Totally love this, i agree 100%… also most people don’t know, and this is according to John Danaher so not my words lol… but in practice Garry literally puts himself in the worst imaginable situations possible, just to get out and practice escapes… so obviously when you are doing that on purpose over and over that’s going to happen. BUT that’s where this comes in to play, having no ego 🤣
Defense issues arise when there is less (GI,) Jiujitsu. When a person does "no gi," Jiujitsu all the time they develop higher reactions but less technical defense. As a advanced practitioner that is growing older GI Jiujitsu is a life time activity, many people say things outside the matt and the "field." As far as Ego, I have a Ego but how do you deal with not being able to warm up properly training frequencys in "gi," Jiujitsu. For example lower belts that have parts of techniques or strategies but do not know about proper "drilling," tendency's also the importance positional dominance. Also shrimping as warming up or solo drills as warming up as opposed to just going straight into the technique......? I just feel my general flow lung rhythm, and central nervous system is not firing the same getting ready for the stress of Newaza and Randori of live Jiujitsu.
Great video! I don’t understand though how this would apply to being a white belt (where I am). I rarely train with other white belts because of scheduling and only train with coloured belts. Of course, I get destroyed a LOT. How can I interpret that as anything other than “I totally suck at this”?
This was EXACTLY my first 6 months of training. I was a fresh white belt training with blue purple and brown. I got destroyed every day for a long time. For me, it was awesome because I knew early on why…they had more mat time, and that made me eager to get more time as well. Fast forward 4 months or so and I was rolling with my first white belt. I remember getting to a dominant spot and thinking, “Well, I haven’t been here before!” 😂 I would just encourage you to remember it’s a process, and a long one. In some ways those early white belt days are still some of my absolute favorite. Enjoy the art of it and don’t worry about how “good” you are. Take joy in that you are learning an awesome skill that is benefiting you in major ways. Hope some of this helps! Thanks for the feedback

Appreciate this. And thanks for giving context to his statement!
