If you're using a lot of water in the acrylic paint for the initial background, are you not in risk of reducing the bindability of the paint and risk a future flaking off of the paint because it's been diluted too much.
Paint doesn't spread well if there's not a good gesso base. Using a purchased, ready gessoed canvas will not provide a good base. One or two coats of gesso are necessary
Gesso is like paint so if u r putting a lot paint layers which most abtract artists do then there is no need to re apply gesso to ready made canvases, it's an over kill
I do agree with this. I think some artists resolve their paintings in just a few layers, and this might be where it makes sense to add some layers of gesso.

Thank you SO MUCH for talking about this! When I was in college back in the late 70s, my teachers told us to NEVER eat, drink, or smoke while painting and always wear gloves! Acrylic paints are made with chemicals that can penetrate your skin and lead to kidney and liver damage. There are popular painters who used to do performance painting who are now no longer with us from liver failure. But now that young people are learning through UA-cam and not formal education, there’s no one telling them about the dangers.
And thank YOU for chiming in! It's so important to take care of ourselves as artists because we are often exposed to a whole lot. I am very used to wearing the gloves, so much that it feels weird when I don't wear them:)

Hi I came across your video searching abstract art how to create compisition in your painting, some thing I am struggling with really bad right now. I would have loved to have watched you pulled this painting together to completion. I think that would have greatly helped me. I did learn so much from watching you paint and I need to order a color wheel and some brushes and tools that will allow me to create loose and abstract shapes. I have learned I hate using stencils and that my style is less a bunch of marks and geomatrics patterns and more beautiful colors and compisition in quite and muted tones with interesting shapes. What I loved was learing about the 3 part break up of your canvas however I still am so confused about how to create a great compisition. When you were painting before placing the darker green your painting looked very much like a dreamy forest with low over hanging swamp like branches and moss and with a lake in the far background. (Your first application of tourqiouse) Also at 1:05:04 I kind of freaked out when several eyes emerged from your painting. One set at the top left of your painting just under your turqiouse color and another set in your bold red violet flower shape. Can you do a video or short showing your finished painting. Thank You

I just found your videos, spent an hour watching this one……loved it. Your studio tips are really good. I’ll be getting some glass cut and bigger water bins - I see Home Depot in my near future. Been painting since 2007. I work very differently but have felt so stuck, so THANK YOU! Time to experiment with new techniques. I paint “ideas”. I’m working on painting a song right now. I use text and some collage elements often. But I want to broaden my palette, and use gloves.
This was really great! In fact those words do not really convey its value, your presentation, and the amount I learnt in terms of a common sense approach to painting. How awful that u received inappropriate comments while doing it live! There are some very weird and damaged people around. Thanks so much for this. Best R
Dick Blick or Amazon. It's a Chungking Escoda Natural Bristle Round Brush. They are the BEST. They are expensive, but if you take care of them, they will lost a very long time. amzn.to/3ylmSo2
I don't because they are pre-gessoed and I usually have so many layers on my paintings that it's not necessary. But many people put at least 2 more layers of gesso on top of the factory gesso. Up to you.

I do not, but some people will add many layers of gesso to a pre-gessoed canvas. I have so many layers and textures in my paintings that I don't feel the need to gesso again. Helen Frankenthaler, a famous abstract artist, painted on un-gessoed canvas. It's personal preference!
Hi 🙂 Your class was interesting and your piece turned out GORGEOUS!!! You definitely stopped at the right time. How you got there, even though I watched it, I still have no idea! I'm going to say intuition. May I offer you a suggestion? Quinacrodone is pronounced "qwin•a•crow•doan"....we shorten it by saying quin red-violet or quin gold or quin burnt orange, etc. When one is explaining things using quin instead of quinacrodone helps the tongue from twisting....at least for me it does, lol!
So glad you enjoyed the class! Abstraction is one of those mysterious things, but I try to make it easier. Thanks for the suggestions re: quin red-violet. I say the whole word because if someone were to want to buy it, they won't find quin red-violet! Thanks for the tip:)
I generally add my darkest colours in the first or second layer! That way they pop through the painting in various spots of my choosing without looking like they’re floating on top , which I don’t like.

