This technique is so helpful for someone who is mathematically and spatially challenged like me! 😊Thank you!
Thank you. Finished my first quilt top and needed to learn how to make my pieced quilt back. Scoured my book collection and online tutorials. Your instructions were the best I found? Very easy to see, follow and understand! Very informative, thank you so very much! Janet
Barb is outstanding quilt teacher. Thank you
I agree. Never include the selvedge in any sewing project. It is woven differently and it will shrink differently than the rest of the fabric when it is washed and dried.
Thanks for this info. I have 2 of my grandmother's quilt top that I want to finish with batting and backing, This gives me a point to start that process. Very helpful!
Timeless great information. Thank you!
Good video. Two hints: One, always cut off the selvage edge, because it's tough and doesn't shrink at the same rate as the rest of the fabric, so that after you wash and dry your quilt, you could get puckering. Two, if you iron the back seam over to one side, that seam will never split with use of the quilt. Seams that have been pressed open can split much more easily, and difficult to fix once it's in the quilt.
thanks
Would you cut the selvedge off after you piece the two together?
I questioned this, too. Thank you for clarifying that!
I love your calm style. Thank you !
That fabric is beautiful!
Question: Wouldn't it be more efficient to pin longways, either to the left or the right of where you plan to have your sew line? That would still secure the fabric (epecially if to the left of the foot) and you could carry on without stopping to pull out the pins till the end.
I wished for a beginner like me you would have told how much material you bought is that 2 pieces of the same amount and which pieces did you sew together?? Im confused again a beginner
wow.. very good instruction. Very helpful.
Thank you for sharing, this video really helped.
Thank you, this was very helpful.
Thank you for an awesome presentation for the backing. what is rule of thumb for backings, I have seen them done in thirds?
Love this idea - going to use it tonight to prepare my backing. Thanks!
I get a little confused at 1:29 in this video. Right before this point in the video, did you cut the backing fabric lengthwise before you take it to your table and pin it??
Thank you. :0)
This is a great method! Thanks for sharing. I've saved this video to my playlist of great tips. :)
I like these videos. I subscribed but I'm not sure if y'all are still current and making new videos.
Initially you had 4 layers of fabric on the table. It looks like you sewed the 2 middle layers together. What did you do with the other 2 pieces of fabric? I’m confused, beginner quilter.
very clear video! thank you!
oh and thanks for a very informative and well made video!
This is so helpful thank you
Thank you for the lesson
Wouldn't you trim off the selvages along either side of your middle seam? I would think that they would cause a problem when quilting as they are more closely woven...
elsiepooh1 In general I don't, but if the selvage is sewn so close that it is pulled or puckered, I do. Thank you for asking and making a good point!
Thank you!
so why do some of the others cut theirs???
I need to cut using 108" fabric. Is this the video I should follow?
+Nita Meola This quilt is 9' by 9' , so that's why I'm asking.
+Nita Meola This technique would be used for piecing two full WOF. For your king size quilt and the 108" fabric I think your best bet is just attaching a 10" to 12" strip to 2 adjacent sides. Best of luck.
It is a JUKI sewing machine, commercial straight stitch only.
I have that machine - love it!
Don't know what machine that is but it's really fast without one iota of vibration.
Quilting method for backing
It's a Juki. They're insane workhorses! I think it's a TL 2010Q. They're excellent straight-stitch machines.
Did you not cut the selvage edge off the fabric or did I miss that?
I did not cut off the selvage edge off the fabric, thus sewing 1" seam allowance. If there is noticeable bunching at the selvage, I would then cut it off.
Great visual, though, if you're taking your quilt to be quilted on a long arm machine, don't try to get away with "no measuring"!!
I am beginner and when i came to backing, my backing puckering.
And when i watch this video, i know how to solve it.
Thank ypu..
Thank
well it is nice to know that my Juki is not the only noisy SOB.
Tudah Rbah (thank you very much). Before I leave, let me tell you, the real Name of the Creator (that is, the ancient Hebrew Name), is Hayah asher Hayah, as when He told Mose that. (I call Him that Name or Hayah, plus sometimes I call Him Yah.) Also, we are to do the 7 appointed times, as in Leviticus 23, but no more animal sacrifices, following the sacrifice of the Messiah. HaLLUYaH means, the praise to Yah.
