    Hey man just found the channel. I just started Jiu Jitsu a month and a bit ago. I only went to a few classes and I definitely see myself doing most of these things haha (not the tapping, I can do it and know when to, not looking to get injured). I am curious what you think is the best way to progress. Is it learning a bunch of small techniques and trying to get better and them, or is it better for focus on one or two things at a time and focus on perfecting them. I feel like I cant progress as the class teaches so much and then when i go to roll I cant defend/put up a fight

    • @djmyrick
      @djmyrick 9 днів тому

      Glad you found the channel! Good question. Everyone learns a little differently so I think the answer can vary from person to person. I remember when I was where you are now, and everything was so overwhelming. It did help me to focus on establishing a small framework (knowing all basic positions), and then working hard to know one sweep from those, one submission, and one escape. I tried to not get information overload and just tried to piece new details into what I already knew, as opposed to getting frustrated by all I did not know. This is a good conversation, and I think it helped me figure out what my next video needs to be: 5 keys to help you learn Jiu Jitsu early on! At the end of the day just keep going to class. I know that sounds so simple but it really is the most practical step. Because over time you will piece things together and make progress. I hope some of this is helpful!

    #1 Self defense - that's what got me in the door. #2 Fitness - I have always tried to stay in shape, but being part of a BJJ organization has helped maintain fitness consistently where I might have had an occasional slump previously. #3. Camaraderie - I wasn't looking for this, but my gym is filled with talented, friendly people. It's almost like the old TV show "Cheers" where "everybody knows your name." #4 Learning - There's always something to learn, even if it's just one detail on a technique you are already comfortable with. #5 "Appropriate" challenge - It's not like you're signing up for SEAL training, but it isn't a piece of cake either. You have to put some effort in, but the rewards are well worth it. #6 Escape - While you are rolling you are 100% focused on the task at hand, and any life problems tend to melt away, if just for that period of time. It's almost like a mini vacation for the mind. That's all I can come up with for now.

    Ok , I'm turning 45 on 11/16 and considering going back to BJJ, I dropped out after a few classes because I'm scared to get hurt and be out of work for months???? What's your opinion on getting hurt and being out for awhile.... I live paycheck to paycheck....The gym were at does give us 50% off for my kids and me .Can I safely do BJJ and work 7 days a week without injuries

    • @djmyrick
      @djmyrick 2 місяці тому

      Yes. You can safely train but it does matter how you train. A few tips to consider: 1. Tap early and tap often. If you find yourself in a situation you don’t understand and sense danger: tap. Ask later about that position and gain understanding so you’ll know how to escape. 2. Feel to not roll with anyone you don’t trust. Trust is earned and if they haven’t earned it it’s ok to hold off on rolling with them. 3. Warm up before every class. 4. Find some exercises to keep you healthy. Doesn’t have to be a lot. A little bit, with consistency, goes a long way. Hope this helps. Injuries can happen, but these are some things that have helped me keep training through my 40’s. And Happy birthday!

    Defense issues arise when there is less (GI,) Jiujitsu. When a person does "no gi," Jiujitsu all the time they develop higher reactions but less technical defense. As a advanced practitioner that is growing older GI Jiujitsu is a life time activity, many people say things outside the matt and the "field." As far as Ego, I have a Ego but how do you deal with not being able to warm up properly training frequencys in "gi," Jiujitsu. For example lower belts that have parts of techniques or strategies but do not know about proper "drilling," tendency's also the importance positional dominance. Also shrimping as warming up or solo drills as warming up as opposed to just going straight into the technique......? I just feel my general flow lung rhythm, and central nervous system is not firing the same getting ready for the stress of Newaza and Randori of live Jiujitsu.

      I always plan to show up early, giving myself adequate time to warm up on my own. We are all different so you know your body best. I never rely on class for warm up. Anything we do at the start of class is just bonus for me!

    Great video! I don’t understand though how this would apply to being a white belt (where I am). I rarely train with other white belts because of scheduling and only train with coloured belts. Of course, I get destroyed a LOT. How can I interpret that as anything other than “I totally suck at this”?

      This was EXACTLY my first 6 months of training. I was a fresh white belt training with blue purple and brown. I got destroyed every day for a long time. For me, it was awesome because I knew early on why…they had more mat time, and that made me eager to get more time as well. Fast forward 4 months or so and I was rolling with my first white belt. I remember getting to a dominant spot and thinking, “Well, I haven’t been here before!” 😂 I would just encourage you to remember it’s a process, and a long one. In some ways those early white belt days are still some of my absolute favorite. Enjoy the art of it and don’t worry about how “good” you are. Take joy in that you are learning an awesome skill that is benefiting you in major ways. Hope some of this helps! Thanks for the feedback

    So cool to be able to take a seminar with Roger Gracie! My daughter and I met him outside T-mobile arena after Day 1 of ADCC. 😊

    It’s really fun when the dudes you showed the ropes, regularly submit, disappear show up and start passing your guard and subbing you. Humbling. Just proves the power of Jiu Jitsu. Great video.

    Totally love this, i agree 100%… also most people don’t know, and this is according to John Danaher so not my words lol… but in practice Garry literally puts himself in the worst imaginable situations possible, just to get out and practice escapes… so obviously when you are doing that on purpose over and over that’s going to happen. BUT that’s where this comes in to play, having no ego 🤣
