  • In this lecture video, we will explore the scattering process which demonstrated the existence of the atomic nucleus. This is an important pre-requisite before discussing the radiation interaction with matter. We will discuss how to calculate and measure a cross-section for the Rutherford experiment. The goal is to have a semiclassical description of the concept of the cross-section. Ever since Rutherford performed his scattering experiments on alpha particles from a radioactive nucleus, scattering has become a tool for investigating the forces between elementary particles. At the end of the lecture, a brief general description of Rutherford's differential scattering cross-section will be discussed.

Could you explain me a bit more about the normalized to rutherford cross sections that we use to study nuclear scattering?