This the most REALLY uncompromising instructive painting tutorial I've come acrooss so far. You explain 3very step comprehe sively. I follow some othe good tutorials, but somehow there is alway a step that happens that you don't see, which often seems to be a very important one. I sometimes wonder if they don't REALLYwant us to learn, and it's just a demonstration of their superiority as an artist and they don't want ??? us to learn these vital steps??
@andreacermanskipainting Ioften get asked how I do things, and to be truthfull, I don't really know. If I take a brush into my hand and once I have chosen my colors, the brush just does it's own thing. I do a lot of thin layers. But still need al lot of basic instruction, being an unschooled artist. Your instructions are what the Germans call : the effect AHA!!!
Non-representational abstract with rule of thirds composition type and a triadic-ish color scheme. But I won't hold onto it too tightly if it feels like it needs to change.
Oh my goodness I love this style but you freaked me out and lost me when you covered up so much of those other variants of the pinks and yellows and brought in all that turquoise..... Still very beautiful but I loved all the different variants with that pink popping through pink and green compliment each other so much in my eyes..... But great tips for painting thank you so much for sharing❤
You're very brave. That last part really was a little scary. The "black" addition was a risk when the painting was developing so nicely. I'm not sure I could bring myself to try it. I hope I'm able to take some greater risks than I do right now, so this video is really just what I needed.
It's hard for me to take risks too. Sometimes they work, sometimes, they flop. However, I feel like you can see when I played it too safely, so I almost have to take the risk. Glad this helped!
@@andreacermanskipainting Well, you're braver than I am. I'm basically a landscape painter, but I've recently become greatly intrigued by abstract works that I've seen. I don't think I really appreciated the beauty of the form until I'd been doing landscapes for so long and laboring over so much detail that I'm a little worn out now. Your videos are helping me get over my nervousness about trying this "genre." The little I have done is actually a lot more fun, even while I find it more difficult. It definitely comes from a different place, as well, which I find I can find hard to do. Thanks again. I'll be watching more of your vids.
Wonderful! I think it's good to have something else to try when you're feeling stuck. Sometimes I want to paint realistic landscapes just to change it up!
Interesting! I have it on my easel and I want to keep working on it this week. The forest might go away because it needs more layers there, but we will see:)
I painted an abstract while watching, though not live. I'm self-taught but learned late in life that too much water can weaken the molecular makeup of the paint/pigment. I use Floetrol instead of water.
I hear you! I like Goldens wetting agent better because it lasts forever and it's archival! But it's more watery than Floetrol. Also just so you know Floetrol is not archival if that matters you ;)

Your focal point to me looks like someone sitting in a boat… I was hoping you would put some more turquoise just around the boat and it would appear as of around a body of water! And you did! sort of like an abstract cypress swamp
Thanks, this one is STILL in progress...it's in the studio with a few others in progress. I might change it completely because I have a black frame already on hand for it....thanks for the comment!
Not that I’d know what to do, but I feel like the last paint you applied around the focal point flower, took away from your original look. Loved everything prior to that.
there is no need for cardboard under your pallet - I just paint the other side of the glass titanium white acrylic paint and then use the unpainted side up - works perfectly.
That's true, no need. I have one that only has paper. However, I worry that if I bang that one against the wall I could break a corner of it. Therefore, I prefer the cardboard, but that's a personal choice for safety:)
I think it looked real good before you added the extra green. I think you’re like me. You tend to go a little you overwork I’m a little bit. That’s what I do. Another thing you can do if you’re working on wood, you can use a scraper sometime to scrape some of it off you know a lot of your theories, though I learned some from you

I wish you would not perpetuate that myth. Oil paint doesn’t have fumes unless it’s a dirt cheap white. It’s the same pigments as acrylics (dirt) mixed with flax (linseed) oil. It’s the turps that have fumes and you don’t need them. Use walnut or artist’s safflower oil as your medium. Even the alkyd version does not have fumes and is not toxic. Store your, and clean your, brushes in grocery store safflower oil.
yes, that's an issue for many. You might try this tutorial--I think it makes it easier to start an abstract. ua-cam.com/video/ge07K0oj6YM/v-deo.html&lc=UgyL1HuNpiXtAt57VYN4AaABAg

