Loot greed has been the downfall of many a Dayz hopeful. You think 'Did I miss something good' and you keep going back...
Be happy with the kill, grab what you can when you can if you can...
But ultimately don't be afraid to leave the area with nothing more than the satisfaction that you sent somebody back to the coast - sometimes that's as good as it gets.
when i played, i was a huge basebuilder and hoarder. and although it was so thrilling to have all of that, the worst feeling was waking up to all of it being gone. its very hard to be like "well, its just a game" when you literally lost a thousand hours of work.
then i played for a couple months as a stasher. WOOWWWW that dayz life is WAY easier and VERY satisfying!

I love base building.
Initially, to play Dayz you just log in and run around the coast lamenting how difficult the game is and then you die of thirst.
But after awhile, you need to give yourself a purpose, you must assign your own game objective and this is what makes Dayz so wonderful.
You design your own game - so my objective and focus is base building, for some it is PvP, for others it is PvE or killing their first bear or completing some in game task, that the Exosuit in Anastara or the Deadfall maze.
But in Dayz, the end of level boss, is your own motivation, the levelling up process is your own motivation and other players can be both allies nor enemies, it is mostly situational.
Military base = probably not a friend.
The Well in Vyshnoye = probably a friend.
But I do enjoy the grind of building a base, finding the tools (nails, you either find none in six hours of game play or nine boxes in one town) the entire process is worthwhile for me - but yes, being raided is grim.
