I saw this video as an ad, and I only clicked on it because I work at a car wash exactly like the one described in this video. I can tell you first hand that all the advice you gave in this video is definitely accurate and useful. When we load Teslas onto the track we give them extra time to get into neutral because not everyone knows how to do it. Only difference is that I think your car wash is ripping you off. Our monthly pass is $29.95 per month, or you can get the premium version for $34.95. So I believe your being ridiculously overcharged. I don’t know if you have any other car washes in your area but that is definitely a steep price to pay

Thank you for adding this as well! I appreciate your co-signing on this advice and thank you for the note about the monthly subscription! It's definitely a new car wash and a very nice facility but you may be right about the rate being high.

Contemplating paying, but haven't, but here in Honolulu, Hawaii, its $79/month for unlimited car washes throughout the month. Crazy. So I stick to safe hand washing with proper materials for washing and drying. Saw this video because I was thinking of paying that as I was the car weekly due to rain.

Here are some tips that most people don’t know about when you go to a drive thru car wash
    1) you can ask for any loose parts on the car to be taped down
    2) if your afraid of your wheels getting scratched, you can ask for a tire shine retract or a tire brush retract, or both.
    3) it’s not always necessary to fold in your mirrors but I would say that it is safer. At my car wash we require cars with trailers mirrors to fold them in. So it’s just an extra precaution you can take.
    4) I’m not sure if this is the same at your car wash, but if your not satisfied with your wash you can come back around and get a rewash, typically for free.
    5) if your car has a lot of dirt on it, at most car washes you can ask for what’s called a wet down. This basically tells the machine to put extra soap and water onto your car.

I now have gotten a full paint correction, a complete clear paint protection film and a full ceramic coating. It is incredible how amazing my red paint looks. I never have to look at swirl marks again and it should look great for at least ten years. The car is so easy to dry, I can't believe it!

I had a wrap and a ceramic coating put on and once a year it is fine tuned. I had to promise never to take it to any kind of car wash using brushes.

I work at carwash and everyone gets out the car and we vacuum the car and then send it through the carwash by itself, except Tesla’s are complicated and someone has to sit in it , then on the other side a worker hops in and sprays all the windows, and then they pull it out of the carwash and we then clean inside of the windows, dry the car, wipe all the door jambs, and empty ashtrays .

Most conveyor style car washes prohibit you from pressing the brake, which you need to do at low speeds in a Tesla. There’s a better way. Practice this before you go! Put the car’s stopping mode into “roll” mode. Then you’ll find that if you press the brake just hard enough, you’ll trigger brake hold. Press again to release (speedometer says 0.) If you press gently, you can still stop the car but you won’t trigger hold mode. You want your speedometer to say 0 when you’re stopped. Then you can just glide through the car wash in drive, and squeeze the accelerator at the end to pull out. It’s WAY safer and feels more natural. 👍

Man I don’t know if I’d want to put my car through a “brushed” car wash. Those things can do a number on your paint finish (circular “etching”, etc). Also risky with your rims as you mentioned in the video. Not sure how washing it on your own is worse than going to a car wash facility.

Agreed. I was extremely hesitant to say the least. I think you are right. I got a bit lucky in that the car wash that I go to is a new facility with top of the line equipment. FYI, Neutral mode will automatically switch to park if 1. the drivers door is open AND 2. You lift your butt off the seat.
So for car washes where they tell you to get out of the vehicle you must put the car in "Tow Mode" which is basically neutral for 20 minutes without anyone in the car.
Options > Service > Towing. Tap it so it turns blue. Get out of the car, and they have 20 minutes to move the car around without anyone in the car. After 20 minutes it will go into park (or stepping on the brake will put it in park.)

I don’t really intend to take mine to a car wash but good to know. We don’t have many car washes where you can stay in the car around here. I guess that this means that they’d have to know or be told to to use this option or push the car to the track. I’d mostly be concerned about rim damage but I’d imagine that they’re used to making sure that the inside of the tire is on the rail.

Fantastic video, Greg! My only question is, where were you when I needed you? I had the same issues at the brand new car wash that has the latest technology. I could not find neutral, but I opened my window and the attendant did it for me. I had the alloy wheel protectors that stuck onto the rims and the guide track pulled the front left one right off. I had trouble getting the car back into drive because I was worried about putting my foot on the brake with the moving track beneath me.
The car came out really clean and there were no swirl marks on it. I used several microfiber towels to dry the car off and I am really happy with the way things turned out. It was a learning experience.