Wonderful! I am so glad to hear that!
This was really great! In fact those words do not really convey its value, your presentation, and the amount I learnt in terms of a common sense approach to painting. How awful that u received inappropriate comments while doing it live! There are some very weird and damaged people around. Thanks so much for this. Best R
Aww, thanks so much! There are some weirdos out there!
Hi I back I love your teaching I’m so glad I found you thank you 😊❤
You are so welcome!
You’re an excellent teacher. Reminds me of my college painting professor.
Thanks so much!
I’m going to start painting today like you did I’m looking forward to it I was having a hard time getting started not know 😂❤❤❤
Starting is often the hardest part. Let yourself play with paint and marks and see what emerges!
😂Thanking you very much. I cant say I like the painting that much but the process was interesting.
Every painting goes through its ugly stage! I can't say I don't agree with you. lol
I’m like your way of teaching. Peggy Manfredi. In Montana
😊
Thank you Peggy!
I now live in SantaFe. Want to learn to try your style of painting
Awesome! Come take a class! santafepaintingworkshops.com
If it’s oil paints, you would mix with linseed oil instead of water…? Amazing teacher by the way. ❤
To make a glaze with oil linseed oil or liquid would work, thanks'
Where can I find that big round brush that you use? I have never seen one like that before.
Dick Blick or Amazon. It's a Chungking Escoda Natural Bristle Round Brush. They are the BEST. They are expensive, but if you take care of them, they will lost a very long time. amzn.to/3ylmSo2
Fabulous. Thanks so much 😊
You are so welcome!
Excellent instruction!!!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi. Do you gesso your canvas first?
I don't because they are pre-gessoed and I usually have so many layers on my paintings that it's not necessary. But many people put at least 2 more layers of gesso on top of the factory gesso. Up to you.
IAM sure you guided me to new ideas Will make me a better painter Thz
I am so glad to hear that!

Recently bought some Golden acrylic. Been painting for 10 years and always wanted to try them , there quiet expensive so had to save to buy them. Just waiting for the right scene to get going.
That makes sense. You could also start your painting with the less expensive paint, and then do your final layers with Golden:)
I so enjoyed watching this , i struggle to do abstract but you gave so much teaching here , maybe i will again abstract. Thank you so much :))
Adele
You are so welcome!
How do I find you again? I am new
You can subscribe to my channel. You can also get on my email list . If you look in the description box below you will see links to get freebies and you'll be added to my list.
Did you gesso the canvass first?
I do not, but some people will add many layers of gesso to a pre-gessoed canvas. I have so many layers and textures in my paintings that I don't feel the need to gesso again. Helen Frankenthaler, a famous abstract artist, painted on un-gessoed canvas. It's personal preference!
Sound good also
I want to get on your mailing list for your classes.
You got on, right?
Thank you this was informative
So glad! Welcome to my channel!
I'm going to keep working on this tomorrow at 10:30am MST! ua-cam.com/users/livevmONTa2rooI?feature=share
Where do you sell your work?
Online and at my home studio/gallery space.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hope I get to meet you sometime
Really interesting thanks ❤
You're welcome 😊
Hi 🙂
Your class was interesting and your piece turned out GORGEOUS!!!
Yes, me too. For many years I would always start with indigo blue. I like to work dark to light, but sometimes I change it up for fun:)
An artist from New Mexico! Yea! Im also .❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
Really?! Where are you?
@@andreacermanskipainting Yeah I am in Albuquerque. My dad has a graphic design and advertising degree. But I am self taught and still learning but I still consider myself an artist and I wish I would have gone to school for some kind of art degree. Because I have always loved to draw and paint and still do. But thank you for replying. I am learning from your channel also, I am glad I found it 😁😁
@@krystal2202 Awesome! Just an hour down the road:). You know, you don't have to have that fancy BFA to be a great artist. Don't let that myth fool you. Sounds like you have art in your blood--just keep learning and forget the degrees. They don't even teach abstract painting in many programs anyway!
Hey Krystal, I wanted to invite you to my FREE online abstract 4-day painting challenge from September 3-6, 2024. Here's the link if you want to join:) santafepaintingworkshops.com/abstract-floral-challenge-yt
I couldn’t figure out how to send a picture of it to you, but it’s so it looks like he just did it one time. Looks like a starfish looks kind like a kid did it but it is pretty interesting.
Very cool!
I agree Liked the painting better at various stages
That happens to me many times during a painting session. It's just part of the abstract painting process.
Im learning alot from you, but in the middle of epoxy
Ah, epoxy resin?
This the most REALLY uncompromising instructive painting tutorial I've come acrooss so far. You explain 3very step comprehe sively. I follow some othe good tutorials, but somehow there is alway a step that happens that you don't see, which often seems to be a very important one. I sometimes wonder if they don't REALLYwant us to learn, and it's just a demonstration of their superiority as an artist and they don't want ??? us to learn these vital steps??
Wow, thank you! I think part of it is that it's hard to teach while you paint. And not every artist is a teacher. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Your instructions are what the Germans call : the effect AHA!!!
what's the concept?
Non-representational abstract with rule of thirds composition type and a triadic-ish color scheme. But I won't hold onto it too tightly if it feels like it needs to change.
Here’s a painting that was painted back in the 60s. It was the first abstract that I ever saw. I didn’t paint it. Dr. Merritt painted it.
I do t see it but thanks for the thought!
You are welcome. I am sure this painting will continue to transform as I work on it. Hoping to get back to it in the next week or two.
Layer 2 and it looks like an ethereal forest!
Also just so you know Floetrol is not archival if that matters you ;)
I'm going to keep working on this tomorrow at 10:30am MST! ua-cam.com/users/livevmONTa2rooI?feature=share

