I bought this CD without ever hearing one note. Musician magazine had Sinéad on its cover, a strikingly beautiful woman with eyes as old as time itself. Read her article in the store, bought it, bought the CD, popped it in my player before leaving the parking lot. When 'Jackie' began I knew this record would have an impact on my life. To this day it remains one of the ten CD's I keep in reach beside my system. Changed my life. I'll always adore Sinéad O'Connor for that.
Thank you, that's lovely. I remember the first moment I heard her voice. A friend popped a CD (lion and cobra) into his car stereo and said " i think you'll like this" and left to run an errand, so when her voice broke out, it was her and I alone. Unforgettable.
@@evelaing3483 Music that does that to people can only be created by someone of truth. Sinéad was most assuredly capable of doing that. Couldn't tell you how many times I've played THE LION AND THE COBRA alone in my dim lit bedroom, volume as loud as possible and allowing every emotion I'm capable of just drain my body. I'm really going to miss her. Thank you for the comment, sorry if I rambled on... Peace ~
I saw Sinead in 1987 at The Stone, a San Francisco club that is no longer there. That show was better than any other show I've seen. Incredible, passionate performer with a voice that made my hair stand on end -- and a kick ass woman who never wanted to be "famous." Just be able to create her music.
I love how one moment her voice is so soft and gentle then suddenly its so strong and powerful, then before you can process the power of what just happened her voice is soft again. It takes true talent, heart and soul to be able to do that and have such a dramatic effect on the listeners! I am enchanted.
WOW! WHAT-A-SONG! A highly emotional dark story that is so all too common for the loved one's left behind in fishing villages. Sad but true, this is the reason all those beautiful knitted Irish sweater patterns were created, If and when the body washed up on shore, they were, most of the time, non-reconizable, but because each fisherman had his own unique sweater pattern he could be identifyed and the love ones could have closure. Great video creation.....thanks for posting
That’s not actually true about those sweaters, they did intricately cabled sweaters because it made a much thicker fabric which made them more warm. The pattern was probably used to identify some bodies at some point but that was not the main motivation.
@@Chamomile369 good point, but no cigar. Thickness of a knit has to do with the ply of the yarn. The stitch pattern can be made tighter or looser by the creative knitter. Also, the ancient customs of the individual towns is a well documented fact. You're just throwing facts out to sound self important and not holding any strength of conversation when it comes to factual truth. Look up the history from several sources, not just one, and you will find the truth of what I've previously stated. It's quite commonly known along the truly costal fishing towns, so I don't know what planet your talking about...but it's definitely not the same.
This is *So refreshing to hear!! I often think that younger generations are missing out on so much good music, *Unless they have someone to expose them to it. Case in point!
Stunning. Spectacular. Haunting. Gorgeous song. It might be my favorite of hers and I love every song she recorded & performed live, but this one is special. ❤
Una cantante come Sinead ce la sogneremo per sempre 🤍 la passione, la grinta di una combattente, l' animo puro di un cerbiatto, le sembianze di un Angelo.....
Bought this album in 1987 - I was 16 and saved up my pocket money because I was totally blown away by this strong woman. Subsequently became an Irish citizen - since my grandparents had been forced to leave Ireland - and I was born in Manchester. May she remain strong.
when I first listened to Sinead O'Connor, it was her album, and this was the first song on it....i was just listening to her and then she got to the "YOU'RE ALL WRONG!" part and it blew me away. I'd never heard a tone so icy and piercing and metallic....i have no real way of describing it. I've tried simulating it but I can't. I think the irish are just blessed with killer voices.
EPIC...I bought 'The Lion and the Cobra' in 1987-88, and Sinéad immediately captured me as a fan; forever. 1st track: 'Jackie', with those powerful vocals and alternating falsettos, is amazing. ❤
Wish I could see this, so strong so powerful yet so beautiful and peaceful, I'm just scared that in my life we won't have a vocalist so talented and honest
The instruments are simple but they convey a sense of ominous anticipation. When I first heard it I expected the guitar to pick up but it's her voice that brings on the MOSH PART. Her vocals are delivered with epic precision and intensity. The entire narrative of the song is foreboding and well written. She really packed a lot into 2:13.
Este era uno de mis himnos, en los momentos más solitarios y tristes ahí la encontraba con su maravillosa voz y su música. Me parte el alma. Hasta el infinito Sinead ❤🩹
Jackie Lyrics [Verse 1] Jackie left on a cold, dark night Telling me he'd be home Sailed the seas for a hundred years Leaving me all alone And I've been dead for twenty years I've been washing the sand With my ghostly tears Searching the shores for my Jackie-oh [Verse 2] I remember the day the young man came He said, "Your Jackie's gone He got lost in the rain" And I ran to the beach And laid me down "You're all wrong," I said And they stared at the sand "That man knows that sea Like the back of his hand He'll be back some time Laughing at you" [Verse 3] And I've been waiting all this time For my man to come Take his hand in mine And lead me away To unseen shores I've been washing the sand With my salty tears Searching the shore All these long years And I'll walk the seas forever more 'Til I find my Jackie-oh 'Til I find my Jackie-oh 'Til I find my Jackie-oh Jackie-oh Jackie-oh
The best singer with all her songs , she go very high then very low in less a Second, people who know music they all know she is un replaceable in her music .🙏👏👏🌹🌹👍
Yes, and it is a good thing she is like that. I am the same in many ways yet I lack the strenght to push it out like she did, and that is why I like her so much. In my opinion she was unmatched when The Lion and the Cobra came out. The whole record feels like rebellion and yet honesty as well.. I love it.
I admire her so very much and would do anything to see her live in concert and I stand by her for when she tore up that painting of the poster of the priest who by the way should burn in hell for what he did to all those little boys!
"You're all wrong I said ..." - I still get chills at the way she sings that, even after 35 yrs (when I first saw this on TV).
Nothing else like it!!
I literally got the chills just before reading this, at that exact point.