      @PedramGhahremanloo 4 роки тому +1

Very mixed reviews on that. I personally think they protect from Oxidation, Dust and Rain Acids but it will not protect against swirls and scratches. To avoid having swirls you need to know that even a simple microfiber wipe, or just touching the paint with hand can put swirl marks on your clear coat. Thats why roadster owners who show their cars, insist you not touching the cars. What you can do is: 1- Touch-less Car wash (Even a manual one works. This works for me in a public self service car wash: Spray Water, Soap, Liquid Wax, Water and DO not touch the car with any kind of brush) (If you have a garage, you can get a water jet spray and foam canon and do this as well) then Air dry by simply driving you car at 50-60 mph if possible (if not possible blow using a leaf blower) 2- Consistent Buff and Wax (How often you buff the car depends on a lot of things: How thick the clear coat is - Each Buff removes a layer so it is an intensive solution in price of shine and beauty. So you can not go unlimited. Also hardness of Clear coat is a factor to consider too) (people usually target on one buff a year to lesser amounts) - Wax is a really good solution to bring the Shine. It can hide the scratches to some extent by over-glowing the straight surfaces but it does not treat any scratches permenantly. Wax (and therefore, Ceramic Coating) add a layer on top of clear coat. They protect against Oxidation and Rain Acid damage. They make the water bubbles bead rather than stay on the surface and because they are making the surface more smooth, less dust is tending to stay on the surface. Hope all this gives you an idea. Automatic Car Wash brushes will definitely put swirls on your paint. How sensitive you are on that, depends on you. Some people prefer the consistent shine of wash, and applied wax and they are ok with Swirls but professional detailers, show car owners, will not agree with that approach. Last bit: The darker your paint color is, the more chance it shows scratches and swirls. Maybe if you have a Black Car, you review your decision about Automatic Car Wash (with the exception of contactless ones)

I know it seems excessive but it depends heavily on the climate you live in. I'm video recording and taking photos of my car frequently for videos and articles so I find my self cleaning it more often.

If that really happens at your car wash that’s the places fault. I work at a car wash and that never happens. I’ve never had anyone complain about paint scratches. There are certain instruments in the wash that aren’t well suited for some vehicles, and in that case you can ask for that specific instrument to be retracted in the wash. For instance, we have a lot of people requesting a tire shine retract because sometimes that instrument scratches specific types of wheels.

@@tameemiqbal5567 no, there are many articles stating that Teslas paint is soft - I personally have the multi-coat red not taking any chances with the quality of my paint, I fully intend on having it wrapped - do what you are comfortable with...

Whoa. $60 a month for a car wash pass? You wash your car every few days? Man. I have a 2007 Honda CRV. I've never washed it. I never understood why people waste the time and money on a car wash when you could just leave it out in the rain. Maybe you live in a desert state like Arizona, then I can see maybe the car would get excessively dirty, but other than that, I don't get it. I've rec'd the video, though, because I'm sure this is helpful to some.

Obviouly if you consider a car as just a means of transportation, carwashing in dumb.
I own a 2007 renault espace. A incredible quircky MPV which still today blows my mind on how much glass surface it has. All that room and family friendliness. Its a freaking moving picnic table and an extra room for our appartment. And it's in a gorgeous bordeaux color. Buts it's a grandma. Has dents and pokes. Even so, I wash it with care every month and keep the interior q-tip cleaned after every weekend.
Honestly, I wash my car because I'm a little narcissist and not afraid to admit it. I like to have it shiny clean when 1) I look at it 2) I "showcase" it wherever I go. In the back of my mind there's always a small voice telling me "looking good; and they will notice it". "they" usually my family in law so that they know their daughter made married the right guy. At least that's how it plays out in my fantasy mind. Hahah :). It's dumb and maybe I should spend more time learning a new language... but it's just who I am :).
Also, something I can't explain, the time I spend washing, taking care and detailing the car soothes my mind. I'm not the only one and came across lots of people (mostly men) saying the same thing. It's like a quiet time or a "yoga class". I've never had a yoga class, but I assume I burn just as little calories as any namaste session I've seen on Insta.
One more reason, every time I come back from the carwash, my wife - with a judging look in her eyes - tells me; "you have the habits of a serial killer hiding a car crime scene". which cracks me up every time. :)
I'm on this page because we are saying goddbye to the renault. The last maintenance quote just digged the tomb. Unfortunately, they just don't make these roomy MPVs any more because of all the increasing safety features and regulations (which is good). And because of other things (narcissism included) we're getting a model 3 Long range this week. So thanks for the tips !!!!!