I´m looking and learn from Jelgava a town in Latvia Europe
Wonderful! Welcome to the channel. Glad to have you!
I like the blue
Thanks ;)
Right now, that turquoise makes me see a window of light.
Yes I can see that!
Thank you 🧡
You’re welcome 😊
I like that
Thanks!
Why so many drops ?
Drips?
Because I like them.
Lovely❤
Thank you!
Thank you
You are welcome!
Not that I’d know what to do, but I feel like the last paint you applied around the focal point flower, took away from your original look. Loved everything prior to that.
I hear you. The painting changes a lot through the process as I always do a lot of layers.
❤
there is no need for cardboard under your pallet - I just paint the other side of the glass titanium white acrylic paint and then use the unpainted side up - works perfectly.
That's true, no need. I have one that only has paper. However, I worry that if I bang that one against the wall I could break a corner of it. Therefore, I prefer the cardboard, but that's a personal choice for safety:)
❤❤❤
Thanks for the love!
@@andreacermanskipainting thank you for the wonderful demo . Wish we lived in St Fe would love to join one of your classes !
@@tess1193 Aww, it's a great place to visit if you ever come here! If not, I do have an online abstract painting course...
I think it looked real good before you added the extra green. I think you’re like me. You tend to go a little you overwork I’m a little bit. That’s what I do. Another thing you can do if you’re working on wood, you can use a scraper sometime to scrape some of it off you know a lot of your theories, though I learned some from you
I do overwork sometimes! It's one of my challenges, and what I try to do now is stop when I think I'm 80% done. You might be interested in the abstract painting challenge I am running next week. I painted
Great! How did your painting come out?
I wish you would not perpetuate that myth. Oil paint doesn’t have fumes unless it’s a dirt cheap white. It’s the same pigments as acrylics (dirt) mixed with flax (linseed) oil. It’s the turps that have fumes and you don’t need them. Use walnut or artist’s safflower oil as your medium. Even the alkyd version does not have fumes and is not toxic. Store your, and clean your, brushes in grocery store safflower oil.
Thanks for the tips!
I paint in watercolor, fairly loosely….i cannot like abstract, wish I could….
yes, that's an issue for many. You might try this tutorial--I think it makes it easier to start an abstract. ua-cam.com/video/ge07K0oj6YM/v-deo.html&lc=UgyL1HuNpiXtAt57VYN4AaABAg
