anything more than that which is unfortunate because it's crazy how much cool detail they packed in. I'm not bashing the story at all, that's great, my favorite part even. But did it really have to be open world go accomplish that story? The world was nothing more than the spiderman game. A playground. Eh just my two cents. Don't really give a fuck if you loved it. Don't let Red Dead Redemption 2 fool you, you're on training wheels through out the game thanks to their linear Mission structure. That old ass Pass Fail structure sucks. The game play sucks as well, it's boring and there's not much to do in the open world. The reason why other games avoid this type of stale game play is because it's not fun. There's a reason why Red Dead Redemption 2 is dead already. No one is playing no more, no one cares. The game is nice to look at but that's about it. This isn't a game you ever go back to cause it's not fun to go back and play. Games aren't real, they are fantasy wish fulfillment. There is nothing waiting for you on the other side of he mountain either. The first Red Dead was fun, this isn't even close to that. It took a while for people to figure out the Emperor had no clothes with this game, but they figured it out and opinion has changed. This is why the game didn't win game of the year. A beautiful open world can not replace actual game play, fun and true freedom.

If there's one thing I'll give them props for it's the realism. Congrats rockstar you made a irl simulator complete with every mundane and boring task imaginable, are you happy now? If you breathe in this game no matter where you are you get mowed down by cops. If you're a good guy it does nothing but progress a linear story. Hunting means nothing, fishing means nothing, robbing stores/people is boring. There's so much to do but it's all pointless just like GTA v. This is not what the first rdr was about and that's why so many people were upset with this game. If anything the game is virtual tourism, I have more fun watching it like a movie than I do playing it. I definitely don't hate the game but I don't play games to do the same stuff I can do in real life so it's unfortunately not for me.