I had the same experience the first time I heard the Lion and the Cobra. One of my very favorites to this day!
@evelaing3483 beautifully put
One of the most truly life changing albums ever for me, been playing it for 30 years now ❤
I love Jackie! , " I remember the day when the young man came.,.."
I've just recently heard 4th and vine and I like hearing her sing happy too!🥰

I wish it went on another 20 minutes
One reviewer called her voice almost supernatural. he was right
I have been crying to this song for evermore
I sometimes play it on my phone because this song is so Bangerz, I can't stop listening to it, it's beautiful.
RIP Sinead. First song I went to when I heard the sad news. Amazing song by an incomparable, unwavering artist.
I only learned the news because I came looking for this haunting song. Terribly sad.
30 years I've listened to this, I'm still here. Wish Sinead was.

The best opening track on any album ever.
I totally agree 👍
Here I thought it was just me…That verse. Melting!
Totally agree, it’s like Irish people can just use their voice so much better than most, or it just naturally is better!
Amazing voice
Best song ever

1st CD that I ever brought.
Rest now troubled soul.

💔 This song always made me sad, as does today's news. Rest in Power.
She's a real Vocal Witch from Past Celts.....
so lucky to have grown up listening to this
Wish I could see this, so strong so powerful yet so beautiful and peaceful, I'm just scared that in my life we won't have a vocalist so talented and honest
she s still around; stronger than ever!
I love this song!
Sinead it is eternal!
Rest in Power, you beautiful human!!
I listen to this song too much. I love the lyrics and Sinead's voice, it's brilliant music.
Nothing compares 2 Sinéad.
This song is amazing.
Das Album kam, glaube ich, 1987 raus. Da war ich 13 und sofort in sie und ihrer Musik verliebt. Bis heute. Eine der besten Sängerin aller Zeiten!!!
I love to belt this song out!!!❤

Jackie Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Jackie left on a cold, dark night
Telling me he'd be home
Sailed the seas for a hundred years
Leaving me all alone
And I've been dead for twenty years
I've been washing the sand
With my ghostly tears
Searching the shores for my Jackie-oh
[Verse 2]
I remember the day the young man came
He said, "Your Jackie's gone
He got lost in the rain"
And I ran to the beach
And laid me down
"You're all wrong," I said
And they stared at the sand
"That man knows that sea
Like the back of his hand
He'll be back some time
Laughing at you"
[Verse 3]
And I've been waiting all this time
For my man to come
Take his hand in mine
And lead me away
To unseen shores
I've been washing the sand
With my salty tears
Searching the shore
All these long years
And I'll walk the seas forever more
'Til I find my Jackie-oh
'Til I find my Jackie-oh
'Til I find my Jackie-oh
Jackie-oh
Jackie-oh
One word: epic!!!
She looks like Natalie Portman here, would make a great Sinead movie!
Very good :-) I'm one of those people who previously only ever heard her singing that other song.
RIP. I am so sad
greatest voice ever
Wow what an incredible voice

So used to the opening chords of Mandinka starting up straight after Jackie dies away.
For Real...I must've played that cassette tape 500 times and my brain automatically hears those opening guitar chords of Mandinka!
@@redrocks1983 One of the best albums ever recorded by any artist. And she was so young when she wrote those songs. Amazing talent.
Absolutely Outstanding Performance So Glad To Have The Opportunity To Watch Again Thank You For Sharing ❤🎼🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
