Here's a little tutorial on how to create an approximation of that famous Tom Sawyer sweep sound. According to sources in the internet, Rush were using an Oberheim OB-X Synthesizer for this sound, not the OB-Xa. Let's find out how close we can get with the UB-Xa.
Thank you Tom! Fantastic vid! Thank you for the work involved! Truly appreciated! I've been questioning if I should pull the trigger and purchase the UB-XA or wait for the UB-X. I've wanted the OB-X for many more years and hearing how close the Behringer version is supposed to be, I think it's going to be worth the wait.
Tried it and got the same result, Excellent. Thank you. However, I use OSC1 triangle waveform to beef up the bass a little. Also, by modifying the UB-Xa atrophy preset settings, some patches might not sound the same after that since it's a global setting.
The fact that the 2-pole CEM3320 filters can do this is pretty significant since it was SEM filters in the original OB-X. All it takes is some thought and the proper application of parameter controls as you have demonstrated. It should even be easier in the UBX as it will have the SEM filters among other tools.
The screen’s fine: I don’t see others’ issue. The benders can be inverted to make them behave ‘normally’, and the mod bender can be sent to one destination when bent down and a different one for up.
Thanks! This seems a pretty close approximation :) It'll be the closest I'll ever get to a real Oberheim, once it finally arrives :) You aren't selling yours by any chance are you? ;)
Your patch is tremendous! Can I ask you something? Since I've watched a different video today by someone apparently pushing the LFO Rate to the max I got a little irrtated that it was not audio rate, I mean the 50 Hz I'm used to from the OB8s I had. Were it possible if you you please do me a favour and try if maximum LFO Rate is further increased as a target in the mod matrix, perhaps with multiple entries? My result of "investigation" was namely that, according to the manual, OBXa's LFO only goes from 1 to 20 Hz. If that's true I'm a little disappointed because back then I did everything I could that UB-Xa get's OB8's page 2, what luckily succeeded. The lack of SWM I could get over since one can mimic it with hardsync & poly unison but slow LFOs unfortunately are a different thing...
Awesome kit despite what the ignorant synth snobs say. Sixteen voices, poly aftertouch, great sounds. Maybe Behringer should produce a face plate that is black with Deepmind 16 on it to appease some touchy types. Great tutorial, keep em coming :)
The only people who are ignorant are the ones who listen to this and think it sounds like the real thing…and they would be much better off getting a soft synth.
@@vaportrails7943 I Actually prefer the additional feature of the Behringer tbh. The sound is amazing, and it holds it's own against more expensive synths with less features. Each to their own.
That crappy B company is eating the overbloted, overpriced, A company's lunch. A company could make the price more competitive, but Tom can't understand, lower price = sell more product. Sell more product = more money. So I don't feel bad. But I get it. You are using sarcasm! I love sarcasm! No I don't!
Warum machen deutschsprachige UB-XA keine deutschsprachigen Videos? Man hört sofort, ob es ein Engländer oder Amerikaner ist. Deutsche sprechen englisch immer so komisch. Bitte in Deutsch.

Extremely helpful tip with the spiral source. Thanks
You're welcome, thanks for your feedback.

Thank you for sharing what Spiral does. I'm gonna dive into mine and try that sound as well. 😎
Finally a FUN UB-Xa video!!
Awesome job!
I'll be trying that tonight, maybe throw a little stereo delay on.
I just relieved my UB-Xa and the Rush patch was a super let-down!

@@OldCrowCS80 in that case I’ll probably get the UB-X instead of the UB-Xa.
The OB-X was also what was used in Subdivisions.
...thanks for watching? Thanks for showing!!! Listening those rezz was like balm the the ears.
Nailed it! Great job.
Love this tutorial! One of my all time favorite synth sounds! Well done! Can you get any FM'ish type sounds like bell type sounds?
@@UniQueWerkx No, not really.
Great programming, sounds super close
Thank you! Good tutorial 👍 So far I did not play with the Matrix. Thanks to this video I will!
Aww Tom, you made your lovely MS-5 video "PRIVATE". Was linking a buddy to that - so good. The "Sample and Hold bass"
sorry for that. Turns out that a befriended artist liked those so much, now he asked me to help with his album and use the sequences.
@@tomnoise23 Tell him to write his own music :)
@@Station2Station-du2gh Writing together is so much more fun ✌️😁
oh can you do the second sound of Tom sayer for a split?
That air organ?! Woo ill sub for that
thanks for sharing will try
Have you tried this with the 2.0 update? It should get much closer to the original with the resonance sounding better on 2.0.
@@UniQueWerkx no I didn‘t . The concept is similar though.
This thing sounds pretty great but I'm a little worried that the display screen will bother me and the pitch/mod bender things as well.
Nothing‘s perfect. 🤷♂️
@@tomnoise23 Just ordered a landscape fm Noon instead. I clearly have my musical priorities straight.
@@Bata9999 Awesome stuff! Although a little bit unrelated while not comparable at all 😉

I don’t have a real Oberheim, so I can’t sell it 🙂

Hi, if the LFO rate is fully up, you can't make it faster using the mod matrix. Just double checked.
@@tomnoise23 Thanks a lot!!!
Super!
WTF, so good vid dude
That is the very best reso sweep in history. There is No other synth that can do it.

I've got my "Oberheim" sticker ready for this..

by 'real thing' do you mean the synth from the early 1980s that is nearly unobtainium?
